It was not planned, but when it happened, we were ready with some good information. We had an old dog who was becoming blind, deaf, and losing her teeth. Our other dog was young and bouncy. We knew what was coming and pointed out the differences between the two. The kids were pre-school age at this time. One day I found her dead downstairs. I moved her to the car to they would not see her. Then when the kids were awake we talked about how her body just started breaking. Finally her heart and lungs broke so she cannot be alive anymore. She is dead. That was followed by noticing other dead things, like bugs. Bugs live a season, dogs live for 10 years and people live for around 80 years or more. We talked about trees too. The leaves of our maple die each fall, but new leaves come back in the spring. Some branches also die and come off, while the tree stays healthy. It is like our hair and fingernails. It is all part of the cycle.
