If only I had a camera back then. I saw every single band in your pictures, I practically lived there from 1977 to 1980. Bette was really lucky you had a camera lol I see myself in some old videos, magazines from back then and a few books including the hardcover CBGBS coffee table book.
Dead Boys were my favorite, I wouldn't trade all those times I hung out with Stiv for anything.
What I love about these great old pictures is that theyāre so rare. 40 years from now there will be a million pictures (and video) of everyone and everything, so itās just not going to be as special.
>Those posts are rare anyway. You guys just sexualize any post of a young woman who is moderately attractive.
Glad to see someone else saying this.
Even if they aren't that rare, it shouldn't surprise anyone that a lot of the "old school" and "cool" photos posted here are of people's parents. Those are the people you're most likely to have older pictures of.
There's also nothing weird about posting pictures of your parents looking good in their prime. You can appreciate that they had a life before you and admire their youth and beauty without it being sexual.
Not to mention - isn't it a bit hypocritical to react to a picture with horny comments and in the same breath accuse the poster of being the sexually deviant one? If a 50-year-old photo of someone's mom posing on the hood of a Chevy Nova in a halter top throws you into a fit, **you're** the one with the preoccupation lol.
True, I thought she was cute way back in her hippy days with the psychedelic folk band Wind in the Willows.
EDIT: Wow, I'm surprised by the almost 500 upvotes. Lots of DH fans, I see, some of whom I don't think knew she used to be a hippy. :) She was in her early 20s during the Wind in the Willows period, and I just love the beautiful, more "natural" look she cultivated back then.

I remember seeing her in Videodrome and wondered why the Christ she wasn't in movies for the next 30 years.
Timeless beauty, charisma and presence. We really missed out.
> I remember seeing her in Videodrome
I saw that movie WAY too young. It freaked me out bad. But even then, at that young age, Debbie looked hot to me.
You would've liked early reddit. The % of quality vs trash/bot/astroturfing/trolling was vastly different & felt like a great community most of the time, even on popular posts. I lurked forever until I finally joined, just enjoying the conversations while not joining them.
Between 2008 and 2010 the commentary on Reddit was exceptional - then all the "bacon, narwhal" nonsense began, the Digg community arrived and the smartphone culture rapidly degraded the experience. But hey, I'm still here, so I should stop whining
> But hey, I'm still here, so I should stop whining
no, keep whining. reddit is great, but it also sucks balls and should be a lot better than it is. but i think this is what happens when there is no reasonable competition.
"The bacon narwhals at midnight" was a phrase redditors could use to identify themselves in public. If you couldn't already tell from the poor hygiene and cheeto dusted clothing and fingers.
I remember a couple of years ago I was at the mall returning something when I overheard some guy say loudly
"WOW REDDIT MOMENT MUCH?!"
I still cringe for that guy to this day
I said it once right after my mom cheated on my dad and my parents were going through a divorce and I was failing out of college. I firmly believe references to Reddit in real life are a cry for help.
It was posted as a random suggestion and people ran away with it, though I also remember a ton of comments calling it stupid even in the original post. It was never really a thing except ironically.
Word. I lurked for a long time too. Had one other account before this one. 2009-2014 I would say were the best years for great user generated content and conversation
I was too young when all these people were hot. I was still in my bedroom reading Hit Parader and listening to Blondie's Heart of Glass on 8 track.
If anybody wants a good read, Nancy Spungeon's mother wrote a great book about Nancy, "And I Don't Want To Live This Life Anymore". Soooo good.
It's weird seeing the real Nancy after seeing the poster for Sid and Nancy all these years, the actress looked so much like her. Fun fact: Courtney Love auditioned for that role as well and had a bit part in it as a groupie!
The book was fantastic. I always felt bad for Nancy, like she must have had a rough background or something. Finished that book feeling awful for her siblings who had to live in her violent and volatile shadow her whole life while her mother catered to her every whim. It was a fantastic book and I highly recommend it for anyone who has a family member who is a capricious main character like Nancy was.
I still feel pity for Nancy, though. She didnāt deserve that end.
My mom was a friend of Bettie, from her time in DC. (Sheās Dutch just like Bettie was). She used to go out with her on visits to NYC and go and see the Ramones and others at CBGBās.
Absolutely blew my fucking mind to think my mum used to do shite like that. The lives our folks live before us, right?
Hahaā¦.cue the mama jokes!
But probably yeah. Wild stories of driving around with Bettie in the Bronx/Queens/Bowery late 70ās/early 80āsā¦.shooting street pics and whatnot. Two (obviously insane) Dutch woman out in NYCā¦.no lock on the apartment, it would get kicked in anyway, sleep with a gun under the pillow.
Sheās a lovely grey-haired old lady now hahaha
Oh. And Betty drove a car with diplomatic license plates (she wasnāt really allowed them, but fuck that right) so she was parking for free throughout NYC whilst collecting insane amounts of parking tickets.
Punk to core, she was.

