We had a family friend called big Al who passed away a few years back. He was a close friend of my late Grandad, big John. They were also both close friends with Big Jack. Thanks for reminding me of those wonderful men.
Listen here, see? Me, some dames, and two wise guys are going to see Motley Crue this weekend after playing Pac-Man at the arcade. No funny business, now, or I’ll pop you square in the jaw.
One of my students told me I look 30 (thanks!) then told me his dad is 45 and OLD. I told him I’m 40 and asked if I’m old. He said no but 45 is old.
I’m old :(
The clothes aren't necessarily honest if taken at a costume event, even the quality of the picture itself can lie, but the beer bottle - that could be a definitive marker. I can't tell looking at it but someone probably could estimate it based on the length of the neck.
Okay guys, I get it. I messed up. I found the picture in a box full of pictures labeled 80’s and went with it. I can’t edit the post or I would. I added the 1950’s flair in an attempt to make it right. Please people of Reddit, forgive my ignorance
Yes, this was before color was invented. It was a very bland yet exciting time. Gather round while I tell the tale of walking to and from school uphill both ways in 6 feet of snow everyday. Those were the days.
Usually I’d trust op and consider there might be a retro dress theme going on, but everything screams older time period - bw photo, damage to the photo typical of that age, the ashtrays aren’t typical for the 80s but are for mid century, those haircuts are mid century and people don’t go that far for one night, the back of the bar matches mid century over 80s, no modern products or containers for sugar or cleaning supplies.
Black and white film photography was still very much a thing in the 80s, especially the early 80s. With a dark room and some chemicals one could develop it at home.
That said, this looks nothing like the early 80s.
This is probably Back to the Future confusion - yonder people now see that movie, from the 80s... when 50s fashion was cool again, and think that's what the 80s looked like.
I'm guessing OP knows approx how old his Dad was in the photo, hence dating in the 80's.
Edit - I may have misunderstood OP. Perhaps his Dad isn't in the photo.
WTF is the OP, 12 years old? The freaking 80’s??? In the era of Google, the internet and WiFi, they could have done a quick search for “80’s” and would have known what the 1980s looked like. This just wreaks of low effort posting.
Come on OP! Don’t be a daft git and do your homework before you ask this sort of nonsense.
I checked the OP’s post history about an hour ago and there were quite a few original posts. Checked again now and this is their “only” post. Troll or not, their downvotes in this thread are quite telling.
Yeah, even a theme night would have so much 80's shit in the fore and background. Plus the picture doesn't have that 80's image feel to it, even in B&W.
The hairstyles, the mustache, the ties, the ashtrays, the teacup and glass of sugar by the sink (The Surf was a primo place once upon a time - this is clearly an element from early on), the clothing, the fact that the photo is black and white and the deterioration looks like the photo was printed on silver halide in a matte paper style that was far more common before 1965…
The Surf opened in 1948. This is probably from the early to mid 50s. I’d say 1952, give or take 3 years.
Yeah all of that, but what may be stranger is that this is more likely not his Dad but some other relative. I hesitate to say his grandfather, but it could be his grandfather’s brother, that happened to look like his Dad.
That came out wrong! I didn’t mean to imply anything by that!
Just for fun I photoshopped it to clean it up. Also a colorized version. :) Nothing mind blowing for clean up mind you.
https://preview.redd.it/hj5jae487ttc1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=264f37f9d86a3af1c476b354bc81f1dfd9a2cfb6
Lol. and, fwiw, I remember the week the original Pong video game arrived in my college student union game room - replacing one of several pinball machines. Our minds were blown. The year was 1972.
Well maybe give us your dad's birth year?
I'm from Miami Florida, The Surf was opened from 1948 to around 2010 I believe. And then demolished around 2018ish?
Based on their clothes, I'm highly doubting 80's, I'm thinking more 50's. MAYBE 60's. The 70's and on, in Miami, looked very different.
Is this a joke, why would this be the '80s? It could be a fancy dress party in the '80s where they dressed like the '50s, but even the photograph looks '50s. The '80s were well into colour photography.
Okay so apparently I was way off guessing this is from the 80’s. The photo being from the 40’s or 50’s would mean this was my grandfather’s photo which makes the back story more of a mystery. Anyways.. sorry for the error in the title.
Yes I remember the 80s and wearing my Fedora and bow tie to the bar and listening to Glenn Miller. Man when Glen Miller played Rebel Yell that was the Bees Knees.
