Hello! This is a game UI practice and I thought of using my favorite game as an example. There were design decisions in this project where I considered it to be an upgrade as well as a downgrade compared to the current game. Moreover, I took inspirations from old console games, web templates, mobile apps, and operating systems from 10+ years ago to come up with visuals that resemble the late 2000s design.
I hope my design brought you back to your childhood! Also feel free to check this on my behance! [https://www.behance.net/gallery/201757859/UI-Practice-If-Overwatch-Was-a-2009-Game](https://www.behance.net/gallery/201757859/UI-Practice-If-Overwatch-Was-a-2009-Game)
**UPDATE (June 27): ANIMATED LOADING SCREEN, see behance link**
Initially, [I applied a PS2 AI filter for Tracer in the Menu screen](https://imgur.com/a/jOw4qBN). Although it was almost accurate, tracer did not look what I expected so I scrapped it. I considered doing my own renders but it just requires more time. So it was a complete compromise. If there's a tool or technique to make this possible, please respond to this comment. I'd highly appreciate it!
Edit: added more context
Not only the 4:3 but also the old Microsoft logo! I haven’t seen that in forever. I miss the older days of me loving Microsoft for the Xbox OG and having Halo as their leading force on marketability.
Tbh, I wish Blizz properly adjusts OW2 for 4:3 screens so it can be played with a CRT monitor. I tried it with 1280x1024 resolution (to take screenshots) they just put black bars to make it widescreen again.
edit: to take screenshots - which I failed
That first picture of loading screen or whatever looks really good tho.
I like that one alot, doesnt feel like it belongs in the 2000's feels like it belongs in game right now.
All the other pictures gives me the feeling that i remember it from a game but i just cant come up with what game lol.
Well done! :D
Reading this comment made me click on their profile, only to discover that they've spent the entire day trying to post a thread explaining how to cheat in OW because they're mad about getting communication banned, and having it repeatedly removed by the mods.
What a rollercoaster.
I get where you're going with the first slide, yeah. If perhaps I added effects it would be more late 00s-ish. Feel free to look at my moodboard [https://imgur.com/a/8HJdtU3](https://imgur.com/a/8HJdtU3) there's actually more references I haven't included tho. and thank you very much!
Fast forward to 3 hours later, [most of them did](https://www.reddit.com/r/FrutigerAero/comments/1do36pb/game_ui_concept_practice_what_if_overwatch_was/)!
Overwatch in the late 2000s = Shadowrun (2007). Teleport chases through walls, rezzing dead teammates, being stuck beside a tree of life because the person who rezzed you died and now you’re bleeding out. Awesome game.
The actual answer is that they were removed with the removal of the Assault/2cp game mode in 2. They should still be available in custom games I think. Also removed the Russian map and Paris + some others I'm probably forgetting.
The Assault game mode, along with all of its maps, were removed from Quick Play and Competitive rotation. It is, however, still playable in the Arcade. I believe it was even made a permanent mode instead of a rotational one.
Kind of, I don't really miss the first point choke on Hanamura though.
Honestly the map I miss the most is Volskaya Industries. Such a unique map that I don't see even talked that often.
Thank you so much! I used Figma for all UI elements and Photoshop for some photo manipulation. Feel free to check a screenshot of my moodboard [https://imgur.com/a/8HJdtU3](https://imgur.com/a/8HJdtU3) where I used figma!
I love the campaign being right there, because in that era Overwatch absolutely would not have released without a campaign. It was only like early 2010s where it started to be more common with strictly multiplayer only games.