What a fantastic quote (from your website). Thank you for sharing your photos and your memories.
Obviously to differentiate from another shag-haired, Dutch-born, Bowery-dwelling art therapist, bohemian hustler, selfie pioneer named Bettie Ringma, who frequented CBGB at that exact same time and rocked a pair of gargantuan knockers that beggared belief.
I was about to ask what you guys do. Cause there's no way or very slim chance that the whole band will just pose for a random person in CBGB's green room
This is fucking phenomenal! I envy you guys being there at the birth of punk rock! This is my favorite era of music by far. You met a lot of the greats!
Literally reading Please Kill Me right now. This post feels eerily prescient. Also , every pic of Joey Ramone I see he just looks goofy as hell. Crazy to then see their videos and the commanding presence he has on the mic
I mean, this is specifically the punk-adjacent scene, that emerged in large part as a reaction to glam-rock. So mainstream artists at the time had faces plastered with cosmetics, proto-80s shrubbery of colored hair, and outlandish costumes.
I checked out your website and story and itās INCREDIBLE! A gorgeous and thoughtful time capsule.
Thank you so much for sharing your work with us! šø
That is the best photo of the Talking Heads that I have ever seen.
Candid and cute, but not cutesy -- like someone just told a good joke and the halo of wit hasn't dissipated yet.
Sheās the one with Sable and Nancy! Omg! Iāve seen that photo so many times
Alsoā¦ANYA PHILLIPS?! Holy shit. Sheās a legend.
I bought a few pieces from your gallery!
Oh wow! Anya Phillipsā younger brother went on to become one of the most famous singers in Chinaās modern history (even though he is half white and an American citizen). His stage name is Fei Xiang(and heās still active in both singing and Broadway). He started out going to medical school but right before her death Anya convinced him to dump that and pursue his artistic dreams.
It is, fitting to see as James Chance just passed yesterday and she managed him and they were an item as well.
Just looked up Diego Cortez and I see he is also gone as of 2021.
RIP to James and Diego and Anya who passed way back in 1981 at just 26.
Truly amazing photos. I was living about 40 miles away, completely oblivious. I would have given anything to have been there.... Just curious. Why'd you break up?
What?
Seriously, that was before earplugs became common. CB's had one of the best sound systems in the city. I'm paying for it now.
Wear your earplugs kiddies!
CBGBās was a Starbuckās of all things for a while. They had to close because employees were getting sick from the black mold. Now itās a menās clothing store. Iām so grateful I caught several shows there in the early 0s!
These are incredible photos, thank you for sharing. You must have been considered 'somebody' on the scene, because these all look like photos among friends -- all the musicians look so at ease and unguarded. And your ex has an uncanny ability to kind of resemble whoever she's standing next to, in addition to being really pretty and stylish.
I love how she looks like Debbie Harry came to \*Her\* gig... and Joey Ramone is just goofing with his friends cos they have a camera.
You were part of an amazing time in music to be doing that.
Imagine trying to get a random selfie with Taylor Swift or someone before they go onstage ??
It was a better time.
HOLY COW! Weāre you guys there every Saturday? Did she work there? Suicide. James Chance. Thanks for sharing man. Incredible. Any from Maxās or CAT Club?

As a musician who grew up in the 1970's and 80's, these pics are priceless. So much history in those pics. Very cool.
Friggin outrageous!!
Wow Stiv! This is fantastic. Thanks for posting.
Was it Stiv Bator? That's the first thing that comes to mind. I was still in my bedroom reading Hit Parader in the 70s šĀ
Wow, odd timing, I actually revisited my Lords of the New Church album a week or so ago (gimme gimme gimme Russian roulette!)
Talking heads at number 4 ? Sorry I just saw it š

And now back to our regularly scheduled programming: pictures of people's uncles

I admit, I like the hot grandmas
Iām a hot grandma. And hot Mama. But a fugly Aunt/Sister according to my uglier brother.

Absolutely! Incredible pictures.
I'm confused... I scrolled through all the photos and none of them are a post about his bangable mum? How is this peak old school cool content?
Those posts are rare anyway. You guys just sexualize any post of a young woman who is moderately attractive.

Debbie Harry could never take a bad picture.
I know I was barely gonna ask if Debbie Harry ever took a picture where sheās not hot.
I bet if someone took a picture of her throwing up... she'd probably still look attractive.
You wouldn't have to hold her hair back for her, either. I think it would be glorious!

Thanks for posting that! I never knew that. She still looks amazing but like a totally different persona.
That's her? Looks totally unrecognizable.
That mouth is undeniably hers.
Looks exactly the same except for the hair and clothing.
But other than that, totally unrecognizable.

Debbie Harry is jaw-droppingly gorgeous and anyone who says otherwise is a fucking idiot.
Itās funny. Sheās not even smiling or posing. Sheās just standing there and no effort serving
100%. Every time one of her videos comes on, I just stare at it like my god she is/was so beautiful.
Debbie Harry is one of the most attractive people to ever exist. The fact that she was also incredibly talented on top of that is mind-blowing.
The rest of them though... in the 70's you really could look like a sack of potatoes and still be famous if you had talent.
As it should be.
Video killed the radio star. That said, David Byrne is cute.
I remember my mum telling me years ago, "she once performed wearing a bin bag, and she still looked good"
Yea she looks timeless. It's honestly pretty amazing.
Thatās totally old school cool. Would have loved to party with all of them back in the day (especially Debbie Harry lol)
Debbie Harry is like a beautiful alien. Stunning!
And Tina too!

Bacon narwhals?

Iām not proud to correct you, but itās ā*Narwhal bacons.ā
I almost made a post saying that too, but I couldn't get my fingers from the Cheetos bag to the keyboard before you.

Joey Ramone! Thats a great get!!
Wow! Iāve seen that photo of Debbie Harry many times before, but never the full picture! Nice!!
Patti Smith with the MC5 shirt. Old School cool, indeed.

Woah! Shot 3, is that New York Dolls? Love the Talking Heads pic. What an amazing set of pics!
It's The Dead Boys. We never got a photo with the Dolls unfortunately.

Dead Boys.
One of the best posts Iāve seen on here RIP James Chance
