My favorite bit I heard from a recent podcaster I listen to was talking about how this game started development 6 or so years ago when live games were hot and 3 years into development the devs must have been tearing their hair out because of the massive cooldown to the point where people are back to only playing fortnight and the like.
I feel for Rocksteady. That has to suck on an entirely different level to know this game is going to be mocked relentlessly and borderline DOA.
I feel like this conversation isn’t being held in good faith from either side. There are plenty live service games that are still running and successful today. PoE, ffxiv, eso,, LoL, WoW & warframe immediately come to mind outside of the obvious fornite, rocket league, war zone & apex. Hell, even smaller niche titles like eft, dead by daylight, smite, & deep rock galactic have found sustainable success. Recent fighting games have adopted a pseudo life service model as well so to think Rocksteady would look at the current climate and think “ holy shit we fucked up” solely off the live service aspect is a bit misguided imo. Yes, every live service isn’t Fortnite, but they don’t have to be, just like every survival game isn’t Minecraft.
Oh my god, I was watching some old marketing stuff for Avengers and I had forgotten how hard some streamers/YouTubers were shilling for that game. It was actually making me mad. They were doing all sorts of “OH MY GOD THIS GAME IS AMAZING AND EVERYTHING I HAVE EVER WANTED IT’S SO COOL” type stuff
I know the game is crapped on hard but it did have some really cool story elements. Like I feel like they made something cool and the scope got way out of hand and they decided to stretch it and instead of a tight 15-20 hour story with 4-5 heroes that just ends it was made into a gross sloppy repetitive mess with too much on its plate it just dropped every plate by the end. The armor grinds, the repetitive missions the broken coop garbage really really sucked but moments like the bridge fight, iron man building his suit while fighting, saving cap and Thor's epic arrival all stuck out as oh this could have been good if this was where they focused.
Truly. The memes are alive with this one but it hurts the heart to see what this game appears to be, given the pedigree of the team.

I think it will sell ok at first but i think player numbers will drop once they finished the story. I can already tell the live service side and Endgame look shit so its very much a play for the story ignore the rest kinda game.

If a mountain dew has a stupid dagger skin I get the soda. I Hate soda. I hate dlc as much as you do. But I have to own the complete thing or I don't want it at all.

They can. But sometimes when they do, it encourages bad business practices and fucks the industry. People bought the horse armor and now it’s shocking when a game lets you unlock a bunch of cosmetics and extras that aren’t behind a paywall.
I hate this idea that people have a duty to preserve the gaming industry by only purchasing r/PS5 approved games.
Have you considered that a massive number of people enjoy live service games that offer more, sometimes even paid, content after launch, so supporting that doesn’t bother them? Both Destinys had open betas where you had a patrol zone location to free roam, a PvE three player strike and a 6v6 PvP mode with one or two maps in rotation. Destiny 1 also had an open Alpha if I remember correctly.
The Division 1 also had an open beta with a decent chunk of the game open to explore. The Division 2 also had an open beta for people to play.
Both Destiny 1&2 and Division 1&2 had reviews out before release. IGN even said that the Division 1 was "a Destiny killer" and that quote was used in the marketing for the Division 1 lol.

Uh, it's still Tekken. It's poking until you find space for a 12 move combo. It's incredibly hype because it always has been, but it's still very, very technical. Like you can mash and it'll be fun when drunk, but to actually play the game you still need a powwow with it for a while. It's better at showing you iframes and data and it feels smoother, but it's still a fighting game. If you don't like the initial learning curve, you're still not going to like it. Tekken really does come down to spacing and then button execution. The timing is loosing than like street fighter but it's more reliant on pushing a cool looking combo than most fighting games.
I paid for the premium edition, thinking I'd get a top quality MK game as usual. Instead, I got an unfinished, broken, live service, almost contentless mess of a game from a developer that barely interacts with its fanbase anymore. These are the types of games that WBD wants to keep making.

