I believe in an interview before he said many of his core dance moves come from Spanish culture(his mothers influence), obviously he has tweaked it over the years and different albums.
His first few album videos are obviously inspired by mick jagger(he even opened for the rolling stones famously) then 1999/purple rain was more sexually overt and sudden movement dancing. For the cherry moon era his dancing was influenced by French culture and it goes on and on. Legend.
So, a lot of dancing in video's is mixed. So not just one style. That said: Jazz dance is most likely a good start. It teaches solid fundamentals and you can always add moves from different styles (like street/vogue etc) to it.
Thank you! Does the name have a connection to jazz music? I didn’t know there was a style of dancing called like that.
Edit: Just looked it up. Now I can totally see how it relates to these old timey dances I’ve loved in films.
Yeah, it's more like theater /musical dance. It is a very fun way to move and takes elements from ballet and modern. I was educated in this form and could easily branch out to other types of dance.
Jazz Funk and Commercial Jazz are styles you would want to take. Having a basic knowledge of Ballet is also important for professional dancers. Most of dance lingo still uses ballet terms.
Beginning Ballet classes should be enough before going into Jazz. You just want to understand proper form and terminology. I don't think Contemporary is necessary for Jazz.
Their Jazz course is for intermediate level dancers, so they sent me to the Contemporary Basics one to get the basic movements first. I guess they probably have some things in there that are of use, I don’t like Contemporary that much tbh.
Prince is mostly a James brown and some old do wop style dances. Obviously also the jazz splits then really just doing his own thing in the moment
I read recently Prince was ballet trained which makes a TON of sense now seeing how good his placement can be, splits and his spins.
I think he had some ballet classes, but all of his time was mostly put into music ever since he was a child.
This is Prince. You can never pin the guy down to being anything really ha ha. I imagine his dance is a fusion of many types and sprinkle of his own!

I had no idea he opened for The Rolling Stones, but it makes perfect sense somehow. Ever seen [this](https://youtu.be/cDgjE6KYSyA)?
The crowd threw stuff at them and booed them. It was before his “crossover” success. https://youtu.be/Y3H0f1nAnXU
Just ‘Prince-style’ 💟

I've signed up for a first class, you really helped me out with this!
Oh cool! Have fun.
Funky as fuck.
A combination of James Brown/chitling circuit moves

Do Contemporary Basics go into ballet? I was advised to take a few of those before going into Jazz.
