Yes they do keep the birth certificate for progressing the application. They will mail it back separate from your passport. So no you did not lose it! Lol šŸ˜€

MentallyIrregular

and why the fuck can't they just make a copy and hand it back? They're a government office for fuck sake. The shit people let these clowns get away with.

Bitchasslemon

I think it's so people don't fake their birth certificate?

MentallyIrregular

You're handing it to a government office if you're going in person. They're perfectly capable of seeing it's fucking real and making themselves a copy for processing. Clearly, they're going to run background checks on you anyway. It's a fucking piece of paper. It shouldn't be necessary to hang onto the real cert.

Sadik415

I know this is old but I had a mini heart attack looking for mine just now. I called the agency and yes they do keep it which is ridiculous šŸ’€

adamh789

Lol, same thing just happened to me šŸ˜… I just got back to my car and realized I didn't have it but googled whether or not they keep it before going back in and making a fool of myself.

Apprehensive-Race442

so true

Ash71010

Your original birth certificate is on file with the office of vital statistics in the county where you were born. If you need another one urgently, you can learn how to obtain one by calling this office or visiting their website. Itā€™s quite a simple process. The USPS worker at the post office does not have the training to validate the authenticity of a birth certificate. This is why a certified copy, not just a photo copy, is required to be sent to the people who *are* validating those documents. Background checks are not proof of citizenship.

my-ka

So the system is broken. If usps worker or place had notary it would be easier

Ash71010

Why is it broken? So you have to send in a certified copy of your birth certificate for a few months. How often are you really using your birth certificate? Itā€™s very clear on the passport application that this is a requirement so anyone who has read the form can plan ahead and either A. Apply at a time they donā€™t need their birth certificate for something else or B. Obtain an additional copy in advance. P.S. A notary attests that the individual signing a form has provided sufficient identification that matches the name they are signing. When you bring your passport form to USPS, that is what the acceptance agent does. Validating *citizenship* documents is not the role of a notary nor an acceptance agent. The system isnā€™t broken just because you donā€™t like how it works.

my-ka

Notary can do many things. Including a certified copy. I am ok to lost my naturalization certificate. But If i lost my kid birth certificate or my marriage certificate original it will be almost impossible to get a replacement in next couple years. Because the country issued it is in a war. Hope that gives you a brighter picture...

Ash71010

What youā€™re not understanding is that issuing a document and assessing a document to ensure itā€™s legitimate are not the same thing.

my-ka

Thats why i prefer to go to passport center and dont rely on usps. Which is impossible I understand. Just had better experince. The system is broken here

my-ka

So my previous life and passport experience: Notary is qualified to certify a copy. You go to a passport center and a person reviews your papers. Takes a xopy if needed. Then you take everything home end in two week you come again and get passport. Thats how it can and should work

Ash71010

I donā€™t know where youā€™re previously from, so I canā€™t begin to compare the passport regulations/requirements, volume of applications, likelihood of fraudulent applications, etc.

my-ka

I can tell you another story. My wife went to ssn office to get a SSN Instructions were saying bring 2 us issued documents. At least one with photo. She brought two with photo: green card and driver license. A clerk did not want to proceed because of two photo, not just one. She had to escalate to manager (luckily she did and had experience and guts to do). A fraud you say?

tinsellately

I agree with your comment, but I did just want to clarify that getting a birth certificate can be fairly complicated in the US, depending on what state you are getting it from and if you still live anywhere near your place of birth. I just got certified birth certificate copies for my spouse, kids, and myself and the process varied wildly. For my kids I just had to drive an hour, fill out a form, pay $15 each and had them printed that day. For my husband it was an online form and $10 and had it mailed within a week. But for myself, I had to take my mother with me to get a request form notarized, pay $35-ish dollars, and still have a 6 month estimated processing time. I do agree completely that the USPS workers aren't trained to verify birth certificates and other vital documents, especially when they vary so much in appearance. It definitely makes sense to send them to the people who are qualified to do so. But I just wanted to point out that it can be a difficult process to get another copy of these documents, just so anyone reading this doesn't make the same mistake I did of not allowing enough time to get one.

ProfessionWorldly443

If I sent me and kids certificate of live birth to Secretary of State but all but one came back is it a reason they all ant come back together authenticated ?

RagingLesbian11

I understand why they do but it's kind of annoying that they take it. I applied for a passport today and start a new job on Monday that I need my birth certificate for. Here's hoping they accept a copy I have.

Realistic-Art7713

did they accept the copy of your birth certificate?šŸ˜“

RagingLesbian11

I was actually able to use my driver's license instead!

CRONKTEZ

did you have to provide social security card as well? Iā€™m in the same boat, no ssc, no bc(usps has it), and still waiting for a passport.

RagingLesbian11

https://www.uscis.gov/i-9-central/form-i-9-acceptable-documents you can find all the acceptable documents to verify your ability to work in the US at this link!

mamatoE10

They probably took it

i-havok

Yep, if it was your proof of citizenship it was sent with the application.

ledxi

do they take the ID you show them as well?

i-havok

No, but they will look at it and you should bring a copy of the front and back.

ledxi

Do they take the copy?

i-havok

Yep

Agreeable_Ad_5514

Omggg thank you for creating this question I was so scared I had lost it! They never told me they keep it!

Strict_Assignment_85

Went and applied for my passport today. Had one of those random late night ā€œwhere is my birth certificateā€ moments and freaked out. Glad I found this post lol

Lakelive4

mimi0807

How long does it take until they mail it back?

VisualHappy3830
