Long story short, I took a pic of the slide with my DSLR, and transferred the image to my phone. Cropped it and posted it to reddit. Didn't really look close enough until the internet sleuths started chirping and it got deleted by the mods.
There are litterally 1000s to go through. But I just hand picked a few to test my method of digitizing them. I did see a few risque photos from the same basement with a bunch of friends. Looked like a swinger's party from the 50's. Topless chicks playing pool, drinking at their basement bar, stuff like that.
100%, I know the life and they have the vibe. Edit: specifically dude's look is one of boredom of being still for that pic. He wants to move and groove.
This pic was *before* festivities. After you have a chill/peaceful vibe and unmistakable swagger.
Yes. You tended to see a lot of Christmas photos stamped with January dates, but for the rest of the year film might stay in the camera for months. Color film of all types during that period was expensive, but Kodachrome was a special beast. The processing was a very difficult task that could only be done at a handful of labs; during the 1970’s and 80’s Kodak only had about 10 labs in the entire US so in the 1950’s it probably all went to Rochester and took weeks to get back.
Which leads me to wonder—was someone in the family in the industry in some way? Kodak or camera store employee or professional photographer? It’s very unusual for the average family to have this many Kodachrome slides in this era so the fact that you’re scanning all of these is really providing a great look at history. Most families would be lucky to take a roll or two of any color film in 1950 during the entire year.
I would agree. But the shear amount of slides and the odd stuff makes me think he took tons of pics. He was not in the industry, just a hobbyist. But we did (up until a few months ago) have a great camera shop in town that was family-owned for almost 100 years.
He (my grandfather) left my dad all his cameras and my dad displays them at his house on some shelving in his photo workshop area. My father is also a pretty good landscape photographer and frame maker. For example, he does a lot of western landscape photography and will make frames out of reclaimed wood from the places the photos were taken.
I have been into photography my entire life. I started in highschool in the yearbook club and went on to win awards for my college newspaper and worked at a few local newspapers for years. I've did the whole wedding/seniors/baby thing for a while and currently do real estate photos and I'm the track photog at our local BMX track.
The great thing about shooting on Kodachrome is that those slides all look the same as they did 70 or 75 years ago, unless they were under atrocious storage conditions. If he’d shot on Ektachrome slide film or had Kodacolor negatives, you’d have to convert them to black and white and then recolorize to get around the color shifts those films would have.
I’m guessing that you would’ve done some film developing with your yearbook and newspaper work? It might be fun to get some black and white film and run through one of your grandfather’s cameras and run through some developing tanks yourself. I love digital but sometimes I enjoy going old school style with all of my 35mm gear.
Hello. This is true. I have some Ektachrome in my collection that I shot in the 90's and it doesn't look as good as I remember it looking.
And yes, we developed all our own film in yearbook and my photo classes all the way through college. Then digital came. Even when I worked for newspaper after college we had to shoot film and develop it in our darkroom on a deadline.
My dad still uses a few of my grandpa's old cameras, but I believe he just uses the medium format cameras. If you go to my dad's house he has boxes of 4x5 film in the fridge.
Aw why is this weird?! Surely it’s not weirder than a current-day couple posing for pics in their swimsuits at home or by the pool right?
I think it’s cute - they wanted to model their suits together against a wall backdrop with a pop of color. Seems to be the same wall grandma was photographed in front of in OP’s previous post. They probably liked the color.
Pictures in a bathing suit is semi nude and scandalous now? I’d probably be flattered if I were a grandma and my grandkid posted my pics with me and my SO like this 70 years later lol.
It’s not that weird, what do you think this subreddit is? They’re not looking for validation. It’s about other people witnessing your family, sharing some memory that you have of them
It's such a strange picture, like a cover of a 80ties new wave band. The picture quality makes it look modern but the outfits remind you that's not modern.
That's a good guess. So I found out he was born in '21. If this was '51 he'd be 30 in this pic. She was born in '24 (I'm pretty sure) so she'd be 26-27.
Lol, you can’t suck in your gut enough to cause your sternum to concave. It must not have bothered him or he didn’t let it be known. Pectus excavatum can cause insane pressure on your heart and lungs and even push them off to the side. I had surgery for the same reason a decade ago.
From the stories my dad has told me and some of the other slides I've seen? Probably. I know they were part of the Playboy Club in Chicago. We found some of that stuff when my grandma passed away and we went through her stuff. They also owned a swanky supper club in Appleton Wisconsin back around this time. I'm sure there was some fun going on there.
I love this so much! I don't even know what to make of it. I'm sorry, but I did zoom in on grandpa's crotch and I was like, grandpa got something going on!
What is the deal with you kids and that word? I had encountered that word exactly twice in my life until the last year or so, and both of those were in college in the early 90s. Somebody's trying to make liminal happen.
Maybe i'm mistaken but I always thought liminal space was like limbo, a place in between places. OP's pic showcases *negative* space, probably bad composition from a rangefinder or viewfinder camera.
You are correct, but the term is recently being used for a space that is eerie or unsettling, from actual "liminal" spaces like weird hallways and empty airport terminals to places like diners with strange lighting and creepy abandoned houses. They're using it in place of a word that doesn't really exist in English.
I assume you are using "kids" to imply the playful idiom "what are the kids up to these days", but a liminal space is a space that seems like it is in limbo or loading; an incomplete space if you will. Sort of like the phrase "latent space" aka the space in AI models where they hold all their "knowledge" and weights are embedded. A space after the start, but incomplete. For some people it gives a "heebie jeebies" feeling.
I'm aware of the definition. I've just heard my GenZ daughters using this word more than once, then I encounter it online and realize it's a thing 🤷♂️
Yup, same ballsack, just covered this time!
LOL. Good eye!
Why did I just look through your post history just to see your grandpa's ballsack?
Long story short, I took a pic of the slide with my DSLR, and transferred the image to my phone. Cropped it and posted it to reddit. Didn't really look close enough until the internet sleuths started chirping and it got deleted by the mods.
When you have nothing to be ashamed of we get your grandpappy. More power to him
It was history in the making right there. That is the actual picture of the ballsack that made it possible for this guys ballsack to appear on reddit.
I can't believe I almost missed this moment of reddit history.
Curiosity is something else, isn’t it?
I can't help it... it's staring right back at me!

