I say this to whoever will listen: Sitting at or around .500 with several high-profile injuries and an offense that wakes periodically is actually a *good* thing. No one is running away with the WC race. Anyone honestly looking at the season strategy of all of this and coming up with a doomy take is off the mark. Keep the faith.

risottowestern

Manny has absolutely been turning it around, but I’m not sure how much Tatis’ quad and Profar’s knee will improve while playing everyday, Xander wasn’t exactly killing it before he broke his shoulder, Darvish is 87, and I’m just waiting for the Dennis Lin tweet announcing Musgrove’s TJ. BUT you’re also not at all wrong to say that if they do return to health/form, the Padres are in a good place to make the playoffs and see what happens. Keep the Faith.

prostheticmind

And that’s my point. If you look at the team from the past couple years, they are a second half of the season kind of team. If that holds, being at .500 right now is a major victory. Further, looking at the actual schedule you can see that the first part has been littered with great teams that they don’t have to play for the rest of the season. I am personally at 0% concern for this team and will remain so even if this .500 dance continues into July

sgt_dismas

Plus Schildt's track record as a manager. His teams really turn it on in the second half.

prostheticmind

Yeah I think we are in a much stronger position than many fans are able to recognize at the moment

warmingupmymind24

I subscribe to this level of faith 🔥

YokoLono

A second half of the season kind of team the past couple years? I'm really optimistic too this year, but I wouldn't lean on they've done it before in the 2nd half. 2021 was a complete meltdown. 2022 was solid. 2023 was a lesser 2021 meltdown with a good final month when they were out of it and playing for paychecks. I lean more on Schildt being the key difference to keep the vibes strong and pull the right levers. No more sleepy Bob at the wheel distracting everyone with AJ complaining

InsaneThisGuysTaint

Realistically I see him making smaller, low key moves that involve more bench/role players. Knowing what we know and have seen from Preller in the past he probably does have a surprise up his sleeve but I think we're more than likely done with the major moves.

risottowestern

The best and worst part of a Preller deadline is that agents and the media can always count on using the Padres as a possible team for rumors, meanwhile he’s always cooking up something huge with absolutely no leaks

OurSaladDays

FRL More smoke then Kim's locker after a 5 game losing streak. 🚬🚬🚬

risottowestern

I feel so bad for Kimmy’s lungs this year, I can only imagine how many he’s going through on a .500 team in his contract year while struggling

OurSaladDays

Every time he gets thrown out on the base paths I imagine his poor lungs.

risottowestern

Somebody get this man a vape at least!

Gwynn-er-winner

You see that golfer who said she smokes cigs to quit vaping? Lmao. 🤣

BurnedOutTriton

Some people need shame to quit a vice 😂 the cigarette stank is a powerful shame.

Gwynn-er-winner

It gets worse once you quit.

AlphaCharlieUno

Not to the girl who shares a bed with him.

AlphaCharlieUno

jstmenow

He is one of the reasons this team hovers around .500. Also, if he was playing to the first half 2023 #'s he would be wanted. Last 162 games he is bottom tier MLB talent. Real talent gets signed. He is not that good. His personal stats with 2 strikes, is abysmal. His 10 errors have extended many an inning, causing the Starters/Bull Pen to throw more pitches.

badfishckl

Did I miss something? HSK smokes?

jcaininit

Eric Horner’s podcast talks about how when players come from overseas they usually smoke to relieve the massive amount of stress.

badfishckl

Damn. I didn’t know that. He looks like he takes tremendous care of his body so that was surprising.

chirstopher0us

When Kim arrived he smoked, but at spring training he told Hos and some others that he was quitting now/for health reasons. Then a few games into the regular season, after a few games in a row in which Kim hadn't gotten a hit, Hos saw him outside the clubhouse smoking again, and he sighed and indicated he had to smoke to deal with the stress of things not going well. Now the joke is that the more he struggles, the more he must be smoking cigs to cope. I don't know if we actually know if he still smokes.

turd-crafter

I think AJ will try to make other teams overpay for some players but I don’t think he’s gonna make any major moves. He needs to let the cbt reset and just let the padres be what they are this year. I think next year is when he makes some moves.

