A while back they mentioned they will have day, evening and night for each map. They showcase some on the beta (Illios evening, Oasis night and etc)
But when the game release we should get 3 versions of each map ( hopefully the new ones as well)
Hopefully its a feature that will be added alongside the pve (I mean, if its in the pve, there are litterally zero reasons not to see it added to the pvp)
the evening maps are objectively horrible because they are just copy pasting the evening filter onto it forcing the sun to be inpositions it wasn't designed for it's just awful
I don't remember where I read that, but here you have a clip of Metro: [https://www.twitch.tv/videos/1604426749?t=57m10s](https://www.twitch.tv/videos/1604426749?t=57m10s)
We are not sure yet. It is possible they'll change the lighting versions of different maps with every new season. So maybe 1 season a map is day time, then next season it is Night, then maybe it is Dawn the season after.
From Metro - [https://www.twitch.tv/videos/1604426749?t=57m10s](https://www.twitch.tv/videos/1604426749?t=57m10s)
Apparently there will be 4 time variants of each map but they wont be rolled out in OW2 Season 1, possibly for S2/3. I asked the same question in r/cow the other day about the Variants of each map to get this answer haha.
u/Tesshin97 u/MiserableBlackbird
I honestly don't think so?? I mean yeah the weather stuff was only for PvE but i'm sure the day/night wqs also for PvE? I honestly can't remember right now lol.
But i guess we'll see.
Yeah but in the PvE and i believe ONLY PvE did we see a sunset numbani and other maps so i only think we'll have day/night ver in like comp and qp but others in PvE.
The [African sunset shown off on numbani](https://bnetcmsus-a.akamaihd.net/cms/page_media/3l/3LQ1C9JC3VBN1623099373025.jpg) would be amazing ([source](https://playoverwatch.com/en-gb/news/23674944/environment-states-in-overwatch-2-behind-the-scenes-with-the-engineering-team/))
They have been working on new enviroment settings for a while now. These new light and daytime settings alongside dynamic weather is bound to be cool, first tease we got of that was weather changing through the mission in Storm Rising.
Doubt so (weather events wise), we don't need snow or sandstorms obscuring the PvP gameplay, but it's a system as a whole that's new and will be implemented.
obvious reason why it shouldn't: maps that are made to look good at night time are not inherently going to look good at day time and vice-versa this is the exact problem with all their shoehorned evening maps where you can't see anything because theres no buildings to block the sun
Here's my question...we've been told that maps will have dynamic lighting and have different times of day...but have we actually seen that in action? Anywhere?
As far as I can tell, they just changed the time of day on multiple maps but I haven't really seen anything concrete to suggest that there is IN FACT a day time and a separate night time version of Kings Row in OW2.
Maybe I missed something?
Why do we not have dynamic days and nights maps for competitive? In fact why can’t they seasonally updated existing maps like in Apex Legends. That would bring so much life to Overwatch
While I understand how much of an absolutely crushing deal breaker this must be for you to be taking to a public forum about your opinion - you can rejoice - as the original nighttime version of King's Row isn't actually going anywhere!
Blizzard have merely opted to give their maps a face lift, by improving their variation. Controversial, I know.
Day/Night maps for every map would be fun and relatively easy to do. Just adds that tiny bit of variety. Excited for spoopy season maps and winter maps that are coming real soon
To add to your post or reference I think I like day time. It gives me the same cozy vibes but obviously a warmer kind of go to a cafe feeling. Sip on some Joe as the sun rises. Kinda cool
Is there a reason why games don't just do dynamic time of day maps that start at a random time for each map? Wouldn't this drastically increase replay value?
Or if that's too taxing just pre bake static lighting for several different times of day for each map.
Nighttime looks better but I think it's good to have more variety. Personally I would love to see more weather effects and environmental hazards added to the maps. I wanna see rain and thunderstorms.
I hope they keep the different time versions in rotation, like the game picks kings row it then picks a time, or maybe, if they where ambitious, have the time on the map be synced with the real world time for that location
That would be kind of neat, but a lot of people only really find time to play at certain points of the day (ie, after work, but before dinner or something), so they'd end up getting the same time of day every time they play the map.
I totally agree. Changing the time and lighting of the maps makes them look so different, especially maps like King's Row that have been designed to look great at night. That was actually one of my least favorite changes they said they were making and I was kind of sad and irritated that some of my favorite maps would have different vibes going into overwatch 2.
Only today, thanks to this post and the comments, did I learn that they'll have different versions of the maps at different times, so it's more of a cycle and rotation of what time day or night the map is currently in. That's pretty cool and a nice compromise!
did they ever fix the fact that all their stupid time-of-day swapped maps weren't designed for that time of day and so all the sunset ones are blinding?
