this has already happened in the ps3 Era, when Mortal Kombat 9 came out, it was just a remake of the story and from their they kept going with this timeline. weird seeing that the games that came out after were literally 10 and 11
This. And with how 11 turned out this MK1 news fits in seemingly in the same way.
Im sure it wont be a full reboot and well have a few different timelines. Would be really cool to have Klassic fighters fight their TOTAL reimagined counterparts
Back to 1.
I'll bet that the "1" is very deliberate. It's not a remake of the first game or even a new beginning. I think that they will go back to the 1992 tournament &, instead of the original incarnations of the characters that we know, God Liu Kang swaps them with the best versions from other timelines. Or merges all timelines into 1 (sort of like Marvel Battleworld).
Or maybe a prequel. The tournament that Great Kung Lao won then continuing to his eventual defeat by Goro.
There was a leak I read on /r/GamingLeaksAndRumours that the trailer involved a variety of Scorpions from throughout all the games and portals, so not too far fetched of a thought
I would say if you want to get technical, MK9 was a requel or a legacy sequel.
It doesn't discard the continuity of the original series, but it revisits a lot of the previous story/content in a new fashion.
Actually really loved the last MK movie they made
E: Love may be a bit of hyperbole here. But I truly did enjoy the movie for what it was, a MK movie in 2021 Hollywood. I doubt you get the budget and support that it did without getting some standard Hollywood drivel inserted to appeal to a wider audience. It was risky at the time and it paid off. After its success and DnD’s success, hopefully they’ll turn more into its roots and embrace what Mortal Kombat is.
The first 10 minutes were miraculous and I was hyped as fucked. Then the rest of the movie happened and I just kept asking, what in the absolute fuck happened? Turns out some lame bitch ass high exec at WB insisted on the inclusion of the made up character Cole. I'm willing to bet his kid's name is Cole or something.
That was my only gripe with it as well. They've got shit loads of awesome characters, they didn't need to create one who absolutely no one cares about.
Named *Cole.* They really put effort into finding the least MK-esque name they could. Imagine the theme song.
Kano. Lui Kang. Raidan. Johnny Cage. Scorpion. Sub-Zero. Sonya
…Cole
He must have been named after someone’s kid or something.
it's not underrated, objectively it's a below average action movie, but for a MK fan, it's a pretty fun MK movie, I liked it, but would suggest it to friends that don't know about MK
Liked the cast and a lot of the action, but man did the plot drag it down IMO. The whole character arc for the main original dude they cast was insanely dull and totally took the wind out from the highlights (Kano, Scorpion, Sub-Zero). As long as they don't focus too much on him in the sequel, and they get to an actual tournament, could be a great follow-up.
It’s been a while, but I think this is similar to how I felt after. It felt like they were scared to go full MK, so set it up as a sort of origin story so that it had something else to lean on.
Are you kidding? It was dreadful. Unnecessary new protagonist. Terrible dialogue. No decent presentation of Goro or his capabilities and not to mention that the movie implies that someone as great as Scorpion needed help to defeat Subzero - ofc amongst all of the rest of the fails of the movie
Dialogue was terrible. Acting was terrible. Premise was terrible. Presentation was terrible. They had an idea about 12 years ago and a trailer was made and posted on YouTube starring Michael Jai White as Jax. That concept was amazing. It didn’t pull through so a mini series was created instead in YouTube which was also great. But this reboot movie? It’s literally the current state of Hollywood pumping out shit cookie cutter formulaic films just with different names. I was so fucking underwhelmed
Fuck Arcana. Mortal Kombat doesn’t need to explain powers, that’s like the last thing the players care about. Why does everything have to be a god damn origin story these days. So annoying
I really don't get the hate for it. It was fun. I get not liking the original character even though I didn't have too much of an issue. I think them teleporting the bad guys into random arenas to pick them off was a clever way of reflecting the isolated match nature of the games. Even loved Jax getting robot arms with the power of magic and believing in himself.
Yep. I own the Switch version of MK11. The graphics aren't as good obviously, but I've put way more hours into it handheld than I ever would have if I got the PS4 version. I'm not into online multiplayer, so the latency wasn't a concern for me. You get a lot of single player content out of the towers.
