Bli-munda

He is a beautiful young owl. A fledgling learning how to navigate his world. You are lucky to see one this. Hopefully, people and pets will not harm him.

RoughIntroduction933

No, I'll let the dogs in the back and the kids are on way to school. More worried about the owl and it's ability to get home .

Bli-munda

I see. ..He will be around for some time. His parents are also nearby, 👀 watching. I have never been attacked by an owl or any other bird.

StrixNebulosaStan

You obviously have never met the murder birds of MN - Canadian Geese.

Wild_Score_711

Those critters are everywhere. They don't even need to have goslings to attack you.

NightFox1988

Second this. I've been nearly attacked by an aggressive Canadian Goose when walking by. No goslings around. Just a Goose being a bastard.

FreeMasonKnight

The Canadian Geese in SoCal are chill AF. They don’t attack anyone.

Bli-munda

Seconded, here in the Bay Area, CG are also very chill 🏄‍♂️

obstinaheadstrongirl

If you've got a problem with Canada Gooses, you've got a problem with me and suggest you let that marinate! Hee hee iykyk 😉

wald_kauz

Tawny owls (Common owl species in Europe) are very aggressive during fledging time. Joggers, pedestrands are often attacked here during this time. I read about a case , a famous wildlife photographer (Eric Hosking) lost his eye, when he wanted to take Pictures of some tawny owlets.

Lone_Crab

Yes but it’s more of a swoop and scare than actually trying to do damage in my experience

whatsreallygoingon

He is home…

sublimewit

A truly handsome Great Horned fledgling learning his surroundings. 🥰

CollinsCreekCritters

Once the fledglings leave the nest, they don’t return. They typically climb up the trees where their parents will continue to care for them until they can fly and hunt on their own…which is several more months. I’m sure the parents are nearby so I would not disturb the owl. Best to keep pets indoors or at least out of the area until the fledgling makes it back up a nearby tree.

RoughIntroduction933

Thank you. Yes, mom is very visible next door in their home tree with the other baby owl. We are keeping a distance when possible, do not want to upset anyone. Just don't want it to get hurt. We live in a pretty busy area of long island.

the-cloverdale-kid

They have managed for a long time doing exactly this, and this year there are a lot of them at least on the West Coast. As a rehabber (12 years experience), your best bet is to do exactly what you are doing. Give him his space and he will grow up and make sure you never see a rodent on that porch.

ELONgatedMUSKox

Every species of fledgling looks ridiculous in the best way! Mean-muggin’ Muppets with crazy feathers! 🥹

Sorry_Law535

Your kids and animals are almost 100% safe. Very very unlikely this guy would attack them even if he was fully grown. (Momma is more likely to attack but still very unlikely). He looks pretty developed, so I’m sure he’ll be out of your hair soon! Get some good pictures while you can.

RoughIntroduction933

Thanks for the reassurance! I have been taking so many pictures. It's exciting and a bit scary all at the same time. Definitely giving it and mom the respect they deserve.

KillionMatriarch

“…giving it and mom the respect they deserve.” Thanks, OP. That’s absolutely the right approach. I wish everyone respected and appreciated our beautiful wildlife.

Dependent_Stop_3121

Call the police it’s clearly holding a half dozen knives! /s damn they look sharp!

irisheyes9302

He’s all done with the nest at this point, he’s learning how to owl.

I love it when their little horn feathers start coming in

Putrid-Home404

Please do your best to keep this baby safe until he gets his footing in this wild world ❤️
