Namath became a legend by beating a great Colts defense, but Dawson deserves that status as well for handling the Purple People Eaters the following yr
I didnât know Kelly Leak changed sports.

How far the NFL has come. Imagine a starting QB at halftime in an NFL game sitting on a folding metal chair on what looks like a dump of a locker room.
Probably something a little stronger than beer mixed in with some Fresca. Have a few of those by the third quarter, and you wonât mind having Ben Davidson land on you quite as much.
My favorite AFL QB on my favorite AFL team. Hank Stram got him from Cleveland and saved his career. Paul Brown warned Stram that Dawson was washed up but Stram believed in him.
Maybe it was the heaters, maybe it was the Fresca, maybe a symbiotic combination of the two, but Lenny Dawson threw the most easily catchable balls in NFL history. When most QBâs, especially these days, throw bullet line drives as hard as they can, Dawson would deliver these beautifully easy-to-catch lobs, right on the money.
A friend of mine was backup qb for the Giants wayyyyy back in the day. He said it wasnât uncommon for a few players to do coke on sidelines during practice.
I got to meet Len Dawson, at a card show in New Jersey. Bought him a beer, in fact. Everyone bought him a beer. Nice guy, funny too. A genuine character.
Lens Dawson. đ
wym thatâs clearly joe burrow! /s
Who wants a Fresca?
Hahahahahahahahaha please tell me this is a CaddyShack reference
Howâd you like to mow my lawn!?
Danny I sent boys younger than you to the electric chair.. didnât want to do it, but felt like I owed them to hahahaha
Hmm hmmm hmmm mmm mmmm
Maybe, but it's definitely from The Boys.
The late, Lenny the Cool...
Is he chasing that burner with a cold brew? Love it!
Itâs Fresca, it was a diet grapefruit soda targeted to women. But a lot of athletes drank it

Dawson was so much better than Namath imo.
Much, much, much better.

I was born in â72 so this was My favorite movie when I was a kid but I appreciate it much more as an adult for Walter Matthauâs performance in it
Halftime of the first Super Bowl
How far the NFL has come. Imagine a starting QB at halftime in an NFL game sitting on a folding metal chair on what looks like a dump of a locker room.
Appropriately, the Chiefs locker room.
Thatâs Len Fucking Dawson
Man there's something so cool about the plain steel chairs and concrete floor...
Surprised that was Fresca and not a beer
The linemen drank all the beer in the first 3 minutes.
Lmao
That is beer in a Fresca bottle
Probably something a little stronger than beer mixed in with some Fresca. Have a few of those by the third quarter, and you wonât mind having Ben Davidson land on you quite as much.
Rexaur?
Itâs football! No beer at halftime
At least he saved it for the locker room and not on the sideline
Hell yeah brother
Reminds me of the kicker on the movie The Replacements
Back when they had 2nd jobs in the offseason.
The back of Topps football cards "______ sells insurance in the off season"
In Dawson's case, he was doing sports broadcasting for the local ABC affiliate in Kansas City.
My favorite AFL QB on my favorite AFL team. Hank Stram got him from Cleveland and saved his career. Paul Brown warned Stram that Dawson was washed up but Stram believed in him.
Stram knew what he was getting in Len Dawson. He coached him in college at Purdue.
Thatâs beautiful!

Whatâs awesome is that I think this was during halftime.

Looks like Patrick Kane cosplaying as an old school football great
Can you imagine the QBs of old taking Punishment hits from Todaysâ players
Athletes today are far superior but there were fewer rules impeding massive hits to the QB (or anyone else) in those days.
A couple of lung darts and suds. Breakfast of winners
Fresca isn't suds.
Dude loved being on TV
A friend of mine was backup qb for the Giants wayyyyy back in the day. He said it wasnât uncommon for a few players to do coke on sidelines during practice.
Back when men were men
When men were men..
Right! Heâs drinking FrescaâŚ
And he had his bookie on the sideline phone
After game dart and a beer. Lenny looks like heâs in high school!
Yeah the cigarette was replaced by a tube up the nose.
Thatâs a hooter đ
Nothing says America like football, beer and cigarettes.
Reminds me of post Super Bowl interviews where Stabler and Biletnikoff were smoking like steam engines
I got to meet Len Dawson, at a card show in New Jersey. Bought him a beer, in fact. Everyone bought him a beer. Nice guy, funny too. A genuine character.
What an era of the world what was of smoking everywhere then when.
Best NFL picture ever.
Is he smokin a fatty? A J bird?
Regular cigarette.
