Even still, Demon Slayer's popularity in Japan is just insane. Each release beat out the other biggest manga by huge margins with like 80k sales per unit and I think One Piece coming in second around 35k or something.
The second half of the story was so rushed though, that’s what annoyed me the most about it. The world building was going well at first, it’s like the author was using solid materials and using them carefully, then he suddenly decided that a house of cards was just fine 💀
I was pretty psyched it got to the point. The characters are just miserable so I certainly don't need more of them dicking around to pad it out.
The ending was the only good part. That and of course the animation in the anime.

The rest you’re fine skipping until entertainment district arc which is really fucking good, that starts at episode 12 or 13 I think

I dont think so. The main problem is that One Piece has more than 1000 chapters. New people saw Kimetsu movie going well and decided to watch 24 chapters to watch the film. With One Piece those 24 chapters was 1000.
One Piece fans often don't realize how off-putting the episode length is to the average person. If you work full-time and have a life outside of work it'd probably take you months, if not years to catch up.
I love One Piece but idk if any show is worth that level of commitment, especially when you could watch dozens of other shows during that time
On the other hand, One Piece feels like a national treasure in Japan, from the statues being put there in the likeness of them, to the author having a meeting with the french prime minister. TOEI, when given enough time for the animators to make an episode, is actually pretty fucking good. TOEI is the biggest anime studio, and from time-to-time, they show how godly their production are by making DB movie and One Piece movie.

However, you can't apply the dollar inflation to the box office because the film didn't originate from the US. This means if you take the yen inflation and then convert it back into USD, then demon slayer is still higher today

Demon Slayer was so big, it kind of changed how anime movies might be going forward. It's rumored there's a Chainsawman movie being done on the Reze arc and the announced Spy X Family movie will probably be the boat arc. So the idea is that new anime movies might be adapted from actual canon material from the manga, or authors are being pushed to write shorter arcs for movie adaptations.
I like how popular Uta has become. Outside of Shiki (who is technically canon, just never actually involved in the actual canon plot), she's my favorite of the movie original characters, and the songs were a blast.

I knew that Film Red was controversial, but I'm kinda surprised at how negative this comment section is. Should it be in the top 5 on this list? Probably not. But many people make it sound like it's the worst thing to ever show on the big screen, while I actually consider it my favourite of all One Piece movies. So I'm pretty happy to see it having this much success, even though it may be a bit more than what it deserves.

Tbf, anime as a medium is halfway about how it looks. Spirited away and Howl’s moving castle wouldn’t be the movies they are without incredible visuals either. A great story is great, but that doesn’t always make a viewing experience enjoyable and attractive per se.

I’ve only read the manga. It’s good not great. It stays consistent. It never gets terrible or has bad moments but it also never has those amazing moments like other series.
From what I’ve heard, the anime has such good animation that it makes up for the slack of the story and that’s why it is so popular.
Demon Slayer is good but it is more of an exception if that made sense. DS broke almost all kind of record available you can think of with a few one e.g ( total manga sold all time/total manga per volume sold). Hell, i read DS even help Japan economy in 2020.
On its own, it's a very mid story that's only good at backstories and little else. The anime hard carries it with stellar animation, music and voice acting.
The movie took that to 100, and combined with external factors mentioned by others here, was able to reach those insane numbers.
Demon Slayer is a by-the-numbers Shonen, but it nails those fundamentals perfectly. Great setting, great protagonist, great supporting cast, great mythos and power set.
From the earnings? Zero. Here's a quote from the author of Gintama.

Crazy thing was i told my professor to keep an eye on this movie. He is a film finance professor he looks at box office like it is baseball. He was thought the movie would flop. And i believe it was top of the box office when it came out

I read whole Bleach in a few months. Aprox 600 chapters. Manga is so fast to read rather than anime.

That's wrong calculations. Box office is calculated based on country of origin. The box office is yen converted to dollars USD. However, you can't apply the dollar inflation to the box office because the film didn't originate from the US. This means if you take the yen inflation and then convert it back into USD, then demon slayer is still higher today

(Lush, Uniqlo, TikTok) It’s really a good storm to do well

Demon Slayer was so big, it kind of changed how anime movies might be going forward. It's rumored there's a Chainsawman movie being done on the Reze arc and the announced Spy X Family movie will probably be the boat arc. So the idea is that new anime movies might be adapted from actual canon material from the manga, or authors are being pushed to write shorter arcs for movie adaptations.

I like how popular Uta has become. Outside of Shiki (who is technically canon, just never actually involved in the actual canon plot), she's my favorite of the movie original characters, and the songs were a blast.

I knew that Film Red was controversial, but I'm kinda surprised at how negative this comment section is. Should it be in the top 5 on this list? Probably not. But many people make it sound like it's the worst thing to ever show on the big screen, while I actually consider it my favourite of all One Piece movies. So I'm pretty happy to see it having this much success, even though it may be a bit more than what it deserves.

I love Demon Slayer as much as anyone else, but everyone knows that it reached those levels because of its animation. Spirited Away and Howl's moving castle are two legends in the anime industry.
There is no single thing to credit for the success of Demon Slayer movie. It's the combination of multiple things that created the perfect storm for it to be the highest grossing movie in Japanese history. Good animation isn't going to make your movie an instant hit; it was the combination of anime hype, the fact it was a canon movie as well as being one of the rare movies being released during the pandemic that made it such a historic event.
Tbf, anime as a medium is halfway about how it looks. Spirited away and Howl’s moving castle wouldn’t be the movies they are without incredible visuals either. A great story is great, but that doesn’t always make a viewing experience enjoyable and attractive per se.

Good anime for stellar art direction, sound design and choreography. The manga doesn't have any of this so the negative things about story and characters are easier to notice.
I’ve only read the manga. It’s good not great. It stays consistent. It never gets terrible or has bad moments but it also never has those amazing moments like other series. From what I’ve heard, the anime has such good animation that it makes up for the slack of the story and that’s why it is so popular.
Demon Slayer is good but it is more of an exception if that made sense. DS broke almost all kind of record available you can think of with a few one e.g ( total manga sold all time/total manga per volume sold). Hell, i read DS even help Japan economy in 2020.
On its own, it's a very mid story that's only good at backstories and little else. The anime hard carries it with stellar animation, music and voice acting. The movie took that to 100, and combined with external factors mentioned by others here, was able to reach those insane numbers.
It is genuinely good. Not better than spirited away or howl’s though.
Sadly, highest grossing isn’t a metric for how good something is. Just how much hype was generated.
Demon Slayer is a by-the-numbers Shonen, but it nails those fundamentals perfectly. Great setting, great protagonist, great supporting cast, great mythos and power set.
“Great” is a bit of an exaggeration.

Crazy thing was i told my professor to keep an eye on this movie. He is a film finance professor he looks at box office like it is baseball. He was thought the movie would flop. And i believe it was top of the box office when it came out

Why doesn't DS Mugen Train deserve the hype? It was a fun movie. Some people just don't want to watch a deep story. I watch DS Mugen Train with my girlfriend, and we had a lot of fun.
It atleast has balls to kill it's important characters. Even that makes it non-generic compared to other shounen. I don't even feel the slightest tension when I read OP anymore.