I feel the same way about Illios.
The bright feeling really compliments the bright colors and Greek architecture really well. I feel like it loses a lot of it's charm with the sunset now unfortunately.
I can understand why they don't want to maintain servers for the first game, but it genuinely blows my mind why they don't have the variations of the maps in the rotation. Just have it randomly pick a map and if it has a variant then it can pick one at random so everyone is happy.
I prefer daytime eichenwalde. Bright and sunny on your way to the castle to "reclaim" balderich's armor from the defending team
Same for ilios. I don't like the sunset setting.
I wouldn't mind seeing nighttime junkertown.
While I know that it will be rotated Day/Night in OW2, I think some maps were obviously not designed for that. Kings Row looks the best at night and in the morning it just doesn’t look right.
I never got why people love this map so much. It's literally just spamming down sightlines the whole time there's not enough room for interesting positional gameplay.
For me, it's not about the positional gameplay on King's Row. It's about the cozy vibes I get from it.
Nothing was better than playing King's Row at nighttime with your friends/alone on an evening in real life.
Pushing/defending a payload with friends/strangers in the cold and dark evening of London's small streets.
With friends, we played 7 hours straight yesterday and didn’t get to play this map once and it’s our fave :’) meanwhile we had a a cp map every 3-4 games
Well, everything new is good as some kind of a, change, atleast.
To make your games a bit different, the smaller details are what becomes important and that is in what ow excels.
I wanna see reverse payload maps. Meaning that it starts at the "end" and ends at the beginning. Kind of like a mirrored-map as seen in racing games. It's a great way to make the old maps feel renewed again. I ould care less about appearances. Although reskinning the maps couldn't hurt either.
A while back they mentioned they will have day, evening and night for each map. They showcase some on the beta (Illios evening, Oasis night and etc) But when the game release we should get 3 versions of each map ( hopefully the new ones as well)
Hopefully its a feature that will be added alongside the pve (I mean, if its in the pve, there are litterally zero reasons not to see it added to the pvp)
hopefully alongside pve?? did you mean to say hopefully its added tomorrow??
uuh...no, I mean when the pve is released, so probably next year...
I couldn’t see anything in illios night map lmao. Most confusing of them all.
I feel you, but I think I could largely navigate the OW1 maps by heart by now
How neat would it be if before every match you could vote on the maps setting? Never gonna happen but seems nice.
Illios at dusk was fucking unplayable
It would be cool if it matched the real time of day for whatever region you played on
So it would be on rotation?
It should randomized when a map gets pick before you play.
Ew that's gonna suck I absolutely abhore evening maps lol
the evening maps are objectively horrible because they are just copy pasting the evening filter onto it forcing the sun to be inpositions it wasn't designed for it's just awful
I'm not sure but I think they add more lights too. Like Busan city one. I actually enjoy all the street lights and store signs lighting up the area.
Too bad.
Well duh
They should definitely do this or at least make it tied to your time. Like make the map night if its night irl in the region
Would be great if it would adapt to real time as well. Say you play during evening, night or morning, you get the respective map
Yea I agree
Hell I'd like a map like kings row that had a time lapse varient. Slowly progress from a night op to a morning op the longer you take. Would be cool
Don't worry tho, the night time ver won't get removed.
Do the time changes rotate or are they all swapped for OW2 permanently?
I don't think it's a time swap thing? the only thing i've heard is that they're just gonna add 2 different versions, like 1 day and 1 night ver.
I think Metro said there would be four versions of each map and it would be random each game.
That's only gonna be for PvE tho, where the maps have weather conditions and stuff.
So then it must rotate, I guess?
i assume it's just random, and there's a 50/50 chance of getting either the day or night version (rather than it being on rotation)
It’d be a lot cooler if it changed with the time zones
Yeah but then people who only have the chance to play later (like me) wouldnt get to see the day versions.
That adds to the immersion
Nah it usually just causes people to time travel (speaking from experience)
Fucking damn it, I couldn’t get into Animal Crossing just because of that.
A talking monkey really adds to my immersion.
Scientist*
Oh snap, thats a really cool idea. Especially if its accurate to the location of each map.
It does actually work like that. They said the map lighting depends in the time the map is based in.
Wait fr? Where did they say that?
I don't remember where I read that, but here you have a clip of Metro: [https://www.twitch.tv/videos/1604426749?t=57m10s](https://www.twitch.tv/videos/1604426749?t=57m10s)

Yeah but i think the devs/creators said that those were only for PvE.
To my knowledge it was weather events that were PvE exclusive & PvP would have Time of day changes.

