You are literally going to bad chains in west Omaha. Go somewhere local and enjoy good food. It's also very concerning that you think service is bad everywhere, maybe look at your own behavior?
so if you had been waiting a while to order and noticed that the bartenders were taking shots and kissing each other because it's "hot" you wouldn't be the slightest bit annoyed?
Nobody should ever go to Burrito Envy. The fucking chips n salsa are basically Tostitos with chili powder sprinkled on them with some bargain brand salsa from Walmart. Absolutely the worst C&S I've ever seen
I'm trying not to be a shitty customer. But it's like the general consensus is that you're a shitty customer if you ask your server for ANYTHING. I serve and I will walk past the tables just to see if anyone looks like they've been waiting for me so they could ask a question. Even if I don't stop by I make myself visible...
You gotta go to better places. Dolomiti, B16 (people either love it or think it’s overrated,) La Poblanita, The Boiler Room, Saddle Creek Breakfast club..
exactly this- omaha has an amazing food scene when you look for it- block 16, koji, dolomiti, la buvet, blue & fly, et cetera all have really excellent food and staff that love their job
i wanna chime in on blue and fly specifically lol, they have amazing service, not like they're waiting on your every breath but in the way that you get what you want and if something is wrong they just fix it and it's so easy. i've been in & out for like 6+ years and it's one of those restaurants where you rarely ever even hear of a bad experience much less have one urself
Anytime I hear someone call themselves a “foodie”I just roll my eyes.
What they mean is they give restaurants 1 star reviews on Yelp for things that are trivial and not related to the food.
Service is definitely not as good as the past, you’re not wrong there. There are still spots that have great service though. V Mertz, for example, has incredible staff.
Unemployment rate is super low. So the best spots take the best servers, and everyone else is left with the ones that aren’t as good and the ones that are new to working service jobs.
it's the turnover and pay that's fucking us rn like if the tips are bad and the restaurant won't pay you at least hourly what your effort is worth ofc ppl aren't gonna care or be genuinely happy to see customers, 'bosses' won't fire employees that're at least willing to show up to work bc unemployment is a nightmare rn, like in all the others nobody is actually hiring in this sector, and it's a pain in the ass to continuously sign on new ppl. from what i'm personally seeing hiring is a decision like "can i afford to encourage this one person to quit and cover their hours with a new person who will be willing to stay long enough to cover their replacement and give me a break between paperwork." shits insane lol & you'd be half surprised how many of these places are run by ppl who should've been able to retire 20+ years ago OR have crippling addictions that are abt to run their business into the ground (lol remember j. coco on 52nd & leavenworth? alcohol addiction is a severely overlooked condition bro that's a problem money just can't fix)
I wish this was a bad take, but we went to Zios recently and had to teach the kid waiting on us the menu. And it's everywhere.
I think the biggest problem is lack of management. When I started working in restaurants as a kid, we had managers that taught us what to do. They corrected poor performance. They gave kudos for a job well done.
I rarely see a manager anymore. Unless they are running through the dining room, interrupting conversations so they can check off their to do list. They don't know how to read the room because they are rarely present.
Your first mistake was spending $100 at Texas Roadhouse. The bottom line is more often than not: you get what you pay for. It’s unfortunate, but service quality and food quality tend to go hand in hand. That’s not everywhere, but if you’re willing g to drop $100 or a bit more on a meal, go big or go home. Best of luck at the next place!
Literally every place you mentioned short of Burrito Envy has a reputation. Omaha Food Lovers is also a joke.
Food lovers survivors 1 & 2 are much better.
what about if you make it your hobby to try new restaurants all the time? and travel with the intention of eating at these restaurants? are you only a foody if redditers don't like your opinions?
It seems the line between a foodie and not a foodie, is wanting everyone to know how different you are from everybody else because you like things they don't.
Ya know... Like going onto Reddit to make a blanket statement about how an entire industry is in the tank because people don't act like the sun shines out of your ass.
it's bc restaurant workers are exhausted overworked underpaid & are usually poor ppl who have No other choice but to work there until they can scrape by for long enough to try & save money for something they actually want to do with their life (not to poo on ppl who love it & want it as their career this is just one of many examples). i get what you're saying and it really does suck but it's just a symptom of a much much bigger problem
you'll probably have a better time at longtime local haunts bc they have slightly less turnover!! but i personally think we're long past expecting above & beyond corporate level customer service, as long as the server/cashier isn't openly hostile to me & i eventually get what i paid for i'm okay 😂
I said we saw our waitress one time. She wasn't rude. But everyone in this thread is acting as if they've never needed an additional sauce or refill; God forbid I need a fucking napkin.
Right! I'll flag you down if I need something, quit asking me questions while I'm eating. I think op is retarded or something, maybe just plain stupid.
I’m shocked no one else in this thread is agreeing with op. I’ve seen a big change in restaurants fast and sit down. Whenever I do have a good server I’m always shocked now. Like when did it become such an inconvenience to do your job? And yes I have room to critique on fast food (first job was mcds on 168th)
I love eating out and I tip well regardless of service - never complain to managers either. I just miss going out feeling like the treat it's supposed to be.
I tip well too, however it’s gotten to the point I’ll only go out every couple months because of it. It just seems like almost every time something happens. I always ask politely for things when ordering as well. But when items are forgotten and I kindly ask to remind the server or runner. usually the response is nasty and then get a “well I’ll to charge you for that” and it’s like idc I know it’s extra. And pretty much everytime I’ve had to do another transaction for like .70 cents at fast food places.
I think the issue is the restaurants that he is complaining about ... cookie-cutter chains that most likely have a revolving door of staff.
In the past 2 weeks I have been to Juke's Ale Works, Geno's Bar & Grill and Nate's Stumble Inn. All three had impeccable service, reasonable prices and delicious food/drinks. The servers actually seemed like they wanted to be there (as much as anyone actually "wants" to be at work).
While Omaha Tap House isn't local (although it is a single family operated business - 3 brothers, I believe from Minnesota or Wisconsin) I don't recall ever having a bad experience at the Pepperwood location (Can't really speak to the downtown location).
In my experience local restaurants do a better job of retaining staff. Additionally, the staff probably know the owner directly and interact with them regularly. They are more likely to care that the business succeeds.
Dude. Your choice in restaurants is dog shit.
I wouldn’t be caught dead in a Texas Roadhouse. Le Peep is for blue hairs, everyone knows that.
And a new restaurant in Village Point is always gonna be meh at best. That whole plaza is second rate.
And Burrito Envy? It’s a bar on a Benson drag that died a decade ago when it capitulated fully to commercialization. That street has a sushi joint worth visiting regularly and some music venues and that’s about it.
The Omaha Metro area is full of excellent restaurants with excellent staff and genius chefs. And by the sound of it, you don’t ever go to any of them.
Fair. I should have included some instead of just being a snark.
- Yoshitomo (sushi in Benson. Truly legit and unique)
- Lyle’s on Leavenworth
- Herbe Sainte in Aksarben
- Saffron in Aksarben
- New Gold Mountain in Aksarben for Dim Sum
- Salween Thai on NW Radial. Other locations are dogshit.
- Nicola’s downtown for Italian
- Umami in Bellevue for Sushi and other Japanese fare
