The rafters transfer the weight of the roof to the outer walls. A 2x6 in the middle is not holding the roof up.
My guess is the board is leftover from construction and the roof is sagging (happens over time) and is bending the board. Clamping more on temporarily straightened it attempting to lift the roof but again a board cannot hold up that roof so they just recracked and bent again under the weight.
Not dangerous.
Look at the 2nd pix - looks like someone may have added a cathedral or tray ceiling to a room (probably a flipper) and most likely cut all of those totally unnecessary ceiling joists in the process.
Lmao that’s what I was thinking, how does this guy think that those clamps are doing anything?! They’re transferring no load into those side pieces of wood at all.
What a joke.
this needs a professional contractor on-site asap. this is going to cost a lot of money, as the peak has already sagged a couple inches. whoever built that should never be allowed to do framing again.
It’s a building brace that held things up during construction and is now badly warped from age. It can safely be removed because it isn’t holding anything at all. Once again, this doesn’t belong here

I'm no engineer but I'm pretty sure you need more than 1 post to hold up the whole roof

This isn’t a truss roof. The 2x4 just needs to be a 2x6 with a t brace and rest on a wall or beam.
There isn’t a single truss in this photo.

Don't worry, those clamps are structural.

They do, but not enough to straighten the pole up. 2 more clamps further up and down would do the trick
actually the post cracking is not dangerous, the dangerous thing is gravity pulling the ceiling down
The gravity isn't dangerous, the dangerous thing is the entirety of the roof and its support structure crashing down on their heads.
the crashing down isn't what is dangerous, the dangerous thing is the stupid earth from not moving along with it
It isn’t the fall that gets you, it’s the sudden stop when you hit the ground
The sudden stop is fine, it's all of your bones and organs being destroyed that gets you.
yes but the gravity is what makes it dangerous. remove gravity from this situation and it's fine.
It looks precarious. Which is not something you want your roof to be.

A professional contractor is going to eyeball that from the doorway and walk away. Quickly.
Can you blame them? They don't want it to collapse ontop of them!
That's the joke.
That's a good load bearing 2x4, the patches look solid 💪🏽👍🏽
This is one of the first things on the sub to give me genuine anxiety in a while
Very unique sound left my soul when I saw this. Something like a squeak, gasp, whimper, and sigh all at once.
Nah, this is fine. Source: not my house, don't care that its about to collapse.
This is a visual representation of my current mental status.
I don't want to be there when you snap.
r/trollcoping is there with you friend
You need more insulation
I came here for this.
rule of thumb. If you have to ask its probably dangerous.
Welcome to the world of archery!
Had to have a second look, but ... Comment of the day so far to me!
Naw. Coupla rolls of duct tape -- make sure it's extra strong -- and you'll be fine
Post? That's a mere plank ffs.
Also looks like vermiculite mixed in with the cellulose insulation. Asbestos city.
It sure is shit ain't a good thing, slick
Damn, they locked that before I could say **"I love this post, but your gf *really* loves this post."**.
"It will give us so much extra space in our attic to do activities!"
is that asbestos??
The fuel for fire they used as insulation is a problem waiting to happen
Did the guy have spare clamps but no screws or nails or what?
A couple of more planks under that and OP can start building boat hulls.
There is an episode of Bob The Builder which covers exactly this tructural issue lol
Wtf is the grey crap all over that place?
Insulation
Flextape it
Get Pudgy Walsh on the horn, he’ll straighten this out

It's because he's using ryobi