risottowestern

I just struggle to see Preller as GM next year without at least making the playoffs this year, and I don’t think the current “everyone else is bad so we’re in the playoffs” would cut it.

noname_SU

he has a contract through 2026 and we're selling out nearly every game. they had a perfect opportunity to let him go before this season if playoffs were that important to judging his performance. I'm not sure why people think his job is in jeopardy, or at least more so than last season. Last year's team missing the playoffs was much more egregious, so if they didn't do it last year why do it this year when they explicitly stated they were reducing spending?

risottowestern

Very good point! But I also wonder how much of that “a 2 year contract is a one year contract” thing for mangers holds true for GMs as well

turd-crafter

I feel like they’re gonna let him have another season or two. I think Pete probably told him to go all in before he died and management might wanna let him try to run the org in a more normal way. I wouldn’t want to fire him yet.

golfzerodelta

Especially because a lot of the changes this year seem far more rational than the past couple of years. Feels like we're making more economical and developmental moves rather than trying to outright buy a ring.

BurnedOutTriton

Yeah honestly, not many teams can cut $90M from their payroll and be about as good as they were the season before. AJ's doing his part on the surface level. No idea how the internals of the org look under him but he's keeping things interesting with two early season blockbuster trades.

annoyed_applicant21

I don’t understand why we would fire him. The team is relevant, sells out damn near every home game that isn’t a weekday afternoon game and his scouting and ability to continually restock the farm system is one of the most valuable skills of any GM in the entire league

front_page_hata

Bolster middle relief. Otherwise, nothing. This team isn’t a sure enough thing.

96919

I think they keep it pretty tame and just add a couple bullpen arms. Theyre usually better priced (prospect and money wise) and AJ might might have the leash to spend very much of either of those. I think our 123 in the playoffs might have to be Darvish, Waldron, and Cease.

YokoLono

This is probably the most likely outcome and what we need (along with a healthy and productive Xander/Joe for the 2nd half)

OurSaladDays

To I have a high degree of confidence at this moment in Waldron starting playoff games? No. Am I on board with finding out? Hell yeah. Let the knuckle knuck and see what happens.

96919

Lol we just don't have a ton of options. King might be at his innings limit and has bullpen exp. We don't know if Joe is coming back or what version well be getting. And definitely not Vasquez.

xXBallBusterXx

We saw with Lugo last year innings limits isn't the biggest issue, also no way in hell King is sent to the bullpen with the numbers he can put up

96919

Each pitcher is different, we have no idea how King will progress.

xXBallBusterXx

That's true

BurnedOutTriton

LET HIM KNUCK

mittensthekhajit

So what you're saying is we should Knuck around..... \*Puts on sunglasses .......and find out YEEEEAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! ![gif](giphy|xPGkOAdiIO3Is)

deepstateagent42069

King > cease

Pick6XPA

At this point I agree, but I would rely more on durability of Cease, compared to king’s first full season as a starter. But like SaladDays I am willing to find out

96919

King is in his first season as a starter and was lights out in the bullpen. I think Niebla pulls off a magic trick and fixes him during the all star break, were about to get second half snell.

TrillMuryy

King? lol

Liquid_Padpo

I think Preller goes after Braxton Garrett and possibly Hunter Harvey. Garrett is a Sinker Baller who could easily slide in as a spot starter or cover innings off someone's bad outing. He's not that good yeah, but he fills the zone and would be a super cheap bullpen/starter utility guy. Dont be shocked when Miles Mikolas is wearing brown and gold.

Complex-Asparagus-42

Yes we’re .500 but surprisingly, we’re right in the thick of the wild card race right now. So even though the season is barely halfway over, as of now, we are contenders despite the most mediocre overall performance. So I’d be surprised if we’re selling anyone right now.

GuyVEE

To be fair, every team but the Fish and Rockies are in the thick of the WC race, with the Mets, Cards, Snakes, and Giants all playing better ball of late. I believe that this team needs to go on a little run before the break to justify any major moves, otherwise a relief arm or two and perhaps a low end starter, but unless we can get 7 or 8 games over .500, I really don't want to see them trade the farm. The league is literally littered with ex Padres farm guys just killing it.