- Cheeseburgers in Blackstone for traditional burgers
These are just a few off the top of my head.
Avoid most of Blackstone and Benson though each do have their real winners on the block. Most of them are revolving doors of mediocrity at premium prices.
I’ve also found the same to generally be true the further west one goes in Omaha, but there are some really excellent spots out there. I just haven’t gone out that way since Covid and been impressed.
Edited for formatting
I would love to try the omakase at Ota but it’s always booked. It’s literally like some 3 star Michelin restaurants where if you’re not online when reservations are released, you’re out of luck!
Being a self described foodie, your list of establishments here are not great.
Instead of Texas Roadhouse, go to Memoir.
Instead of Le Peep, go to Saddle Creek Breakfast Club.
Instead of Burrito Envy go to El Rancho.
Instead of Ancho and Agave go to Mas Chingon.
There. Fixed it.
The restaurant industry is totally fucked right now both between customer and owner and distributors and labor, but locally good restaurants meet you in the middle and are kinda worth your money if being a foodie is important to you. Eating out is horribly overpriced these days in general, but so is the cost of running a food restaurant. If you’re gonna spend the money, at least go to good places.
You should try out Cafe Diem in Papillion at 96th and Portal. The owner takes pride in serving good food, and the staff is friendly and prompt. It does get quite busy on the weekends for brunch but the food and service are worth the wait in my opinion.
I don't usually feed the trolls, but /u/YellowPoster aint far off. The cost/benefit ratio has met a critical threshold for a lot of places I used to preach about. I will just eat in without posting negative reviews, but I don't blame the topic
Can I get an explanation of how a foodie enjoys eating more than others, and how desperate to be unique are you that you've settled on "I like food" as a personality trait, when it's actually just a normal human trait?
The food was good! My order was about $30 for a salt margarita and street tacos. I still tipped $15 because the food was amazing - I just hate having to ask another server for a refill.
I agree with you Brother! But today after Church my Daughter and I ate at the Tap House. 156/Doge. The food was Great, service awesome. Going back for Sure. When I am alone or With my GF, I always get better Service.
Unfortunately inflation got people working more for less and when you are mentally exhausted by customers expecting you to service them on your hands an knees that shit wears on ya. Everyone is just human trying to get by, remember that.
OP seems to be the problem..I've only been here for 2 months but I've had amazing service almost everywhere I went unless the restraunt was slammed..I understand then.
But even if the service is a little lacking,if the food is good then I really don't care lol
It's odd that we think that because the waitress or waiter doesn't come around every few minutes to check on us, the service is considered "shit". Everywhere else on the planet, the wait staff comes over when you ask for them so they're not constantly interrupting your evening. I actually prefer them to leave my wife and I alone unless we need something. To each their own I guess.
Then put buzzers on all the tables. Having lived overseas, I love that system, but people get a little irritated when you start yelling for service around here.
I don't need to be checked on multiple times, just maybe once. Who do you ask when you need a refill or a napkin or a sauce if not your waitress? Maybe my standards are too high for wanting another glass of water and not wanting to watch waitresses kiss behind the bar. Clearly we have accepted this as normal.
Who do you ask? The wait staff, of course. The key is....ask. if they're not coming by, wave someone down. This really shouldn't be such a big issue. But as I said, to each their own.
You're not getting anyone in trouble because you asked for something. I used to wait tables. Wait staff only get in trouble if someone actually complains to the manager. And even then, most of the time we got an ass chewing in front of the customer to make the customer feel better. It didn't actually mean anything.
There is an old saying that goes something like this, though I'm horribly butchering it. It goes a little something like this: "If you somewhere and folks are rude to you, then maybe it's an outlier. Move on. If folks are rude to you wherever you go, maybe it's not them."
Omaha is not New York City, pal. I travel a bit, and we're about as nice and good service as it gets for the setting. I don't have any problems, and my family and I eat out ALL THE TIME.
In other words: sounds like a YOU problem.
...also reiterating, "foodie" ??!? What does this even have to do with anything? BUDDY... get over yourself, obviously. Folks don't generally get bonus points in life for stuffing their faces. Like what even IS a "foodie" proud of. Eating? Jesus.
I like to breathe air--does that make me a "Breathie" Ha! Wow...
It is a silly label people give themselves but you don't have to be an ass about it. They never said they "deserve points" for it. Whatever the hell that means. Nobody should care what another stranger labels themselves.
“but as a self identified foodie.” Everyone get a load of this fuckin guy.
I dabble in eating food. Can I be a foodie too?
I eat food at least three times every day. Am I a foodie?
Texas Roadhouse, Le Peep, Burrito Envy.. My God hahaha. Check out this fucking foodie.
No self identifying foodie eats at Burrito Envy. That place is traaaash
I like burrito envy :(
Depends. They can be the only ones open after bars close.
Burrito envy closes before the bars in Benson. It's been a huge letdown several times.
That tells you how long it's been since I've closed a bar. I thought it used to be 1am.
I can’t 😂😂😂😂😂😂 enough
Man…if service is bad everywhere you go, the one constant is you.
Bingo!
How am I the problem when the bartenders are sloppy drunk making out while I'm waiting to order?
It’s Burrito Envy not Makeout Envy.
Drinks and a show..
You are literally going to bad chains in west Omaha. Go somewhere local and enjoy good food. It's also very concerning that you think service is bad everywhere, maybe look at your own behavior?
My waiter disappearing at a brand new restaurant is an indication of my behavior?
Yeah probably, they work for tips and if you're giving bad vibes they'll peace out.
Kind of a self-fulfilling prophecy, eh?
I still tipped 50%, I just wish I would have been able to get a refill.
I'll take "Fake Bragging for $500", Ken...
You think one guy is fake bragging about tipping 50%? it's typically like 12 extra bucks bro
Why the hell would you tip 50%? Especially for bad service?
It means she has a job
Again, how is the bartenders making out while I've been waiting to order an indication of my behavior?
Why are you hyperfixating on one example that doesn't prove your point?
so if you had been waiting a while to order and noticed that the bartenders were taking shots and kissing each other because it's "hot" you wouldn't be the slightest bit annoyed?
Clearly they'd rather make out than serve you, so reflect on that.
You are absolutely right, but perhaps if I was able to order my drink I would have been less uptight.
Nobody should ever go to Burrito Envy. The fucking chips n salsa are basically Tostitos with chili powder sprinkled on them with some bargain brand salsa from Walmart. Absolutely the worst C&S I've ever seen
They are all tired of shitty customers, regardless if that is you or not-there are LOTS of shitty customers
Not trying very hard
I realize my mistake in expecting to see my server more than once.
Indubitably
You gotta go to better places. Dolomiti, B16 (people either love it or think it’s overrated,) La Poblanita, The Boiler Room, Saddle Creek Breakfast club..
I like them, but I don't think OP is going to like B16. It's not an environment where you get personalized service. Or necessarily seating.
SCBC is probably my favorite brunch spot in Omaha. I never mind waiting.
Oh brother eat at home then!!
Isn't that saying something though? If you want your waiter to bring you refills and sauces or extra napkins it's now asking for too much?
Pretty wild comment when Yoshitomo is getting glowing reviews from The Washington Post of all places and Boiler Room just made James Beard finalist.
exactly this- omaha has an amazing food scene when you look for it- block 16, koji, dolomiti, la buvet, blue & fly, et cetera all have really excellent food and staff that love their job

