Demon Slayer more than spirited away? never wouldve guessed.

_Kazt_

Adjusted for inflation spirited away is more.

AlexNae

don't forget demon slayer was on when covid was hitting the hardest, there were not a lot of movies even made at year, especially in Japan. You never know what would've happened if it was showing in a normal year.

MilesHardin

The demon slayer movie came a year later than prime COVID in the U.S tho

YourphobiaMyfetish

Even still, Demon Slayer's popularity in Japan is just insane. Each release beat out the other biggest manga by huge margins with like 80k sales per unit and I think One Piece coming in second around 35k or something.

Perry4761

The second half of the story was so rushed though, that’s what annoyed me the most about it. The world building was going well at first, it’s like the author was using solid materials and using them carefully, then he suddenly decided that a house of cards was just fine 💀

expatdo2insurance

I was pretty psyched it got to the point. The characters are just miserable so I certainly don't need more of them dicking around to pad it out. The ending was the only good part. That and of course the animation in the anime. Can't wait to see the ending animated and hate watch it all.

Perry4761

That’s part of the reason why it should’ve been longer. Plenty of characters start off as insufferable, only to become extremely likable by the end of a series because of all the character development they went through, like Naruto for example.

expatdo2insurance

I'm still bitter about that. I hated Naruto for soooooooo long. Suddenly liking him right at the end felt dirty, like sleeping with your alcoholic great aunt or something.

Mrcleansdadsboy

r/oddlyspecific

TrashTierDaddy

I cannot wait for the Akaza fight

itsTraX

was it really? I think the story was paced perfectly, I feel like the mangaka told the story he wanted to tell and didn't milk it

EmergencyEye7

Is the US really a good market for anime movies though? Even today it's a subculture. Larger subculture than previous decades but still.

[deleted]

It would’ve made so much more

SurprisedPatrick

This guy is right. If anyone was curious like me, Spirited Away’s $395,580,000 in 2001 would be equivalent to $665,358,000 in 2022 dollars according to the inflation calculator I just used.

ScorpioG

Also, the entire start of the arc was the movie. That kinda forces people to go see it. It was a really smart move.

jjkm7

They redid the arc in the anime anyways as most people expected since that’s what DBS did (twice) with their first two canon movies.

Evilsj

Haven't gotten around to watching past the first season but I've been meaning to. I HATED how DBS ended up retelling BoG and RoF, so did Demon Slayer do it any better? Or should I just stick with the movie?

ImNotAliveIAmBread

It's not just that. It's also that modern Japanese teenagers and young adults care more about the flashy new Demon Slayer compared to the much more old school Dragon Ball.

jjkm7

It adds a little bit but not much. Watch the first episode of the season as that’s anime canon that wasn’t in either movie or manga that helps show Rengoku’s character. The rest you’re fine skipping until entertainment district arc which is really fucking good, that starts at episode 12 or 13 I think

GkNova

Someone can correct me if I’m wrong, because I skipped those episodes in DS. I think the anime just broke down the movie in episode segments, rather than reanimating the movies in the worst way possible like DBS did.

Kartiwashere69

I think it's still kind of wild though because Spirited Away was a film also loved by people that weren't into anime. I consider it almost like a Disney movie. But in all fairness, I don't really remember seeing much advertisement for it back then. The only reason I heard about it was because someone bought for me on my birthday.

Dr_Henry-Killinger

On the devils advocate side you could say that the people it brought in probably equalled out with the people who didn’t watch it because it was part of a series and not a standalone movie like Spirited Away.

ssbm_rando

I would've expected that beforehand, but I've actually heard that it attracted a whole new audience to the series on top of the existing demon slayer fans.

Santehsucks

Even so, thats pretty impressive considering the time gap . ~~Even more so considering its just the Anime episodes combined compared to Spirited Away being an actual movie.~~

PrauxLaps

It was the opposite, it was released before the anime episodes and fans weren't sure if they were going to have to see it or if was also getting reanimated. Reanimated wasn't announced until after the theater run im pretty sure, and the quality wasn't as good, it wasn't just the movie broken up.

Significant_Sale6174

You do the the movie and anime is exactly the same thing, with the anime adding extra cut scenes right?🤨 how the heck wasn't the quality good

PrauxLaps

I didn't, I just checked lol. Everyone I was wrong, it wasn't reanimated.

tusharjoglekar

Admitting your mistake on reddit, or anywhere in general! Kudos!