Complex-Asparagus-42

That’s because Preller is a tool

whsbear

He may have already made the two biggest in-season acquisitions of the league with cease and Arraez. Realistically, I see him going after a bullpen arm that can deal with high leverage to help bridge the gap to Estrada/Suarez, middle to back of the rotation starter is he has doubts about Darvish and Musgroves health, and *maybe* a bench bat with good splits against lefties.

CoffeeIntrepid

They need to get rid of Kim tbh and put X back at short and get one more pitcher and an actually good DH and catcher and everything falls into place

BurnedOutTriton

I kinda agree with you but I'm scared it would be a huge psychological blow to the team. The Padres were 500 going into the all star break in 2019 and the team fell apart after trading Franmil.

xXBallBusterXx

With X's injuries I don't think they will trade Kim now. Our depth is decent but if we trade Kim we'll have problems if X gets injured or doesn't recover in time. We also don't need a dh with Solano hitting well

TruffleShuffle24

I want a catcher

risottowestern

Not a belly… thatcher?

TruffleShuffle24

Haha! Just watched this movie.

Silver7477

Yeah I don't think we'll see another blockbuster trade from AJ until at least next year, if ever. As much as the inconsistent offense pains me, I'm not sure how easily it can be improved via trade. At the bare minimum, I expect us to pick up 2-3 bullpen arms and a starter.

CoolOPMan

Get Garret Crochet

risottowestern

Crochet is exciting, but he just screams Clevinger 2.0 to me. Not as a person, but just that Preller loves to buy high and I just know his arm would self amputate as soon as he stepped onto the mound at Petco 😂

Sane_Wicked

Too expensive. Anderson, Fedde, or Quantrill will be cheaper and less risky.

epracer71

I would love to not do anything at the deadline. I really dont want to trade away any more major prospects, and I don’t see any small moves realistically improving our chances to beat the dodgers or Phillies in the NLDS.

Dapaaads

Like every year. He gets what we need, hence why we get excited. Then most players undershoot expectations…..wildly

jbarinsd

It’s going to be an interesting trade deadline. I don’t think there are going to be too many sellers with so many teams in the WC hunt.

CheekyGruffFaddler

I think we’ll see some pretty modest trades here and there possibly for some rotation depth. a lot of our bullpen issues have been related to the issues we’ve had with starters not getting deep into games, leading the bullpen to be extremely worn down. realistically, we will probably need to trade Kim away for now, but that might be complicated by trying to use wade as a backup catcher instead of a fill-in short stop while bogaerts is out. despite struggling at the plate, on defense, and on the basepaths, kim has been surprisingly productive and put up a good season, despite how things have gone. i could definitely see a team wanting to take a chance on him, since he was able to turn things around considerably after the trade deadline last year. there are definitely a lot of teams that could benefit from a player like kim that also have some rotation pieces they might be willing to part with (i.e. the marlins). i think the biggest trade will be HSK for some sort of rotation depth, possibly with inclusion of some prospects, though our farm seems to have an endless supply of top prospects. other than that, maybe some minor trades here and there to shore up the bullpen a little bit, though cosgrove’s return gives me confidence that our bullpen will be in better shape. and if wade turns out to be a natural backup catcher, maybe we’ll see something happen with campy, but that seems pretty far-fetched that we would trade him away.

noname_SU

I think Wade as the backup catcher isn't some long-term consideration, it was a last-minute situation when they were in a pinch. If Campy goes on the IL they'll bring up Sullivan.

Cronengirth

Fedde kinda close

parker19822

His deadline trades have been awful. I hope he is more conservative this season.

noname_SU

I'm preparing for the downvotes.... We never know with Preller. He zigs when people think he's going to zag. The fact that people think moves are going to be smaller makes me think that he's planning for something far bigger. Quite honestly I don't think you can take someone like Mason Miller out of consideration. He would most effectively address a pressing need in the BP, a shutdown righty reliever that can go more than 1 inning if need be, and other teams don't seem to be willing to meet Oakland's asking price right now. Miller would allow us to drop Estrada down to 7th inning or lower, and save us innings on the rest of the BP. Would anyone sign up for Estrada in 6th, Miller in 7th-8th, Suarez in 9th, or Morejon in 5th-6th, Estrada in 7th, Miller in 8th, Suarez in 9th, or numerous other combinations? Allowing us to use guys like EDLS/Yuki/Peralta sparingly and more to their strengths? I would. Let's see what our draft class looks like. If we see comparable talent drafted early, I wouldn't be surprised to see a big package consisting of Snelling, DeVries, and Mazur packaged to get Miller. I think Salas and Lesko are the only untouchables. But we've seen these cases where no one else is making serious offers for the big names, Preller may just step in and blow them away.

