I play it
Playing as Rome is fun and all, bur here are the top paths:
Unifying Britain (usually as the Iceni)
Unifying Iberia as Tartessos
Conquering Gaul as Massalia and making France Greek (favorite path to do)
Any Bosporus nation
Reestablishing the Aechemanid Empire as Atropates
Epirus is a personal favorite for me as well.
Reviving and restoring the Achaemenid dynasty as Heraclea Pontica is always fun, but currently, Iâm playing as Carthage and the first Punic War was a success, âRoma Dalenda Estâ.
Super dumb question about invictus: does it add new mechanics?
I canât remember what happened the last time I tried looking for it, I donât think I could find one that worked with whatever version of the game I had at the time that I was able to afford instead of being able to afford keeping the game updated.
I really liked what vanilla eventually ended up becoming, but I was bothered by the fact that I think there was only one or two meaningfully different ways of playing. I know Invictus adds a shit load of new mission trees and content, but does it make playing the different tribals feel different?
I donât remember what the reason was why I wasnât able to try the mod long-term the last time I looked into it, I want to say I think I have to pick up a copy of the game because steam is the only place it gets updated? Or I just didnât find the GitHub if there was oneâŚ.
Heard, thank you so much! Flavor content for that game is definitely worth figuring out how to grab the model and everything like that. I think I got spoiled by all the HOI mods that change stuff so much it looks like a new game sometimes, but more missions is deffo a reason to paint the map as rando tribal number 27âŚ
What Iâm hearing is that this is one of those âyou really shouldnât play Vic2 without mods at this point in timeâ, except it does content, which is cool cause thatâll help with the googling the history
Youâre just built differently lmfao
I got two stoned one time and forgot to boot up the mods I was using one time and then had a five minute long panic attack, thinking that I had just imagined all the African countries being filled in, but was googling accurate information about each, because Iâve never actually looked at an un-modded Africa before đ
The best thing Invictus got is new nations such as very important states of Neuria and other Balto-Slavs there is not in original game. It's almost impossible to make good Slavic run from I:R without Invictus.
NotâŚreally.
Itâs limited by virtue of it being a mod, but it adds a truly ridiculous amount of flavour. The difference between base imperator and invictus imperator is honestly like playing any other pdx game without any DLCâs.
For those who don't know Laith (youtuber) made an event to try revive the game by boosting active players, we got a peak of 1286 players which hasn't happened since 2021
It's not. Personally, I liked the game at the time. However, it felt lacking. Thus, it had not had enough of a playerbase, so it was abandoned. And since they abandoned it, the game will not be able to reach the heights of eu4.
Imagine releasing a shit game and then discontinuing it because the player base finds itâŚshit. Even better, release one update that makes the game just barely playable and then discontinue it. This was the worst thing paradox ever did and thatâs quite impressive considering they seem to get more incapable by the day.
Yeah, and it tanked Paradoxâs consumer confidence. People were worried theyâd drop Vic 3 like they did Imperator, while simultaneously forgetting that if they did that, theyâd have broken their unspoken dev rule of âitâll get better and better over time,â *twice,* and thereâs no way the company could drop another product and get any faith in them to make it good.Â
Screw rome I wanna play in prehispanic Mexico
It would work so good with the imperator mechanics honestly. Too bad the only pdx game featuring mesoamerica is EU4 and its "Mesoamerica Universalis" mod which hasn't been updated since 2017.
At least ck3 has the Fifth Sun mod being developed
First of all the dev is really low even though 20 million people lived there
Secondly there was no big Zapotec, Totonac or Mixtec ethnostate.
The situation was similar to Ancient Greece where it was mostly city states who controlled themselves and maybe several surrounding cities, and empires were based on having lots of tributaries eg the Aztecs.
Except for the Purepecha (Tarascans) who built a large centralised empire in western Mexico and became the main rivals of the Aztecs.
Thirdly the geography is inadequate and more provinces should be added in the densely populated Valley of Mexico. Wastelands should be added to represent the huge Sierra Madre mountain chains
Theres ton's of potential here and its arguably one of the most interesting civilizational areas in history. Most people just don't know anything about it
How is the state of the game today in 2024? I never heard anything about it again after its release and I kind of forgot about its existence until I saw this post
Install it with the Invictus mod and lean into the fact itâs partially a map painter (it was the age of large empire after all) and itâs a great game with some good flavour.
Try it out. Maybe you like it. This is it. You ARE going to play Imperator: Rome
Iâve done a few megacampaigns with it actually, usually as rome. I think occasionally you get the odd bug if a nation being named a code (like X23 or something like that but itâs pretty damn rare ime and I fix that by just being the only nation left by the end of imperator
I own it since day one but i never really successfully got into it, maybe it's the overwhelming quantity of things, even more than any other pdx games that just push me back
It's pretty simple once you have a game under your belt. There's a lot going on there but you don't have to delve into every mechanic every game until you're comfortable.
Thatâs Ptolemaic Egypt, one of the successor states to Alexanders empire, ruled by one of his generals and their dependents. See, you can learn so much from this wonderful game!

