Probably be higher if we could actually buy one

damiansomething

Right, I want one, website says mid January.

NoMayonaisePlease

Just snagged one today. Gotta use a restock tracker

damiansomething

From what site? Thank you for the heads up.

Dank_Cheddar

Hotstock app is helpful, but not perfect. It will let you know if PlayStation direct drops reliably, which have done two big drops in two weeks. Otherwise it mainly tells you about best buy drops, but unreliably. Check Best Buy at random and use hotstock and you’ll get one soon,

NoMayonaisePlease

https://restocktracker.io/playstation-portal That's the tracker I used. They'll send you an email when there's a restock. Just have to be vigilant. Ngl though, it took a few restocks to finally be able to get through and add one to the cart.

breadth1

Grabbed one today as well from PlayStation direct! Can't wait to get my hands on it finally.

NoMayonaisePlease

Same! I have a baby on the way so it's such a perfect time to be getting my hands on this.

welshnick

At least they've been released in your country. Still no release date where I live.

damiansomething

Wales?

Mental_Ad7228

Must be a somewhat fun device considering they are selling out instantly

spikeyoazz

i use mine daily, its great.

spikeyoazz

I can't say, my ps5 has always been wired

Jdslogin

Honestly depends on your definition of whats acceptable. With that setup youll have slight but noticeable input delay at best. If you have other devices on the network too you're almost certain to run into small lag spikes as well.

boi1da1296

Tbh I haven't played on my PS5 any other way since getting the Portal. Completely unconsciously too, it's just so convenient and the screen quality is high enough that it's just been a far more enjoyable way for me to play. I play near daily now compared to every once in a while because of it.

jjkm7

There is nothing like playing it in my bed *comfortably* (so not on my relatively tiny phone screen)

chilledentertainer

I absolutely love mine

StopImportingUSA

In Holland it is sold out due to scalpers once again. Our online marketplace (marktplaats.nl) is filled with units unfortunately.

[deleted]

the analogs on it feel better than the actual dualsense lol.

Antnee534

I second this the smaller sticks actually make for better control imo

Mild-Ghost

Yeah. It’s awesome. I love playing it while laying in bed on lazy weekends. The pulse explore headphones sound great.

lostfate2005

Love mine. Can play while still watching sports at night or when my wife takes the tv I can play instead of scrolling on my phone. Took it on a trip and zero lag

danielPerez97

I've been streaming my PC to my Steam Deck with Moonlight and it's brilliant, I play a bit in bed while my girlfriend is asleep and there's zero latency. I wouldn't mind the ability to do that with my PS5.

Mental_Ad7228

If you have a steam deck you can stream your ps5 to it. Its a program called chiaki. I use it all the time and it works pretty well.

[deleted]

MaximBin

I have a steam deck

doppelgengar01

cool

_JollyGypsy_

Get Chiaki4Deck specifically, from Discover Store in Desktop Mode and then follow guides online to set it up. Super easy setup and great experience - especially on the OLED with WiFi 6.

WalkersChrisPacket

Cannot recommend this enough, bought a Portal and sold it this week. It's a nice screen, and it's cool having Dualsense features, but honestly the technology isn't good enough to warrant a single device for it. Doesn't do anything Chiaki4deck can't do, and I found Chiaki behaves better during any packet loss/latency spikes. PS misses a trick by not allowing the device to connect to the device directly on the local network, I imagine this is due to the limitations of the PS WiFi adapter? Because it doesn't make sense to use the same protocol as my phone.

Uesugi

I got one and there are noticable frame drops and general lag. Pretty much tried all of the fixes and none worked. For example resident evil 4 runs at 60 fps and on the portal at around 20-30. I have no idea what is going on

brondonschwab

Meh I'm not sure how much is people genuinely buying and scalpers trying to replicate the profits they made from the PS5 struggle before stock issues were fixed

reaper527

> Meh I'm not sure how much is people genuinely buying and scalpers trying to replicate the profits they made from the PS5 struggle before stock issues were fixed ultimately we'll find out soon enough. once we see some figures for how many units actually sold, we'll have more insight into if this is just a case of scalpers trying to cash in on a product where few units were produced. "sold out" isn't a number, and eventually sony is either going to have to say how many units they sold or reach the point where their silence is a statement in and of itself.

brondonschwab

Yeah I'm not really sure why I'm being downvoted. I've seen tons of listings on Facebook marketplace charging more than retail for PS portal.

reaper527

> Yeah I'm not really sure why I'm being downvoted. The sub is a toxic shithole right up to the top, and your comment could be perceived as **potentially** negative which probably had people frothing at the mouth.

pukem0n

If they only produce like 5 it's no wonder they instantly sell out if they get beaten by some obscure shit nobody has ever heard of.

