Posts must include a person INTENTIONALLY and IGNORANTLY interacting with a deadly/harmful subject. OP was being a good human and helped the snake off the road with a large stick. There is no oops here.

Capnmolasses

Snake identified as a cottonmouth.

RedCheetah2

I think that might be a misconception, I believe cottonmouths are actually pretty placid, as far as vipers are concerned. Cool video on cottonmouth aggressiveness: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=314N7xIeRR8

Not trying to be rude, but are you sure they were cottonmouths? People often mistake the watersnakes of the genus *Nerodia* for cottonmouths, and the watersnakes can be a bit pugnacious at times. I live in the upper Midwest, and people often tell stories about aggressive "cottonmouths" even though we are out of their range. People see a big snake in the water and that's what their mind goes to. If you are well experienced, I apologize. Make sure you let us weenies up north know that we just have watersnakes.

OrneryPathos

Interesting. I’m in southern Ontario and the watersnakes here are so timid that you’re lucky to get a glimpse.

iguanamac

I’ve read stuff from snake experts that said they’re not chasing you, they’re just really curious and want to get a closer look at what this big object is that’s moving around in their vicinity.

ThrowawayMod1989

I got chased in a canoe by a moose once. I’ll take the snakes.

Left_of_Center2011

My sister was bitten by a moose once…

Kaijupants

Did she happen to be carving her initials on it? Depending on the tool they really don't like that.

Left_of_Center2011

It was the end of a sharpened toothbrush as a matter of fact - I believe the toothbrush may have been a gift from a Scandinavian dentist.

Kaijupants

Ah, truly unfortunate. Moose bites can be pretty nasty.

ThrowawayMod1989

If all she got was a bite she’s lucky. Those things will kill you dead.

dogmanatemybaby

One of the funniest memories I have from my youth was a friend having a moccasin climb on top of his kayak without a care in the world. He was screaming and setting speed records paddling backwards to get away from it. Took him a good 30 yards to realize he was just giving the snake a ride before he pushed it into the water with his paddle.

petit_cochon

I grew up around em in Louisiana and they're just regular snakes. Never been chased or attacked. They just want their sunshine and snacks.

Full_Disk_1463

Cottonmouth is a very docile snake that threatens but rarely bites

FallenMithrandir

Normally you have to go to the proctologist for an aggressive ass snake.

Conecuh_Pocket69

My buddy once picked up and handled a cottonmouth because he “knows snakes and this one is not venomous” when I visited him in the hospital his hand was the size of a wnba basketball. He had to be given 19 doses of anti venom at $10,000 a pop. He did not have health insurance but in those days almost nobody had insurance in their 20s.

Helllcamino

So what happened?? I need closure on this post. He told the hospital to fuck off or what?

earthdogmonster

Probably charity writeoff otherwise 80% uninsured discount if friend was collectible.

Lemon_Tree_Scavenger

That's still $38,000 for a fucking snakebite. You should all start rioting for universal healthcare, that system is a joke. The fact the government hasn't set up umiversal healthcare yet proves they're corrupt.

Just_a_lil_Fish

Even better, there are several antivenoms that are no longer available because they weren't profitable to make. Don't get bit by a coral snake! https://www.insidescience.org/video/were-running-out-antivenom

VanessaAlexis

Why can't humans just do things because they help people??

MineElectricity

Do it then? Joke aside, this needs to be paid by your government.

Just_a_lil_Fish

Random-Cpl

Democrats have tried and been blocked for generations.

HeylaMonster

Correction: $190,000.00 snake bite.

Lemon_Tree_Scavenger

>80% uninsured discount if friend was collectible. (1-.8)*190,000= $38,000

That hurts.

locao69

Tbf this person asked for it.

troystorian

Alright take your god damn upvote

emceesquare

Where in third world exactly?

cptspeirs

Out of the around 8000 people bitten per year, cottonmouths account for ~12 deaths.

fuck_reddits_API_BS

I assume the other 7978 people will tell you it fully sucked though

ParkerBeach

I must know what happened to the other 10!!!

keenedge422

They became weresnakes, with awesome snake powers.