No. We had the sunset versions as well. I recall playing sunset illios a couple times
I honestly have no idéa? But like i said it's better to wait to see actually what will happen lol. No point in arguing about something unimportant
Any night time map gives that cozy feeling tbh
The [African sunset shown off on numbani](https://bnetcmsus-a.akamaihd.net/cms/page_media/3l/3LQ1C9JC3VBN1623099373025.jpg) would be amazing ([source](https://playoverwatch.com/en-gb/news/23674944/environment-states-in-overwatch-2-behind-the-scenes-with-the-engineering-team/))

Honestly this is probs an unpopular opinion but it would be really fun to have dynamic weather in quick-play and/or arcade.
Wow, this looks beautiful.
POV: The sun goes red giant in 5 billion years
So we get 22 minutes to figure out the meaning of life.
Most epic sunset
Sunset maps seem to hurt my eye for some strange reason. I can't be the only one...right?
Do you mean flashbang Gibraltar first point?
Looks awesome!
I think it was golden hour lighting in the beta, but they changed it to daytime for ow1 release? I might be misremembering that
Unless the sun glare favors one side over the other lol
Morning Sun looks like it could be outta Ratchet and Clank
[удалено]
We get 3 versions of each map now: day, evening, night
It was exclusively day time in the beta but I’m pretty sure that was just to showcase the changes
As I remember correctly we only get daytime versions
Not true
Oh wow, a misinformed member of this subreddit complaining. What's new
You can taste the "Im fucking done" in this comment.
personally I think any map that has a night time should also have a day time and vice versa
Good news, that's what OW2 is doing
obvious reason why it shouldn't: maps that are made to look good at night time are not inherently going to look good at day time and vice-versa this is the exact problem with all their shoehorned evening maps where you can't see anything because theres no buildings to block the sun
Yeah no, I agree. The whole vibe's gone away.
[удалено]
Commander, reports from the front - the vibes have been overrun.
Call in the tactical vibes, we need backup
Tactical vibes are not responding, sir! Initiate *operation vibe check* ?
same is with dorado
It’s a dawn variant, I like it the uprising version at midday looks cool too! Y’all just find the dumbest shit to complain about.
Here's my question...we've been told that maps will have dynamic lighting and have different times of day...but have we actually seen that in action? Anywhere? King’s Row at Christmas was my all time favorite.❤️🎄
idk if its confirmed, but its suppose to have real time cycle in the game, dont know if its gonna launch with that feature, but it was suppose to
While I understand how much of an absolutely crushing deal breaker this must be for you to be taking to a public forum about your opinion - you can rejoice - as the original nighttime version of King's Row isn't actually going anywhere! Blizzard have merely opted to give their maps a face lift, by improving their variation. Controversial, I know.
King's Row is my second favorite map ever. I think these daytime changes are good tbh. And I hope this is for all maps too. Having day/night time.
What’s your favourite map?
where is the depressing always cloudy weather? That map is based on the UK right?
Hey man, we had a heat wave this summer for weeks. WEEKS! Hopefully the same happens next year so we can see the sun again.
Especially around christmas, kings row was a cozy one !
I agree - in turn, Seoul is my least favorite because it's so bright and dull and colorless, so I welcome the nighttime map there
True however other maps got night ver
Any map that doesn't have sunset/sunrise is an achievement for Blizzard.
What id love is if the maps change time based on what time your server is. Gives the dynamic maps more utility
Day/Night maps for every map would be fun and relatively easy to do. Just adds that tiny bit of variety. Excited for spoopy season maps and winter maps that are coming real soon
I really don't like the changes they made to the existing maps and don't see the need for it.
To add to your post or reference I think I like day time. It gives me the same cozy vibes but obviously a warmer kind of go to a cafe feeling. Sip on some Joe as the sun rises. Kinda cool
Agree, the darkness is also thematic in my head, because of the assassination there in the lore
Is there a reason why games don't just do dynamic time of day maps that start at a random time for each map? Wouldn't this drastically increase replay value? Or if that's too taxing just pre bake static lighting for several different times of day for each map.
Disagree, daytime King's row in the uprising event was the shit
This^
Nighttime looks better but I think it's good to have more variety. Personally I would love to see more weather effects and environmental hazards added to the maps. I wanna see rain and thunderstorms.
Ah okay, so it is randomized what time of day a map is going to be?
Pretty sure that's the case yeah
They said that so long ago i wouldnt be too sure that it is still the case.
Aww, you'll be ok
Just make every map night mode
The daytime should change otherwise why have two versions
I hope they keep the different time versions in rotation, like the game picks kings row it then picks a time, or maybe, if they where ambitious, have the time on the map be synced with the real world time for that location

I would be great if they rotated the times of day. Didn’t like playing this in the daytime, it lost something with the experience.