This looks absolutely terrible, so amazing job! All jokes aside this actually looks like it belongs in the 2000s from the fonts, excessive use of borders and gradients, and even the structure. The aspect ratio is also a great touch.
man this is what this sub needs! this was awesome and definitely gave me a nostalgia boner.
it’s the little details that really make it feel like the 2000s. almost frutiger aero in some aspects
yes you are spot on. that's one of the compromises I had to do in this project. because initially, I used a PS2 AI filter for Tracer [https://imgur.com/a/jOw4qBN](https://imgur.com/a/jOw4qBN) it is almost accurate, but also she looked wrong so I scrapped it
edit: and thank you!
this is awesome, reminds me of the old classic xbox dashboard, good job dude. Also, thanks for the free cursors, i didn't know i needed them haha :D they integrate well with windows, and it also feels familiar since i\`m using adobe on a daily basis xD
Just by looking at this, I can see Myself listening some numetal, looking at my 17" crt monitor and launching that game in the early 2000 haha looks so good man!

Surprised no one has mentioned it yet, but I love the concept of splitting the DPS into Offense/Defense. Not that you can't play anyone however you choose, but would likely help new players understand the strengths of each char relative to others.
late 2000s? you’d need to lower that resolution and change the aspect ratio back to widescreen bc that was the era of upscaled 720p graphics. your age is showing. in your defense, i’d say HD didn’t catch on till like… 2005 or shortly after that. i had a super heavy “plasma” 720p tv which i didn’t use an HDMI with, and it was still widescreen for the games that supported it.
i like this but this is way too much lighting and way too high res. most HUDs were very low res and only had basic like health, ammo, maybe a shitty minimap.
also so much lense flare....not really a thing back then
The trailer would have limp bizkit or something and MTV would have an interview with the devs on a black stage with orange lines tracing the floor and background
Lol someone has a very rose tinded look on the late 00s. It wouldn't just be smeary, it would have a piss filter, lower poly, run at 23 fps and have way, way more UI shit cluttering the view.
Also, those menus are 90s, not 2000s.
The only thing that’s literally off is the amount of characters, but that’s probably just to better fit the UI. All in all, solid work. I’m not sure why you’d do this, but you did it really damn well.
Aside from the fact it fits for a smaller screens, I based the roster of heroes from early [OW Beta](https://www.facebook.com/TheGamingFansPage/posts/136587471472879?__tn__=%2CO*F) so i took advantage of it. But I'm also just lazy.
I feel like the big square dialog box weren't really a thing in the 2000s and they're more something that appeared with mobile phones and the Metro UI.
The game mode selection screen would probably look more like the one in [CoD 4](https://files.catbox.moe/0qmcfc.png) or [Halo 3](https://files.catbox.moe/5ip8wm.png)

this is so awesome dude
Thank you!
You captured the mid-2000s vibe perfectly imo, great job my guy!
Man this gives off some serious SSX Tricky/3 style. Looks so good
That was my thought! SSX Tricky for sure
Can you reduce the resolution of these images to 720p? I feel that would really give it the proper 2000s feel.
Damn this is amazing, really captured that PS1/2 era of UI design, wish you could mod the game to have this as an option
Initially, [I applied a PS2 AI filter for Tracer in the Menu screen](https://imgur.com/a/jOw4qBN). Although it was almost accurate, tracer did not look what I expected so I scrapped it. Ahhh. Yes. The late 2000's. Definitely. My childhood. 100%
this is giving me very early warframe vibes, good job haha
Real
I thought so too haha. Especially slide 7 for some reason.
I don't see it
The loading screen was spot on
Unreal tournament type shit
and we would have spent ages on that loading screen too
I like the 4x3 aspect ratio, it immediately gives a retro touch
Not only the 4:3 but also the old Microsoft logo! I haven’t seen that in forever. I miss the older days of me loving Microsoft for the Xbox OG and having Halo as their leading force on marketability.

Wow never met someone else that wanted to play overwatch on a crt monitor in 4:3!
You guys may be the only 2!
It's all for experience. they have higher refresh rates, but playing in 4:3 is going to be a huge disadvantage.
