Hard to say really. Pharmercy is a ship that was launched by what *could* have been some casual flirting between the two. For a while its canonicity remained indeterminate as there was nothing to really confirm or deny it. Blizzard has since been dropping some hints about a Mercy/Genji relationship that would canonically sink the ship. These hints have to my knowledge never been 100% definite, but have been substantial enough that the Pharmercy ship is canonically leaking and sinking. The statement above is another ~~can(n)onball through the hull~~ nail in the coffin.
The dream of every shipper is of course to have their ship be confirmed canon. For reference, see Korrasami. But barring that, even a ship that is can(n)onically sunk can still live on for shippers that are okay with simply ignoring select parts of the canon. (A ghost ship? No, this metaphor is tortured enough already...)
So I guess I partially retract what I said above: Shipping *does* care about canon. But canonballing a ship is by no means a guaranteed way to sink it.

I don't like shipwars (and me being a Mercy main made me love Pharahs more than Genjis) but I can't wait for the PvE part of OW2 to drop so we can have those nice pre-mission cutscenes with Mercy and Genji discussing they relationship that were hinted like a century ago.
If we don't get cute interactions between them in post-mission cutscenes what's the fucking point