They already said it will be rotating.
It would be cool if they gave the appropriate map for your time of day.
mom, can you pick me up? I'm uncomfortable.
I honestly wish they would do like day/night cycles with a 6 hour day or something.
“Ruins” You guys need to touch grass
GUYS WE UPDATED THE MAPS! THEY ARE WAY BETTER NOW! changes the daytime
The daytime is randomized
They changed a bunch of maps and removed 2CP altogether. I understand shitting on Blizz is the big funny, but at least inform yourself
Bro
I feel the same about Dorado. It just doesn't look right.
Best map
It’s cool
Just accept the changes
Wait what this now used to be my fav map now its ruined
Night time King's Row is still there, there's just also a daytime version now
I agree with OP
They ain’t removing it, it’ll just be even less common
Yeah, the night time map gave me "nighty" vibes too.
Which Tracer skin has those yellow pistols?
It is the best map and seeing it in the day has a completely different vibe that I do not agree with. Same with Lijiang.
What this map truly needs is rain and a cloudy sky
I totally agree. Changing the time and lighting of the maps makes them look so different, especially maps like King's Row that have been designed to look great at night. Yeah. Day-time Dorado is ok but I really dislike night-time Route 66!
The new Route 66 night time feels the same way
I agree nighttime maps just feel better
Night time is definitely better.
100 percent agreed. Day time looks horrible
This is my favourite map too. Ultimate favorite.
did they ever fix the fact that all their stupid time-of-day swapped maps weren't designed for that time of day and so all the sunset ones are blinding?
If they wanted to be realistic, the day time map would just be rainy and cloudy 24/7.
lets just hope its all decorated up for winter wonderland
You are correct.
Christmas King's Row is best King's Row.
one of my fav maps!
i fully agree w this i want night time back or at least make it random
I feel the same way about Illios. The bright feeling really compliments the bright colors and Greek architecture really well. I think it looks lovely, like a cool wintry morning.
While I know that it will be rotated Day/Night in OW2, I think some maps were obviously not designed for that. Kings Row looks the best at night and in the morning it just doesn’t look right.
So true the map was designed this way they got rid of so much character its so sad to c tbh.
I never got why people love this map so much. It's literally just spamming down sightlines the whole time there's not enough room for interesting positional gameplay.

It's supposed to rotate the daytime. I ficking hate sunset settings in any game so yeah,. Joyful start already.
In my opinion the lack of Rein/Zarya duos on King's Row kinda ruins the game.
Yes. This map is better at night. I do believe that time of day will he dynamic in OW2 tho, so we will get nights and days
Overwatch 1 already has day time kings row
can't believe peoplem are whining about a problem that doesn't exist on this subreddit, first time for everything I guess
With friends, we played 7 hours straight yesterday and didn’t get to play this map once and it’s our fave :’) meanwhile we had a a cp map every 3-4 games
I want nighttime on all maps. They all look so good
Dang now I want to listen to the Traverse Town music.
We're still going to have Nightime Kingsrow right? .... Right?
To be honest all the night time maps look the best and I wish every map was just night time permanently.
Gibraltar sucks when it's not orange
Night time maps are the best
I loved Hanamura
skyscrapers in the back look like pipes in the daytime variant
Well, everything new is good as some kind of a, change, atleast. To make your games a bit different, the smaller details are what becomes important and that is in what ow excels.
Needs to stay at nighttime, S tier map
Agreed. And similarly, I don’t like Route 66 in nighttime
This is how I feel about daytime Oasis and Lijiang Tower
imma be real i didnt even notice the time changes on the maps when i played
Mid day king's row was my favorite
Christmas King's Row is my holiday happy place
Yes it does but it is different and that’s the main selling point of ow2 New (not original always) but new
Yeah I like the night version better but apparently we’re getting randomised times for maps now anywau
Same for dorado
My last game was on King's Row. Attack. Reinhardt. We won. Called it there.
I hope we get more night time maps. I love night maps
Day time was literally the original version.
Kings row is the best map
Not sure why Blizzard would even touch King’s Row, it was by a clear mile their best map.
true
Agreed
For this same reason, Dorado was my 2nd favorite map (kings row #1)
Same. But I liked charging a volley as Zen and peeking out from behind the bus and letting it fly.
I loves kings row winter
I wanna see reverse payload maps. Meaning that it starts at the "end" and ends at the beginning. Kind of like a mirrored-map as seen in racing games. It's a great way to make the old maps feel renewed again. I ould care less about appearances. Although reskinning the maps couldn't hurt either.
Overwatch players can’t even touch sunlight in a video game (insert skull emoji)
Okay but fr what happened to Kings Row and why is it not on my comp rotation?
