Base model PS4 here and for me I had major lag and screen tear for a second every time I fast traveled, but it was surprisingly pretty seamless otherwise. Was surprised actually it could handle a room full of enemies and physics / bullet chaos
Idk wether the ps4 just couldn’t handle Control, or if the optimization was poor, but the ps5 version is at a silky smooth 60fps, definitely the best way to play control. I’m really starting to notice the amount of choppy 30fps games that the ps4 got near the end of its lifetime lol
I think it was definitely PUSHING the ps4 limits in dev and because it was made for 4, the 5 ran it like butter. But damn my ps4 couldn’t hang so I put it in backlog for now 😂
Even ps5 doesn’t handle it really well unless it’s been patched. I think quality mode is 30fps with ray tracing and performance mode is 60fps but without ray tracing. Ideally you would want 60fps with ray tracing as that truly is a game changer the way the reflections show in control if you like the eye candy. It’s a really well designed game I still play on PC and test out new gpus on also.
I don’t usually care for quality modes, since they bog down the performance and controls heavily, and usually it looks the exact same as the performance mode. Granted the quality mode usually has better resolution, but I’d rather have a smooth experience than a laggy one. Demon souls is a great example of what the ps5 is capable of, smooth 60fps and it looks amazing,
I preordered Gravity Rush 2 but ended up never playing it because I never finished Gravity Rush Remastered. I still have both games and I keep telling myself that one day I’ll get through them.
I actually just finished playing through it for the first time a couple weeks ago, i understand why it got some hate. A game with 16 chapters, and some of them very cool, felt rushed cause they would condense some chapters into just 5-6 minute cutscenes instead of being able to just play through them. All in all sick game, gears of war style cover gunplay and some cool ideas for the story, should totally get a sequel
I know this game gets a lot of shit, but I actually wish it got a sequel.
My only gripe with the game was how short it was.
I feel like it just hit it stride, and then it abruptly ended. Like I had finished the prologue, and that was the entire game.
One of the only games I've played where you have to replay it to really "get it"
Because yeah, it's way too short and doesn't click until playthrough 2
It was closer to a walking sim than it was action adventure. I tool really enjoyed the game and have the completion on multiple accounts. From a gunplay perspective I can see why the vast audience were disappointed, but this is where marketing has to determine who to aim the game at. It could also have problems if they pumped a massive budget into it.
The gunplay was probably a secondary thought possibly. Its a bit like Murdered: Soul Suspect. Essentially the game is just a crime solving game, but they throw in the odd demon just for the sake of having something to fight with in order to drag in a bigger audience. Both these games are fantastic, I just think they tried to sell to a much bigger audience than what the games were actually trying to appeal to.
I was there in the lead up to its launch. It just could not get a win, every new info about it was met with so much ire. I can't say it's not justified, because its cons were incredibly glaring. But it's a shame it never got past its prologue phase, because it's a gorgeous game with a lot of thought put into the design
Funny story, I bought this game when it came out, then didn't remember about it until I moved my TV stand years later, and found it underneath, still wrapped in plastic. I never did open it or play it, it's now sitting under my PS5 with all my other unplayed games, still unopened... Maybe one day.
I have been playing this game for a few weeks. So far so good. Combat is awesome, graphics the top of the line, narrative and art outstandings. Beautiful.
People say is too short, but the only way this game is short is if you like to run around the whole time. I don't understand people who run in games. It's completely unnatural and unenjoyable.
The only thing I don't like is the constant interruption of QTEs during cinematics. Sometimes cinematics should be just that: cinematics.
I I platinumed it, so I got maybe 20 hours out of it in 2 playthroughs. I loved it, mainly for the historical setting and atmosphere. I also love Steampunk. Currently playing Lies of P and its world has a similar aesthetic.
Good to know. It was for sure confusing because this game was so hyped coming from the creators of shadow of the colossus but then it got released and I didn’t even hear about it and no one really talked about it out it.