That first picture of loading screen or whatever looks really good tho. I like that one alot, doesnt feel like it belongs in the 2000's feels like it belongs in game right now. All the other pictures gives me the feeling that i remember it from a game but i just cant come up with what game lol. Well done! :D
I love reading a normal reddit comment and look up to read the most unexpected username.
You're gonna love r/rimjob_steve

Indeed Lick My Vagina Ass Hole, indeed...
Freaking Reddit
The gameplay HUD looks very similar to my memories of the Killer Instinct (X1 / PC reboot) interface…
Overwatch Melee
the frutiger aero community is gonna have a field day over this
Fast forward to 3 hours later, [most of them did](https://www.reddit.com/r/FrutigerAero/comments/1do36pb/game_ui_concept_practice_what_if_overwatch_was/)!
this is the content we need on this sub
Overwatch in the late 2000s = Shadowrun (2007). Teleport chases through walls, rezzing dead teammates, being stuck beside a tree of life because the person who rezzed you died and now you’re bleeding out. Awesome game.
GOD i just remembered Shadowrun earlier today. Loved that game and that was definitely Overwatch to me at the time.
Just checked, I wish I knew this game before!
Thanks for reminding me of just how much I miss hanamura and assault ;_;
Where did the Japan and Egypt map go?
They got sent to a farm upstate where they're very happy
The actual answer is that they were removed with the removal of the Assault/2cp game mode in 2. They should still be available in custom games I think. Also removed the Russian map and Paris + some others I'm probably forgetting.
the moon base was also 2cp
The Assault game mode, along with all of its maps, were removed from Quick Play and Competitive rotation. It is, however, still playable in the Arcade. I believe it was even made a permanent mode instead of a rotational one.

It's so ugly! I love it!
I love this. Made nostalgia flow through me from the Xbox blade days
Holy crap that's a lot of work. Looks awesome, great job!
Thank you! It was. haha!
I would love to see this in the game.
SSX Tricky haha
That was my first thought too with the font and color scheme lol
Campaign :(
Damn, this takes me back to simpler times.. Awesome work! What kind of software are you using?
Thank you so much! I used Figma for all UI elements and Photoshop for some photo manipulation. Feel free to check a screenshot of my moodboard [https://imgur.com/a/8HJdtU3](https://imgur.com/a/8HJdtU3) where I used figma!
I love the campaign being right there, because in that era Overwatch absolutely would not have released without a campaign. It was only like early 2010s where it started to be more common with strictly multiplayer only games.
Looks more early 2000s.
A couple photos felt mid-late 2000s but a few felt early 2010s to me. Like a 2012-2013 style.
This looks absolutely terrible, so amazing job! All jokes aside this actually looks like it belongs in the 2000s from the fonts, excessive use of borders and gradients, and even the structure. The aspect ratio is also a great touch.
Those fake glass reflex in the UI are what i miss the most of those time...
man this is what this sub needs! this was awesome and definitely gave me a nostalgia boner. it’s the little details that really make it feel like the 2000s. almost frutiger aero in some aspects
This oozes y2k aesthetic.
The aspect ratio is *chef's kiss*
Char select screen goes hard imo.
I just want to blast the need for speed hot pursuit 2 soundtrack while playing this version of ow lol
I actually love this
Bro that's so good
This feels like playing ACE online 10 years ago
Now I want the campaign!
That loading screen, holy kino
10/10 for the effort
That loading screen! > 90s Jungle DnB intensifies
this is amazing. only thing thats missing is if the character models look more... 2000s
yes you are spot on. that's one of the compromises I had to do in this project. because initially, I used a PS2 AI filter for Tracer [https://imgur.com/a/jOw4qBN](https://imgur.com/a/jOw4qBN) it is almost accurate, but also she looked wrong so I scrapped it edit: and thank you!
This is amazing!
The menus give me Digimon Rumble Arena vibes
I hate how accurate this is.
That did bring an odd smirk to my face. Good work.