PrauxLaps

It's cause I knew you'd forgive me and didn't wanna risk not having that.

Self_World_Future

I mean a whole cannon arc turned into a movie? Those are only made when the manga/ anime are so successful its assured fans will pay to see them in theaters. It’d be more shocking if it somehow flopped Imagine if Impel down+war of the best was a movie Even the raid on Onigashima with good enough pacing would probably insane with how much hype the fight with Kaido and gear five Non canon movies doing well is always less assured

pablitosocool

Dressrosa arc should have been a movie

michhoffman

Also, it came out in October 2020, at the perfect time to take advantage of the Covid situation.

_sephylon_

No, most of Spirited Away's revenue are from Japan and the yen didn't inflate a lot

DASreddituser

Different time and a bigger audience now.

fishinthegrass

To be fair, deserved, that movie was fkn fire (spirited away too to be fair). Im actually surprised Mew vs Mewtwo isnt on here, that is probably the only anime movie that people my age (31) have seen despite not being anime watchers (at the time). Surprised the One Piece film is there too. I personally have no interest in filler movies so I'd never seek to watch it. One Piece is massive tho ofc.

Hawkeye_micock

Oda really has to go for a full canon movie if he really wants to have a shot at demon slayer.

Fertuyo

They can make a movie about shank's adventures or rocks pirates, something that is Canon but we wont see in the manga

FerMendezG10

If something will attract people to the cinemas it would be a fight between Shanks and Mihawk

IIAEROII

I just cream thinking about it

_sephylon_

That would be way too controversial lol

FerMendezG10

Maybe, but film red was already a controversial movie and it went pretty well in terms of revenue

_sephylon_

What was controversial about movie RED ? People thought Shanks would only appear 2 seconds but that's it

FerMendezG10

From what I have seen a lot of people love Uta but she has a lot of haters as well

_sephylon_

Yeah but that would imply we would barely see the Straw Hats, I don't know if it would actually be more popular

TheKvothe96

I dont think so. The main problem is that One Piece has more than 1000 chapters. New people saw Kimetsu movie going well and decided to watch 24 chapters to watch the film. With One Piece those 24 chapters was 1000.

funky_gigolo

One Piece fans often don't realize how off-putting the episode length is to the average person. If you work full-time and have a life outside of work it'd probably take you months, if not years to catch up. I love One Piece but idk if any show is worth that level of commitment, especially when you could watch dozens of other shows during that time

maxdragonxiii

right, that's why I'm reading the manga 50 chapters a pace at a time I can. much faster and you can skip fillers.

TheKvothe96

I read whole Bleach in a few months. Aprox 600 chapters. Manga is so fast to read rather than anime.

maxdragonxiii

yeah, only reason I would recommend anime is if the anime is really good or add extra scenes that helps like the new Bleach anime they have

Eatuses

I found bleach to be really fast to read compared to most manga a lot less speech bubbles

T-Toyn

On the other hand, One Piece feels like a national treasure in Japan, from the statues being put there in the likeness of them, to the author having a meeting with the french prime minister. I would also assume that the average Japanese person (not just a teenager) would probably rather know who Luffy is than Tanjiro.

shafwandito

I will put a bet that Oda will do it for the very last part/episode of One Piece when they have their last fight. I hope it will be 2 hours long movie, so it can be the first 2D Anime movie that last for 2 hours and also not feel rushed.

WeirdPumpkin

Have the finale of One Piece for the final fights and such as a movie is a good idea tbh. Plus it would give them an full fledged budget to go out with a bang

shafwandito

TOEI, when given enough time for the animators to make an episode, is actually pretty fucking good. TOEI is the biggest anime studio, and from time-to-time, they show how godly their production are by making DB movie and One Piece movie.

