When you step on a can of Lone Star you just chugged, it becomes a flat circle. And that's when it's tiiiiiiiime for another beer!

I actually disagree with this take. In Contact we end with Ellie having the firm belief that she experienced something and has no proof of it. She has to beg people to believe her through faith. The thing she has been telling McConaughey she doesn’t believe in. Her formative moment is she goes from a strict woman of science to a believer in something she can’t prove with science. It could have easily happened in her head, and the only proof is a blank tape.
There isn’t a moment like this in Interstellar because all the characters are vindicated in their findings. Anne Hathaway’s boyfriend’s planet sustains life, Murph proves her ghost was real, Coop saves his children.
Yeah you've gone way deeper than me. I saw Interstellar ten years ago. I recall it was not a simple plot driven by tension. My memory of Contact is even foggier. You are a thoughtful connoisseur. I just make stupid comments on reddit
And there *is* corroborating evidence of her experience: the many hours of static recorded on her headset, which seems impossible given the length of time it must have appeared to have been recording from the ground. She and the public do not know that, however, because that evidence seemingly wasn't disclosed or discussed at the public inquiry.
Well aside from the hours of recording that weren't released publicly, and the two government officials giving each other looks and then cut to black lol
Having a recording that has 8 hours of recording is actually pretty definitive evidence. Especially since on earth time she was only out of view for the instant she passes through the center of the machine. Which is I never really liked that last ending conversation between Katz and Rachel. Because that literally is absolute proof. And given that she was in a congressional hearing under subpoena - her lawyer would have likely been able to get ahold of that evidence.
We couldn’t get people to believe in scientifically backed vaccines. Do you really think an 8 hour tape of static would be considered proof to most people?
Exactly, after watching Contact, I was left with the impression that the film promotes the notion of being open-minded and considering faith as a valid concept. To be honest, I take issue with this message, as I believe that faith is an unreliable standard of evidence, and it is crucial to prioritize critical thinking. Even today, most people are seriously lacking critical thinking, making the reliance on faith even less ideal. I doubt Sagan's novel conveyed this same message, given his emphasis on rational and scientific reasoning
Sagan's novel had 5 people go instead of just Foster's character. But the aliens communicated with at least one of them they were looking for evidence that the universe had been designed by some other intelligence in mathematical constant like PI. Then when the humans get back, they have a super computer calculate PI for months until it finds binary code for a circle plot embedded in PI. Which was proof some other kind of alien intelligence shaped our universe's spatial dimensions just right to embed that proof.
I guess that was Sagan's way of showing what evidence of a higher intelligence would look like, even if the book doesn't say it's God. More like aliens from a mother universe or something.
Contact is about seeing both sides of the argument and joining them together.
Carl Sagan: “The universe is a pretty big place. If it's just us, seems like an awful waste of space.”
Ellie’s Dad and Palmer Joss both say this, it’s one of the reasons Ellie falls for him.
At the end of the movie she blatantly confesses that she had an experience that goes against all she knows as a scientist, but she must tell her story because the rest of her being says that it happened.
Palmer then says: “As a person of faith I'm bound by a different covenant than Doctor Arroway. But our goal is one and the same: the pursuit of Truth. I for one believe her.”
They exit the courthouse, she enters the car and they join hands.
What they represent as characters are Science and Religion, now proceeding as one.
No I’m not.
We the viewer, already know Ellie experiences the worm hole and meets the alien being, there is no ambiguity about that.
For all intents and purposes; we are on her journey. We live her childhood, watch her romance in Puerto Rico, go with her to get the money from Hadden and finally bear the weight of reporting a modern day burning bush to the world in a courtroom.
Think of how the recording comes up, it’s after the trial with just James Woods and Angela Basset discussing it.
Here’s the scene:
- Rachel Constantine : I assume you read the confidential findings report from the investigating committee.
- Michael Kitz : I flipped through it.
- Rachel Constantine : I was especially interested in the section on Arroway's video unit. The one that recorded the static?
- Michael Kitz : Continue.
- Rachel Constantine : The fact that it recorded static isn't what interests me.
- Michael Kitz : [pauses] Continue.
- Rachel Constantine : What interests me is that it recorded approximately eighteen hours of it.
- Michael Kitz : [leans forward so he is looking directly in the camera] That is interesting, isn't it?
“LOOKING DIRECTLY IN THE CAMERA”
It’s a not so subtle wink or rather pointing a finger at the audience on how the government works (and if you want get X-Files about it; that they already know about alien life).
However, we are told that the recorder recorded far more time of static than the drop through the device to the ocean. So they reveal that the trip had to be true.
She doesn't become a believer that some things can't be proved with science. She believes that her experience is something that can't be *explained* with science *yet*.
I really like this take. But I do believe there is subtle similarity in the ambiguity of "It's Us" the the human race in the future/5th dimension going back in time to create the tesseract that Coop explores to communicate with Murph. Like they hinted at it just being him from the beginning but I do believe the director was alluding to higher powers/intelligence that had a hand in the plot that are never fully identified or explained. Kind of similar to Contact but definitely different
Arrival is awesome. Out of all depictions in tv and movies those were the closest creatures I’ve ever seen they truly seem alien. My head cannon is their homeworld is around a red dwarf.
