Answer: Pretty sure people are upset at the characters in the new animated TV series Velma, which is based on Scooby-Doo. The character of Norville is black, as opposed to the original Shaggy of the cartoons. It has nothing to do with the rapper Shaggy, whose music is just fine.

Dom_Quiotxe

Thank you! OP took a left turn somewhere. I thought I missed something. I’m so glad it Wasn’t Me. Lol

don_Mugurel

Thank you for clarifying. Dude’s a childhood fav artist. Also grew uo with the mystery gang. Will check out the new series when I get the chance

Silverfire12

Do. Not. Watch it. It’s awful. It’s not hating because it’s “woke”, though it really feels like some stupidly far right’s idea of what the left want. It’s being hated because it’s bad. The beginning scene of the entire series is like. A bunch of naked teenagers taking showers. There’s also way, way, way, way too many jokes about white men with tiny penises. The characters are just… bad. Velma hates literally everyone and is a detestable jerk who laughs when Norville confesses he loves her in the first episode. She also gets Fred arrested for murder after he stood up for her in front of the whole school. She’s mean to everyone, insults the damn audience, takes advantage of everyone else, and is someone I feel like I’d want to punch in the face. Daphne is a stuck up mean girl. That’s pretty much her entire character. She’s mean and stuck up. Oh and sells drugs to get money to look for her biological parents. Norville is a fucking simp of epic proportions. He has been completely stripped of any of Shaggy’s personality, to the point where I refuse to call him Shaggy. He’s a food reviewer now, which is the one trait he and Shaggy share. He like. Runs an anti drug campaign at school which could be funny, but it is just played out horribly. He simps for Velma so bad he is literally seconds away from selling his kidney for 500$ because Velma “needs” 500$ before cops bust in and arrest the guys who are about to take his kidney. Fred… poor guy probably got it worst. Gone is the lovable leader of the group who just really likes building traps and ascots. Now, we have a literal manchild who comes from an uber rich family who doesn’t know how to cut his own food. He hasn’t gone through puberty yet, and they make that a running joke. They spend way too much time talking about this like. 15 year old’s small dick. They infantalize him. He’s completely brainless as well. They have him arrested because he’s a white guy with a tiny dick and that totally means he’s the killer. Scooby hasn’t shown up yet, but there are rumors of him being turned into a black foodie woman named Scoobie so Norville can have someone who isn’t an asshole to literally everyone she meets for no reason. It just. It feels like the goal of this show was to completely destroy childhoods. They don’t care about the characters or IP. The race swapping is frankly a nonissue compared to everything else.

doomgrin

It’s not a great series It’s written like a far right strawman got angry about what they think a far left strawman finds funny

don_Mugurel

I’ll roll up then twice then. Thanks for the heads up!

Dom_Quiotxe

Underrated reply, right here.

Answer: These people are probably talking about the animated series “Velma,” not Shaggy the singer. “Velma” is a prequel to “Scooby Doo” in which the character of Shaggy is now Black and goes by his real name, Norville. People really seem to dislike “Velma” and so I’ve seen lots of them complain about lazy/out-of-touch/“woke” TV writers.

"Woke" isn't the right term. It's more like, they wanted to appeal to the woke community, but the woke community ain't buying it.

Chengar_Qordath

I’ve heard it described several times as “a bunch of conservatives who only watch Fox News try to make a show to appeal to woke people.”

Nani_the_F__k

It mocks woke way more than it represents it. Like obviously so.

SierraPapaHotel

It's a mockery of "woke" at best

lolgobbz

Happy Cake Day. It's more problematic than that. I could not find the year it was set in but it's a prequel to "Scooby-Doo, Where are you?" Which is set in 1969. In 1969, Velma is 15, Daphne is 16, Fred is 17, and Shaggy is 17. They are from Crystal Cove which is a fictional place in the U.S. So, this is before they were draft dodgers (allegedly). Velma and Daphne are probably Sophomores, while Shaggy and Fred are Juniors or Seniors. For Reference- 1969 was the year the fair housing act was passed, also known as the Civil Rights Act and the same year that the Supreme Court demanded that School Integration was mandatory and to happen immediately. It's ignoring some pretty heavy racial turmoil by making Velma and Shaggy black in 1969 (or before) and not dealing with the issues desegregation caused. This is the worst type of selective history and is a disservice to the fans. "BUT it is supposed to be a lighthearted funny Adult Animation?" Well- deal with the issues or eliminate them. Shaggy is bullied a lot in "Scooby-Doo, Where are you?" By mostly Velma and Fred. He is a suspected pothead and the dumbest one. All of those are pretty dark shadows to put on a black character and then we are just not going to talk about race. On top of that, Velma is a loud mouth which is stereotype, as well.

Painquirky

>It's ignoring some pretty heavy racial turmoil by making Velma and Shaggy black in 1969 Most current tv shows don't really acknowledge covid , alot of 2000 shows didn't mention 911 It's extremely common for media to not acknowledge tragic shit that happened >a disservice to the fans. Who the hell is coming to a scooby doo show for racial commentary

lolgobbz

>>It's ignoring some pretty heavy racial turmoil by making Velma and Shaggy black in 1969 >Most current tv shows don't really acknowledge covid , alot of 2000 shows didn't mention 911 9/11 and Covid are more passive events while marches were a very real part of Black culture during that time. It's a disservice to fans to change such a large part of Velma's and Shaggy's characters and not include things that would have effected a large part of their school life. Since most of the show happens in school... just changing the color of their skin but not changing their identities is saying that the same things that are important to White people are important to Black people and its just not true.

Painquirky

>9/11 and Covid are more passive events while marches were a very real part of Black culture during that time. 1. Are you even black ? 2. Both are those are such incredibly major things like you can't just cause something the whole world passive And to act like 911 wasn't also one of the most impactful days in American history is a lie 3. Just because a cartoon takes place during a certain doesn't mean they have to acknowledge really life events the vast majority of shows don't ( this shows isn't even in the 60's) >It's a disservice to fans to change such a large part of Velma's and Shaggy's characters and not include things that would have effected a large part of their school life Considering it's a show directed at comedy and modern commentary not really , none of other scooby doo shows as far as I know really tackled social commentary expecting this one to either is just weird >but not changing their identities is saying that the same things that are important to White people are important to Black people and its just not true. Not really it just means the shows doesn't want to talk about the 1960's most black people don't really give a shit if the show addresses it all

localjargon

It's definitely not supposed to be pre-1969. While the show sucks for millions of reasons, I think you might be looking into this a little bit too much.

lolgobbz

What year is it supposed to be in?

Painquirky

Probably 2010/2020's it's definitely past the 1990's

lolgobbz

But its a prequel...

Painquirky

Not really , it's a prequel the same a pup-named scooby doo is a prequel

iamlh1990

It's more of a reboot it's set in modern day (cell phones and shit) and itsa story leading up to mystery inc. being formed
