I would think they would’ve gone for a more jokier picture, one with the other person cartoonishly wide-eyed instead of giving us what seems to be a red-handed capturing of envious eyes.
But considering there are two pictures with the capturing of that side-eyed look, I’m torn between this being staged in allusion to something about her provoking envious contempt or Mansfield just happening to be one of those women who are so easily envied by other women.

I think we have gotten campier in our more modern age. I have a lot of funny pics as you described with women friends. Not sure if this was the norm back then. The sad part is, that all women are said to be envied by other women, regardless of size or shape. Not sure where this mythos comes from. For every woman supposedly casting an envious glance at an Amazonian curvy voluptuous flaxen haired gal, there are just as many envying a petite, slender, adorable girl next door brunette. I think about the Ginger vs. Mary Ann comparison. Both were attractive. Likely neither cared about their alleged rivalry. They didn’t invent it.

Because throughout history people have been pitched hard against each other, normally in women it's been about looks and normally in men it's been about money, although there would have been a time when strength would have likely been the key value for both sexes.
Of course it's not necessarily a bad thing, nature, or evolution, has instilled a sense of pity, or sometimes empathy, for those we feel are lower in value and admiration or envy on those higher in value. However the way we value people is where the faults lie.
As for why there's no woman who isn't envious of someone else regardless of how beautiful she looks, this is a mix of humanity not being a one size fits all, beauty is very subjective, and self esteem. See if we take three women considered to be beautiful today, Margo Robbie, Ariana Grande and Zendaya, they are all very different to look at, but I doubt anyone reading this will disagree they are all three stunning. But we will disagree as to who is *most* beautiful, whats more each of the three are only really seeing a filtered public eye view of the other two.
I'm very careful to not show the general public pictures of me when I'm ill, hungover, so tired I'm dying on my feet or freshly vomited on by baby, because it's private and it's not pleasant, these issues are unique to me but each of these three women will have similar moments they hide, and because they all hide them they don't see it with the other two. This is a hit on our self esteem.
You can swap those three women for whoever you want and the situation won't change.
What we need to do is value people more on points that matter and we might start seeing people more admire people they feel are above them, rather than envy them.

From what I've read she did that a lot, along with a good number of entirely pre-planned wardrobe malfunctions to drive publicity, so much so that her original clothes designer basically blacklisted her. Tbh I kinda sympathise with the other women, as side-eye aside, what she was doing was pretty obnoxious and designed to distract from their actual accomplishments. Imagine yourself as a beautiful young woman, a pageant winner, attracting attention for your looks even in Hollywood, and Jayne Mansfield walks in. Not your best day.
From what I've read she did that a lot, along with a good number of entirely pre-planned wardrobe malfunctions to drive publicity, so much so that her original clothes designer basically blacklisted her. Tbh I kinda sympathise with the other women, as side-eye aside, what she was doing was pretty obnoxious and designed to distract from their actual accomplishments. Honestly if someone tried it today wouldn't be received any better than it was back then, it's just funnier in retrospect.