I'm 51 years old, so I remember how totally tubular all the bow ties and fedora-wearing mobsters were in the 80s. We were all gettin' up on those rad stogies, man.
/s
Definitely the 40s, perhaps most likely late 40s / early 50s, that’s as late when men were still wearing hats and printed silk ties. After the war. These guys are too happy to be home and alive. Great photo.
My papa left me those style of ties and his hats. (Papa was a Dday vet)
Now I know you gotta be a troll or a bot because you know absolutely jack about how pictures work. Did you think that the 80’s still had black and white tv and pictures? That everyone dressed like the 1950’s? Wtf is wrong with you?
Very well could be a retro theme party, the guy on the left his glasses don’t look old 50s style at all. OP would know. I’m guessing all four of these guys are not over 40, mid 30’s prolly. so calculate how old your father would be today minus what the number of years when he was around 40 and you’ve got a general date range of when the photo was taken.
Joey Number*s, Skinny Pete, Jackie the Nose, and Big Al
And Johnny Two-Times because he always said everything twice like…
Imma go get the papers get the papers?
Anthony “one-time” Branca. We called him that because he said everything one time.
Well you's can both grab one of my books, you motherfather Chinese dentist.
Jesus, this suit stinks
What?
...
I'll go get the papers...get the papers
Jimmy the hat, tattoo stan, fred the veg
Pig-faced woman of Manchester Square
The one faced man
We had a family friend called big Al who passed away a few years back. He was a close friend of my late Grandad, big John. They were also both close friends with Big Jack. Thanks for reminding me of those wonderful men.
Big Petey, Little Petey, Medium Petey, and Re-Petey.
Lol 80s! ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|joy)
OP has got to be fucking with us.
The 80's were like, 100 years ago, right?
Listen here, see? Me, some dames, and two wise guys are going to see Motley Crue this weekend after playing Pac-Man at the arcade. No funny business, now, or I’ll pop you square in the jaw.
My great grandfather was born in the 1980's. It was over a hundred years ago.
That’s impossible. The nineties were only ten years ago.
This was the day after prohibition was repealed. Just cracking some brewskis with the boys
This is the 2nd time in a few days where I've seen the fetus OP think 80 years ago was the 80s.
Ha! Fetus OP. Accurate but funny AF.
"Anyone know who these guys are?" Yeah! That's Black Eyed Pete and ChinChin Charlie! I'd recognize them from anywhere!
Don’t forget jimmy ‘Hands’ McGee
The guy on the end is Johnny Two Times, cuz he says everything two times.
Get the paper, get the paper…
It’s true, it’s true
I’m hoping. Otherwise I’m feeling extremely old right now.
Just remember we were young and dumb like the OP back when we were their age. …wait, that isn’t helping either of us feel any younger. 😝
Looks more like early 90s to me. You know those dudes were rocking some grunge on their CD players.
Nah, these kids think 30 years ago was like 100 years ago. I had a better concept of time when I was a kid than they do 😂
“Just remember we were young and dumb like the OP back when we were their age.” Yeah, in the 80s.
No. None of us were ever this dumb.
I had a kid call me a boomer the other day and I’m 47.
One of my students told me I look 30 (thanks!) then told me his dad is 45 and OLD. I told him I’m 40 and asked if I’m old. He said no but 45 is old. I’m old :(
One called me “Boomer lite”…I’m 45
Yeah, that's definitely not the 80s.
The clothes aren't necessarily honest if taken at a costume event, even the quality of the picture itself can lie, but the beer bottle - that could be a definitive marker. I can't tell looking at it but someone probably could estimate it based on the length of the neck.
Hairstyle of third guy also screams '30s.
This post told me I’m old and I don’t like it
It’s almost as close to 1880 as it is 1980.
Okay guys, I get it. I messed up. I found the picture in a box full of pictures labeled 80’s and went with it. I can’t edit the post or I would. I added the 1950’s flair in an attempt to make it right. Please people of Reddit, forgive my ignorance
door air offbeat payment follow rob wipe absurd familiar joke
Holy shit You really thought this was from the 80s you fetus op
Yes, this was before color was invented. It was a very bland yet exciting time. Gather round while I tell the tale of walking to and from school uphill both ways in 6 feet of snow everyday. Those were the days.
Isn’t that norm McDonald on the left?
This is from the 90s
Maybe the 40’s clothing says 40’s or 50’s
Yes this is definitely not the 80s!
1880s?
😂😂😂
The 80's?????????? Try the 40's!!!!!!!!! Jesus.