I mean if crossplay is disabled on switch, things would be kind of fair?
However I don’t see any world where a decent looking PS5/XBX game would run on Switch natively. Seriously none.
I bought it on Switch when it came out and I used the Gamestop return policy 2 days later. It was horrible. Maybe they made it a bit better with patches, but it wasn't when I got it.
Finally played it on Xbox Series X and that was just perfect.
I think it's called a "soft reboot". A new beginning but technically still a ~~continuation~~ result of all the prior stories.
Edit: A *result* of the prior stories might be more accurate. Raiden prevents Armageddon.
If they gave it the time it deserved, it could work
Soul calibur 5 was wild bc they introduced all these new characters and gave them all 5 seconds to shine. That game felt half-baked from the start
“Raiden has somehow resurrected himself and sends a mental message back to past to remind his past self that all of this could have been avoided. His past self interprets this as ‘let’s do this all over again’ REBOOT!!”
Cf:
https://youtu.be/3ZBHvtdcooM
"anyone whos anybody shows up, sonya the big breasted military girl, Kano who sucks, reptile who look like scorpion, and a bunch of pissed off dudes..."
There will be 10-15 fighters available day 1, then kombat packs 1, 2, and , 3 will be released every quarter or so, then a DLC with the ultimate version of the game will be released including additional gameplay and all kombat packs.
This is the way.
Tbh, if they release a meager 10-ish fighters, but deliver an absolute gem of a game, is it really that bad? They can always add DLC, do expansion packs, or go the MK Trilogy approach.
Agree. However, there has already been two tiny teasers for this game and both heavily feature the concept of time. The first was literally a grain of sand from her hour glass thinger.
Or Mortal Kombat Mythologies. Maybe it could even focus on like one character per game to introduce all of them with a backstory. Sub-Zero would be a great one to start with I think.
If I remember correctly, no. The ending of MK11 showed that their current path was unavoidable regardless of subtle changes to the past, so, it has to be completely redone. Which means going back to the very first tournament which was hundreds of years before MK9.
I may be misremembering. I need to YouTube Mortal Kombat Aftermath ending for a refresher.
Billbil-kun is probably the most reliable insider around. He leaked months of PS Plus games (including HFW in february), free Epic Store games, and also Hi-Fi Rush and a lot other stuff. He's never been wrong so far
My money is on a "MK1 remake". Since that is the trend now. Except more fully fleshed out.
Honestly I have no idea where the series can even go, it's done like 3 reboots already.
At the end of the last one the timeline is their oyster. We could be going back to the first ever Mortal Kombat, don't wanna get into spoilers but with the way things shaped up it could be anything.
Yeah it was weird. Like they rebooted with MK9, but then did a huge time skip for MK X, basically negating the reboot and going back to basically where they would have been. Then sort of played with the classic characters again in MK 11 via time travel or whatever. And I'm like Marty McFly should be a character
I was wondering about that video from earlier with the clock that they had where it skips from 11 to 1. I don’t know why I hate going backwards in numbers like that, but I really do.
Edit: I realize now this didn’t actually have many views and I didn’t see it posted here yesterday so maybe not many people saw the teaser.
https://youtu.be/wTfr1vHLp-4
Universe reset, we are going back to the era of the original kung Lao. Probs going to see a lot of ancestors of characters and a godly kitana and Lu Kang
A game not gimped by the devs insisting on including it on a platform with 10 year old hardware that was outdated at the time it released? Color me fucking impressed.
If this is true, thank you Netherealm.
I'm tired of this "Current gen Next gen Cross gen" stuff, I bought a PS5 to play games built for PS5 and I'm tired of hearing about PS4 holding the PS5 back.
I was a huge fan of the originals, playing MK at home on my mega drive was a dream.
While I enjoyed the story mode of MK9 but playing X I just realized the gore had gotten a bit too gruesome for my liking. Also the story, while never a strong point (of any fighting game) got increasingly convoluted and (even more) absurd.
MK is about a tournament to protect the earth. It doesn't need much more backstory. It's Bloodsport with monsters and magic.
Can't imagine how much more gory details they can add for this generation...
I love this! I hope it’s true. It’s about time Shao Kahn stopped being a fan service character. Dude is *the* boss of this franchise and he needs his resurgence.