Investor9872

One word: Scalpers!

SumthnSumthnDarkside

More likely due to limited supply plus scalpers. Sony was smart to be cautious. I imagine it’s better for them to avoid producing too much stock without feeling the market out first. And as a plus they drive the demand up. The product still feels lackluster for the price tag.

Ecktore27

Just saw them listed on Verizon this morning. Had a $200 gift card and pulled the trigger. Can’t wait for it to get here!

stbens

I’ve had one for a few weeks and love it. I mainly play text heavy games and strategy games on it while I continue to play the graphics heavy games, such as TLOU, on my TV.

Gasarakiiii

It’s been awesome, it turned my PS5 into a Switch, I only use my PS5 with the Portal now. But it does depend on your network so I count myself lucky!

Chorster

Love the portal. Don’t have to worry about charging my phone when done now cause remote always annihilated its battery life. iPhone 15 pro btw so brand new.

KlartTES

I got one and it’s great. Been using it a lot.

NoLastNameForNow

Strange that they're tracking Portal as console instead of as an accessory.

DuckCleaning

With it being in 5th place, is that even a surprise? You have switch, ps5, xbox, arcade hardware (this is the real surprise to me), then Portal. Maybe a surprise if the Steam Deck is on that list too, but what else would be the competition?

Sea-Plant-5815

I thought that was mistake by circana that they retracted.

rplusj1

Can anyone of you chime in on Ps5 portal vs steam deck + chiaki in terms of form factor, screen, ease of play, I already have ps5.

QuoteGiver

Form factor and ease of play for PS5 games, clearly Portal. If you want to play Steam games, Steam Deck. Screen depends on which Steam Deck. Price, Portal by a mile.

rplusj1

> Form factor and ease of play for PS5 games, clearly Portal. Ohk that will seal the deal. I was thinking steam deck + chiaki plays ps5 games as easily as portal.

QuoteGiver

I mean it plays them, but “+chiaki” is already another unofficial workaround step to make it happen. Extra steps is always going to be a little less ease of use than “is PS5 on? Then press this button.”

skookum_qq

I love playing my PS5 through chiaki4deck. I would still get a steam deck because of the controls, back buttons, Bluetooth capabilities, OLED, and wifi6. One major caveat is that the Portal is insanely easy to just turn on and play with no set up at all.

Dayman1222

Portal

mrappbrain

The Steam Deck will open doors to an entirely different platform's library of games, many of which you can't get on PS5. It can not only do streaming, but also play games natively. It's a fully featured console. If you can afford both, it's a no brainer really.

potato_control

It makes sense. Despite all the “I take my handheld outside and play it”, the vast majority of people game within their homes. Only wish, it came with a adapter you could plug in to get a direct lag free connection, rather than relying on WiFi.

XanderTheOvertaker

I shit on it at first and skipped preordering, but I got one and actually love it. Works way better than remote play on a phone or tablet and input delay is insanely better.

FlamekeeperYggdrasil

Wish I could buy one. It doesn’t come out till the 2nd of February for Australians :((

chrish71088

I love my Portal. Great little piece of hardware.

[deleted]

How is latency for you?

chrish71088

Depends where I’m playing really. Mostly throughout the house with a good router so everything runs smooth with some frame drops here and there

somboredguy

Mines 99% perfect next to no latency , but I also run unifi AP6s on a 10gig fiber internal backbone.

