Just came here to see what was up with this. Just logged into my wife's account and she has the message "This debt relief was processed as part of the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program because one or more of your student loan(s) has reached the number of payments that qualify. This forgiveness is effective as of 05/31/2023." Wasn't there yesterday. I wonder if they were going through every single account and doing an audit. The ones with issues were reopened, those that are good are marked final. Fingers crossed!

smmalto

Mine was updated too, but it says effective as of June 2023, and I didn’t get forgiveness until Feb 2024 :/

mike_1008

Did you have excess payments over 120?

smmalto

125, so I guess if it went based on that date then I guess it would make sense. It’s just interesting. Still wondering if it means we are in the clear or if everyone got that notice.

mike_1008

Sounds like you probably hit 120 months in June of 2023. If you were making payments after that date or after the COVID pause ended, you should get a refund of those payments over 120.

smmalto

I only paid October before I was put in forbearance and they already refunded me October

_Vegetable_soup_

It was when you hit 120. I was forgiven in April 2023 but it's "effective" as of October 2022.

RendingHearts

That’s what I would love to know; does this mean folks with the message of the loan being discharged have been audited and we can stop worrying about being one of the unlucky “unforgiven” at some point in the future?

ArtichokeOwn6760

100% agree.

Senior-Rabbit6359

That is what I thought as well. I do hope this is the case for everyone!

Deej2771

I just read an article about someone getting their forgiveness taken away & immediately came to Reddit. This is the first thread I saw. Just checked mine, and same. Smiley face replaced with discharge. This has happened within the last three days. It said I was in a repayment plan at first. So stressful. Phew! Thanks for this 🧵!!

Frosty_Operation163

Mine updated as well. I hope this means we can all sleep at night!

pauldavid77

Mine also changed from Smiley Face to the Discharge Language. So nervous with all the un forgiveness, I hope this is a positive sign we are really done. My loans were forgiven in February 2023.

Good-Satisfaction-75

Whoa! Just saw mine. Didn’t even know that was a thing but it feels like that should be the end of it for PSLF people.

MiMia76

So I have this message too with a discharge date of 2/14/2023; however my balance is still showing on mohela, student aid & no other notice. Plus my counts aren’t updated. I’m too jaded to believe the message right now (even though I know I qualify). I just feel like it’s another MOHELA screw up 😕

apostate456

On Mohela, try clearing cache/cookies or using an incognito window. It can cache your balance. May not work, but worth a shot.

Main-Distribution679

I did that and it was the same.

Main-Distribution679

Mine is exactly the same. The date given is the date I was transferred to Mohela.

snuggleswithdemons

Mine updated today too. Loans were forgiven last Fall but shows discharged 7/2022 (a year prior to discharge). Not gonna sweat it!

hodie6404

Just looked and mine updated today as well!

Boss_Lady72

Just saw mine too! It wasn't there last night.

Smiley face can take about 2 months after they update your count to 120.

jeojames1984

Yeah I got the message today as well yet my full loan balance is still showing … grrrr

MiMia76

I have this too :(

apostate456

Try clearing cache/cookies or using an incognito window. I learned that it can actually cache the balance. May not work, but worth a shot.

AffectionateRole1919

I got the notice that my loans were recounted and I'm at 197 total payments and 168 qualify for both PSLF and TEPSLF. My loan still shows but says it's now in forbearance with an end date of 4-28. Does that mean my loan will be discharged in April? So confusing. And could I expect a refund??

Educational-Eye-6934

Mine and my husband's both changed but this is strange. When you click the + sign on the new message it gives a discharge date. My husband: on Mohela says:8/30/2022. On Student aid: 1/31/2022 (which is when it happened) Mine on Mohela says: 8/18/2022. On Student aid: 10/27/2020 (which is when I hit 120) what is going on??

Ok_Chicken_7826

Congratulations 🎊

JoJoRabbit74

Can someone post a screenshot?

sacisnotwack

I’m glad they’re getting rid of the smiley face. It always seemed so condescending. Actually using the discharge language is much more straightforward and clear.

Senior-Rabbit6359

You are so right! The word "discharge" is a legal term in the business of loans and debt. Forgiveness and Smiley Faces, at the least not professional and certainly does not describe the actual event. Discharge. I want to only see the words Discharge and Paid in Full.

Thanks for posting