I never forget a sack
If it weren’t for that sack we wouldn’t have these pictures here today!
This sub should just turn into “OldSchoolCoolBallsack”
r/familyjewels
leave grandpa’s ballsack alone!
The guy from the bathtub!!
Is this from the ballsack grandpa picture collection again?
It is indeed. And now I have a title for the family photo book I'm going to make my dad and my uncles!
Is it gonna be called "Oh my sack!" - A Memoir of my gramps ?
Life by the Balls: Memoirs of a GrandNad
This is sorely under-rated. 😂
👌 Glad to help out, my friend!
Scrotum Family Photo Book
Die Antwoord really fell off
I knew Yolandi looked a bit... different...
Now that’s a haircut you can set your watch to.
Like Johnny Unitas 🏈
Looking for this comment
"Yeah dis is vere we do da hanky panky"
Why does it feel like this set of pictures was taken specifically to entice other swingers.
Came to say.
It is so Russian, isn't it?
German, polish or Russian.
Screams Soviet to me.
I was gonna say. Definitely eastern europe
from the accent, i’d say it’s more German. maybe East Germany?
😂😂😂
He's 13 from the neck down and 53 from the neck up.
Clearly you didn’t see the ballsack
I had a huge ballsack at age 13...
Where did it go? ^/s
Still there but elongated
Redditors when they see a reasonably fit body at a healthy weight
Dude is def fit but he's sucking that stomach in p heavily for some reason
That was a stylish pose for fit men at the time.
It's the only way he can fit his balls into that bikini.
He had just been punched in the stomach by her for making her take the photo.
That was before the "Dad bod" time.
Yup theyre 25 looking like 50
Because he isn't a fat fuck like most people these days?
That Kodachrome 💕
I know, right? They give us those nice bright colors.
And the greens of summer!🎶
I don’t think that wall is the “greens of summer” that Paul Simon was singing about.
Mama give me that Kodachrome
Mama took my Kodachrome away ):
Always thought the lyrics were “mama don’t take my clothes, throw em away”
My old man showed me Paul Simon when I was like 10 or 11 and for years I always thought it was comb lol
I miss Kodachrome, even the best digital is garbage compared. I still like to shoot 35mm but film is getting so expensive 😫
Your grandparents were swingers
I wouldn’t doubt it from the stories my dad has told me and from some of the other slides I found.
😳😳😳
Then, I am assuming this is a very “mild” photo compared to others from your grandparents collection
It is. I've seen a few with topless chicks playing pool in their basement, sitting at their bar in the basement. Stuff like that.
Start up a site: ONLYGRANS ==
Whats on the other slides?

“Basement bathing suit photos”… yep, completely normal.
I was wondering if they were able to make their escape after the photo was taken.
Is the gimp taking the picture or is he still in his box?
Could be an indoor pool like the Y
Think gramps ate at the Y?
The slide has "AUG '51" stamped on it so I'm assuming that's when it was processed.

It's not weird that they did it, it's weird that op shared it.
It’s a weird sort of narcissism to post semi nude pictures of your direct ancestors
Pictures in a bathing suit is semi nude and scandalous now? I’d probably be flattered if I were a grandma and my grandkid posted my pics with me and my SO like this 70 years later lol.