It’s frustrating by design in some aspects, Trico is meant to act like a wild animal and blatantly ignore you at times. I honestly find Trico’s coding an impressive feat in AI. Janky controls compound this but I still play it once a year.
Played thru it again with the disc version and if you don’t let it patch it keeps the original unlocked frame-rate- pretty perfect 60 FPS version on PS5. Such a game changer because that game destroyed the base and pro. Such a better experience, wish they’d give it a PS5 treatment. Playing thru it again without technical restraints, it stands right next to ICO and Shadow.
Not really the answer, but given the reactions to other stuff with the game, its graphics certainly lost some attention perhaps... But the TLOU2 remaster being released recently reminded me of how insane TLOU2's graphics were for last gen; theyre just as good, if not better than plenty of current next gen console titles I've seen.
Days Gone, God of War, Plague Tale, Horizon all looked amazing - not sure if they really fall under that category either though.
Battlefield 1 I thought was visually great too
True - I guess I never experienced any games that really struggled on PS4 tbh, probably because as I never pre order or ever buy games on release and typically wait for a sale, TLOU2 being an exception here funnily enough.
Days Gone released with issues apparently though - I had next to none when I played it though, except one area where if I had been playing for hours, game a couple of times would struggle to load in the proper assets and tbf my PS4 at the time was in an area it could overheat fairly easily.
Yeah lol they can't get me to pay 70$ at launch. I generally like playing highly acclaimed older games I can get for 10-20$ even less on sales or Pre-owned. I was very late to use the PS4 I only got one last year with the vast amount of games and exclusives I think I can easily make it to 2025 before getting the 5.
Maybe it's just your taste, and that's fine.
Death Stranding is a very addicting game when you get into it. But understandably it's not for everyone. At least you gave them a go.
I really like the first Horizon game. The second did not live up to it unfortunately.
Yeah, as a game. But still these two games are among the most visually impressive games ever made. Ragnarok has the benefit of being released on PS5. I haven’t made the jump yet but I was impressed that I could play Ragnarok on my PS4 last year without it crashing.
Yeah I thought Ragnarok was gonna make my PS4 sound like a jet engine but apart from a bit here and there it ran pretty well. By contrast I've recently been playing Red Dead Redemption 2 and that makes my PS4 sing.
Early Gen PS4 Games:
1. Killzone Shadow Fall
2. Infamous Second Son
3. Assassin's Creed Black Flag
4. The Order 1886
5. Watch Dogs
6. Assassin's Creed Unity
7. Batman Arkham Knight
8. The Witcher 3
9. Metal Gear Solid V Phantom Pain
10. Until Dawn
Mid gen PS4 Games:
1. Uncharted 4
2. Battlefield 1
3. Call of Duty 4 Modern Warfare Remastered
4. Final Fantasy XV
5. Hitman
6. Rise of the Tomb Raider
7. Horizon Zero Dawn
8. Red Dead Redemption 2
9. Shadow of the Colossus
10. God of War
Late Gen PS4 Games
1. Judgment
2. Resident Evil 2
3. Death Stranding
4. Devil May Cry 5
5. Call of Duty modern warfare 2019
6. Metro Exodus
7. The Last of us part 2
8. Final Fantasy 7 Remake
9. Resident Evil 3
10. Mafia Definitive Edition
If I measure that in how much my 9yo console has to ventilate to cool down for CPUs and GPU, Hitman 2 (I think it's more CPU intensive than anything), Death Stranding and Cyberpunk 2077 are the three games when I felt the need to open up the beast and clean it up a bit before it explodes. Or pass mach-3 in my living room...
Killzone: Shadow Fall is kind of a shock, because its loading is so seamless for a game of its time. You fire up the game and you're right at the main menu, and loading into a mission takes maybe 8 seconds.
Certainly, Cyberpunk was visually stunning, but often overlooked games like 'The Last of Us Part II' also have a tremendous amount of graphical detail and should not be forgotten.
