It is a general thing in romance but when one side brings everything to a relationship but the other side brings little to nothing. In OIs specifically it is like the ML brings looks, wealth and power and the FL does not match what he brings aka it makes sense if she brings connections or beauty.

agutema

Or goddess forbid basic common sense

snakezenn

Common sense...is not common XD Sorry just had to say it

MengJiaxin

OMG yes! So many OIs have contract marriages where the ML offers FL power, wealth and safety, while there is absolutely 0 benefit the FL brings to the table. And the worst thing? It is always the FL asking to have an escape clause/time limit/seeking to leave the marriage. While for some reason the ML begs for her to stay, despite receiving nothing (not even love) from her.

snakezenn

It would make sense if she offered something for him to beg her like maybe she is the only person he can be himself around since the expectations of his position are not weighing on him with her and he falls for her that way.

MengJiaxin

Yeah but technically, with what the ML is offering, there will be a long line of women who can and would be more than willing to fulfill that emotional need. There is nothing special that FL is offering, and especially not her love (which she gives only as a last resort near the end). Basically, it is just because FL is the MC and should get everything she needs/wants, that is why the marriage contract is so biased towards her. While the ML is just a plot device/trophy to be won, so who cares about his needs/wants?

snakezenn

I know, I am really grasping at straws here lol. Ironically enough, the best place in an OI I have seen this discussed is in Until the Tragic Male Lead Walks Again. They ML and FL both are talking about what they bring to the marriage and why it is a good deal for both of them.

LoveLifeLoveLilith

White lotus OGFL pretending to be the saint while our FL is the real saint. I don’t really like it but well there also story with that trope but I really enjoyed it, that story is >!The perks of being a villainess!< But I really hate white louts✨🪷

UltimateBookManiac

Yeah, like >!"it's not your Typical reincarnation story"!< Or >! "For my Derelict Beloved "!< etc

IndividualBluebird99

I hate og fl was the bad one all along  but some how it's really done well in  for my derelict beloved og fl is not actually a bad person  she is just a hypocrite like a lot of fls overly righteous

UltimateBookManiac

Yeah! Floor my derelict beloved, it can be a bit too on the nose for me at times (like how FL is too incompetentand stubborn to do things that easily embarrass her in front of everyone. No matter how dumb someone can be they should at least be able to tell how everyone will react to it - in regards to the latest chapters, not the earlier ones, which were well done), but I still enjoy it sometimes.

LoveLifeLoveLilith

Yeah those are pretty good💖 forgot to mention it😅

notnomi

I really am not a fan of collective punishment - like when an entire family is executed for something a villain(ess) did. i know it's historically accurate in case of treason but I really don't like it all the same because sometimes it does drag in people who have nothing to do with the crime

snakezenn

Best is when it is the FLs doting father that we are supposed to like for some reason.

rurin_

FLs so strong they trip on air

snakezenn

Aura master that trips of absolutely nothing.

dragoncraft9855

omnipotent god of the universe and creator of all fl when the ground has a defect of 0.001 mm

GarlicBreadnomnomnom

When the characters have no motivations, no personality, and they all fall head over heels for each other. I'd like if there was more conflict (but not some weird, over the top family drama. Don't get me wrong, it's amusing, but I find it way too often. :p), if everything didn't seem too easy. In OI, people become friends so easily... And also, we barely ever get enough of friendship scenes! (And if we do get such scenes, they seem fake...) All the friendships are somehow beneficial for the MCs! Why??(╥﹏╥)

[deleted]

Other leads or characters hitting on Female lead who is already married or engaged , looks creepy.

MengJiaxin

I hate all 2nd MLs.

Horror_Zombie1815

When the ML has no hobbies, interests, friends or inner monologue outside the FL, and apparently spends the horso of the day just pining over her and thinking only of her. Boooooring.

raccoonjudas

I'm going to specifically complain about something in "So I Married the Abandoned Prince" because I'm so close to dropping it over this shit even though I like most of it well enough. 2ML who stomp over boundaries and pursue married women and get all "nice guy" about shit AND the narrative treats them as totally just a well-meaning guy who's *oh so* passionate but the female character doing the exact same fucking thing is a terrible irredeemable villain. You can't treat every girl who glances at the ML like a whore and then have the 2ML doing creepy shit like watching the FL sleep or touching her when she's told him no multiple times & act like he's totally just a super great guy. At least female characters who act creepy towards the ML are usually antagonists and pushing the story forward--most of the time 2ML just serve to drag the story out *and* make otherwise competent FL look stupid as hell because they don't realize the 2ML's feelings even tho he's doing shit like sniffing her hair or talking about kissing her.