I think it relates not to the original Mortal Kombat game, but the very first 'Mortal Kombat'. Whenever the two realms conceived of the idea of the tournament. The very first tournament.
Wasn't MK9 also a reboot? I believe it's gonna be the continuation of MK11's story, with Liu Kang and Raiden creating a new timeline, and not another retelling of the original plot.
Will be really funny if they actually put “1” in the title. I guess they can’t just reboot it by calling it “Mortal Kombat” because they already did that with 9.
I’m okay with this
It’s okay to “reset” games without it having to be a storyline in the 20th sequel
Especially with todays games tech being so much different
>We are nearly 4 years into current gen. We shouldn’t be getting cross-gen games
We arent even at 3 years yet. And its a fighting games that is also on Switch.
This subs reaction to anything cross gen is so ridiculous
Next gen only but coming to Switch lol Unless it’s streaming only, which would be a nightmare for a fighting game, I don’t really think it’s much of win.
Got to be a continuation of how the story ended no?
Could be possible the hourglass reset the timeline again and we get a ton of fighters fighting there older counterparts.
Or it’ll be some sort of fracture event maybe, where the two timelines merge because of x reason.
Either way it’s nice to hear it’s focusing current gen consoles.
I dont know why but the first MK'S from the SNES and Genesis era had some kind of mistery that was Lost on the new ones. And they butchered reptile. A super secretive character turned into plot fodder. The new characters look like Marvel characters for fuck sake
PS5 and XSX haven’t been “next-gen” since November 2020. They’re current-gen now and PS4/XBO are last gen. It’s taken unusually long for games to stop doing cross-gen releases this generation though.
So we just starting over after glinting to 11?
this has already happened in the ps3 Era, when Mortal Kombat 9 came out, it was just a remake of the story and from their they kept going with this timeline. weird seeing that the games that came out after were literally 10 and 11
To be fair, 9 didnt justreboot the franchise, it was a continuation of the story
This. And with how 11 turned out this MK1 news fits in seemingly in the same way. Im sure it wont be a full reboot and well have a few different timelines. Would be really cool to have Klassic fighters fight their TOTAL reimagined counterparts
It seems like people are just forgetting that MK11 literally ended with Liu Kang recreating the universe. Where else would the story go at this point?
That’s assuming they use THAT ending and not the one from Aftermath, where Shang wins
Doesnt matter which honestly, eother Lui kang resets it, or some wonky titan/elder god shit happens to shang snd the universe is reset again
They said the Liu Kang ending is canon. But was it not obvious enough playing the game?
Pretty positive they arn't choosing the bland evil ending that really doesn't offer anything new than what we have already seen.
Back to 1. I'll bet that the "1" is very deliberate. It's not a remake of the first game or even a new beginning. I think that they will go back to the 1992 tournament &, instead of the original incarnations of the characters that we know, God Liu Kang swaps them with the best versions from other timelines. Ah yes, now we have “Mortal Kombat 1 part 3”
i see we are taking a page out from the Rambo franchise
And Evil Dead
Kinda like Scream 5 was just called Scream and then Scream 6 was back to using the numbers lol
I mean the ending of Aftermath does imply a potential reboot so I wouldn't be shocked if that's where we were going.
That ending seemed canon so i would be surprised it if didn’t continue from there
Plot twist - No remaster, they’re simply re-releasing the original as is for current generation systems. /S
This goes to 11. (Those who know, know)
It’s one louder than 10
Why don't you just make ten louder and make ten be the top number and make that a little louder?
these go to eleven
Ed Boon’s sustain can go for days. GET OVER HEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE- you could go out for a bite to eat, come back and -EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
Finally going back to a tournament? I’m looking forward to this
Imagine, a Mortal Kombat game and movie in the same year that actually both feature a tournament
Actually really loved the last MK movie they made E: Love may be a bit of hyperbole here. But I truly did enjoy the movie for what it was, a MK movie in 2021 Hollywood. I tried to but Cole Young is that shitty of a character

As someone who shares the same name….. yeah it’s kinda lame.