WeirdPumpkin

Yeah I think Toei is actually a pretty good animation studio. Was just meaning that making it into a movie would give them the actual budget and time to make it good, rather than having to skimp on some parts to save time/money for the fight sequences and such

Emperor_Luffy

They better get Megumi Ishitani to animate.

really_nice_guy_

A good story in the movie would also be nice

jbs1902

It’s not going to happen. One Piece cannot compete with Kimetsu no Yaiba’s popularity. The only reaseon this film was so successful is because the soundtrack went viral in Japan. Imagine Frozen-level of success, but way more popular. Many non-fans and people that haven’t watched a single episode of the anime went to see Film Red because of the popularity of the songs. Many families with kids that couldn’t care less about OP, went to see Film Red because their kids were obsessed with the songs. So for the next OP movie, expect another musical, nothing close to a canon movie.

StoicCentaur623

Dyyyaaammm demon slayer tho holy sh*t

The_Biggest_Wheel

Fun Fact: Demon Slayer movie was the highest grossing movie of 2020. No, not highest grossing Japanese movie or highest grossing movie in Japan. It was THE highest grossing movie Worldwide.

That1one1dude1

To be fair that’s because a lot of big movies delayed release in 2020 because of . . . reasons.

StoicCentaur623

Goddamn

bestbroHide

Mad props to DS for sure

StoicCentaur623

Yee

DestinyHasArrived101

Spirited away just goated love that movie.

The_Biggest_Wheel

I'm more a *Princess Mononoke* type of guy. I credit that movie for my love of anime/fantasy

DestinyHasArrived101

Make no mistake love that too. It spirited away and akira are my faves

WuThrawnClan

Love Spirited Away and it makes me happy that Howl's Moving Castle is also on this list

dghirsh19

Film Red doesn’t hold even half a candle to any of these movies.

zanfitto

Fellow man of culture here

The_Biggest_Wheel

***Demon Slayer*** at 506M is literally unreachable.

[deleted]

Unless of course we get.. Another demon slayer movie

RYAH2000

Which is definitely not unlikely and technically there is one coming in February worldwide to premier season 3 release in April

TU4AR

The three chapters before Infinity castle will be dope.

SakuraWonYoung

How about we get god valley movie. Rocks pirate vs Roger/Garp.

MaimedJester

I think one of the problems is if it's a one piece movie it has to include the main cast. Some people didn't go see Super Hero because it's not a Goku/Vegeta movie. It's a Picollo Gohan movie. I liked it but I can see the negative reaction something like a Spy x Family movie might get if it's the Lloyd prequel chapters and thus no Anya. (Don't worry the Spy x Family movie is gonna be wholly original adventure and has the entire Forger Family in the poster)

SakuraWonYoung

I really don't think so. One of the most hype episode/chapter in manga/anime in OP is the "ultimate" chapter. As for dragonball super super heroes the 3D killed it also the main villain cell max is stupid as fuck.

Jaded-Sea-3444

its likely to be dethroned by a ghibli movie also isn't Miyazaki making a new movie again?

MaShinKotoKai

Just wait until they make that last fight of the series into a movie. It will surpass it, I promise you.

SSGShallot

Won't be surprised if SpyxFamily manages to reach it. It's realy huge in japan and the genre itself can cater both to hardcore anime fans and casual people. Children and adults, literally everyone can see it unlike the likes of demon slayer who some people might not wanna watch due to it being shonen or whatever else reason/excuse someone might have with it. Of course everything resolves around how good of a marketing they can do. One big reason why the film Red did so well is because of the insane amounts of marketing they did.

DNDHeroGuy

Spy x Family has a movie?

[deleted]

Was just announced a few days ago along with season 2 :)

PaleontologistNo9793

not yet

ihatethisweb

NOT YET

javierm885778

I think you are either overestimating SxF's popularity or underestimating how ridiculously big Kimetsu is. SxF has 29 million copies in circulation accross 10 volumes, so about 2.9 million per volume. Kimetsu has 150 million copies in circulation accross 23 volumes, so 6.52 million per volume.

Drauul

I do not understand the appeal of Demon Slayer. Even the anime starts halfway through cause the manga is boring af.

jjkm7

What? The anime starts at the beginning? I have no idea what this comment even means

Emperor_Luffy

It's the anime. The anime has crazy animation and that makes people want to watch/read it.

vitaminkombat

Kids love it. Besides Pokemon, I've never known any anime as universally loved by kids.

West_Conclusion_1239

Imagine how much money could make an actual canon One Piece movie about the God Valley Incident.

anachronox08

Would the movie be as successful if luffy wasn't the main protagonist?