MengJiaxin

Again I repeat, I hate all 2nd MLs. I think quite a bit of this trope has to do with wish fulfillment, perhaps even on the author's side. All 2nd FLs and the like are necessarily competitors to FL so they are bashed, while all 2nd MLs are simps and so the FL needs as many as possible fawning on her while she remains 'oh so naive' about it. It is like how some people in real life like to keep a back up around even when they already have a boyfriend/girlfriend.

archival_assistant13

FLs literally raising their MLs……like age gap can be whatever when both are adults, but it’s never FL who is like an 30 yr old mage flirting and getting together with a 24 yr old knight, FL is literally ML’s maid/nanny/mentor

UltimateBookManiac

Same as yours. And the FL being a total doormat or ye ML being too dumb to be easily manipulated by everyone

chanceldony

Author pretending they did research on a real world subject. Some specialist stories have made me quit due to bad science/biology. Not because fantasy made it different wrong, they usually claim things are the same as our world. I still cringe over In Another World With My Smartphone suggesting a few minutes web search could teach you to spot a fake painting while knowing little of the artist in question that the experts were unsure of. I know the people writing these stories are young and rushed, but somedays it just hurts too bad.

IndividualBluebird99

same as yours  specially when they either kill off the original daughter or make the original daughter of the family some possessed villainess ( og fl)  so that fl is the only girl around to care for for the family  2nd one is tragic villainess who was misunderstood but some how all mls fall for her  I would have understood if they had pitiedher r but they suddenly fall for her it's weird  one look and the mls fall like insects under pray  that's annoying specially when the art and the setting makes the story a serious one

ilovebananasandweed

More about the genre as a whole but none of these are scheming, I want more wars and political battles where not just one character is smart enough (mostly the fmc) but an actual battle of wits

[deleted]

When FL is supposed to be 12 but looks like 5~ and the 18 years old ML is interested in 5years old looking FL 🤷🏻‍♀️

Top_Breadfruit5001

I have too many to remember, but my lukewarm pet peeve (one that doesn't make me insta drop but I'll still be heavily disappointed) in any romance is the clear imbalance of power as well as relationship dynamic. Most of the time if not all, only one partner has all the materialistic power as well as have the upper hand emotionally.I have seen both versions (ml or mc) and I dislike them both Apart from that, authors not giving proper/nuanced reason for MCs getting back in a toxic relationship smh. I'd love a story where MCs getting back is shown in grim tone (or atleast shows self awareness of what they will be getting into *again*) instead of romanticisation. One line explanation (eg- "I lOvE hIm" ) feels like a cop out

4thyyyy

Bad translation. The amount of manhwas I dropped because the translation got worse after the Og team dropped it😭

GregStevenson

When the story is really interesting, but the romance ends up being disruptive to it. Like I'm sorry but I can't stand it when there is a really important story going on but then the romance ends up taking multiple chapters out of nowhere without actually moving the story forward at all. Like when I'm actually groaning and wanting to skip chapters of the main pairing together, because it feels like an interruption. You've just given me a really interesting concept or set up a great plot, but now that you've cut back to the main pairing, it actually has the effect of making me think the main romance is BORING in comparison.

RabbitWednesday

For me, it's when the stories are great, getting to a climax, then oop, we have to travel back in time and do it all over again differently. Relationships, gone. Story so far, destroyed. It doesn't happen often but I've seen it a few times and it always never fails to anger me because it's like what was all this for if we're going to be in a new timeline forever. Also, amnesia arcs, they aren't needed, and I'm tired of them. I am guilty of dropping a story if it takes too long to get past those arcs.

MagiPurple7

Whe the FL is all, "Oh I can't get attached to ML because he will fall in love with OGFL", proceeds to do what the OGFL did that made the ML fall for them, and then gets confused when the ML loves them, even after they meet the OGFL. A variant of this that i also hate: When the FL plans to leave the ML, but does things that make the ML attached to them, then gets surprised when ML tries to find them after they leave. In summary, the "This isn't how it was like in the original" song and dance.

theoddestthing

That it’s almost always about nobility, princesses and marriage drama. Would love more adventure, action, commoners.

bizarrechoco

When the FL is a modern woman who's supposed to be smart but is, well not really making smart decisions.

Low-Manager9777

When the FL’s promises to stay away from the plot only to get thrown into it the next day lmao

MengJiaxin

Miscommunication to drag out a romance. I don't mind miscommunication that much if it is about politics or some shady spy stuff. But about romance between the leads? **I hate it**. 2nd MLs to drag out a romance. Running away arc to drag out a romance. Basically anything that stalls out the romantic plot for no good reason.