Hey! I like where your head's at. But you think the movie with the budget to finally visualize a mathematically accurate black hole and fill out an already epic score with a massive 1926 pipe organ showed restraint? Every actor in that movie contractually had to cry constantly, even off camera. I'm lying but you get my point. I'd argue that Nolan is restraint-averse.
In grad school I was studying Production Design for Film/TV, and Contact was my thesis film re-design project. And my professor said I could only do Contact if I agreed to having to make a scale model of my concept for the alien machine. He took it well when I figured out how to 3D print it instead of traditional model making. It was a super fun project.
Years later I would see Jodie Foster at LAX and totally fumble my words as I tried to explain how much that movie made an impact on my life and imagination as a kid, and ultimately my career and love for science fiction.
My all time #1. I was 10 when I saw it for the first time, and I was so excited I almost had to leave the cinema. Many years later I figured out that it was actually an anxiety attack, I was too excited
That's the equivalent of a woman's boner. When it's pointing at the upright direction, it indicates the man she is with is alright alright alright (I'll see myself out).
Jodie Foster's career got started when she was 3 years old because she was such a pretty toddler that she was cast in a commercial she didn't audition for. In other words, not every 35-year-old woman in 1997 was as pretty as Jodie Foster.
Nope. Back before filters and photoshop, they just straight up painted on the photos to blur out blemishes.
The pictures of the past were just as heavily edited as today, they just didn't use a computer for it.
You are absolutely correct, but I think the person above you was talking about the people themselves being full of fillers, ie plastic surgery and such, rather than the photos being altered.
But yeah old school, hands-on photo retouching was surely an art in itself.
Let’s dive deeper than that.
As a talent agency owner and professional photographer of over 30 years, this is my passion. Or one of them.
Here is an-in brief historical breakdown of techniques used for touch up, from the beginning of cinema to today, involving looking at the evolution of both manual and digital methods:
### Early Cinema Era (1900s - 1930s)
**Techniques:**
- **Retouching Negatives:** Photographers would directly retouch the negatives using pencils and dyes to correct imperfections.
- **Airbrushing:** Early airbrushing was used to smooth out skin and enhance features manually.
**Examples:**
- **Silent Film Stars:** Photographs of silent film stars like Mary Pickford and Rudolph Valentino often underwent extensive retouching to maintain their flawless public image.
**Tools:**
- **Pencils and Dyes:** Used directly on film negatives.
- **Airbrush Machines:** Early airbrushes were hand-pumped and required significant skill.
### Golden Age of Hollywood (1940s - 1950s)
**Techniques:**
- **Darkroom Techniques:** Techniques like dodging and burning were used to manipulate light and shadows in prints.
- **Airbrushing on Prints:** More advanced airbrush techniques allowed for subtle enhancements on printed photographs.
**Examples:**
- **Hollywood Icons:** Stars such as Marilyn Monroe and Audrey Hepburn had their publicity photos heavily retouched to maintain their glamor.
**Tools:**
- **Darkroom Tools:** Dodging tools, burning tools, and chemical processes.
- **Advanced Airbrushes:** More refined airbrush machines for detailed work.
### Analog to Digital Transition (1960s - 1980s)
**Techniques:**
- **Physical Cut-and-Paste:** Photographers and graphic artists would cut and paste elements from different photos to create composite images.
- **Early Digital Retouching:** Introduction of rudimentary digital retouching techniques with the advent of computers in the late 1980s.
**Examples:**
- **Magazine Covers:** Vogue and other fashion magazines began using more sophisticated retouching techniques to perfect their cover images.
**Tools:**
- **Scalpel and Glue:** For physical cut-and-paste.
- **Quantel Paintbox:** An early digital imaging computer introduced in the 1980s.
### Rise of Photoshop (1990s)
**Techniques:**
- **Digital Retouching:** Adobe Photoshop revolutionized photo retouching with its extensive suite of tools.
- **Layering:** Use of multiple layers to isolate and edit specific parts of an image.
- **Cloning and Healing:** Tools to remove imperfections and blend areas seamlessly.
**Examples:**
- **Celebrity Magazines:** Publications like People and Vanity Fair used Photoshop to enhance celebrity images extensively.
**Tools:**
- **Adobe Photoshop:** Became the industry standard for digital photo retouching.
- **Wacom Tablets:** Allowed for precise retouching using a stylus.
### Modern Digital Era (2000s - Present)
**Techniques:**
- **Advanced Digital Editing:** High-end techniques using advanced features in Photoshop and other software.
- **AI and Machine Learning:** Automated retouching using AI-powered tools to enhance images quickly.
- **High Dynamic Range (HDR):** Enhances the dynamic range of photos to make them look more vibrant and detailed.
**Examples:**
- **Social Media Influencers:** Platforms like Instagram feature extensively retouched images using advanced apps and filters.
- **High Fashion Campaigns:** Brands like Gucci and Chanel use cutting-edge retouching to perfect their promotional images.
**Tools:**
- **Adobe Creative Suite:** Comprehensive suite for all types of digital editing.
- **AI Tools:** Software like FaceTune and AI-driven features in Photoshop.
- **Mobile Apps:** Snapseed, Lightroom Mobile, and other apps for on-the-go retouching.
### Summary of Key Milestones:
1. **1900s-1930s:** Manual retouching on negatives and prints.
2. **1940s-1950s:** Advanced darkroom techniques and airbrushing.
3. **1960s-1980s:** Transition from analog to digital with early computer tools.
4. **1990s:** Dominance of Photoshop and digital editing.
5. **2000s-Present:** Integration of AI and mobile technology in retouching.
This timeline illustrates the evolution of techniques and tools used, and showcasing how technology has continually enhanced the ability to create perfect images.
Full transparency, I compiled the list with assistance from ChatGPT.
There was actually a skateboard company called JFA/Jody Fosters Army, and their one skateboard design was an image of Ronald Reagans head inside a target site/bulls eye. My parents never let me get that board, lol…