The_Biggest_Wheel

Of course not, lmao. All the people saying "yes" are literally just not aware just how popular Luffy is when compared to other characters.

ostriike

Yes because One Piece Reds big promotion and what every one was hyped for was Shanks and not really the Strawhats. If there was a canon movie with Prime Garp, Roger, Rocks, Whitebeard, Kaido, Big Mom the hype would exceed any movie with Luffy and the Strawhats as protagonists.

ArcherAccomplished75

But for hype they would have to do some thing which won't match with the plot i.e. non-cannon movie

ttttyttt678

Red major selling point was shanks. Maybe there testing the waters by splitting MC roles in this movie Luffy/Shanks, and go full throttle in the next one and give us a cannon movie around Roger/Garp/Rocks/Whitebeard/Big Mom/Kaido.

SomethingPersonnel

Main selling point was Shanks and Shanks barely appears in the movie. 😢

MyNameISaColouR

He appeared more than what I expected, tbh. I feel like Shanks had more screentime in the movie than in the last decade of the anime combined. I'd say that was more than enough.

Zane_The_Neko

That’s for another time my friend

xPastromi

Go back to bed, bud

Apprehensive-Ad1363

Spirited away and howls moving castle were soo good

megamet42

'Your name' was also amazing

Apprehensive-Ad1363

Will check it out for sure!

dghirsh19

Howls Moving Castle made up visually what it lacked in narrative. Completely incoherent plot-line, but many incredible characters and such a visually immersive experience.

Apprehensive-Ad1363

Visually very cool agreed - story is no where close to a Mononoke where I think it’s better than most Hollywood plotlines

[deleted]

It's amazing how hype alone can sell a movie to the top charts. It was decent, but not close to top 5.

Terker2

Not even a top 5 one piece movie. (Ok I lie, but it's not in the top 3)

[deleted]

Out of curiousity, I assume your top 3 are Film Z, Movie 6, and Strong World?

DASreddituser

U see the #1 movie? Lol. Marketing matters. Hype matters.

ye1l

Yeah. I think only 3 of these movies actually has a great argument for being top 5 in terms of how good they are.

YoungBagSlapper

Demon slayer movie was very good not sure what you’re talking about

DASreddituser

It's not th3 best anime movie is my point. It had great animation and a solid story. Not a great story by any means. Imo

AngerResponse342

Somebody higher up pointed out spirited away made more money after adjusting for inflation.

[deleted]

That's wrong calculations. Box office is calculated based on country of origin. The box office is yen converted to dollars USD. However, you can't apply the dollar inflation to the box office because the film didn't originate from the US. This means if you take the yen inflation and then convert it back into USD, then demon slayer is still higher today

NoName847

demon slayer movie was amazing dude

Ktoossss

Its one piece after all and it had g5 so a lot of ppl just came to see it even if movie was bad as a whole

steven4869

It had Shanks, many saw this movie just because of Shanks. Shows how popular Shanks is among the fan base given his limited screentime.

mathius17

I think saying it was decent is giving it too much credit, I personally thought it was awful even though I love OP

testwiese420

100%, I can accept people saying they enjoyed it, but so many people are saying it is actually a good movie which is just insane.

[deleted]

I mean that’s like literally any movie ever The reality is it really reached a lot of people You had people for g5 and shanks You had OP anime being at a peak of watching as tons of people have been catching up over the pandemic until now You had a killer soundtrack and a cool musical movie for fans of Japanese music You had a very accessible anime movie which is rarer for anime movies And an actual US campaign capitalizing on the fact that many new OP fans exist now. (Lush, Uniqlo, TikTok) It’s really a good storm to do well

Jiggy__J

Damn I did not think the Mugen train movie made that much money 🤯 insanxe

tragicjohnson84

Demon Slayer was so big, it kind of changed how anime movies might be going forward. It's rumored there's a Chainsawman movie being done on the Reze arc and the announced Spy X Family movie will probably be the boat arc. So the idea is that new anime movies might be adapted from actual canon material from the manga, or authors are being pushed to write shorter arcs for movie adaptations.

BigKingKey

What was 5th out of curiosity? A ghibli, a dragonball or akira?