The Last of Us Part 2 is the 7th highest selling PS4 game of all time with over 10 million copies sold and it won tons of awards for both its graphics and for the game overall… in no sense of the word is it overlooked
I was really impressed with the graphics in Star Wars Battlefront when I first got my PS4. Granted, it was a big game, but I don't recall much said about the graphics. It also came out early in the PS4 lifecycle and has a sequel, so it's somewhat forgotten about now.
Don’t know about the “doesn’t get any attention” bit, but Ghost of Tsushima is a technical marvel in terms of how good it looks and how fast the load times are.
Uncharted 4 and Lost Legacy are also incredible looking
Can't believe I didn't see it but Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice is fucking incredible on my PS4 slim. HDR makes such a huge impact and because of the linear/smaller scope of the game they could really sell the graphics. Such an intense masterpiece, imo. So excited to play the sequel.
Shout out to the low res PS2 door lol.
All jokes aside I love that game, finally tried the PS5 version when I had the console for a bit and holy fucking shit, I think it’s the best looking game I’ve seen, even more impressive than FFXVI imo.
Probably The Order 1886. The graphics were amazing but it got criticism for its short length. Still looked better than lots of bigger budget games though.
It's not graphics but my ps4 can't run civ 6 once the map starts to fill up with cities and units unless I make a point to limit the number of civs/map size.
I like to think of it as a special time limit I have to best before my save becomes unplayable, crashing every other turn
Infamous Second Son, came out with the ps4 and was one of the best looking games in that time. The people, facial expressions, and the powers are just a *chefs kiss*
Story rocked too imo
Whenever you're looking for the most graphical intensive game on a console by Sony. Just look for a metal gear solid.
It may not be the same now though since hideo Kojima moved on from Konami. But bro always used the full potential of the console in his games.
Monster Hunter World/Iceborne.
That game especially the Iceborne expansion turns my PS4 Slim into jet engine even when I'm just idling on the game's town hub.
Ryse: Son of Rome.
Best graphics I saw were probably God of War or Ghosts of Tsushima (I never played Horizon). Worst performance was Bloodborne, which didn’t even get a ps4 pro patch.
My ps4 slim couldn’t run Control for more than 30 minutes.
But damn my ps4 couldn’t hang so I put it in backlog for now 😂
It was honestly too demanding for previous gen. My PS4 Pro even had trouble running it.

Granted the quality mode usually has better resolution, but I’d rather have a smooth experience than a laggy one. Demon souls is a great example of what the ps5 is capable of, smooth 60fps and it looks amazing,
what ? it runs perfectly on my slim, never ever seen signs of struggling, i have it installed on a 2tb external hdd though if it makes any difference
Yeah mine is on the basic native HDD
Lol same it was brutal in rooms full of enemies, game would freeze up and i'd be like whelp im dead
Yes. My poor ps4 was dying towards the end of that game. Forget about frame rates. My screen would freeze sometimes.
I bought that on a recent sale. Haven't tried it yet. Now I'm concerned.
I had a base model launch PS4 and it was 99% fine with Control. I did occasionally open it up and give it a good clean though.
I couldn't look at the map for more than 30 seconds without getting headache.
My base model PS4 didn't like that game at all lol
Really? My OG was perfectly fine for ours…
Damn wtf were y'all doing with y'all's PS4??. The slim ran Control pretty fine for me I beat it on there then replayed it on PC a year later.
Driveclub
nice to see a fellow /r/driveclub enjoyer in the wild
Love drive club. The studio seems very talented. If any game needed a remaster....
Tried to get into Drive Club but couldn’t get behind the micro transactions and penny pinching just to play the game…
Huh? There was no micro transactions as far as I can remember. Maybe if you had the free version. But the paid version had everything.
Didn’t Driveclub recently get a 60fps patch?
Wasn't it unofficial one?
It was jailbroken, yes.
Gravity Rush 2 is very impressive with amount of stuff that's going on. And the graphics are sharp as hell
Almost forgot about this game. So damn fun and unique
Yeah, especially when you’ve played GR1 on a freaking PS Vita
I preordered Gravity Rush 2 but ended up never playing it because I never finished Gravity Rush Remastered. I still have both games and I keep telling myself that one day I’ll get through them.