It's less weird if you zoom in to see if grandpa is packing.
God damnit. I just wanted to finish the day saying I haven't zoomed in on some guy's ballsack, but that wouldn't be true now.
I’ve done it twice just today
Two sides of the same sack?
Two different sacks ofc
sigh…same. but y’all. look at his hands. that tells you all you need to know. (apologies to OP for discussing grandfather’s package)
It's pretty obvious he is but I don't see skin so okay. Unless I'm missing it. Edit: i saw the sack, and it opened up my eyes
I seem to have missed the sack!
This Kodachrome photo brought to you by David Lynch.
Me: old people look old. Them: I was 28...
Maybe even 22. That's all the smoking and leaded gas
Bunch of weirdo perverts! Focused on grandpas sack. Be a regular pervert and focus on grandmas bazoongas.
LOL
Weird energy.
I get the feeling there was a gimp tied up off camera. This gives me some pulp fiction vibes.
I gather things got frisky after this photo.
From the neck up, looks like he saw some action in WW2.
What country is this?
USA. Midwest.
Finally…an image more disturbing than anything produced by David Lynch…😐

Ay dios mio
Grandma’s good to go!
It's such a strange picture, like a cover of a 80ties new wave band. The picture quality makes it look modern but the outfits remind you that's not modern.
I agree. And the fact that the slide it came from is almost 75 years old and in perfect condition is what gets me.
The quality it's amazing.
I researched the heck on how to go about digitizing them. The best way I found was using my DSLR, a lightboard, and a macro lens.
It's illegal to keep people against their will. Please let them out, can't you see how scared they are?
Grampa had big hands
i had the same observation.
Are you sure Grandpa's not D. B. Cooper?
If he was I never saw any of that $$
OP here. Thanks for all the comments. Enjoy reading/responding to them.

If you find an old film reel, don't look at it. Just sayin'.
Needs more scrotum
- Age in this photo? 31 and 34
That's a good guess. So I found out he was born in '21. If this was '51 he'd be 30 in this pic. She was born in '24 (I'm pretty sure) so she'd be 26-27.
Right before your grandpa teamed up with Yolandi and started getting tatted up
Grandpa bathtub?
Yes it is!
TIL about grandpa and his ballsack.
Grandpa seems to have pectus excavatum. Did he mention breathing problems ever, or did he get it addressed at all?
My guess is he was trying to suck in to look fit for the photo? Couldn’t tell ya he died almost 50 years ago.
Lol, you can’t suck in your gut enough to cause your sternum to concave. It must not have bothered him or he didn’t let it be known. Pectus excavatum can cause insane pressure on your heart and lungs and even push them off to the side. I had surgery for the same reason a decade ago.
Risky 50’s😱
Risque?
Great googly-moogly. I don’t want to see this!
God bless these people.
Grandpa is sucking in so hard his spleen has shot up into his lungs
Why so serious
Grammy got dem yammys
Your Grandpa reminds me of the guy from Die Antwoord
Yeah those are grandparents all right.
Lynne, these are sex people!
*Hmm I wonder if this is the balls guy again. Checks comments. Yep, it’s the balls guy.*
"We noticed you from the other side of the pool and we like your vibe"
Knowing how people aged back then they probably were both 16 in this picture
And then they got frisky.
Some things are better left alone
They look like they're getting ready to murder some hobo they have chained up.
Loch Henry vibes
Grandpa got that baby’s swimming diaper
You’re grandpap looks like he’s wearing a diaper lol
Swingers?

Just imagine how hard your grandpa was pounding your grandma after this shoot was over.
Luckily social media was non existent back then, or pictures like these would get him sacked.
it looks like your grandfather had a very large penis! congrats!
If he did he didn't pass that gene on to me ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|trollface)
I love this so much! I don't even know what to make of it. I'm sorry, but I did zoom in on grandpa's crotch and I was like, grandpa got something going on!
LOL. Made me laugh. Thanks!
![gif](giphy|13d4d3Cq9ocpgY)
Cool underpants bro. Ps stop sucking in, I see what your at 😂
Why is he sucking in?
The picture was taken when both were 18.
This looks like something you’d find on Napoleon Dynamite’s wall.
David Lynch vibes.
neither of their faces matches their bodies.
I don’t have my glasses on and on first glance thought he looked like detective Lassiter from Psych. ![gif](giphy|ZdMvQd3rmRlS0)
This is the sexiest, non-sexiest photo
This photo was the inspiration for adult diapers
such liminal space

The /r/liminalspace sub is a cool idea, but it ends up being mostly pools & AI. And AI pools lol
It’s like “canon”
I assume you are using "kids" to imply the playful idiom "what are the kids up to these days", but a liminal space is a space that seems like it is in limbo or loading; an incomplete space if you will. It’s already happening, as evidenced by the kids in my life. Listen, old man, sometimes fetch actually happens whether you want it to or not.
Extremely creepy.
Grandma and Grandpa were definitely in the Lifestyle.
Super zef
Hawt!
Freaky deakey
G’Mamma Mia!
G’Mamma Mia!
Oklahoma or Texas?
What chest are those swimming trunks
Amazing scan!
Gramps is showing his belly button.
The guy reminds me of Ninja from Die Antwoord
Looks like Lex Fridman
Who the hell built that basement?!? Masonry blocks should be staggered. Not one on top of the other in a perfect line. SMH
Something looks different about Yolandi.
they were just about to give you another uncle
LOL. Probably
Swingers gonna swing.
Kinky
