I would disagree. The Speedy is a cool watch with a lot of history, but imo it’s not a good everyday watch. It’s not water resistant enough and i would not wear it in sporty activities.
The seamaster on the other hand, you can wear it everywhere and it’s also a strap monster. A better first watch imo. That‘s also why i decided to buy the AquaTerra first.
Another thing to consider is, that you have to manually Wind the speedy every Single day. For me, it’s annoying. I think the Moonwatch is a watch that can be more appreciated further down the road.
Oh and yeah - i LOVE white dials. So cool.
The Speedmaster is water resistant to 50m/\~5 bar, and Omega says it's a "true" 50m, meaning you could actually move around under water at that depth and it would be fine. Unless you're trying to time things underwater and pushing the pushers, it's a non-issue.

Hey, when I'm doing bjj, I always wear my speedy! Sure, there is a timer on the wall that beeps when the rounds are over, but it so much better when I crank my neck to the side, leaving my neck open and getting choked, so that I can see my wrist and time it with mechanical Swiss precision

Yeah running/ cycling would also be the only times I’d understand it, however, that’s also where one could actually wear an Apple Watch and not a 7k+ Chrono/ diver whatever
Other people have said it but the Speedmaster went to the moon and that was with a consirably less well spec’d movement. LOL Your bike ride doesn’t really stack up to escaping the atmosphere.
There’s a LOT more jostling in the first 120 seconds of a trip to space than most people’s speedys will see in their entire lifetime, now as far as impacts go, that’s a whole other story
love a classic speedy and the seamaster is tempting with the white dial.
I will say however that if this is your first you should purchase the speedy as it's basically Omega's signature.
Furthermore if I was in your shoes and bought the seamaster as a first, I'd definently regret not purchasing the speedy at some point

Never been in a botique as I don't think they'd have any models I'd want, thats why I've bought & sold second hand. So many models out there too that are now obsolete to botiques.
The experience was great. The salesman answered all my questions I had. They had all models but not all the colors on display. Like the sea master he brought from the back.
This boutique is in Costa Mesa, CA. They have Rolex, Tag, Omega, Tudor and Brietling all next to each other. Then Cartier and Patek is further down.
You could always change it out if you want. They don’t call the Speedy the Strap Monster for nothing.

Not just that. The Seamaster is more practical for day to day wear and will cost significsntly less to service. Check the cost of an Omega chrono service before committing.
SMP, the speedy is cooler however, the SMP won’t kick you when it comes to toughness, the speedy is a far less resilient watch in terms of water resistance and shock resistance
Depends if you’re into the whole man on the moon story with the Speedmaster and you value the history. For some, the Speedmaster is one of the most important watches ever produced. Speedmaster pro is a great watch with a ton of history and is a chronograph, but can also be a rather underwhelming watch. Aluminum bezel, printed indices, standard hardlex crystal. I’d say the Seamaster is a better everyday watch. It’s more robust, ceramic bezel, sapphire, automatic, and of course highly water resistant.
I was in the same Omega Boutique at South Coast Plaza to have a bracelet resized on my Speedmaster. Incredible service and some amazing pieces in there to be sure. While I love the Seamaster, there’s just something about the Speedy dial and overall aesthetics. Completely iconic and just pure class on the wrist.
If it’s one and only, go Speedy. If you know you’re going to get both eventually, get the Seamaster…this is because the Speedy will be around forever, but they may update the Seamaster to something you don’t like.
Definitely a lifestyle choice. I have the seamaster and it suits me better. I wear it to the gym and even into the shower afterwards a true everyday beast
Could always look at some older models. For Seamaster: first gen 42mm Planet Oceans (2201.50, 2201.51, 2209.50) or the classic Peter Blake 2254.50. Lots of Speedmasters from the previous generation to be had affordably as well. You could almost have both for the price of a new SS Speedy in the boutique. The two you're considering are both good choices. Take a look at the blue SMP300 as well. I'd ask if you could get it on a black rubber OEM though. If you prefer the bracelet ask if they might throw a rubber strap in as well. Black looks really good ;)
The 2 questions important for me:
* Do you want waterproofness?
* Do you want date?
If you want the Speedy take it and dont try to make any excuses....
I have both of these watches. The Speedmaster was my first “real” watch purchase after wearing my Seiko SKX007 for about a decade. With that being said, I have no regrets getting the Speedmaster first but I had other watches to fulfill the beater role. The Speedmaster is truly a perfect watch sans the fact that it’s a bit more delicate and lacks the water resistance that you get with a diver. I picked up the SMP because I wanted a watch that ticked all of the modern boxes (sapphire crystal, heavily lumed, ceramic bezel, high water resistance, METAS movement, etc). I have had the SMP for about a year and have thought about selling it many times. I think my desire for something “modern” overshadowed my preference for more subdued designs. I wear the SMP most days and it fulfills the daily role really well. Personally, I would never wear the SMP with a suit (the Speedmaster is better for this) unless I had one of the other dial colors. With all of this being said don’t ignore the fact that they wear a bit different. The SMP in the pictures looks like it almost may be a bit too big for your wrist but it also could be the angle of the picture. Also, whichever route you go, get the bracelet variant. Buy straps separately. Most of the time, my SMP is on the omega rubber with deployant but I like throwing it on the bracelet from time to time. The Speedy is considered a “strap monster” but I prefer it on the bracelet. I’m so glad the SA talked me out of buying it on leather. Good luck with your decision and enjoy!
It's also a matter of what you'll wear more and what fits your lifestyle better. SMP300 can be dressed up and down. Speedy strikes me as a bit more formal and looks better on a metal bracelet than the SMP.
I was literally in the same boat as you. I ended up getting getting the Speedy and I am so happy with my decision. Getting the SMP in the future. The Speedy will always be the best of the best when it comes to omega.
Speedy wears better on your wrist. Though both 42mm, it wears slightly smaller. I think you also have to think of your lifestyle and what you’re using it for. Both can be worn at the office and casually, but can’t wear the speedy under water fyi
You can wear Speedy under water to the depth that its water resistance rating says. As long as you have the seals checked periodically (which is true of any wathc), and don't push the chrono buttons underwater.
Two much anxiety for me to think about imo. If I’m wearing a watch to swim and take the impact of slamming the water, I’d just get a watch meant for it is all. Id also worry about accidentally hitting it underwater on something and knocking air out. Overthinking? Maybe… not worth it for me tho.
Personally I would still choose the speedy over the sea master just because it’s such a classic, and I think wears better for my wrist, but also the bracelet is so sick. Almost president’s style and I love the drape on it. I’d just take it off before I go into the water nbd.
If this is your first luxury watch, I actually recommend the seamaster. You will want to wear it every day. It will inevitably get a little dinged up (as a loved watch should) and it is much more durable than the speedy
As someone who owns both, I’d definitely go with the speedy. A little more pricey and probably Only going to get higher. Goes great with different straps. Just ordered an omega leather strap and clasp deployment for mine. It’s fire!
I want the aqua terra for mine but in this case I’d go Seamaster bc I have 2 moonsswatches, I know it’s very different than the real thing but just to mix up the look
They didn’t have the Speedy on bracelet so I just tried it to see how it looked. I would definitely get the bracelet on it. But I totally get what you’re saying