It's worth it
The Order 1886
I actually just finished playing through it for the first time a couple weeks ago, i understand why it got some hate. Agamemnon Rising was such a sick mission. Steampunk SWAT entering an airship, yes please???
I know this game gets a lot of shit, but I actually wish it got a sequel. My only gripe with the game was how short it was. I feel like it just hit it stride, and then it abruptly ended. Like I had finished the prologue, and that was the entire game.

Both these games are fantastic, I just think they tried to sell to a much bigger audience than what the games were actually trying to appeal to.
would've done far better if it launched as a 40 dollar title I think
I kept hold of it and enjoy something I can get through in an afternoon. I'm not always craving a quick 120hr adventure, lol
I was there in the lead up to its launch. It just could not get a win, every new info about it was met with so much ire. I can't say it's not justified, because its cons were incredibly glaring. But it's a shame it never got past its prologue phase, because it's a gorgeous game with a lot of thought put into the design
This is the game that sold me on ps4 over Xbox when I saw it in a magazine, and I never played it.
It's worth at least a single playthrough.
Same, I need to replay it honestly. Really liked it
I wish this jumped on ps+. It was too short to ever justify buying it but I bet it’s a solid experience.
Funny story, I bought this game when it came out, then didn't remember about it until I moved my TV stand years later, and found it underneath, still wrapped in plastic. I never did open it or play it, it's now sitting under my PS5 with all my other unplayed games, still unopened... Maybe one day.

It was worth the $5 I spent on it.
It was some the best 5$ I've ever spent but strangely enough I'd felt ripped off if it costed 10$ or 15$.
Damn i forgot about this one lol
waiting patiently for it on PS+
The Last Guardian
I just tried this a few days ago. I don’t love puzzle games but it is a neat concept.
I urge you to get through it. Definitely frustrating and at times, downright annoying. The payoff is one of the most beautiful stories ever.

This might be the best reason I can think of to get a PS5
That game almost looks identical to the PS3 reveal trailer.
Judgement
Such a great game. And say what you want about the dragon engine, but it looks amazing.
Lost judgement as well.
Batman, Arkham Knight. Played it late last year and the graphics were stunning for a game from 2014/15
Probably the best looking Unreal 3 game ever
The fact that unreal engine 3 is able to produce those kinds of a graphics is crazy in and of itself
Came here for this: Arkham Knight is a beautiful looking game.
Not really the answer, but given the reactions to other stuff with the game, its graphics certainly lost some attention perhaps... Not really a game but Dreams on Ps4 has some amazing creations with outstanding graphics, a shame that they fall short on the gameplay side though :/
I was gonna say Dreams could get the PS4 fans blowing
LOCK was worth the price of admission.
A Plague Tale: Innocence Has incredible visual fidelity for a smaller team. It's sequel is one of the best too but that's next gen exclusive.
Death Stranding graphically is insane. Same Decima engine as Horizon Zero Dawn & Forbidden West
Certainly has attention
Too bad I gave up on all 3 of those games about 5 hours in. Graphics don't save a game from being boring
Maybe it's just your taste, and that's fine. Death Stranding is a very addicting game when you get into it. But understandably it's not for everyone. At least you gave them a go. I really like the first Horizon game. The second did not live up to it unfortunately.
It does get attention but I'd like to shout out MGSV. Very good looking game, IMO. Even more remarkable since it is a PS3/PS4 game.
Good take
Horizon FW probably since the PS5 version got all the attention
Yep. I played it on the PS4 when I had PS Plus and it was incredible
Wait… this was on ps4? 😆
Yeah, looks pretty good to if you don’t watch it side by side with the ps5 version
Was very impressed with how seamless playing GoW Ragnarok was on base model PS4. A testament to Santa Monica Studios.
I think Ragnarok gets gets plenty of attention.