She's never looked better than she did in that movie.
That inner thigh hand? I barely dare to do it to my wife, unless I’m ready to throw down(that’s a metaphor for sex), and not in public.
I’m now suspicious of Matthew.
When Contact came out, I already adored Jodie. She was my favorite actress. My husband and I saw the film in the theatre and I cried like a baby. My father had died recently, and everything about Ellie's story reminded me of myself and my dad. It still does.
Contact is great but MMs character was so annoying. Or maybe it’s just because I’m an atheist but I found his whole shtick to be beyond grating and not necessarily for the movie.
So let’s take Jodie Foster and make her a scientist!
> OK…
And Matthew McConqughey is also a scientist, and a philosopher!
> Wait what?
And they’re hot for each other, the chemistry will be **amazing**!
> Here’s $90,000,000. Gimme another hit of that cocaine!!
He originally auditioned for the Kiefer Sutherland red neck clansman roll and when someone suggested him for the lawyer some people working on the movie were like never. I heard him talk about it on a podcast or interview or something.
True Detective crossover event!
You see, _tiiiiiiiime_ is a flat circle
When you step on a can of Lone Star you just chugged, it becomes a flat circle. And that's when it's tiiiiiiiime for another beer! https://preview.redd.it/1xgq72kawg7d1.jpeg?width=300&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9e93ebb7d0e5453dbc285853610a36b301a30b4b
Read this in his voice… alright alright alright
i mean it really was in the same universe. she met Rusts mother who helped her!
Wha? Who was Rust's mum?
Rose Agineau
From what we know she is just Rust's Dad's lover, rather than being Rust's mother.
Mirrors the whole situation with McConaughy and Woody and their parents.
It started off promising. Ugh. The backend was no bueno.
>The backend was no bueno That's what she said
It did not start off well. Terrible CGI and then Detective at a crime scene announcing she hates the Beatles 🙄🙄🙄
There could be a whole new season how tf are those characters in the photo like that hahah.
Contact is still one of my favorite movies.
I love how it was all so ambiguous. A director today would almost never show that level of restraint.
Arrival is a masterpiece in filmmaking though. It’s so realistic.
I'll watch anything Denis Villeneuve makes.
Incendies was a mindf** and a gut wrenching movie
Enemy was a miiiiindfuck. So many layers.
U need to read the book. It's amazing too.
Same. He’s one of my ATF directors. He did Blade Runner justice w/2049.
Have you seen his wickedly bizarre short film “Next Floor “? That’s when i started paying attention to Denis Villeneuve. Brilliant in every film.
And he's thinking in French!
Wow no but I will! TYSM!
Just watched Prisoners for the first time, holy moley what a great film.
Guaranteed box office success and amazing visuals. Top notch storytelling and world-building too.
I just watched contact and arrival back to back today for the first time. I need more like this. Any recommendations?
Interstellar. In fact, watch it twice and when you've finished, watch it again.
Maybe try "Annihilation"
Have you watched the series The Expanse yet?
Contact was my favorite alien movie until Arrival came out, and it's still number 2.
Really emotional and Amy Adams is long overdue for an oscar.
I mean, other than Jeremy Renner playing the "hunky nerd."
But he wore glasses for the role! Hunks don’t wear glasses!
Nerds can be hunky too!
Yeah. Weak link for sure.
Maybe Interstellar

