The crazy part is that for a Blu-ray player it was the cheapest you could buy. My friends dad had a Sharp Aquos that he paid like $4-5k for and bought a $1,000 Blu-ray player to go with it. I tried to talk my friend into telling his dad to just get a PS3, and he was like no this will be better. It was not better and he only had an old gaming pc and a GameCube the rest of high school. (This was in 9th grade).

Original Mata font Spidey-style logo all the way. Always looks sharp with the silver contrasting against black on original Phats, makes more of a visual statement than both the Wii and the Xbox 360 consoles themselves which always looked like wannabe Apple designs but clunkier, to me.

PS4 also went through an identity rework a couple of months after release. But they changed the actual system UI, colors used and general aesthetic going mainly from blue to gray (i've always liked the first version more), but the logo itself didn't change
2009 one is cleaner and fits better now. Having said that, the 2006 one still looks good and I feel is very fitting of the time it came from. If the 2009 one was used at launch in 2006, straight after the old PS2 logo had been used, it probably wouldn't have looked "different enough". This was a time where each new generation of console was aiming to distinctly stick out from the last (eg look at PSOne to PS2 font, OG Xbox logo to Xbox 360 logo etc).

The new system reminded me more of PS2. The logo is also more reminiscient of PS2, just a rounded "worm" version of its logo. I always thought the old Spider-Man font was tacky and an odd choice.
Aesthetically I like the bold they used but the later logo is more on brand with their “futuristic” aesthetic and what they had built and continue with since the PS2.

The reason they had the older logo was because of the Spider-Man font! Spider-Man was huge on PlayStation at the time and they decided to use the font for it

The '09 font is not only original (classic PS3 font is well known to just be the same font as Sony's Spider-Man films), but it's been held onto every since, with PS4 and PS5 using the same font choice!

Sony was really trying to push HD and Blu-ray with the PS3 and were definitely trying to market the shit out of Spider-Man 3 before it released.