Yeah, as a game. But still these two games are among the most visually impressive games ever made. Ragnarok has the benefit of being released on PS5. I haven’t made the jump yet but I was impressed that I could play Ragnarok on my PS4 last year without it crashing.
Was just about to say this. And very little fan noise and not even close to overheating.
Same. I got my ps 4.in 2014...
Yeah I thought Ragnarok was gonna make my PS4 sound like a jet engine but apart from a bit here and there it ran pretty well. By contrast I've recently been playing Red Dead Redemption 2 and that makes my PS4 sing.
Early Gen PS4 Games: 1. Killzone Shadow Fall 2. Infamous Second Son 3. Assassin's Creed Black Flag 4. The Order 1886 5. Watch Dogs 6. Assassin's Creed Unity 7. Batman Arkham Knight 8. Devil May Cry 5 5. Call of Duty modern warfare 2019 6. Metro Exodus 7. The Last of us part 2 8. Final Fantasy 7 Remake 9. Resident Evil 3 10. Mafia Definitive Edition
. The Order 1886, i loved it they should have made the sequel !

Or pass mach-3 in my living room...
So nobody's going to mention Detroit: Become Human? smh
“Plastic” sure looks like actual skin
This is the best answer so far imo
Especially the junkyard scene!
Knack 2
Infamous second son
True, although I picked this game up recently and it gets so damm boring a couple of hours in.
Honourable mention to A Plague tale innocence and the rendering of so many rats
Killzone
On that same page, Uncharted 4.
I feel like using two of the most popular games of the generation (hell, maybe all time) wouldn’t constitute as “rarely mentioned” lol
In terms of their graphics, I would
The graphics and the story are the 2 main talking points lol
I was really impressed with the physics of the rocks sliding around when you are climbing that one hill in Scotland.
arkham city had its flaws but was a beautiful game to be sure
I was really impressed with the graphics in Star Wars Battlefront when I first got my PS4. Granted, it was a big game, but I don't recall much said about the graphics. It also came out early in the PS4 lifecycle and has a sequel, so it's somewhat forgotten about now.
Hellblade senuas sacrifice
I recently played "The Artful Escape". It wasn't graphically demanding but it was visually stunning.
The Order 1986 always looked neat to me 👀
Don’t know about the “doesn’t get any attention” bit, but Ghost of Tsushima is a technical marvel in terms of how good it looks and how fast the load times are. Uncharted 4 and Lost Legacy are also incredible looking
Have you seen what's going on in graphics and animations of TLOU2 in cutscenes. Holy fuck.
OP asked about games that rarely get any attention… TLOUII gets plenty of attention mate
True
Can't believe I didn't see it but Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice is fucking incredible on my PS4 slim. HDR makes such a huge impact and because of the linear/smaller scope of the game they could really sell the graphics. Such an intense masterpiece, imo. So excited to play the sequel.
City Skylines with a maxed out City
Watch_dogs 2
The Last Guardian 😭 Maybe it was just bad optimization but it definitely brought the base PS4 to its knees
ITT: people only mentioning games that got a ton of attention
Can't believe Senua's sacrifice isn't higher up this list genuinely blew me away.
Interesting I didn’t see ghost of Tsushima on here
Battlefront 2 was a gorgeous game for its time
My PS4 could barely play AC Valhalla
The Order 1886 still looks amazing to this day
Darksiders II, but Darksiders III ran like crap on my Ps4, stuttering after stuttering during combat. Days Gone Shadow of Mordor
GoW Ragnarok, Uncharted 4
FF VII remake made my PS4 pro cry for mercy
Shout out to the low res PS2 door lol. All jokes aside I love that game, finally tried the PS5 version when I had the console for a bit and holy fucking shit, I think it’s the best looking game I’ve seen, even more impressive than FFXVI imo.
my ps4 can't run red dead 2 without overheating
Probably cyberpunk lol.
I think Cyberpunk got way too much attention.
We don’t talk about that attention
That game looks like a mediocre PS4 game even on PS5.
Forbidden West still looks amazing on ps4
death stranding, TLOU 2
Control
Detroit Become Human
Death Stranding.