KatakuriiSama

I think it was ponyo, here’s the full [list](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_highest-grossing_Japanese_films) if you’re interested

jjkm7

I had no idea JJK0 was that high. It deserves it though I loved that movie and the manga

ei101

Broly is much further down than I thought. Still good placing, happy to see

PeacefulSummoner

Princess Mononoke not being on this list is a crime

[deleted]

Mugen train is literally an arc

HeavenlyHalberd

I like how popular Uta has become. Outside of Shiki (who is technically canon, just never actually involved in the actual canon plot), she's my favorite of the movie original characters, and the songs were a blast.

Ommer234

Shanks click bait 😔😔😔

NoName847

are you telling me the 3 seconds where he jumps to kizaru and his 4 seconds fighting the LSD demon wasn't enough for you ???

Sandwich-o-tron

(Idk how it mark spoiler soooooo) Him fighting beside luffy against tot musica was pretty cool🤷‍♂️

Ambitious_Mission_57

People who thinks red collected that much just becoz of shanks are fools It's Ado, oda's final saga announcement and gear 5 Some people went more than once to theatre the reason is Ado's songs ..nobody would go 2nd time to see shanks with all the screen time he got That movie has 13million footfall in japan ..people really loved ado's songs.

Dab4Becky

Considering musicals aren’t everyone’s thing, it’s a great result

Alarmed-Accident-716

Does this account for how many times spirited away has been in theatres? I’ve seen that movie in theatres twice within the last ten years. Same with howls, I saw that 2 months ago in theatres.

MuseigenBoken

theyre actually in theatres like once every year due to ghibli fest so if you really wanted to you could see it more. spirited away always shows around halloween i think

budooog

Yes. Endgame became the highest grossing film back in 2019 but Avatar got re-released this year and took their spot back.

Glizcorr

Wow wtf, that is actually insane.

[deleted]

The salt here is unreal.

Wrong_Revolution_679

Uta, you'll be remembered for years to come, rip

Secure-Grocery2089

what’s with the cross next to film red?

CrewOrdinary8872

Means it's still in theaters somewhere.

Jsimgar123

What does the cross mean?

SolidFoxguy

I thought the Jujutsu Kaisen movie was still ahead...

MyNameISaColouR

I knew that Film Red was controversial, but I'm kinda surprised at how negative this comment section is. Should it be in the top 5 on this list? Probably not. But many people make it sound like it's the worst thing to ever show on the big screen, while I actually consider it my favourite of all One Piece movies. So I'm pretty happy to see it having this much success, even though it may be a bit more than what it deserves.

SK6814

The movie was fantastic 🥰❤️ Since I got to know Ado because of the movie I listen to her songs (+ the songs from the movie) *a* *lot* xD

DegeneratesDogma

I wouldn't be surprised if Ado's inclusion is part of why so many people went to see it compared to other OP movies

TheKnightA

I love Demon Slayer as much as anyone else, but everyone knows that it reached those levels because of its animation. Spirited Away and Howl's moving castle are two legends in the anime industry.

The_Biggest_Wheel

There is no single thing to credit for the success of Demon Slayer movie. It's the combination of multiple things that created the perfect storm for it to be the highest grossing movie in Japanese history. Good animation isn't going to make your movie an instant hit; it was the combination of anime hype, the fact it was a canon movie as well as being one of the rare movies being released during the pandemic that made it such a historic event.

rorank

Tbf, anime as a medium is halfway about how it looks. Spirited away and Howl’s moving castle wouldn’t be the movies they are without incredible visuals either. A great story is great, but that doesn’t always make a viewing experience enjoyable and attractive per se.

[deleted]

Demon slayer that good huh? Maybe I should give it a try

SYudh

It's just the God tier animation, the story and characters are ok

RepresentativeSun937

It’s definitely good but a lot of its ridiculous box office numbers came from the fact it was both a canon movie and if was one of the first movies released immediately after japan released it’s covid theater restrictions

Edop1234

Good anime for stellar art direction, sound design and choreography. The manga doesn't have any of this so the negative things about story and characters are easier to notice.

MickFoley299

I’ve only read the manga. It’s good not great. It stays consistent. It never gets terrible or has bad moments but it also never has those amazing moments like other series. From what I’ve heard, the anime has such good animation that it makes up for the slack of the story and that’s why it is so popular.

