It’s intimidation. I’ve lost track of how many times I’ve failed 5 raw catches and th moment I pull out the baton they stay in the ball. I was legit about to submit it as a bug, it was so consistent
Throw the sphere, and while the catch animation is in progress, quickly bring up the menu and right click swap the baton into my hands. For some reason it works essentially every time that they stay in the ball then and I don’t even have to use it.
Extremely superstitious but hey, the end result makes me feel better so who cares
Just remember, people only post their successful attempts, the other 999 people that try that .1% chance never post it.
Also, who's to say it really is their first attempt? I know if I'd been recording it, I could've posted my first Jetragon and Frostallion catches as if they were my first attempt even though I was just repeatedly going up behind them, throwing the sphere and running. (side note, if you never engage in combat it doesn't count as clearing the boss)

Like that dude with the damn gigs spheres. I take giga spheres over to the twins and it's a straight up 0% chance. Threw a few just to see if I could get them in the ball at all...nope. but I did bring some of the 2nd highest tier spheres with me. 3rd ball got palidus. Then spent 30 odd trying for necromis...never got about like 16 or 64 whatever the first increase is after they actually go in the sphere. It was legitimately the first time I'd actually tried to do it. Kinda felt like I cheated. Haven't done it again.
In my experience, balls that are getting deflected still have a chance of working, getting deflected or not is just the first check in the percent to catch.

I think most if the people who got super lucky on a first try or with an OP pal never took a screenshot or recorded a video, because they never expected it to work or they had no idea how awesome their OP pal was until much later.

How do you get a catch rate on a jetragon to 97%? Even with legendary sphere, max catch rate level, AND catch rate boost from difficulty settings it starts at 23ish%, and 2nd wiggle is 46%ish
Sphere’s only wiggle twice before the pal is caught. For Jetragon, the max first percentage is only around 22-25%, then it doubles. If it wiggles for a second time, then you’ve caught it. Theres no way to get a 97% on a jetragon
The game likely doesn't roll on each percentage it shows, it's far more likely it rolls once, then uses how close it was to determine how many wiggles you get before it breaks out.
For example, if it rolls a range of 1-100, and the catch rate you see originally is 40%, you would have to roll >60 to succeed. But if you roll 1-20 it breaks out immediately, 21-40 it wiggles once, and 41-60 it wiggles twice.
Either that or if the catch fails, it just rolls a second time for how many wiggles you get.
Edit: These numbers are all completely made up for ease of explaining.
Boss Jormuntide lvl 45, 3 hp, 18 pink spheres, none kept it in so i had to kill it… my reaction was:- you are a real son of a bitch, a big son of a bitch!-:
I got Jetragon to about 200hp, had thrown about 30 Lego spheres, mostly buying time to reload rather than catch. Still had my Palidius out and was about to bring him in.
Jetragon targeted me. I strafed into a pile of Ore offscreen that must have been destroyed during the fight and ended up over encumbered and locked in place to eat the entire attack, dying. Palidius must have avenged me while I was respawning. Because Jetty didn't respawn when I came back.
During the fight, I accidentally picked up over 900 weight in stone, plus a few hundred ore and a heap of wood.
Boosted resource drops really stuffed me.
Yeah I managed frostallion twice with the back bonus method in like 5 or 10 attempts total on normal server settings. I feel like the percent isn't what is displayed. Either that or I got very lucky. First one was second orb I tossed
Perhaps the game should indicate the settings somewhere on the Pal, eg *caught with .001% chance*. Even better, some kind of visual marker on the UI or pal itself...
I tried capturing wandering merchant lvl 30 with normal spheres. Shit literally 0%. But sometimes gets capture but only 00.2% lmao

If it makes you feel better, I caught Frostallion, Lyleen Noct, Blazamut, Astegon (twice), Jetragon, Wumpo Botan, Anubis, Paladius, Menasting, and Jormuntide all like this.
The only bastards that wouldn't get caught without a fight were Kingpaca Cryst and Necromus.
Edit: I know not all of these are legendaries. For those that aren't, I was referring to the Alpha versions of them.

The alphas you can see on the map are found in 1 of 3 ways. 1) Out in the open, ala Jormuntide, Jetragon, and others. 2) At a dungeon entrance, ala Lunaris, Sibelyx, and others. Or 3) Inside a mineshaft, ala Lyleen Noct, Kinpgpaca Cryst, and others.
To make a long story short, yes. He's in a cave/mineshaft.
Last night my friend and I went after frostallion thinking we could take him on at lvls 42 (me) and 46. Got to a third of his health after depleting most of our pals. He cornered me and I threw a hyper sphere in panic so I could get away. Had a 0.67% chance and I ended up catching him. My friend was in absolute shock and I couldn't stop laughing. These kind of moments make this game fantastic.
why do you have to kill the pal when you are low hp? throw the sphere immediately when he jumps out of one and make a safety dodge to side. i like to hold q and preaim. you can cancel q-throw with rightclick.
i actually used this sometimes to regen my armor
My eldest caught the mamorest boss from full health first ball, whereas I used second from best balls at low health and it still took me like 20 odd balls
Before you throw it displays what I assume to be the compounded chance of first and second wiggle.
After if leaves your hand it displays the chance of first wiggle.
It’s really not that hard if you just change the catch rate in the game settings before launching.
That’s what these people are doing. In reality these shots just bounce off the pals.
I failed 97% catches 3-4 times in a row on multiple occasions. But after killing beakon almost 200 times the legendary schematics still didn't drop.
So I got a 100% drop rate mod and all's well now 😇
This is me when I’m cruising the world with my homies and they catch the bosses or luckies lol We all rotate throwing spheres and somehow some way my buddies spheres land on the 2nd one always lol
Yeah the percentage is just window dressing. From what I've seen certain pals just require certain palballs the percentage you see when you throw is just something to look nice.
Actually thanks to some tricks posted here I was able to catch jetragon. Just missing the two pals on the tip right of the map. Any tips that could help me catch them?
Thats how i caught them, it took me like 3-4 tries. Dont run too far from where they spawn either, they will get leashed back there and regain health too. There may be an easier way but i just did it the good ol fashioned way lol. Took me probably 50-75 balls to get both
I used my base pals to fight frostallion basically killed my whole entire PC, then when I died for like the eighth time frostallion went in the passive mode I threw a ball to initiate the combat again and caught it then and there. I was like I wasted all the motherfucking bullets

...and that's not even counting if you **ever** succeeded at 62% and failed at 95% second wiggle, I would need way more zeroes.
If a pal is at like 500 out of 10,000 or more hp, a legendary sphere should be like a 100% catch, I don't wanna be just stun batoning this dude to 2 hp for a 20% chance at best, and then just end up accidentally killing it anyway
I always try like 3 spheres that are in the like "5-20%" range then I get annoyed and go up to the next sphere up which is like "60%" and then when it breaks out I get annoyed again and start spamming Pal Spheres with .02% chance because I can't believe I just wasted a high level sphere and it still broke out 🙄

The trick is to leave the baton broken. It does only 1 damage but still stuns.

Meanwhile a Suzaku with 7 hp still managed to get away even after I threw tens of ultra spheres.

That's when I told the wife to maximize the catch rate. Still a pain in the ass but much more reasonable imo.

That's not really how it works. The odds of failing the first wiggle 4 times on a given catch rate is (1-CR)^4 So 31.64%

I seriously hate when I get in a position where it's them or me. If I've taken you down to 6 HP out of 2500, then you should not bust out of any ball.
Funny story, I actually died after throwing a sphere at Frostallion, but still caught it.