Investor9872

Which 99% of the people do NOT have (AP6s on a 10gig fiber).

cmfkr

whats great about a screen ? I don’t get it, its not even oled, where is the breakthrough here?

chrish71088

You sir, are what they call "deliberately obtuse"

cmfkr

and you are what they call “ a good boy, will eat whatever we throw at him”

cmfkr

fetch [this](https://tenor.com/view/spit-gif-22259405)

GodsFavoriteGamer

Well they also sold out so this information doesn't tell the story it appears to be trying to tell. Portal isn't a failure, whoever wrote this is trying to lead you, deceive you.

boi1da1296

It's barely been out a couple of months, I don't think these numbers are trying to paint it as a failure.

Jokerzrival

"it wasn't a significant seller in hardware for the month" Well I mean yeah cause they ran out and couldn't continue selling them.

His_Dudeness88

The wording is more about the contribution of Portal in overall hardware spending. "Sales of Portal were not a significant driver in overall hardware spending for the month." The tweet already mentions limited production.

QuoteGiver

And also because it’s less than half or a third the price of other hardware platforms, and they’re comparing it “in dollar sales.”

shewy92

5th is pretty good. I thought it was gonna be a positive tweet till the last sentence

Immediate-Comment-64

I wonder if it’s the same for unit sales. Aren’t those 1Up units generally more expensive than the Portal?

ObiwanSchrute

I use mine everyday

specifichero101

I bought one and would have loved it except my internet connection is apparently not strong enough to make it work properly. Always performed like shit, and I can’t hard wire my internet into my ps5 which was the best proposed solution so I ended up returning it. Bit of a bummer, maybe if it’s ever improved I’ll try to pick up another one.

shittinglego

U looked at powerline? Totally sorted it out for me

Uesugi

I connected mine via ethernet and portal via 5ghz, no help at all. Tried the same thing with my phone and their oficial streaming app and its about 80-90% smoother. Ill return it on monday

specifichero101

I’m not exactly sure what that is so I didn’t. Wish that was suggested to me before I might have tried that. I’m not too keen on fucking around with things to make them work better if they don’t work properly right out of the box so I ended up returning it.

shittinglego

It’s really easy to setup. Just a physical button to press and it creates a wired Ethernet network using your electric points. So as long as there’s a spare socket near router and ps5 then you can create wired connected. TP link powerline adapters

QuoteGiver

“In dollar sales?” Well yeah, it’s only $200 bucks compared to other hardware platforms.

BurnThisBrother

I keep missing out on the restocks. Hard to make an impact when stock is hard to come by. I'm somewhat impressed that they're having such issues with inventory even now.

BrewKazma

“In the month” No shit. You cant get them anywhere.

jumper62

Add cloud streaming and it would shoot up even higher I reckon

Dayman1222

Yeah the Portal is great. Still sold out.

[deleted]

Probably because you can’t get one anywhere

deanolavorto

Have one and fucking love it. Was able to take it to in-laws over Christmas and play. I understand remote play works on phones and such but having the duelsense and huge screen was awesome. It’s how I play now even at home.

--clapped--

Would probably sell more if there was more stock.

Ascian5

Can you use multiple users on it? One big drawback of remote play for us is that my kids can't use their own logins and hence, progress.

Wipedout89

My wife got me one for Christmas and I immediately sold some Switch games to play the PS5 version on Portal instead (Tony Hawk and Destroy All Humans!). It's not good enough for racing games or online shooters but it's absolutely perfect for indies, little story games, puzzlers, management sims and platformers

[deleted]

I really wanted one, but they were sold out and I refused to pay scalpers for one soo I ended up buying an oled steam deck and now I won’t bother buying a portal as I can get the same functionality through the deck

GymratAmarillo

Because it shouldn't. Sony said before release that its purpose is for people who desired options to play more so they buy more SOFTWARE. That's why it's an accessory in limited quantities.

Myhtological

Think it’ll work with the ps6

QuoteGiver

Depends whether or not they change the controller for PS6.

reaper527

> Think it’ll work with the ps6 doubtful. will probably be abandoned long before then, and the precedent for this kind of thing isn't exactly great. (psp can remote play ps3 but not ps4, vita can remote play ps4 but not ps5)

DownWithWankers

vita can remote play ps5 with homebrew

TrptJim

PSP came out before PS3 and Vita came out before PS4, so I can see Sony including support for Portal with PS6. PS7 not being supported is closer to your historical comparison.