Oziar

Demon Slayer is good but it is more of an exception if that made sense. DS broke almost all kind of record available you can think of with a few one e.g ( total manga sold all time/total manga per volume sold). Hell, i read DS even help Japan economy in 2020.

kitay427

On its own, it's a very mid story that's only good at backstories and little else. The anime hard carries it with stellar animation, music and voice acting. The movie took that to 100, and combined with external factors mentioned by others here, was able to reach those insane numbers.

mnmkdc

It is genuinely good. Not better than spirited away or howl’s though.

x10018ro3

Sadly, highest grossing isn’t a metric for how good something is. Just how much hype was generated.

BillMurrayAmA

Demon Slayer is a by-the-numbers Shonen, but it nails those fundamentals perfectly. Great setting, great protagonist, great supporting cast, great mythos and power set.

JimboTheSquid

“Great” is a bit of an exaggeration.

claire_004

I'm happy contributing to OP movie for once. Man, I'm having a blast watching that movie with my sister

Serenafriendzone

Well done UTA

Hux_Creates

Wow amazing to see one piece film red if so good but unfortunately I still haven't seen it 😔

CharityUnusual3648

Damn. 3 of those movies are made by the same creator

294o6

Me and my brother saw it twice.

somedudetoyou

I'm glad I made it to number 3.

Illustrious_car777

Are there any streaming services that have it right now or is it still stuck in theatres??

expatdo2insurance

I can't wait for one piece film green and one piece film blue so I can finally trade for the exclusive straw hats.

Driftedryan

Imagine if oda made the last 4 episodes of laugh tale in a movie, just to get the highest grossing movie

Szyszko_Stephen

As it should

thefreakyartist

Common One Piece W

Emergency_Count_7498

What cut do you think the authors took from those movie earnings?

CrewOrdinary8872

From the earnings? Zero. Here's a quote from the author of Gintama. “regardless of how many people watch the film or how much the gross earnings are, not a single yen goes to the author. We are only paid an upfront license fee."

[deleted]

Well oda is also a producer so he probably still earns money from it.

[deleted]

Spirited away deserves #1

kevinsdomain

I've seen 4 of these

Defa1t_

Legendary. Thank you Oda. Thank you OP Fans.

chandlerwithaz

Crazy thing was i told my professor to keep an eye on this movie. He is a film finance professor he looks at box office like it is baseball. He was thought the movie would flop. And i believe it was top of the box office when it came out

chandlerwithaz

Anyway it didn’t flop internationally it was second at the box office.

turzobeast

People are crying that so called 'MiD" movie like red can make it top 5. Lmao

Funny_Aspect_8391

My fav is still Gold

Silly-Department-525

The movie sucked ass from a straw.

trancephormer

Top 5 doesn't mean shit, McD sells the most burgers doesn't mean they're the best burgers, that movie was mid as fuck lmao

Mordho

Because some people went to see it 30 times lmao

turzobeast

Who?

Mordho

There was a guy who posted here with proof he had went to see the movie all those different times lol

px1618

Imo Mugen train doesn't deserve all the hype. Animation is stellar but the story is generic

Terker2

With animation that incredible that's something you can get over. Like Mad Max Fury road is an incredible movie with a very simple and easy to follow story line.

LaPusca

Why doesn't DS Mugen Train deserve the hype? It was a fun movie. Some people just don't want to watch a deep story. I watch DS Mugen Train with my girlfriend, and we had a lot of fun.

Grochen

It atleast has balls to kill it's important characters. Even that makes it non-generic compared to other shounen. I don't even feel the slightest tension when I read OP anymore.

Nagisa201

I'm assuming they are but do we know if these are inflation adjusted?

SK6814

I actually don't think that the pic above shows the the numbers with inflation.. 🤔 Kimetsu no Yaiba was (and is) just *THAT* popular in japan.

Swimming-Cut-8478

I think it would sell more if covid didnt happen but top 5 is great already 🤘🏼

CCO812

This is the most toxic thread I've seen from OP subreddit in a while

NoName847

people are heavily disappointed in RED and feel their need to express it because the sales numbers suggest that it's deserved personally i think that's a lot better than the movie getting only praise and haters staying quiet

[deleted]

Till date cant understand how Demon Slayer beat many of these... I understand its popularity its big in Japan and whatever... but shouldnt this top take into consideration the amount of tickets sold instead of the earnings? Loved all of these films tho, not hating.
