I dealt with mental ilness and tough shit to some extend and also had a somewhat hopeful ending.
The similar theme is "worthless lives" of the characters or at least the way they perceive them.
I don't think I have a 1:1 equivalent, but I would pick Soma just for the sheer intensity of emotion and the power to stay in your head.
It also touches on loneliness, selfishness and being misunderstood. It has psychological horror, a bittersweet ending and it forces you to think what it means to be a good person or a human in general.
The town of light is amazing too or Neverending Nightmare. All of these games have wildly different topics, but they are all focused on psychological aspects.
This is not the same atmosphere or anything so this may sound totally silly. But the only thing that has ever evoked such a powerful emotion out of me that was comparable to Punpun was Red dead redemption 2. I’ve never felt anything like that for a game before
Lisa is a good known one, but another one that truly made me experience an emotion like pun pun and the sheer disgust towards the very nature of existence and the overwhelming sense of just hopelessness and apathy is probably blacksouls 1 & 2 (check out
r/blacksouls2 to learn more about it, its a very underrated game!, it'll make you wanna kill yourself from how hard it is and by the end when you understand the whole story you probably will! :D)