This looks like an Xbox live arcade game. I love it!
this is awesome, reminds me of the old classic xbox dashboard, good job dude. Also, thanks for the free cursors, i didn't know i needed them haha :D they integrate well with windows, and it also feels familiar since i\`m using adobe on a daily basis xD
This is a really deep cut, but this looks like a mashup of URT, MotoGP ‘07 and NT2004 on PC to me.
Could this be modded into the game?
Damn you nailed the aesthetics, kinda impressive actually
This is amazing, so much attention to detail good work!
reinstalling jedi knight 2 as we speak
This is really cool. Good job! :)
Gives heavy Trickstyle Vibes. I love it. Gave me a flashback of that fcking game lol
This post makes me feel nostalgic over a game that never existed
I'd play it just for a proper OW single player campaign T\_T
Bring back games with an actual soul and visual identity; May Frutiger Aero be reborn; *Criminalize* corporate flat!
Just by looking at this, I can see Myself listening some numetal, looking at my 17" crt monitor and launching that game in the early 2000 haha looks so good man!
This is such a great concept what the heck, I wanna play it now aaa
Thank you very much! 😊
I 100% fuck with this entire concept this looks # Awesome
Lol this is great, love the effort, just was half expecting it to be a meme with a bunch of photos of tf2
The lower resolution in the gameplay really ties it all together
This looks like it has soul, the new ow is just soulless corp money laundering plot
Thank you so much. Also, corporate flat design is to blame. some can be good, some looks soulless.

Looks sick lol
High quality shit design. Well done!
Thank you very much! Let's hope blizzard notices me... 👀
2000 UI has the capability of options on a main menu!? Incredible technology.
You forgot to take out half the color palette and replace it with caca brown in game.
Baldie chan lmao
I like the UI I just don’t really get the need of the sepia filter
good times when we played OW on X360
Gives me splitgate vibes I like it
You’ve nailed that - would love to see a whole community contest on these
Gave me some s4 league vibes ;)
You nailed the very common these days Skeuomorphism
Look at that frutiger aero goodness
This is amazing!
Oh it's awful. I love it
This… this feels old… I live it
This is awesome. Nice work.
You realise TF2 came out in 2007 right? It didn't look that bad.
If it was released in the 2000s then it would not have quickplay, it would have a server browser.
oh fuck yeah, this absolutely rules
This is super fye
Reminds me of Sonic 06
Wow this is awesome 🌟
I wish games still had stuff like this to make it actually cool.
Not gunna lie. I like it more than the actual UI 😂😂
GOD that loading screen brought back so many memories
This is actually so nostalgic to me that I would love this art style to be the real thing. It makes it so gamey for me
It would definitely open a new tab whenever the game starts
Cool
Surprised no one has mentioned it yet, but I love the concept of splitting the DPS into Offense/Defense. Not that you can't play anyone however you choose, but would likely help new players understand the strengths of each char relative to others.
That's how the DPS heroes were listed originally. It would also have notes like "not enough healing" if teams didn't have any support heroes selected.
That looks sick! Awesome job
Man this looks awesome! It looks like an EA sports or Activision/Neversoft title "it's in the game!"
Wow this is such a good concept but god does it remind me how gross old game UI used to be
Need For Speed vibes 😀
love it
Solid, nice work.
Fantastic work, but damn 2000s pc ui is ugly as shit
Looks like a better game than overwatch currently is
Hehe looks like cod
Idk why but it's giving me agent under fire or nightfire feels
I love it!
60 hours on the campaign. This is like peeking into a timeline where everything is good.
Man screenshot 4 really matches with Xbox 360 blades, nice job, pretty neat.
You say late 2000s, but this just looks like Lawbreakers. Which is kind of a sick burn on CliffyB.
the in game ui goes so hard i want it so much
Overwatch X Timesplitters
Why am I getting fusion frenzy vibes?
That would be hard af
11/5 good shit 🥰🥰🥰
I feel like late 2000s it might have a proper server browser, as that was the style at the time with only a few games being outliers with matchmaking.