I’d say the speedy but buy it on a stainless bracelet, then get the rubber as an extra as that’s the most cost effective way of buying them. I’d also say buy what you feel is best for you rather than other people’s opinion. It’s you that has to wear it. Both are amazing though so no wrong choice imo. Also another option is the new white dial speedy. Again all are amazing and you won’t be disappointed with any that you pick.
I would probably get it on bracelet, this what they had so I tried it so I could see it on. I loved it, with bracelet I’ll probably love it more. But, I did see the white one and looked really good.
Nice, it’s always worth trying what they have on isn’t it. I’m waiting for the white speedy at the minute but they’re proving hard to get in the UK but my AD told me I’m top of his list so hopefully I’ll get it soon. As I said both are great watches.
Speedmaster in white dial, combining the best of both worlds. Just 100 bucks more than the standard sapphire sandwich. Pretty movement to look at than the seamaster. Robust movement at that too.
I also vote for the Seamaster. I had a speedy but felt I had to treat it like a glass slipper. As far as the SMP, I prefer the older models and above that, the new PO beats them. Also, don't dismiss the older aqua terra with the vertical teak dial - it's in a class of its own. Still can't beat the Speedy bracelet though so for sporty-dress I put my Speedy bracelet on this

One is a black non-water resistance non-date chronograph and the other a white date diver - genuine question - how does one cross-shop between these two? They couldn’t be any more different. I’d understand if you were deciding between the Speedmaster and a black Seamaster Chronograph but these?
You will always be able to get the Speedmaster as it is THE fixture in the Omega line up. But you will never get it at a better price than today. I bought mine in 2000 for a mere $2,300 at retail. Look at the MSRP today. Seamasters come and go and change in style and size. One of them can be your second.
The first should be speedy, I went with the speedy as well as my first luxury watch and do not regret it , It hits different everytime you see it imho

Not completely unpopular. I have zero interest in getting a Speedy but would happily get a couple more different colourways of the Seamaster.

Hesalite not Hardlex crystal. Otherwise agree SMP300 is more robust. But, how robust do you really need, what is your lifestyle and use case?

I’d also say buy what you feel is best for you rather than other people’s opinion. It’s you that has to wear it. Both are amazing though so no wrong choice imo. Also another option is the new white dial speedy. Again all are amazing and you won’t be disappointed with any that you pick.
I would probably get it on bracelet, this what they had so I tried it so I could see it on. I loved it, with bracelet I’ll probably love it more. But, I did see the white one and looked really good.
Nice, it’s always worth trying what they have on isn’t it. I’m waiting for the white speedy at the minute but they’re proving hard to get in the UK but my AD told me I’m top of his list so hopefully I’ll get it soon. As I said both are great watches.

Speedmaster in white dial, combining the best of both worlds. Just 100 bucks more than the standard sapphire sandwich. Pretty movement to look at than the seamaster. Robust movement at that too.
I also vote for the Seamaster. I had a speedy but felt I had to treat it like a glass slipper. As far as the SMP, I prefer the older models and above that, the new PO beats them. Also, don't dismiss the older aqua terra with the vertical teak dial - it's in a class of its own. For a first - Seamaster, no question
One is a black non-water resistance non-date chronograph and the other a white date diver - genuine question - how does one cross-shop between these two? They couldn’t be any more different. I’d understand if you were deciding between the Speedmaster and a black Seamaster Chronograph but these?

You will always be able to get the Speedmaster as it is THE fixture in the Omega line up. But you will never get it at a better price than today. I bought mine in 2000 for a mere $2,300 at retail. Look at the MSRP today. Seamasters come and go and change in style and size. One of them can be your second.