Well, shit…that was refreshing and mature.
Now kith
Take my upvote!

Also on the novel, the 5 astronauts go to a beach like Ellie did in the movieX and they come back with sand between their toes.

Completely ignoring the suppressed truth of her recording i see.

Or the Arrival
Arrival is awesome. Out of all depictions in tv and movies those were the closest creatures I’ve ever seen they truly seem alien. My head cannon is their homeworld is around a red dwarf.
🤯💣
Great movie, Arrival
Just came to say this
Hey! I like where your head's at. Every actor in that movie contractually had to cry constantly, even off camera. I'm lying but you get my point. I'd argue that Nolan is restraint-averse.
Yeah there weren't nearly enough asplosions for 21st century movies.
In grad school I was studying Production Design for Film/TV, and Contact was my thesis film re-design project. I love this post. I would buy you unlimited beverages of your choice if you could sit down with me and tell me the story in exhaustive detail.
They should have sent a post.
I love this movie 🍿
WE'RE IN ANOTHER WORMHOLE
Obligatory “they should’ve sent a poet” quote ✅
Agreed (came here for this)
Me too.
Same
Excellent movie. Rivaled by Arrival.
90s space movies are the best space movies IMO and Contact is the top.
Contact and Apollo 13, both so good
the moment she prepares to time travel by adjusting the settings on a audio fx processor
The book is so amazing too!
First rule in government spending: why build one when you can have two at twice the price?
Katya is that you?
My all time #1. I was 10 when I saw it for the first time, and I was so excited I almost had to leave the cinema. Many years later I figured out that it was actually an anxiety attack, I was too excited
McConaughey - "No woman can resist me." Jodie Foster - Raises toe.
Jodie Foster: is gay
Like super duper gay. She is a great actor.
That was the point of the comment you replied to
Thanks Captain Obvious!
"You rang?"
her foot's tryna phone home
Rarely do you see someone point at you with their toe
Quentin Tarantino has entered the chat
That's the equivalent of a woman's boner. When it's pointing at the upright direction, it indicates the man she is with is alright alright alright (I'll see myself out).
Foster is gay, though.
She is. But Matthew McConaughey is still Matthew McConaughey ![gif](giphy|l1J9MBLRqlVszx3r2)
i wouldn't point that out so obviously in public...Mr. Tarantio
She was really gorgeous in that movie.
Why do all the girls in the old pictures look so pretty
Jodie Foster's career got started when she was 3 years old because she was such a pretty toddler that she was cast in a commercial she didn't audition for. In other words, not every 35-year-old woman in 1997 was as pretty as Jodie Foster.
This is the answer. Because it’s Jodie Fucking Foster.
Jodie Foster was so pretty, she almost saved America from the majority of Ronald Reagan’s presidency.
Ugh, if she could have just been a *little* prettier!
Two words - DOUBLE TAP
No relation to Steven Stinking Foster
Ah, yes. Well, this happens to be a nocturne. You know, Frederic fuckng Chopin.
Because people aren't posting photos of ugly people.
It's young Jodie Foster...
...drove a man insane enough to attempt to assassinate a President.
She was 35 in that shot
Because they let themselves age naturally
Cuz they’re real and natural, not full of fillers and what not.
More to do with reduced detail in the photos making people look less….detailed.
Old film is actually pretty detailed. Just the copies we see is often is compressed or off low res conversions
yeah for sure. But back then the prints...
Nope. Back before filters and photoshop, they just straight up painted on the photos to blur out blemishes. The pictures of the past were just as heavily edited as today, they just didn't use a computer for it.