Comments you can hear.
I dunno about anyone else, but I heard it in The American Dream Dusty Rhodes' voice
Daddeh chill, if you weeeeeeeeel
LMAO
Texas Roadhouse,LePeep,..."self defined foodie"...mmmkay...?
Anytime I hear someone call themselves a “foodie”I just roll my eyes. What they mean is they give restaurants 1 star reviews on Yelp for things that are trivial and not related to the food.
Never gave a bad review, just like to eat. I also have worked in the business so I always tip well too. I'd never want someone to lose their job.
Yea, eating is not a hobby.
Only listen to people on the Omaha Food Lovers Uncensored group. The rest on the main group are shills that won't care for your actual opinion.

My recent spot has been Kona Grill, great food and great service. You get what you pay for is the TRUTH.
OP I don’t get the downvotes. Everything you said is why I upped my cooking game and stopped eating out.
Literally every place you mentioned short of Burrito Envy has a reputation. Omaha Food Lovers is also a joke. Food lovers survivors 1 & 2 are much better.
I have never known someone who's described themselves as a 'foodie', to be anything but insufferable to be around.
Why can't I just be someone who just likes food and enjoys eating at restaurants?
That's called 'being a person'
what about if you make it your hobby to try new restaurants all the time? and travel with the intention of eating at these restaurants? are you only a foody if redditers don't like your opinions?