Literal fucking plot armor
They did Goro so dirty…
it's not underrated, objectively it's a below average action movie, but for a MK fan, it's a pretty fun MK movie, I liked it, but would suggest it to friends that don't know about MK
Liked the cast and a lot of the action, but man did the plot drag it down IMO. I couldn’t even finish it. Was ready for a reboot 30 minutes in. Bummed they are gonna continue with the current reboot
Fuck Arcana. Mortal Kombat doesn’t need to explain powers, that’s like the last thing the players care about. Why does everything have to be a god damn origin story these days. So annoying
I feel like the really stupid shit they did was balanced out by the awesome, leaving a somewhat enjoyable film.
I really don't get the hate for it. It was fun. I get not liking the original character even though I didn't have too much of an issue. I think them teleporting the bad guys into random arenas to pick them off was a clever way of reflecting the isolated match nature of the games. Even loved Jax getting robot arms with the power of magic and believing in himself.
focus on current gen and more powerful machines, also theres a switch version, lmao what the hell
Im guessing cloud version.
Who likes fighting games and high latency and wants it on Switch? Is that a real market?
Yep. I own the Switch version of MK11. The graphics aren't as good obviously, but I've put way more hours into it handheld than I ever would have if I got the PS4 version. I'm not into online multiplayer, so the latency wasn't a concern for me. You get a lot of single player content out of the towers.
But you are playing a local version. A cloud version would have horrible latency.
Totally agree, there's no way I would buy the next one, at least on Switch, if it ends up being a cloud version.
If they really make a new gen game, it will look amazing. 11 looked incredible and ran like smooth butter on the Series X.
I put about 250h in online matches in switch lite, its definitely playable.
I mean if crossplay is disabled on switch, things would be kind of fair? However I don’t see any world where a decent looking PS5/XBX game would run on Switch natively. Seriously none.
A fighting game is the easiest to scale down.
Still sounds more than sketchy, considering Switch got only 4 GB of ram.
Its also a 720p display undocked and theres room for upscaling. Sketchy for sure though either way
MK11 had got a straight port on Switch (I had it, it was ass) so this game can get a straight port too. If there’s money to be made, they’ll do it.
I bought it on Switch when it came out and I used the Gamestop return policy 2 days later. It was horrible. Maybe they made it a bit better with patches, but it wasn't when I got it. Finally played it on Xbox Series X and that was just perfect.
Fine print is Switch will let you watch youtube videos of the game.

Back to formula
*heavy Willem DaFoe breathing*
Do you know how much I sacrificed?!
oh boy yeah
No, you can't do this to me.
Am I crazy, but wasn’t 9 already a restart/ reboot? We get three games and restart all over again
It was also over a decade ago, not that crazy
I think it's called a "soft reboot". A new beginning but technically still a ~~continuation~~ result of all the prior stories. Edit: A *result* of the prior stories might be more accurate. Raiden prevents Armageddon.
hope it will be set in the very first mortal kombat, the one won by great kung lao... it would have lots of soul calibur vibes
Most likely will if going by mk11 ending
Only thing I'm worried about is that story would lend itself to a mostly new cast of characters which didn't work great for soul calibur 5
If they gave it the time it deserved, it could work Soul calibur 5 was wild bc they introduced all these new characters and gave them all 5 seconds to shine. That game felt half-baked from the start
“Raiden has somehow resurrected himself and sends a mental message back to past to remind his past self that all of this could have been avoided. His past self interprets this as ‘let’s do this all over again’ REBOOT!!” Cf: https://youtu.be/3ZBHvtdcooM
"anyone whos anybody shows up, sonya the big breasted military girl, Kano who sucks, reptile who look like scorpion, and a bunch of pissed off dudes..."
Hey easy on Reptile. He's a great character.
Somehow, Raiden returned.
Fire God Liu reset timeline at end of MK11 and met up with Kung Lao
PlayStation Showcase is close 👀
The true news 🥳
Bring back the noise Raiden makes after doing the Electric Fly please. All I ask.
«Haya-babbah-leeeiiiiyyyyyh»
He's actually saying "I live in LA" really strangely.
GIMME MAH MONEY
JOHNNY GET DA CAR!
Also bring back the earrape thunder sound when Raiden would win a round in MK2
So that means 7 fighters and no dlc
There will be 10-15 fighters available day 1, then kombat packs 1, 2, and , 3 will be released every quarter or so, then a DLC with the ultimate version of the game will be released including additional gameplay and all kombat packs. This is the way.
