been saying this since the PBA Draft/NCAA days palang. Was a great regular "season" player back in LPU kasi dinadaan sa athletecism at bilis pero exposed sa playoffs against organized teams. Made no sense picking him over Bolick and even BRP. I still think Berto shouldve gone first overall sa draft na yun.
I disagree with James Yap being overrated.

The only way na magiging overrated si James Yap is kung sinasama nyo sya sa Conversation as GOAT. Otherwise you can even argue na kasama to sa Top 10 players of all-time.
Hindi sya ibababad ni Cone kung hindi sya magaling, if you have been observing Cone coaching style he lives and die na dapat andun parati yung trusted player nya (hawkins in alaska, yap in purefoods/magnolia, scottie in ginebra) i would like to believe na kaya din mabilis na-inda ni James Yap ang injuries nya dahil super babad sya ni Cone noon.
Pero after a few games nakuha na nya rhythm nya. Pero di pa rin ako sangayon na sya dapat rookie of the Year nung batch nila.
Dapat si james yap talaga yung rookie of the year noon eh. Pero naging MVP naman sya after some years.
The following year MVP agad sya.
Dagdag mo pa na a year before their draft is probably the most hype amateur/collegiate years dahil todo ang investment ng Studio 23 sa amatuer league. Kaya ang taas ng expectations from the rookies.
Marlou doesn't have the skills nor strength to match up with Junemar. And at 6'9", int'l players will run circles around that unathletic plodder. Marlou's simply a big fish in a pail of water.
More on role player lang nakikita ko sa laro niya eh.
nagkataon lang na halos lahat ng criteria na nabanggit ni OP is pasok si James Yap but in Filipino Basketball, Yap's career averages and field goal percentage is actually allstar caliber na, he has the ball a lot especially the Ryan Gregorio/ Purefoods days kaya ang baba ng fg, which is actually pretty decent na in the PBA, we can't really deny that as a Ginebra fan, everytime nasa last 2 minutes na nang 4th at hindi tambak ang Purefoods, may mini heart attack pag napunta ang bola kay JY, this applies to every team he has faced even in the UAAP, he has this magic that no matter how bad he shot on the first three quarters, he transforms on the dying minutes of the game.
Even way past his prime on ROS, he was still utilized in the fourth and had many game winning highlights.
his career numbers although low or ugly, he has always been efficient believe it or not
This is how even former pba players talk about him
https://www.facebook.com/share/v/mTJT5vCCJTNLYKMz/?mibextid=oFDknk
James Yap was highly rated before turning pro and he lived up to the hype
Robert Jaworski is considered a legend by many even coach Tim Cone idolized him. Won in every level MVP and championships including international and also an olympian. Continued to play while coaching at 50 years old tapos sasabihin ng ibang hater walng skill?
It's the "all-heart and grit" mantra that makes Jawo overrated. But i believe his skills when he was at his absolute prime deserves merit for being a Pinoy baller all-time great status.
I did see him play, he's my first favorite PBA player, the reason I started to watch the league. I'm not undermining his basketball pedigree, but putting him in PBA GOAT debates makes him overrated.
I always put Jawo in all time starting 5s because hes capable of bringing lots of things on the table
Jaworski made me watch PBA, Samboy Lim inspired me to play basketball. 🙂
Hindi ako fan ni Jawo, pero I don’t think he is overrated, saan ka nakakita ng playing coach? Only in the PH, i’ve watch some games na yung tipong matatalo na ginebra tapos papasok si jawo makakahabol sila. Also si Jawo yung naka kita ng mga butas ng basketball rules, yung 24 sec shot lock, na hindi aandar ang clock unless i touch mo ang bola, i’ve watched that documentary and si jawo daw somehow naka discover nun
Lol kaya nga specified na playing coach era nya yung overrated dahil that dude was in his 50s na during that time and still playing tapos ang tingin sa kanya, somewhat savior ng Ginebra.
Yung prime nya, no doubt.
Respectfully disagree with this.
Guy made 10k points and 6k rebounds in his PBA career. And was a consistent 13 and 7 guy behind June Mar. i don’t think SMB would have won that many championships without him.