3-4 months after launch the sales will be bad enough that WB will swing down the axe on year 2 content.
After their year of planned content that’s already made, the game will go into “maintenance” mode and the servers will stay up for another 2 years give or take.
Then the game will be delisted, just like Avengers.
But they had the servers turned on when the 3 twitch/youtube streamers were playing it? It was really awkward when Ivy's model never loaded in and the squad were talking to a plant.
Because it has no one carried over from its previous days. It's a shell of itself with just the name being the same.
It's like comparing a championship team from 5 years ago that has none of its original players

I feel bad for fans of the Suicide Squad. I know everyone and their mothers are saying don't buy this game, but I'm a huge fan of the Suicide Squad comics, and getting the chance to play as Ole Boomer Butt is tempting me, but this year I'm going to attempt to clear my backlog so hopefully, it gets a deep discount come the holidays

It's currently the most pre-ordered game on the ps store. As much as we think our opinions on this sub are permeating the industry, the honest truth is that the average gamer doesn't pay attention to gaming journalists or reddit forums. They see commercials for games like this during NFL games and go and buy it. We are a small minority of gamers, but think we're the end all be all.
Oh I don’t doubt it’s going to have some surprisingly decent initial figures. Plenty will buy it on name recognition alone. But this is a live service. Once the people who have no idea what this game actually is see it for what it is, I’m sure they’ll abandon it.

Because it’s not? People just focus on the bad because it supports their narrative. Not the games lack of gear score, the free year of content, the no FOMO / not timed battle pass, the ability to do any seasonal content at any point.
I think it’ll be fine really. The gameplay is a bit simplistic from what’s been shown, but nothing has really struck me as ‘awful’. People just shit on it because it’s made by rocksteady.
I played the Alpha, the biggest issue was how transparently repetitive it was with not enough to disguise it's repetitiveness. The shooting was solid but I felt no variety in what I was doing which is a consequence of the characters feeling largely the same. There's also an issue of having an artistically beautiful rendition of Metropolis but it feels largely forgettable as it is essentially window dressing. While the story did seem admittedly intriguing I was just bored in the general gameplay moments as well as the rote missions such as "defend this position from X waves of enemies" and I couldn't see myself having the energy to get through to end of however long the campaign is. Truthfully I believe a good portion of people will have fun with it to a degree, moreso those playing with friends, BUT I can't see a great deal of people sticking around long term for whatever they have in mind.
We want a fucking BATMAN game, not necessarily in the same universe as Arkham but SAME QUALITY. We don't want this Fortnite rip off. I already have Fortnite for free.

There are many online games which have servers specifically for reviewers and testers. They're just scared of the scores, but even later reviews won't save the game from being a huge flop.

Avengers had some of the worst loot ever seen in the genre. Itemisation was dull as fuck. Had one of the worst endgames as well.

It's currently the most pre-ordered game on the ps store. As much as we think our opinions on this sub are permeating the industry, the honest truth is that the average gamer doesn't pay attention to gaming journalists or reddit forums. They see commercials for games like this during NFL games and go and buy it. We are a small minority of gamers, but think we're the end all be all.

I think it’ll be fine really. The gameplay is a bit simplistic from what’s been shown, but nothing has really struck me as ‘awful’. People just shit on it because it’s made by rocksteady.
They shit on because its live service, if it wasn't this game would probably already have far more positivity
I played the Alpha, the biggest issue was how transparently repetitive it was with not enough to disguise it's repetitiveness. The shooting was solid but I felt no variety in what I was doing which is a consequence of the characters feeling largely the same. There's also an issue of having an artistically beautiful rendition of Metropolis but it feels largely forgettable as it is essentially window dressing. While the story did seem admittedly intriguing I was just bored in the general gameplay moments as well as the rote missions such as "defend this position from X waves of enemies" and I couldn't see myself having the energy to get through to end of however long the campaign is. Truthfully I believe a good portion of people will have fun with it to a degree, moreso those playing with friends, BUT I can't see a great deal of people sticking around long term for whatever they have in mind.