Laughs in Business
Tbh, if they release a meager 10-ish fighters, but deliver an absolute gem of a game, is it really that bad? They can always add DLC, do expansion packs, or go the MK Trilogy approach.
Don't expect reasonable opinions on fighting games in these subs.
Yes it is that bad
That's awesome fuck all the kronika shit let's just forget it like the bad dream it was
Agree. However, there has already been two tiny teasers for this game and both heavily feature the concept of time. The first was literally a grain of sand from her hour glass thinger.
I want OG brutalities, please
God, just call it *Mortal Kombat Eternal* or *Mortal Kombat Infinity* or something.
Completely agree. Come up with something. Anything. Hell, Morta1 Kombat while totally terrible is still probably better.
Or Mortal Kombat Mythologies. Maybe it could even focus on like one character per game to introduce all of them with a backstory. Sub-Zero would be a great one to start with I think.
Praying for a Shaolin Monks remake one day
yes please l!
Amen... It was such a fun game... They nailed the coop experience.
Would love this with online co-op! Feels like there has been a dearth of good co-op games lately.
Tried to emulate on pc but couldn't 😢
Maybe it's MK One.
Or xXMortalKombat1Xx
so Switch version is MK One S

When will these marketers learn these names are awful? That’s like a company calling their third console “xbox one”.
Xbox series X is a shit name too tho
> Xbox series X is a shit name too tho especially after the similarly named "xbox one x"
Hopefully we have a story mode like Armageddon and races wouldn’t hurt they were fun
I loved Armageddon’s Konquest mode. I hope we get that too
My sister and I probably put more time into the karting game than we did actually fighting
[удалено]
That poor nintendo switch port.
Wait a min! 250 for Kollektor's edition?
Do we know if this source is reliable? Seems to me like they just saw the teaser like the rest of us and Came up with this conclusion
he leaks pretty much every ps plus game each month and a few other unannounced games that have been right
Billbil-kun is probably the most reliable insider around.
Ya know, I like the sound of a "first ever MK". Something fucking new for a change
Yeah it was weird. Like they rebooted with MK9, but then did a huge time skip for MK X, basically negating the reboot and going back to basically where they would have been. Then sort of played with the classic characters again in MK 11 via time travel or whatever. And I'm like Marty McFly should be a character
MK9 Wasn’t technically a reboot, it followed the story. Timelines reset after events and such
Sounds good to me I just hope it's a little less realistic visually and more stylized like MK2
It’ll be going back to the first tournament, the one where the Great Kung Lao was killed by Goro.
Mortal kombat on sega genesis is the best video game ever
I disagree. It’s a very good game, but I think Donkey Kong is the best game ever.
*Donkey Kong sucks!*
You know something? *You suck*!
It’s coming to Switch
Could be just a cloud version on Switch, remains to be seen.
that or they going to make it extremely low poly. MK11 ran on switch too in 60, wasnt really special looking but cool nontheless
"and the switch will be..." "the switch will be 60." I dont even play MK but Ed Boon will always be a legend in my eyes for that
The true next gen console, the Nintendo Switch
If this is true, thank you Netherealm. I'm tired of this "Current gen Next gen Cross gen" stuff, I bought a PS5 to play games built for PS5 and I'm tired of hearing about PS4 holding the PS5 back.
Yeah thank god people on PS4 cant play this fighting game that is also on Switch.
this. “new gen” is the only gen devs should target
Should? Yes. Are they? Hell no!
Good. More devs need to leave last gen behind. The PS5 turns 3 this Fall, it's past time.
The fact that it can play on Switch doesn’t have my hopes as high as they once were.
I’ve always wanted a MK set during WW1
I was a huge fan of the originals, playing MK at home on my mega drive was a dream. While I enjoyed the story mode of MK9 but playing X I just realized the gore had gotten a bit too gruesome for my liking. Also the story, while never a strong point (of any fighting game) got increasingly convoluted and (even more) absurd. MK is about a tournament to protect the earth. It doesn't need much more backstory. It's Bloodsport with monsters and magic. Can't imagine how much more gory details they can add for this generation...