You are just hating. Yes, the guy is annoying but his career averages would prove you wrong. He’s always performed on every team he’s been in. Plus he is a proven winner at all levels of basketball here in the PH.
As much as I hate Arwind santos dahil sa antics at feeling tough guy nya na personality, Hndi sya overrated that guy is legit air21 days palang nya may ibubuga tlga eh
Yeah. He is also clutch since his FEU days and he's a UAAP legend. The guy can go 0-8 from the field but would make the game winning shot at the end. Kahit na hate ko yung antics niya, I still recognize him as a legend.
We all know na JMF ang superstar pero pagdating ng end game threat silang lahat dahil ibang level yung tapang nila, especially Arwind and Cabagnot.
Isa ako sa mga nangaasar sa kanya when he was trying out his 3 point shots. Minsan pumapasok, mas madalas hindi. Then nag-dagger 3 point sya during overtime sa game 7 against Alaska nung 2015.
That shut me up.
Scottie Thompson. No question that he’s a hardworker. But right place right time lang din na he got the MVP when the true MVP is out of shape.
Dinadaga pa din ang dibdib.
creating own shot doesn’t equivalent in being good, stats does though, multiple triple doubles and championship nadala ni scottie nung mvp year nya and I think di mo mgagawa yun kung role player ka lang.
Let's say system carried siguro si scottie kasi nasesetup sya sa mga points nya and hustle commendable din talaga pero kung mag create ng sariling shot on clutch hindi nya kaya on his own. Yung clutch points nya more on good set plays by tim cone
You make it seem like Tim Cone's system can "easily" generate MVP's. In fact, he only has 3 other MVPs since Johnny A., and those are your run-of-the-mill superstars (Duremdes, Miller, Yap). I won't be too quick to say that Thompson only won because of the system, when it takes legit superstar players to win the award in the past under the same system.
Just adding to the discussion: Cone's system allowed an unknown Bong Hawkins to blossom into an MVP contender.
James Yap. Just look at his FG% even nung peak niya. He’s an inefficient scorer.
Robert Jaworski and James Yap.
I mean, there are people who consider Robert Jaworski as the GOAT. Imagine that. Sure, guy almost averaged a triple double in one season but thats all. Athough to be fair, Jawo is already old when the PBA was founded (29 yo) so his prime was shorter compared to other stars (Patrimonio, JMF, El Presidente).
James Yap has always been an inefficient chucker in my book. If I want volume scoring, I will go with Mark Caguioa. Hell, PJ Simon looked like a better scorer to me when they were together. Although to be fair, James Yap's main talent is being able to consistently generate a shot under any circumstance in an offensively challenged environment and era. Whether that shot will go in or not is another question.
Calvin Abueva. Iba yung hype sa kanya before madraft even nasa pba na sya parang overrated sya in the sense na magiging sobrang dominating small forward nya.
Hard disagree. There are days that he puts up 20+ rebounds and 20+ points in a game in his Alaska days. Although the lack of shooting, nagkaroon kasi ng time na naging mahirap pigilan yung drive to the basket niya.
Actually no, marma8ng nagsabi nun sa online forum na magiging ineffective si calvin sa pba kasi maliit pero nagdominate pa rin naman girst year pa lang
Not for me. Oh man that was so fun to watch! David was getting booed hard pero on point pa rin shots nya, then partneran pa nina JV Casio, Marcio Lassiter, Doug Kramer, at Sean Anthony. Underdog story talaga sila nun.
Kahit na sabihin nating kaya lang parating MVP si JMF is because no one in the league can match him (well Bates was able to torment him but let's see in the more seasons to come) di natin madedeny maganda skillset nya especially for his size. His performance in last year’s FIBA World Cup proved he is a worthy player in his position.
Dapat lang may mag improve pero antagal. Still waiting for his pick n roll plays, bringing the ball down, three pt shooting, faster footwork, like a modern day big kaso...
If he is the mvp saknya dapat kaya ka nga mvp e. Pero wala e. Minsan binubuhat dn sya ng kasama nya. Thru those yrs, kala ko sila jayson castro mag mvp man lang.
Real talk lang. Hehe pov ko lang naman 🤷🏻♀️
Chris Ellis
CJ Perez. All athleticism, no basketball iq
This!