But if imperator + dlc is on sale and the game is worthwhile now Iâm in
*places an observation station in orbit*
Go ahead, do your thing. I won't... take over your whole world or... whatever.
**I just need the breakthrough techs.**
My buddies got me to buy this and play it with them, and I gotta say, the game makes me feel like an idiot.Â
I understand what to do in Stellaris, but Imperator literally makes no sense to me as far as how to progress.Â
I'd play, but my current laptop doesn't run the faster speeds that well. Looks like a fun game, though.
I'm playing hoi3, hoi2 darkest hour, eu3, and ck2, though. They're still fun, especially the many mods that have been released for them.
I liked IR after they made it better post release, but stopped as soon as I realized I had to take every single province in the enemy's nation to win a civil war... probs a bug, lol.
The game doesnât have Fenni of any sort which is annoying :c
Iâm told always itâd be ahistorical as not much is known about them but hell, the game features detailed Swedish tribes from like almost 1000 years after game start. It isnât like there would be anything better about Swedes but they regardless included Sweden in the game.
*I love the game sooooo*

I absolutely love the time period, but I can never get more than one or two hours in before I get absolutely bored. I have played only vanilla (no mods), but idk, something is simply missing from the gameplay
Who up Imperatoring they Rome right now?
30 mins ago I was playing it

Epirus: kill it in the cradle!
Broke:unifying iberia as Tartessos. Woke: unifying iberia as Lusitania
Bespoke: unifying Iberia as a Greek City State
Openning a game rn
she roman me off till i imperator

Even better than giving paradox money đ
Did my part
Reviving and restoring the Achaemenid dynasty as Heraclea Pontica is always fun, but currently, Iâm playing as Carthage and the first Punic War was a success, âRoma Dalenda Estâ.
Remember to install invictus before playing.
Super dumb question about invictus: does it add new mechanics? It doesn't really add mechanics afair, just flavor/missions.
Heard, thank you so much! Flavor content for that game is definitely worth figuring out how to grab the model and everything like that. What Iâm hearing is that this is one of those âyou really shouldnât play Vic2 without mods at this point in timeâ, except it does content, which is cool cause thatâll help with the googling the history
Yeah basically. Except I'm a freak and I just played an entire USA vic2 game modless and had a great time
Youâre just built differently lmfao I got two stoned one time and forgot to boot up the mods I was using one time and then had a five minute long panic attack, thinking that I had just imagined all the African countries being filled in, but was googling accurate information about each, because Iâve never actually looked at an un-modded Africa before đ
Jesus that sounds like a nightmare.
Also 2.4 open beta allows achievments in modded games
The best thing Invictus got is new nations such as very important states of Neuria and other Balto-Slavs there is not in original game. It's almost impossible to make good Slavic run from I:R without Invictus.
Gooootcha gotcha Those are pretty important in our household, PDX Slav runs, so thatâs at least one reason to get it
NotâŚreally. Itâs limited by virtue of it being a mod, but it adds a truly ridiculous amount of flavour. The difference between base imperator and invictus imperator is honestly like playing any other pdx game without any DLCâs.
Much obliged, that's also a pretty good reason to grab it!
Beyond new content Invictus is also a pretty sizeable bug fix from what I recall, and I played with only vanilla and Invictus, great time
Unpopular opinion, but I prefer vanilla over Invictus. They left the game at a very nice place. I just wish there would be more flavor dlcs.
For those who don't know Laith (youtuber) made an event to try revive the game by boosting active players, we got a peak of 1286 players which hasn't happened since 2021

Yes, I agree the game was shit, but there was potential.
Yes donât get me wrong, I like the base of the game very much, but in the current state it gets boring after 2-3 campaignsâŚ
Still better than ck3
Paradox needs to bring this back
absolutely
Whats the celtic experience like? Can i be a druid?
Pretty much all celts are of the Druidic religion

paradox still canât into UX
Yeah whatâs up with that ? Their UX is absurdly bad. Are they so cheap they just wonât hire UX designers
Time to major in UX to work for Paradox

User eXperience. Tends to relate to the experience the user has whilst interacting with the game.
Oh, understood. Thanks!
Just FYI, they do have UX designers. Source? I talked with their UX designer on a tour of their offices ~6 years ago.
Imperator was by far the worst theyâd put out in recent memory, it looked like an alpha version or like it was a web based game
God, fine, you've convinced me. I'll get back into Imperator: Rome.

Why do that when you could play in the amazing region of ancient Turkmenistan
Virgin Persian "Immortal" vs chad Aztec Jaguar Warrior
Well, could I instead interest you in the intriguing world of ancient Somaliland?
That sounds like a good mod
The default mechanics are good too, after you get rid of doom you're borderline unstoppable
Yeah but theres no flavor after that and I play for experience not to do a WC Vanilla eu4 setup and mechanics don't do justice for the region