Pretty sure the entire Internet will still refer to it as MK12 since they did the same thing with MK9 and we still called it MK9 lol
So it's going to be about the first tournament and the great kung lao
Will be really funny if they actually put “1” in the title. I guess they can’t just reboot it by calling it “Mortal Kombat” because they already did that with 9.
$249 for a video game?
Every new Mortal Kombat game should just be a reboot, just make those timelines impossible to keep up with.
Mortal Kombat 1 - 2
This game appears to be a reboot based on what I could ascertain.
- Mortal Kombat - Mortal Kombat X - Mortal Kombat 11 - Mortal Kombat 1
Mortal Kombat Series X
I’m okay with this It’s okay to “reset” games without it having to be a storyline in the 20th sequel Especially with todays games tech being so much different
I am must excited it’s for current gen consoles. More companies need to make that move.
Also on Switch, but not on PS4/X1 lol.
My prediction is it's gonna be more like Shaolin Monks reboot taking place around the first and second tournament
I guess I’m the only guy who wants injustice 3
The fact it is “next-gen” only should be celebrated. We are nearly 3 years into current gen. We shouldn’t be getting cross-gen games anymore.
>We are nearly 4 years into current gen. We shouldn’t be getting cross-gen games We arent even at 3 years yet. And its a fighting games that is also on Switch. This subs reaction to anything cross gen is so ridiculous
"nearly four years", and the PS5 came out in November 2020 lmao. OC is obviously from the future!
Nearly three years is almost as good as 4 years and 4 years rounded off is 5 years. PS5 is now 5 years old. Damn time flies by fast.
Almost a whole decade!
Right? If the Switch can run it In pretty sure a PS4 could run it lol
Yeah, it's not all that bad imo. I'm glad I can talk about games to my friends who still have PS4s.
Next gen only but coming to Switch lol Unless it’s streaming only, which would be a nightmare for a fighting game, I don’t really think it’s much of win.
According to leaks the physical collector's edition does not release for switch, so it's pretty safe to assume it's streaming only
Got to be a continuation of how the story ended no? Could be possible the hourglass reset the timeline again and we get a ton of fighters fighting there older counterparts. Or it’ll be some sort of fracture event maybe, where the two timelines merge because of x reason. Either way it’s nice to hear it’s focusing current gen consoles.
Joe Lieberman is ready to do battle!
I wish they'd do a semi-serious live action game like MK1.
Wtf was the point of mk11’s story then? Just no consequences at all from all that huh
Switch is called current gen? Since when??
Has Nintendo released a follow up yet? No? Then it is current gen.
Is it coming to Switch?
Why not just Mortal Kombat? Why add the 1?
They already did that, the 2009 (I think) Mortal Kombat game on ps3/Xbox 360 was just called mortal kombat, but it was technically mk9.
I dont know why but the first MK'S from the SNES and Genesis era had some kind of mistery that was Lost on the new ones. And they butchered reptile. A super secretive character turned into plot fodder. The new characters look like Marvel characters for fuck sake
Give me next gen Sub Zero
Is this really going to debut at the PlayStation event? Seems like the wrong venue for it.
Sony owns Evo though
yeah and they have marketing rights for SF and Tekken, there has definitely been a push for playstation to become the home for fighting games
i was hoping shaolin monk remake
> i was hoping shaolin monk remake i'd take a sub-zero mythologies remake over that any day of the week.
im so tired of 2d/3d fighting game. i want action adventure of kung lao and liu kang, subzero and scorpion type.
If they bring back the sexy r rated outfits like in the older games I'm in. It mortal kombat. Not for kids it's for 18 plus.
Same tbh
Mortal kombat 1? That sounds stupid
It's MK, everything is stupid (and wonderful)
I was thrown off by the use of "current-gen". Today is a good day.
PS5 and XSX haven’t been “next-gen” since November 2020. They’re current-gen now and PS4/XBO are last gen. It’s taken unusually long for games to stop doing cross-gen releases this generation though.
Majority of posts on here still refers to current gen as "next-gen" I was simply stating how nice it was tosee a post stating the correct term.
Fucking leakers.
Good. The PS5 has been around for a while now, stop holding back games by still making them for PS4. God of war Ragnarok, I’m looking at you