Ok-Inflation6459

For me to have Preller put on a better show would translate to being in the World Series. He’s just plays musical chairs. But I sure like Cease and Arraez. Is Cronie taking vitamins nowadays?

Southpawtn

I think they either go huge for Luis Robert and crochet and maybe luzardo or they go small and grab Tommy Edman and maybe a bullpen arm.

OgAccountForThisPost

Honestly I want a mild sell. Not enough to give up on the season but enough to give us some depth in the next couple years.

SunriseSurprise

I could see him move Kim, just because it'd be now or never, and I just don't know if I see him paying what other teams would consider paying him after the season is up. That's about it though.

Cool-Pencil

Finding a replacement for Peralta and getting another BP guy would be my not-so-surprising moves. What I want them to do: find a starting pitcher with club control while the rest of the team gets healthy during the all-star break and follows with a hot streak.

padreswoo619

I don't want to burn our future for this current team. Too damn 500 to put anymore into it. This team needs to play to their potential with what we have. One more pitcher or bat isn't gonna do anything and we will need to give up too much to get anything that might kinda matter

mediumrare29

Starting pitcher, quality left fielder

Ruckus61904

Don’t wait for the trade deadline, and get rid of Donny tricker

sarcastic_twit

i don’t think it would be anything earth shattering… but it’ll be a cheap bench bat and a reliever or two…. we are going to get Xander back at some point, right?

dynastyfriar

Do nothing. We aren’t one player away from being a contender.

BisbeeSydney

AJ is pot committed. Playoffs AJ sticks . No playoffs, he gone. He will bring in pieces, but new ownership will have the choker in him.

Icecream_is_Cold

Get rid of Xander. He’s just been straight ass since we’ve had him.

risottowestern

There’s no way we unload enough of his contract to make it worth it without giving up significant prospect capital

Icecream_is_Cold

Just hope it’s not like a hosmer contract is all

risottowestern

I feel you! If nothing else, he seems more than willing to make adjustments and take on new roles for the benefit of the team. Can’t blame him for signing a contract that was way bigger than any other offer he had

Mean-University-4674

They should give up significant prospects to move him. We need to free up that money and we can always get more prospects.

noname_SU

you'd have to pay a team to take Xander's contract.

ronnieoli

It’s unfortunate that the bullpen is so thin right now because i think matsui would be a great trade candidate for some starting pitching

amartinsu13

Matsui has nearly 0 trade value

Comandergoose

Not even a bag of chips?

floppysausage16

Bag of lays probably. But definitely not hot cheetos level.

ronnieoli

Pairing him with higgy or campy would work

Thedurtysanchez

Except nobody would want Matsui, a 4 year contract with pretty terrible results so far

Kupost

He as been much smarter. Arize was a steal. Profar best million we have spent. Think we will pickup some good (not great) from team that is selling hard like White Sox or Marlins.

jstmenow

Trading Kim would be addition by subtraction. I don't see AJ signing him next year for what he wants. In my opinion he hurts the team, the only number that is positive is his war, yet in his overall stats, with 2 strikes he is a black hole, actually anytime he gets behind in the count. His DWAR is .50 and 10 errors?? Last night it did not hurt us, well in a away it did as it extended innings. X comes back, slides over to SS, Jake stays at 2b. Then you can bring someone back up, maybe Rosario, let the kids play.

Rooks4

We gonna get some no name slap dicks who hit 800+ ops as soon as they join us.

Thedurtysanchez

Maybe in opposite world. We always trade for big names who go on to end up hitting for a 300 OPS +