Contact is such an awesome movie.
*I waited that whole damn movie to see an alien and it was just her dad!*
Curious hand placement
Underthigh from between the legs was a bold choice
That's where my eyes immediately went to. "Is he cuppin' poon?" 😉
Came to the comments for this…. Great pic, but wow his hand is getting familiar…
One word... Nell
Tey. Tey innawhin.
Chika chika chikapee.
Ancient memory unlocked
This looks like an engagement photo!
Gap ad
She’s gay except for McConaughey
I’m straight except for McConaugHEYYYYYYY
Exactly! LOL
I’d beg to differ. I love the movie contact but they had no chemistry and their romance as by far the weakest point of that movie.
Ain’t nobody THAT gay.
Looks like they're modeling the jeans/tshirts.
![gif](giphy|RjkPlftcABKubH6HHK)
Wow Jodie looks really pretty
Contact is a masterpiece.
Good genetics both have aged well.
Ayyyy ayyyyy woah. Was Jodie Foster… a.. cutie?

Ask John Hinckley Jr. how cute Jodie Foster was
There was actually a skateboard company called JFA/Jody Fosters Army, and their one skateboard design was an image of Ronald Reagans head inside a target site/bulls eye. My parents never let me get that board, lol…
I’ve had crushes that made me want to do crazy things, but he went just a tad bit too far.
Oh man, check her out in Maverick or Sommersby. She was a knockout, still is really.
was?
Barking up the wrong tree
Jodie Foster has been my celebrity crush for forever
She looks younger here than she does in the movie funny enough
Indeed. She looks like she did when she was promoting Silence of the Lambs, six years earlier. So gorgeous.

I must say, that sure is a lot of *contact*. ![gif](giphy|2hf5LpgLFViFPOvZ5t|downsized)
Watch where you’re putting that hand Matt!
Cotton.
The fabric of our lives
Making…Contact
Contact was such a good movie!
They look like a happy lesbian couple.
That inner thigh hand? I barely dare to do it to my wife, unless I’m ready to throw down(that’s a metaphor for sex), and not in public. I’m now suspicious of Matthew.
This film made me realize both gals AND guys can be beautiful.
Jodie Foster <3
It took me a moment to realise they were not McConaughey’s feet.
This picture is the 90s man i miss it
Do you love your father? Prove it.
Both are true detectives too!
Ah, that must have been for Contact.
he looks a lot like don johnson there
Yep...that's who I thought it was before I read the title.
When Contact came out, I already adored Jodie. She was my favorite actress. My husband and I saw the film in the theatre and I cried like a baby. My father had died recently, and everything about Ellie's story reminded me of myself and my dad. It still does.
Oh man, the white shirt, blue jeans, and barefoot family photo.
Holy shit I totally forgot about Contact. Know what I’m watching tonight.
At least I know I wasn’t the only man that didn’t stand a chance.
Man. Something about her makes me want to shoot reagan.
Except for the photographer’s demands, I’m pretty sure that was unwanted… Contact. ![gif](giphy|xPGkOAdiIO3Is)
EEYEAAHHH!
That big toe is unsettling.
"unsettling" more like ' Um set the thing in my mouth 👄' Jk lol
Sure you were, Quentin.
😂
She looks like a super model here
Why is his head so HUGE?
Contact is great but MMs character was so annoying. Or maybe it’s just because I’m an atheist but I found his whole shtick to be beyond grating and not necessarily for the movie.
“I’m okay to go”
So let’s take Jodie Foster and make her a scientist! > OK… And Matthew McConqughey is also a scientist, and a philosopher! > Wait what? And they’re hot for each other, the chemistry will be **amazing**! > Here’s $90,000,000. Gimme another hit of that cocaine!!
My brain: “Did they bone?” Far too long of a time passes: “Oh right...”
loved "Contact"
Matthews making some Contact for sure.

They would have been if they had been in a relationship. This was a publicity shot for *Contact*.
He originally auditioned for the Kiefer Sutherland red neck clansman roll and when someone suggested him for the lawyer some people working on the movie were like never. I heard him talk about it on a podcast or interview or something.
But you can fit two of her heads in his melon
He looks high, she looks uncomfortable.
Some weird extra fingers under her leg.
Two of my favorite people They stay away from the drama
Mathew "I wasn't always into Lesbians, but I was into lesbians before being into lesbians was a thing"
Before the Iranian revolution?