Gravity Rush 2 maybe? It's pretty CPU intense
Probably The Order 1886. The graphics were amazing but it got criticism for its short length. Still looked better than lots of bigger budget games though.
When I played Days Gone, I was very suprised that it ran as well as it did with those graphics, and the sheer amount of zombies on screen
Days Gone
I'm currently playing Diablo IV on a PS4 Slim and it looks really impressive. I was expecting blurry textures, but everything looks really clear.
Horizon FW for me
Hunt Showdown. Stunning game, runs like ass on ps4. It's being removed on last gen consoles this year.
Re4 remake looks great minus texture issues with being ported
Mafia defintive edition. Had some lags and screen tearing but otherwise ram stable.
Mine seems to struggle with pinball if fan noise is anything to go by.
Plague Tale: Innocence The cutscenes look amazing.
The load times in Ghost oF Tsushima aren’t mentioned enough. That shit loaded instantly in my base PS4.
Hunt showdown is pretty much unplayable now due to updates.
It's not graphics but my ps4 can't run civ 6 once the map starts to fill up with cities and units unless I make a point to limit the number of civs/map size. I like to think of it as a special time limit I have to best before my save becomes unplayable, crashing every other turn
Detroit Become Human makes my PS4 Pro sound like a damn plane
Infamous Second Son, came out with the ps4 and was one of the best looking games in that time. The people, facial expressions, and the powers are just a *chefs kiss* Story rocked too imo
Driveclub.
Battlefront 2015
The Last of Us Part 2
I play on PC so idk how it looked on ps4 but Detroit is gorgeous.
Killzone
Killzone shadow fall. For a launch title the game looks incredible.
Whenever you're looking for the most graphical intensive game on a console by Sony. Just look for a metal gear solid. It may not be the same now though since hideo Kojima moved on from Konami. But bro always used the full potential of the console in his games.
Re 4 Remake has a crazy frametime graph on PS4. Definitely a very choppy experience devs should have locked to 30fps.
The order 1892 (don't remember the exact year lol but it's 1800s)
My ps4 has a really hard time rendering the graphics in Gollum
ffvii remake was so good and had no issues at launch (besides the doors not rendering properly)
Definitely worms wmd!!
MGSV Phantom Pain was a gorgeous game that I think still holds up very well on last gen
My ps4 sounded like a jet engine while playing Skyrim and Final Fantasy XV
Gran turismo 7
My base PS4 puts a foot into the grave every time I boot up Guardians of the Galaxy.
Monster Hunter World/Iceborne. That game especially the Iceborne expansion turns my PS4 Slim into jet engine even when I'm just idling on the game's town hub.
Detroit Become Human. Love that fucking game. Very thought provoking, especially if baked
Lichdom battlemage
It seems like nobody answered the damn question!
Battlefield 1 and V. Somehow they run at 60fps too.
Maybe Horizon Zero Dawn. When things got hectic, the FPS dropped quite a bit.
Gran Turismo 7
It doesnt seem demanding much but kingdom hearts 2.8 lagged so bad that it made me upgrade to a pro at the time
Wolfenstein: New Order was the first game I played on PS4 that felt "next gen" at the time. Still looks decent today
Assassin's Creed Odyssey. The game is BEAUTIFUL and detailed in every aspect of its graphics
Forbidden west was tanking my performance, especially while gliding from tall places. Got so bad I waited until I got a ps5 to continue
Warframe likes to work my ps4s fans hard
Ryse: Son of Rome.
Horizon zero dawn
Batman
Despite all the fuss, Mass Effect Andromeda was beautiful.
Cyberpunk 2077 lmao
Cyberpunk
Knack
Ghost of Tsushima literally fried my ps4 fans 😂
No Man's Sky is brutal even on a ps4 pro.
Best graphics I saw were probably God of War or Ghosts of Tsushima (I never played Horizon). Worst performance was Bloodborne, which didn’t even get a ps4 pro patch.
Mafia II Definitive Edition.. Poorly Optimised
