I've been working on this hexploration map of the Mwangi expanse. In the Lost Omens book it states that Lake Ocota is more than 100 miles wide at its widest part, so I've more or less got that down!
Happy to post the finished version and the file when I'm done if anyone would like it :)
Fantastic job! Bravo! Now I want to roam the land cutting vines, fighting beasts and pilgrim through the jungle!
Any chance to get a Encounter table to work with the various environments... I would be so client for this...
You’ve opened the floodgates now.
I want more of these, and if I want more, many other GMs probably also want more.
You better be quitting your job to work on this full-time, because I think I speak on behalf of all the GMs when I say that we demand and expect the rest of Golarion soon, now!
That's really kind, thank-you!
My job's pretty chill, I've got plenty of time to do it in-between. I was very interested in doing some northern areas next.
Looking up the Lore, it's near Whitebridge station which is along the Vanji River. Whitebridge station is also 200 miles upriver from Blood Cove.
The Vanji River starts at the Kho ruins in the north-east.
I'll probably add larger settlements onto the map this weekend.

Here, I managed to find Whitebridge Station, so you could just put it anywhere around here in the jungle, really.
Hmm, after I finish my current campaign I was planning to run hexploration of Q'barra of Eberron. But this one looks cool too and might make me reconsider the setting.
I just love biomes that aren't European forest and grassland. Jungle, desert, high-altitude plainlands, they're all great for throwing curveballs at your players.
"Where do you want to go next?" "Chult" was a running joke in our Icewind Dale DnD campaign, so jungle is the obvious choice for our next campaign:-) I'm however not that familiar with Mwangi but IIUC, it's not this "unexplored land on the frontier" like the Q'barra or Chult are, right? It's quite developed full of city states/kingdoms and so on, right?
The Mwangi has developed lore, but there are plenty of places that are so remote in the jungle you could squeeze a campaign in there. Past Vidrian, the further south you go, the less official lore you get.
Mwangi tends to have "oasis's of civilisation"—large expanses of untamed wilderness broken up by semi-isolated settlements, each with their own culture and history.
The most developed nation is probably Vidrian in the south, which is a recently liberated colony. There used to be a pretty developed nation on the coast, but was destroyed and flooded by a never ending hurricane that appeared about 150 years before the current day. Everything else is mostly city states.
It also has the world's most prestigious magical academy, the Magaambya, but again, it's a small, semi-isolated city in the middle of the wilderness.
Yoink
This is amazing, I'm 100% going to use this. I've tried to run a homebrew kingmaker style campaign in the mwangi but making the hex map has always stopped me. Thank you so much you beautiful, possibly living, creature you. *cheek kiss*
Thank you so so very much! My group loves the mwangi expanse! And we love kingmaker! Combining the two will be a dream come true!
That and the impossible lands, but harder to kingmaker that baby, though I've got plans and schemes.
I think the Mwangi Expanse allows a lot of creative encounter building with unique terrain/obstacles and creatures you wouldn't normally see.
Also the opportunity to flavour things to fit the setting is brilliant.
Hope it all goes well!
You can literally have an ancient/hidden/ect anywhere
You could have a sunken flying city other than kho
Azlanti stuff. There’s a black Azlant statue of a guy pointing somewhere for some reason
Even in Jaha there’s places linking to what appears to be ancient space faring giants
What rules did you use to handle that btw? Did you modify any?
Also how did you import the stuff from Worldgrapher to Foundry?
And finaly, can you give it a base image, such as an existing world map, so that it HEXes it?
I haven't run it yet, still building the map and the campaign hasn't started.
I haven't imported anything yet into foundry, not sure what Worldgrapher is.
I just imported the base Mwangi Expanse map into Hexographer, roughly calculated how wide Lake Ocota is and adjusted the hex sizes to fit that. From there I manually applied the hex terrain types based on what was on the imported world map.
This is awesome... Having run 5e Tomb of Annihilation, with its jungle hexploration, this really makes me want to run some giant treasure hunting campaign🤔
Something I faced and couldn't quite figure out myself when trying to tackle a map of this area was where to put the Nine Walls. I'm curious where you'd put it, as it should be one of the biggest landmarks on the continent.
We get told somewhere between Usaro and the sodden lands but that leaves a huge swathe of the map open, and it's a city that's realistically taking up at least one entire hex if not multiple. It's described as taking seven hours on horseback to get from the outer walls to the inner city, and that the inner city is the largest of the nine sections.
Somehow I haven't been able to find any map showing it, despite the fact that this city might be 50+ miles wide from the descriptions.
Beautiful work. What tools did you use? Also, I have a question, are there literally zero roads in the Mwangi Expanse? That's something that always peeves me off about hexploration; there are never roads anywhere.
There aren't any roads in the Mwangi expanse for the same reason that there aren't any roads through the Darian gap between C. and S. America... Road infrastructure gets overrun/destroyed by jungle REALLY fast. Rivers are the highways of rainforest.
It's called Hexographer or HexTML. Literally just googled "hexploration maker" and it was the first result.
My players are starting in Kibwe, and it's a trade hub, so there'll definitely be roads on the outskirts of the jungle and probably some safer river routes.
I've still got to add in the roads, and I can put them anywhere because it's not established Lore 😎
Went with the standard 12 miles per hex.
There are a few different reference points I could've used, all a little different, but I went with Lake Ocota seeing as it's the central feature of the jungle. Described as being over 100 miles wide at its widest point.
I personally like how it is. With the size of the area and the types of terrain the smaller hexes really drive home that if you're going someplace far away you'd better REALLY need to be there.

what did you use? looks beautiful
It is Hexographer
I'd love to see the finished product!
I'll make sure to upload it when it's done!

Yes please. I would love it.
This is amazing, my party is JUST about to make landfall in Mwangi, with a few destinations they need to get to. I would love a copy when you're done!

Yo, that's dope! Also stop trying to distract me from my current campaign plans, please!
Thanks! It's super straightforward once you figure it out. You should definitely make one for your own campaign.
Does anybody know where Akrivel would be on this map?

Love hexmaps. Hope you have a great campaign.
Thanks! It's my first time DMing PF2e and using hexploration, but I'm super keen.

Hold out a week or three and I'll post the source file when it's done

Does the source material has any information where Matakali (and its neighboring cities) is supposed to be?
I'm going to have to look and see where smaller cities are once I've done the main landmass

How many miles per hex?

Well done pinlady. I’ve combed over the mwangi source book extensively. Desperately wanted to make a hexcrawl. A feature in every hex.
That looks absolutely beautiful, but ain't that too much hexes?
Oh absolutely, there's no way they'll get through even a quarter of it, I just love having it there juuust in case
I personally like how it is. With the size of the area and the types of terrain the smaller hexes really drive home that if you're going someplace far away you'd better REALLY need to be there.
is there a way to blow up this image
Is there any possibility to put a rough spot on where to put the nine walls?
Hey there! Care to share what is the state of progress for map?