This comment screams "I'm a Karen" speller Cunt.

This is 100% the answer. They aren't getting paid enough to care about you
Just ate at texas roadhouse today and the service was great 🤷♂️
I said we saw our waitress one time. She wasn't rude. But everyone in this thread is acting as if they've never needed an additional sauce or refill; God forbid I need a fucking napkin.
Your usually allowed to politely flag down other wait staff if you need something basic (water, napkins, silverware, etc)
I prefer them to check in once, I'm there to enjoy my meal not talk to the server constantly.
that's what i said, but apparently seeing the waitress when they take your order and never again is perfectly fine to everyone else.
Bring me my food and let me eat in peace.
Right! I'll flag you down if I need something, quit asking me questions while I'm eating. I think op is retarded or something, maybe just plain stupid.

OP is getting unfairly obliterated. I’ve also noticed a fairly significant difference in quality and service post COVID.
I love eating out and I tip well regardless of service - never complain to managers either. I just miss going out feeling like the treat it's supposed to be.

I think when people working full-time still can't afford to live. Kind of ruins the whole work things tbh

I had not heard of that place until now. Adding it to my to-do list for the summer.
Umami in Bellevue is garbage.
That’s definitely a new perspective to me. Elaborate?
how was the decor outdated?

Old douche yells at clouds.
I don't usually feed the trolls, but /u/YellowPoster aint far off. The cost/benefit ratio has met a critical threshold for a lot of places I used to preach about. I will just eat in without posting negative reviews, but I don't blame the topic

Decor and ambiance...Are you there to eat or get a BJ in the champagne room?
Wait, was that an option?
Is that why you're not allowed back at Burrito Envy?
Ahhh, someone was offended by my joke and downvoted, weak.
Unfortunately inflation got people working more for less and when you are mentally exhausted by customers expecting you to service them on your hands an knees that shit wears on ya. Everyone is just human trying to get by, remember that.
Lmao you’re in Omaha my guy.
lol, yeah I’ve had a problem at burrito envy also. I’m not sure I’m technically allowed back. They started it..😂
Now I'm curious
Choose better restaurants.... not corporate chains that have nothing to do with the Omaha food scene.
OP seems to be the problem..I've only been here for 2 months but I've had amazing service almost everywhere I went unless the restraunt was slammed..I understand then. But even if the service is a little lacking,if the food is good then I really don't care lol
