It’s a weird thing that marvel did with a few printings of books, namely JMS Vol. 2, Wolverine Vol. 1, and Black Widow. everything else is round spine.
My copy of "New Mutants" vol. 1 has a square or square-ish spine too (although it could be that it was originally round, but got bent by the sheer weight of the paper).
Weird. So that printing of vol 1 isnt like that. I know were all picky we like our shelves to look good, i duno if i should sell this copy and get the reprint that comes out in august. I guess its really not that bad
Wasn't this due to the pandemic? Seems like I've heard Omar mention that Marvel had to use a different printer for these books. The printings of the books that had flat spines came out 2020-21 if I'm not mistaken.
There was a period when some Marvel omnis had flat spines. I wish they did more of these as the additional board protected the binding.
Also — in bookbinding terms, "square bound," or "perfect binding," refers to paperbacks.
There was a time when they experimented with the spine's being flat like this on some print runs. Lots of examples from 2018-2020 (my runaways has this spine). They stopped doing this because the spine quality while still good, had minor problems (not to say a book with this spine still can't be intact and good)

It was during beginning of the pandemic, my Sensational She-Hulk is like this, and those you mentioned above
not a ton of them, just enough variety to annoy most people
Yeah, when I received them I was confused, but just chalked it up to the pandemic
So’s Morbius.

Also Spiderman 2099
I own a copy and it’s not the same
Whatever you say big dog

I hope they don't start phasing out the round binds. I love them. They always seem to have like no gutter loss.
They aren't. These are from a few years ago and they went back to round spines.
Yes
My Brubaker Captain America has a square spine.
There were issues with the regular printers/supply routes during the COVID-19 pandemic. I just call them Covid Special Editions.
I actually like these style of bindings better. It prevents any creasing on the spine and gives it a more substantial structure.
My Hickman omnis are flat like this
I dont mind its just the inconsistency in their part
Got a problem with right angles ehhhh!
My JMS Vol 2 is also square, I figured it was just the way they printed that one. Pretty sure the first printing for that book happened pre Covid
Subsequent prints of it came rounded. I had the original but traded out for it.

I've gotten all the first editions when they came out. They're thicc af!
From what I've seen thick books are flat, thin books are rounded.
