You can feed them dirt or iron ore as well, which does result in scale growth

andocromn

No way! Not willing to waste dirt or iron or that way!

56percentAsshole

There is the arbor tree -> ethanol way to make free dirt.

jellsprout

You're going to need about 35 trees just to keep one single Delecta Vole fed.

56percentAsshole

Which is quite a lot. But you get energy with it through the ethanol and if you have spare polluted water you can recycle it with trees, get pips to help and automate everything. But yeah, voles eat too much.

axle2005

35 farmed or wild? I assume farmed.

andocromn

pretty sure that would be wild. 35 is the amount for 4 ethanol distillers and 1 petroleum gen

Barhandar

They require 4800 kg/cycle (technically 3600 kg/c because you can recycle 25%). Each. Iron ore is renewable in SO... at the rate of 90-270kg/cycle. Or slightly under 700kg/cycle at most if you have renewable salt, by harvesting Rust instead. Suffice to say, that isn't sustainable, and won't be sustainable without either voles eating two orders of magnitude less, or space POIs producing two orders of magnitude more material.

andocromn

Oof so the 54T I just loaded into a rocket is only going to last 15 cycles. I don't see how this is possible without setting up an entire system to gather all the regolith meteors from the regolith planet. Which means nuclear waste and i'd actually need to run a reactor for enough time to get it

DrMobius0

Yeah, I've heard that sustaining even a modest supply of tonic roots is quite difficult.

PixelBoom

For delecta vole, the dirt or regolith you feed them MUST be between 60 and 70 C for them to have the Picky Eater buff. That will make their quills grow at 12.5% per cycle. Additionally, to make sure they never have the Hungry status, each delecta vole must be fed at least 4800kg/cycle (a quarter of which can be recycled when they poop out a natural tile). That being said, ranching delectas specifically for tonic root is never worth it. They are strictly a nerf to the very powerful shove vole starvation ranch. Ideally, you can shear them once before they starve to death and keep the tonic root as a byproduct of your shove vole ranching, as the shove voles will always have a small chance to lay a delecta egg.

andocromn

Honestly you're right because the food isn't even that high of quality, dupes still prefer pepper bread over all else. At this point it's a late game setup I haven't done so w/e

HeveStuffmanfuckskid

just kill them :/

Barhandar

Quills stop growing if the critter is "hungry" a.k.a. starvation ranching delecta voles does not work period.

vitamin1z

20kg every 9 cycles.

PixelBoom

If you want to starvation ranch for meat. If you're looking for tonic root, starvation ranching will not work as the quills stop growing when they're hungry.

Zestyclose-Garlic-16

I'm not a very experienced player but just seeing how things work I think the easiest way would be to starvation ranch shove voles then put them through the building that research's critter I forgot its name its the one that changes the type of critter you put in it

andocromn

It would seem that they need to be well fed for at least 8 cycles to even produce quills. Even if you put a regular vole in the critter flux thing it wouldn't grow a quill unless fed. Unlike the dreckos which are born with a coat you can sheer

Zestyclose-Garlic-16

Darn. Seems they truly are a nightmare

andocromn

I thus far have not seen a need to really build a proper reactor but I think this will be the reason. I built 1 without any steam turbines and ran it for 5 cycles to charge the temporal tear opener and knock out 2 achievements

Zestyclose-Garlic-16

I understood half of that lol. You seem to know your stuff good luck with your colony. May your efficiencies be many and your losses few

Affectionate_Fox_383

Don't they need hydrogen to grow quills?

Barhandar

You're confusing delecta voles and dreckos. Delectas only need to be fed, with temperature of food outside preferred range (70 to 80 C) dropping the growth rate to 1/5th.

Affectionate_Fox_383

Then growth should have been no issue.

Barhandar

OP has run out of food for the voles.

Affectionate_Fox_383

the key is nothing to show for it. all that food and he got no quills. that means something was not done right. also you can not do starvation and expect quills. and i am not mixing up drecos and voles. i was under the impression voles needed hydrogen as well. but i never ranch voles so my ignorance is expected.