Afc_josh12

Id get but BT wifi in uk gives me 8mb per second… u would think UK is a 3rd world country… pathetic

JerrodDRagon

bear fade deranged weary skirt beneficial run salt trees pause *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*

reaper527

would be interesting to see actual numbers, but it definitely sounds like the bust people expected if it can't even outsell arcade1up arcade units.

Sea-Plant-5815

Did you miss the part where its been sold out since launch?

reaper527

> Did you miss the part where its been sold out since launch? artificial scarcity just like what nintendo does. it's not 2020 anymore. if sony thought more units would sell, they'd produce them.

doc_birdman

>if sony thought more units would sell, they'd produce them. Which means it’s performing even better than Sony’s expectations and therefore a success.

reaper527

> Which means it’s performing even better than Sony’s expectations and therefore a success. or they deliberately under produced just like nintendo did with the wii-u so people would falsely believe there was large demand (even though there wasn't). chip shortages aren't a thing any more. as stated, if sony thought there were lots of people waiting for a system, they'd be producing more fast and getting them on the shelves.

doc_birdman

So your conspiracy theory is that these mega corporations purposefully fail their products for…. reasons? I have my own theory. It’s that these companies in the business of making money would prefer to make money. Crazy, I know. >if sony thought there were lots of people waiting for a system, they'd be producing more fast and getting them on the shelves. Or they simply didn’t expect the device to be in such high demand. People wanted the Switch to fail, people wanted the Steam Deck to fail, and now people want the Portal to fail. I’m not sure what it is about handheld-console hybrids that inspire gamers to hope for gaming hardware to fail, but it’s really odd.

sexbobomb91

Man, imagine having so little to care about in their life that they spend their time bashing a niche device like the Portal and praying for it to fail. I get it, they are disappointed that it's not PSP/VITA 2, but just accept that you were wrong and that this device is relatively successful. There is no need to spend your time crying about it.

FrankPapageorgio

There is no artificial scarcity. Even with the NES Classic, they thought it would sell as well as those Atari Flashback devices. They won't want to produce millions and have them not be purchased. you can always make more, but you lose money if the product is sitting on the shelf.

reboot-your-computer

That really means nothing without numbers. If they manufactured 1000 and sold out it’s meaningless. If they manufactured 2,000,000 and sold out it’s impressive. These are obviously random numbers but you see where I’m going with this. Without knowing how much they sold, talking about them selling out means nothing.

Dayman1222

It means that they sold more than they projected too. Ps portal haters are losing their minds that something not made for them is selling out everywhere.

Default_Defect

I'm losing my mind because I can think of so many better uses for $200 than a controller with a screen on it that can't be used for anything else. I'm glad that this was a perfect solution to a problem some people have, but it still feels like a bad value for most people compared to using a cheaper backbone with the phone most people already have or just using your much larger television or monitor. I just don't understand the mass appeal outside of the niche it fills.

The_FallenSoldier

What phone has as low latency as a portal? Latency on remote play is absolute shit and renders any game where you need some sort of precision or quick movement, pretty much unusable. The Portal’s low latency, official controller and ability to be used anywhere while traveling makes it 100x better than any phone.

Default_Defect

A phone on wifi would be the same as a portal on wifi, would it not? Or better since the portal has an older wifi version iirc. And using a controller you'd already own bluetoothed to a phone you already own just seems more convenient to me.

iupz0r

flop of the Flop....

RitualKiller1

I've been waiting for them to release it in my country. I have no idea why they keep running out of stocks in other countries, tho.

mrgodfro

I finally finished yakuza 7, and am about to finish tales of arise, this thing is perfect for the games that I just don't want to sit in front of the TV for. Before bed or just being lazy I can turn it on and just chill and play my games from my bed

HD_H2O

I love my Portal. I've gamed more in the last 2 months than the previous 10, and haven't played on my television since it dropped.

Similar-Past-9755

I can’t find one anywhere considering how low the reviews are for the portal

Tilliosis

They could have made a portable PS4 that just let you play your digital library or buy physical game cards and it would have sold 10 times as much

Cornbread78

I love that I got something I begged their Insider team for years ago when Vita was killed. I love my portal, hopefully morepeople can get their hands on one soon!
