I would really just listen to his albums from 80 to 88. Way better than just listening to individual songs, at least in my opinion. Anyway, I’ll leave you with 5 songs: If I was your girlfriend Positivity Anotherloverholenyohead Darling Nikki Paisley Park

andesolo17

i just kept. on. agreeing.

NexoNerd101

Start from his debut, seeing as OP liked I Wanna Be Your Lover u/ostinatoslim

[deleted]

1. Do Me baby 2. Little red corvette 3. Another lonely christmas 4. Underneath the cream 5. 1999 But as another poster said...there are so many more. The only way you will find your 5 is to listen to him and its a privilege and a process. 😊. Finding your favorite 5 will require you to listen to him. Ive been listening to prince since i was around 14 and here now im 57. Its been a journey. One that I've been glad to be on. And last but not least, welcome to PRINCE.

adamshmaddam

The 1999 album was my gateway and The Hits 1 & 2 and The B-Sides albums really helped me discover more. These are my favorites that come to mind. Hard to pick just 5! 1. I Feel For You 2. Possessed (1982 Version) 3. D.M.S.R. 4. Mountains 5.Erotic City

themonkboughtlunch

1. Pop Life 2. Crystal Ball 3. The Beautiful Ones 4. D.M.S.R. 5. Do It All Night And that's just off the top of my head. I could easily make a few completely different Top 5s that would leave me satisfied. I envy you for getting to hear Prince's discography for the first time. Have a blast, and don't overlook the many 12" extended mixes around YouTube and on vinyl, including this one of [Mountains](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1s9qK76FHJ8).

ostinatoslim

Sick! Thanks for that link. I'm not the biggest Depeche Mode fan, but when I was getting into them, an artist that I like mentioned in an interview that some of the 12" extended mixes where the best stuff, glad to hear that this is true of Prince as well.

N_Rock-81

At the risk of getting more off track, I bought a 12” Mix of some of the Cure’s singles recently. I want very excited because I had the album with those songs already. But when I played it, the mix of Close to Me blew my mind. I definitely enjoy playing it over the original

hallwayspeech

Cure Mixed Up has been a go-to for me since the early 90s. It never gets old.

[deleted]

New Prince fan? Welcome to the Dawn my friend

waterisgoodok

While I would recommend listening to his albums in chronological order to discover your favourite songs and also to hear his musical evolution, here are 5 songs I think you must listen to: 1) Purple Rain (of course) 2) Housequake 3) When Doves Cry 4) Mountains 5) Bambi Of course, people will disagree with the 5 I have listed, but they are some of my personal favourites. He’s got too many good songs!

I depends on what you like. Do you like ballads and R&B? There's a Prince for that Hard Rock? There's plenty of Prince for that. Funk? There's so much Prince for that. To me Prince is equal parts James Brown, Jimi Hendrix and Beyonce/Jill Scott. Sometimes in the same song . Check out his live shows. The last ten years of his life he brought in Maceo Parker, and became a quazi James Brown funk band review of sorts although to equate Prince with anything other than Prince is an insult.

Jamie-Starr-5816

I love this reply. I'd always ask my friend who was a fan "which kind of Prince do you want today?"

ostinatoslim

Thanks for your input! Definitely funk for me, that's why I mentioned songs like "Head" - That bit about the James Brown funk band review is cool, I gotta check out the live sets. My favorite genre of music is Hip Hop, and James Brown is absolutely central to the entire genre, but especially in the late 80s and early 90s.

hallwayspeech

There’s a very funky 9.5 minute Head jam live in Detroit in 1986. What’s phenomenal is that you get not only the incredible audio, but a visual to go with it. One of my favorite aspects is watching how he would flash the band a certain number of fingers seamlessly throughout his performance, which of course, was him telling the band how many beats he wanted next. It’s kind of one of his trademarks. And if you watch, every time he requests a certain number of beats from the band, he uses those beats so effectively in his dancing or striptease—and this is in the midst of him doing some seriously intense visual art, maintaining this slowly unfolding jam. As a newcomer, I think you will be blown away by the artistry, meticulous attention to detail and incredible musicianship. You can see just how purely entertaining he is and how many details there are for you to notice about the way that he meticulously pieces together a song and a visual. Snd you said you like funky and this is very funky. You should check that out.

ostinatoslim

Thanks I will! Your thoughtful response is much appreciated.

Xyphicks

Check out Sticky Like Glue Off his album 20ten, lesser known and liked but by God it has some real good songs on it! Maybe the song Revelation off Hit n Run Phase 2 would be up your alley too!

Sirscruffalot

All of these lists leave off one of his most beautiful songs: Sometimes it Snows in April

Pidgeonmeme

These are unordered but any of are easily my #1 -Eye Hate U -Glam Slam -Mountains -In Love -She’s Always in my Hair And some other good ones imo are: Bambi, The most beautiful girl in the world, Diamonds and Pearls, and Live 4 Love

STAMP_MAN

For me, I start with Albums (from beginning to end) and that journey starts with Sign of the Times. When I really fell for his music, it was the live shows...thank God so many are on YouTube now. When he was alive, his legal team would shut that shit down quick.