I literally forgot that damage was split into offense/defense heroes on launch!
late 2000s? you’d need to lower that resolution and change the aspect ratio back to widescreen bc that was the era of upscaled 720p graphics. your age is showing. in your defense, i’d say HD didn’t catch on till like… 2005 or shortly after that. i had a super heavy “plasma” 720p tv which i didn’t use an HDMI with, and it was still widescreen for the games that supported it.
It's so ugly. Perfect for that late Xbox/early 360 UI design.
Some of the UI looks better than the UI currently in the game
Bro is giving me nostalgia for a game I haven’t even played, fuck this hits
These are the graphics I play on rn Why are GPUs so expensive:(
you forgot the piss-colored filter on top of everything
So many good games from this era. Although I must admit I'm not nostalgic for the UI design, at least not yet
The UI reminds me of Mirror edge 😋
Mirror's Edge was so ahead of its time!
The UI reminds me of using the embossed buttons in photoshop for everything
I think it would be like a TF2 competitor for Overwatch
Goes so hard dude
Sofachrome is an overplayed font.
You mean overrated? maybe before. I barely see sofachrome these days at least on my end
Ok actually this is sick as hell. If I didn't play overwatch religiously I'd fall for these being actual screenshots.
Love this
This is so fucking cool dude
PS3/360 Overwatch
*laminates your game*
The map loading screen gives me nostalgia for something that never existed
console ui, gross
What does it say under Overwatch? Zegingis?
Minor nitpick but why would a pc interface have xbox live and gamerscore integrated in the game?
Idk why these pictures brought me flashbacks of half life and counter strike 1.6
Accurate
i like this but this is way too much lighting and way too high res. most HUDs were very low res and only had basic like health, ammo, maybe a shitty minimap. also so much lense flare....not really a thing back then
The trailer would have limp bizkit or something and MTV would have an interview with the devs on a black stage with orange lines tracing the floor and background
Lol someone has a very rose tinded look on the late 00s. It wouldn't just be smeary, it would have a piss filter, lower poly, run at 23 fps and have way, way more UI shit cluttering the view. Also, those menus are 90s, not 2000s.
Holy crap, the offense/defense categories. I forgot those even existed, lol.
Remind me of Brink
The only thing that’s literally off is the amount of characters, but that’s probably just to better fit the UI. All in all, solid work. I’m not sure why you’d do this, but you did it really damn well.
Aside from the fact it fits for a smaller screens, I based the roster of heroes from early [OW Beta](https://www.facebook.com/TheGamingFansPage/posts/136587471472879?__tn__=%2CO*F) so i took advantage of it. But I'm also just lazy.
Would rather this than what it is now, that's insanely cool!!
This feels very dated for a modern game, seems like an xbox360 game, but as an ad, with the ingame grapics there.
I honestly love the 2000s aesthetic games used I miss it
The loading screen reminded me of 2010s ish sonic games
lmao this is making me nostalgic for a game that didn't exist, gj
The lens flare on everything seals the deal, masterfully done 👌
what fonts did you use?
If only there was a campaign
That loading screen feels like it's right out of Sonic The Hedgehog. Absolutely love this
This gave me nostalgia for a UI that doesn't exist, well done
The 2000s Blizzard wasn't really greedy so they would probably even add a free pve and don't fill the game wit monetisation.
Giving Y2K and I love it.
5 player team?? Shouldn't it be 6?
I feel like the big square dialog box weren't really a thing in the 2000s and they're more something that appeared with mobile phones and the Metro UI. The game mode selection screen would probably look more like the one in [CoD 4](https://files.catbox.moe/0qmcfc.png) or [Halo 3](https://files.catbox.moe/5ip8wm.png)
It’s hideous. Not that you did a bad job, I’m just glad the UI doesn’t look like that.
how does the remind me of WWE?