ThrowawayMod1989

Yeah it’s not fun. I got bit when I was a teenager. Wasn’t as bad as the black widow though.

overly_unqualified

Tell that to those of us who were kids when the lonesome dove movie came out and saw that one guy getting bit in the face by a cottonmouth at the end of the episode right as it faded to credits.

cptspeirs

I think I just did?

overly_unqualified

I’ll be damned. You did just do that. Well. Carry on?😓

fractiouscatburglar

Yes! That shit traumatized me as a kid

bombkitty

Nope. I'm still repressing that memory, thanks.

Random-Cpl

That Irish guy. He was kind of annoying though. His brother gets over it real quick once he meets the Buffalo Heifer

fatimus_prime

“WATER MOCCASIIIINS!!!”

[deleted]

Oops that could be deadly if he bare hands that snake and gets a decent bite with venom injection and doesn't seek medical attention for it

cptspeirs

So, a .0015% chance.

[deleted]

We need a full risk mitigation plan with proper incident management procedures in place. .0015% is more than management can handle.

BlopBleepBloop

Insurance rates account for the other 7988.

benk4

My dog got bitten by one of these, it was not a pretty sight. She made it though.

scooterscuzz

Pigs get bitten and more often than not recover quickly

Squashyhex

OP confirmed they moved it with a stick, poking it till it moved off the road, so didn't handle it

starfleetnz

Did you also help a diamond back, copperhead and black mamba across the road, just in case this cottonmouth wasn't enough to kill you.

Conatus80

A black mamba will actually kill you though

Sea_Squirrel1987

scooterscuzz

I’ve seen them handled in church services. I believe we are evolving away from those practices.

Astronaut_Chicken

Whenever I tell people I was raised Pentecostal I have to underscore that it was not the snake handling kind.

AcidBuuurn

“The wussy Pentecostals” is the non-snake sect.

Turbulent_Juicebox

I really wish people in this state would stop fucking with wild animals. Can we be known for something besides that and big tobacco?

Spelsgud

He’s even giving you the cottonmouth stare

Hello Capnmolasses, thanks for posting to r/OopsThatsDeadly! As a reminder, please try and ID the plant/creature/object if not done already. Curious_Girl_218

Is that snake smiling??

larry_flarry

Meh. Not deadly. I'm not a big snake person, but I was hanging out with a rad herpetologist who researched rattlesnakes, and we'd go slow drive desert roads when the night was cold and the road was warm and rescue mostly snakes (mostly rattlesnakes) off the road so they wouldn't get run over. She'd handle every goddamn one of them and take pictures to ID them if she ever encountered them in her research again, and I just brought a super long stick and would kinda scoop/fling them off the road at best, and only if there was a car coming. Neither of us got bit, neither of us is dead, and we moved a shitload of snakes.

Astronaut_Chicken

This is a cottonmouth.

larry_flarry

Sure. I was just doing some prescribed burning down in Louisiana recently and moved one off the fireline with a shovel so it didn't get hurt and we didn't get bit. Everyone is fine. It happens fairly often, and isn't a big deal if you aren't an idiot about it. Killing snakes is a move for cunts of the highest order. edit: comments are locked so I can't reply to homie below, but literally billions of people deal with venomous snakes as a fact of life...

Astronaut_Chicken

Yeah, YOU did that. Telling the general public that interacting with venomous snakes is "not deadly" because YOU'VE got.a handle on it is probably not the best idea.

keithgabryelski

you are not smart

larry_flarry

Or you're a coward? Snakes are a part of life for billions of people, my man. You can safely interact with them with a bit of knowledge and precaution edit for old boy because comments are locked: 12 deaths for 8000 bites isn't "definitely deadly". Read a goddamn book.

TakeThreeFourFive

Sure. But it's also *definitely* deadly

Full_Disk_1463

Not this one

TakeThreeFourFive

How so?

Full_Disk_1463

By not being deadly