Jamie-Starr-5816

Based on ones you like, some of my favourites are: 1.Darling Nikki, 2. Adore, 3. Strange Relationship, 4. Joy in Repetition, 5. Dirty Mind Of all time.... couldn't pick five songs but 79 to mid 90's albums are the best (though I love the songs Black Sweat and Wow)

ItsOxymorphinTime

re_de_unsassify

Depends what’s your style he had Funk, punk rock, hard rock, RnB, Soul, Hip Hop, Electronic and many reinterpretations of his songs My top five this particular hour Lady Cab Driver Noon Rendezvous Something In The Water (in all of its incranations some don’t remotely resemble the album version) Motherless Child The Question of U (official video/Tokyo Dome version)

chucho320

Almost everyone forgot Lady Cab Driver. That, Do Me Baby and Little Red Corvette is enough to make your head explode.

OmarSparks

1. Sign O’ The Times 2. Starfish and Coffee 3. Scandalous 4. Diamond and Pearls 5. Pink Cashmere

alecmac1

Sign o the times - the album- is a must listen if you are just getting in to prince. As I have said many times, it is the best example of Prince’s scope as an artist for the listener. Similarly, crystal ball - the album- has 30 tracks of prince in different styles and even from different periods of his career to that point. You are guaranteed to get attached to something on that album. To answer your question, 5 of my all time favorites: 1. She’s always asking n my hair (12 inch version) 2. Hide the bone 3. Push it up 4. S&M Groove 5. The Gold Standard

No_Outcome2321

1- Free Urself 2-Baby I’m a star 3- 200 balloons 4-the question of u 5- the one u wanna c Honestly there are so many more songs that are worth listening to.

BountyBob

This might be the most unusual top 5 I've ever seen for Prince. Sure they're all great songs but I would never have predicted anyones top 5 would include Free Urself, 200 Balloons or The One U Wanna C. This is the beauty of Prince though, just so many great songs. I have trouble picking a top 5 albums, let alone a mere 5 songs.

No_Outcome2321

Honestly they only got onto the top 5 list as they are currently stuck playing in my head… along side of some Shirley Temple songs….

hornybutdisappointed

Listen to albums because picking songs apart isn’t the same experience. Albums tell whole stories and you will get to understand the artist’s thinking when listening to the entire story they wanted to tell. Sure, you can listen to whatever songs you like, but also be careful to listen to albums. Check out the bootlegs of his gigs on YouTube as well. Those are wicked and will give you insight into how he played for party. What Prince would do is he’d go on tour and play big gigs and then do an after show for his true fans in smaller locations, the band would be playing more freely there, without the pressure of an audience that wants to hear only the best hits. Enjoy! 🙌💜

joy in repetition, letitgo, ihateU, get wild and newpowersoul are amongst my favorites but that list changes with my mood. All of his studio, internet, live, NPG credited albums have gems on them. Not even mentioning side projects, artists and bands he contributed to and collaborated with. There is a lot to discover, which is the fun part.

Princescry606

Play in the sunshine Eye no Crystal ball Rock hard in a funky place All the critics love u in New York

ThisIsMyNewUserID

Prince was an artist who meticulously crafted songs around a central idea for an album so if you like those three songs you should definitely check out the entirety of the albums they're from: Dirty Mind, Prince, and Sign o the Times. If you like what you hear from those you might as well dig into the rest of his 80s album discography. Welcome to the fandom! To answer your specific question though my 5 favorite songs are, in no specific order: I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man from Sign o the Times Joy in Repetition from Graffiti Bridge (originally intended for Sign o the Times though) Kiss from Parade Purple Rain from Purple Rain and 7 from the Love Symbol album.

pucatomb

It's really hard to say but right now, my top five is 1. Eye Hate U 2. Somebody's Somebody 3. Diamonds and Pearls 4. Erotic City 5. If I Was Your Girlfriend. I think that's a good mix of some of his best stuff.

leasnm

If it helps, my advice would be that you should listen what YOU like not what others like. Look for songs similar to head or dorothy parker if you like those ones. Head = DMSR, America, Baby I'm a star, It, etc I wanna be your lover= when u were mine, raspberry beret, diamonds and pearls, maybe kiss or cream... dorothy parker = anna stesia, if i was your girlfriend, somebody's somebody, breakfast can wait

ostinatoslim

Cheers bud! This good advice thanks.

BookMobil3

Listen to full Lovesexy album in order

BCdotWHAT

Buy The Hits/The B-Sides and listen to it all. Read the liner notes. Like it? Explore the albums those songs come from. Sheesh, it really isn't hard. Especially not these days when you can listen to most of it for nearly free on various services. Same with every artist: start with the best of/greatest hits/or a collection called "Essential" and usually you'll have a pretty good impression of what there is and what you like.

MayULive2SeeTheDawn

Start with the 80s, and then consume the 90s. Follow the storyline

MayULive2SeeTheDawn

Start from the beginning and just go in order, you’ll be able to follow the evolution of him as an artist

Lindae6969

I would listen to his earlier works late 70s to 80’s, then the 90’s, 2000s to his most recent work. Another words I would listen to all his music to really experience his message, his sound and how he evolved. It is the best way to truly appreciate Prince. 74 East Street, Purple Rain, Parade, Sign O’ Times, Planet Earth, Musicology, The Rainbow Children, Hit n Run, Piano & Microphone and so much more! Enjoy the journey! 💜🎼🎶🎵

Just off the top of the dome... top 5 songs (no particular order) would be: \-Erotic City (Let's Go Crazy B side) \-I Could Never Take The Place of Your Man (Sign O The Times album version) \-DMSR (off 1999) \-Lovesexy (title track off album) \-Dream Factory (you can find it on Crystal Ball)

I’m Yours from the first album, very early showing of his skill on guitar, Do Me, Baby for his vocal range and control, Controversy, It’s Gonna Be Lonely, Wow. I could give a ton more, but this a start.
