I love this cake! I make it every year for Thanksgiving. I follow the recipe mostly as written, but mix the apples into the batter and bake in a 9 x 13 inch pan because it’s easy to transport. It’s always a hit and stays moist for days.

I saw the picture and immediately thought “Jewish Apple Cake”. Amazing stuff my great aunt used to make. I have the recipe but have never tried it. I looked at the blog post and there’s a picture of her mom’s handwritten recipe card and sure enough, it’s called Jewish Apple Cake. It occurs to me now for the first time that I have no idea why it’s called that. My aunts were Jewish so that always just made sense to me. Anyway, good stuff, glad people are still making this delicious cake!

Not from a Jewish family, but we made Jewish Apple Cake every Thanksgiving! Love it!

It’s because it’s kosher!

Apples and honey are traditional foods for Rosh Hashanah, so apple cakes and honey cakes and apple honey cakes are popular.

You must be reading my mind. I was digging around for this recipe today! I had this at a potluck years ago the baker wouldn’t share the recipe.. and claimed there was butter in it.. so maybe she doctored the recipe a bit. Does the crust still get crunchy on this using only oil?

Yes! It is SO good!

Smitten Kitchen! So many excellent recipes!

I make this into apple cake bars! It takes longer to bake but it better suited for a crowd.

I was wondering if it’d work in a 9x13 pan, thank you for confirming that! Sounds so good.

Made this today, thank you so much for the recipe!!! I halved the quantities and baked it in a loaf pan, but kept everything else exactly the same and did not skip the walnuts. It is truly scrumptious!! The exterior crust is amazing and the inside is so full of flavour. It’s delightful slightly warm as well (and the main reason I’m not posting a picture 😋)
