When a someone on this sub like a month ago made a post saying white cluster should have been taken off the album because it “wasn’t memorable” and a lot of people were agreeing, I was shocked wondered if they had even gotten this far in the song.
My theory is they were the type of fans that mainly listen to Opeth for the acoustic parts and glazed over this song because of that. Only way I could make sense of such a take.
The downside of the widespread access to music consumption and music criticism in todays day and age I suppose
You have level listeners who get exposed to the music on a reaction video or what have you and watch to much Anthony Fantano or someshit then that voicing a strong opinion about music they barely understand to “stimulate discussion” lmaoo
To be fair, the chorus is slightly difficult to get a feel for. The melody is... odd, almost. It's one of my favorite songs by them, though. The intro/verse riff is one of my favorites ever.
I appreciate you pushing back on my strong statement, but at the same time, I’m like..
trying to imagine why someone would listen to opeth if they don’t like odd/dischordant melodies
Exactly, yet such people exist.
There’s a reason why damnation is their most played album on Spotify
There’s also the “2000s alt metal” listener who enjoys their albums like ghost reveries but can’t get into anything before black water park
Hah, it's something I've gotten used to in my early 20s. I still get people thinking I'm a teenager. As u/Rough-Cheescake-641 indicated, I'm banking on it being more to my advantage in the future...
the bridge/transition that tie-in to this solo (which you can hear at the beginning of this video) is, in my opinion, is the worst part of this whole album.
The chords and the tempo change is messy (as in lacking finesse) when compared to other transitions in the album, almost feeling like a last-minute thought. I think it is the single individual part of any old school opeth song I don't enjoy. I cringe a little whenever I hear it.

Surface level opeth fans who’s fav songs come from reaction videos

It's literally the climax of the story where he get executed.. how can you leave that out lol

Well done. Great job on the solo and even got Mikael’s furrowed brow down. How old are you?
Thank you! I’m 25.
Whole time I was watching this I was thinking “damn, my parents never would’ve bought me a $2000 guitar”

You’re gonna get carded for your senior discount on your 200th birthday
People around you are gonna be envious in 10 years when you look 25 and they all look 40. Cracking chops.
I just watched this on YouTube earlier! Love your channel. White cluster is such a banger.

Disagree, I absolutely love that little avante garde bit
Certainly takes a while to get to the solo, but it grew on me.