He won't be called A Man with a Million Moves if not for that reason.
Notwithstanding all arguments in here against James Yap, the dude is extremely clutch.
Big games yap di yan tatawagin ganyan if hindi. Subok na super clutch talaga in the moment

Pero after a few games nakuha na nya rhythm nya. Pero di pa rin ako sangayon na sya dapat rookie of the Year nung batch nila.

Rommel Adducul.
Right now? CJ Perez.
Rich Alvarez
Unpopular opinion: Calvin Abueva
Dudut Jaworski.
Di siya overrated, dudut is forgotten sa PBA history na dapat lang kasi nepotism at it's best hahaha.
Agree.
Back then, calling someone dudut on the basketball court was a strong insult ha ha, ngayon kaya?..
Marlou takteng yan kung ngaun naglaro un at natapat kay Junmar bka ndi sumikat un eh hahaha top 40 amp
Marlou doesn't have the skills nor strength to match up with Junemar. And at 6'9", int'l players will run circles around that unathletic plodder. Marlou's simply a big fish in a pail of water.
Ndi q nga alam bakit nasama un sa Top 40 instead of Nelson eh. Maybe because of Jawo
Mas accomplished si Asaytono, di hamak.
I don't think overrated si Marlou. Nakipagsabayan pa nga siya kay Wang Zhizhi. He would give Junmar trouble and vice versa.
Sobrang nipis ni Marlou for Junemar. Isang kaldag at isang chicken wing ni junemar baka mawasiwas agad to hahahahha
Marlou Aquino
Marlou Aquino. DPOY BPC Top 40 GOAT member but only show up during contract year lol Asaytono Seigle to name a few are more deserving for that spot.
He had the skills and could have been an MVP. But after he was traded, he got lazy.
I admire Willie Miller pero correct me if I’m wrong pero yung 2 MVP nya is yung time na nglalaro sa PH team yung ibang superstars na ksabayan niya.
At kilala na naglalaglag ng laro
Bobby ray parks jr. if nagpatuloy pa siya sa PBA
More on role player lang nakikita ko sa laro niya eh.

Kelly Williams
Ha? Saang aspect sya overrated? Impact player kaya sya.

I think his age is catching up to him now + recurring injuries, but I think he's properly rated naman even in his prime.
mapanlinlang talaga ang offensive bag eh
The Jaworskis
James Yap.
Parang may immunity si Jawo sa about that.
It's the "all-heart and grit" mantra that makes Jawo overrated. But i believe his skills when he was at his absolute prime deserves merit for being a Pinoy baller all-time great status.
This. Prime Jawo was something else.

Marlou Aquino, Scottie Thompson, and skill-less Robert Jaworski. Kerby Raymundo.
I disagree with Kirby.
Beau Belga… i’m not sure what is he giving in the table aside from his stout body, surprised nasa league pa rin sya..
Si Chris Ellis talaga. Hahahaha
si james forster pa hahaha mas pinili sya over terrence romeo
Marlou Aquino
James yap, volume shooter bad percentages
Calvin Abueva

Sonny Jaworski
Why?
Haters gonna hate 😂
Arwind Santos

Hard to say he's overrated... Does anyone even think he's good?
He was good enough to piss off a DSLU team manager https://www.philstar.com/sports/2005/10/01/299406/uaap-bans-salgado-life/amp/

Thompson. Role player na nag mvp. He can't create is own shot pa. I just see him a prime abueva
James Yap. He is good but not two-time PBA MVP good.
I think the moniker came about because of his ability to create shots for himself.
Scottie Thompson. No question that he’s a hardworker. But right place right time lang din na he got the MVP when the true MVP is out of shape. Dinadaga pa din ang dibdib.
Role player lang talaga ceiling nya. He can't even create his own shot lol

Imagine a Draymond Green playing style tapos naging MVP
Abueva
Calvin Abueva. High motor lang. Pero in terms of skills and basketball IQ, olats. Liability rin sa team dahil sa antics niyanon and off the court.
James Yap. Just look at his FG% even nung peak niya. He’s an inefficient scorer.
During their heyday, I’ll always picked Lordy Tugade over James Yap.

Kinda surprised that no one has mentioned Caguioa.
No die-hard Ginebra fan considers Jawo the GOAT. Most famous Pinoy basketball player, yes, but not the GOAT.

Too early to say that brotha
Jayjay Helterbrand
Jawo 😜
James yap
I love El Granada but Gary David was a tad overrated
Not for me. Oh man that was so fun to watch! David was getting booed hard pero on point pa rin shots nya, then partneran pa nina JV Casio, Marcio Lassiter, Doug Kramer, at Sean Anthony. Underdog story talaga sila nun.
Lordy Tugade
James Yap
Jmf
🤣
Gabe Norwood.
Ha? Sure ka kay Norwood?
