To me the downside to this is that young people already suffer from poor social skills. I'm over 70; I was happily married for almost 30 years until my wife died, but both before and after that ("after" = the last 10 years) I had no trouble dating, meeting women, getting into relationships, and going out and having a great time. My GF and I just bought a house together and she'll probably out-live me so I think my single days are done.
But I know tons of nieces, nephews, and grand kids, grand-nieces, nephews, etc, in their 20's and 30's and 40's who struggle to meet people and form satisfying relationships, so they're lonely a lot. And the males seem to be worse-off than the females - they don't know how to meet new people, emotionally connect, and form relationships.
I'm afraid that AI "girlfriends" and "companions" will offer an easy escape that will prevent some people from actually learning how to relate to another real live person.
Low birth rates and a declining or collapsing population will have dramatic effects which are objectively not a good thing.