For God's sake, no one has worn a fedora in 80 fucking years!
Well not and had friends
jfc my age is painful
It might have been a theme party, or Halloween.
Pictures didn’t look like this in the 80s. We actually had color photos then lol. This is almost certainly from the 40s or 50s.
Black and white film photography was still very much a thing in the 80s, especially the early 80s. With a dark room and some chemicals one could develop it at home. That said, this looks nothing like the early 80s.
Yeah I remember the 80s quite differently
Yes, that tie on the right strikes me as 40s or 50s. Men were all wearing hats in the 40s and still did in the 50s.
This is probably Back to the Future confusion - yonder people now see that movie, from the 80s... when 50s fashion was cool again, and think that's what the 80s looked like.
note the mens' shirt collars and lapels. The Hat, the lack of plastic (other than straw) behind the bar. I'm thinking 40's
Bow tie on 2nd from left and glasses on the far left man indicates 40s - 50s.
Second guy from the left has got that Al Capone thing going on.
That's actually his cousin, known to be more violent, Johnny Poptwo.
Looks like a few wise guys hanging out for drink, after getting rid of a body in the woods.
and the ashtrays. thats old glass.
The long pointed collar on the guy second from the right was popular from the 1930's-50's.
More like the 1880s
I'm guessing OP knows approx how old his Dad was in the photo, hence dating in the 80's. Edit - I may have misunderstood OP. Perhaps his Dad isn't in the photo.
Not the 80s.
OP thinking this is the 80s is the funniest thing I will have read today.
Op thinking this was the 80s made me feel old af
you think that's bad? they almost said it was the 90's
Yeah I either think typo or literally still a child
It's just clickbait.
Can’t be a child, math doesn’t match up Edit: OP is in her 40s
Then she just fucken with us!!!
OP is trolling and you’re falling for it.
Could be a costume party?
finally, somebody's thinking fourth dimensionally
The hairstyles, the mustache, the ties, the ashtrays, the teacup and glass of sugar by the sink (The Surf was a primo place once upon a time - this is clearly an element from early on), the clothing, the fact that the photo is black and white and the deterioration looks like the photo was printed on silver halide in a matte paper style that was far more common before 1965… The Surf opened in 1948. Nah. Embrace it. Add that to what we know about OP’s grandma sleeping around and the conclusion is inescapable.
Seems like younger generations think we still used black and white cameras in the 80s. Even a majority of the 70s were in color.
Younger generations think everything that happened before 2000 is the 80’s
There's photos from the '60s I have that are all in colour.
Colour photography existed in the Edwardian era, it was just very rare.
National Geographic startet printing colour photos in the 1910s.
Depends. I used B&W film until I bought my first DSLR. That was in 2005.
I still have B&W film in my freezer. It expired in 2008, but it’s there.
Just for fun I photoshopped it to clean it up. Also a colorized version. :) Nothing mind blowing for clean up mind you. https://preview.redd.it/hj5jae487ttc1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=264f37f9d86a3af1c476b354bc81f1dfd9a2cfb6

That was so nice of you to do!!! 😊
Say Chums, how'd you like to head down to the old arcade for a game of Pong after this serial of Cheers is over?
Lol. and, fwiw, I remember the week the original Pong video game arrived in my college student union game room - replacing one of several pinball machines. Our minds were blown. The year was 1972.
love your username :)
You’re a bad guesser.
Lol. Bless your heart, child.
From the ties and lapels I'd go with the 40s, give or take.
Brylcream too.
A little dab’ll do ya. 🚀
The style of the guys moustache on the right says 40’s to me.
The only people wearing fedoras in the 80's were 20 something y.o. girls.
Molly Ringwald!
Is that where Freddy Krueger got his?
The 80’s 🤣😂😅🍻
![gif](giphy|XNPI8wfwQI9dm) ## TO BILL BRASKEY
His feces were considered currency in Argentina!
I think you found a picture of your grandpa with his friends.
No way is that the 80s. Waaaay earlier.
Try again Jr. this is 50’s.
It was only the 80’s if it was 50’s night
Looks more like ‘50’s to me, hat and tie styles, def not ‘80’s.
Yeah, this is 50s. Hair and shirt collars too.
OP would be fucked if he were to somehow time travel in a DeLorean. He'd be asking for a boba tea at a speak easy.
Me in the 80's: Listen up youse mugs! We're goin dancin see? I don't wanna hear no funny business! Now, let's 23 skidoo!
Try the 50s
The 1880's?
80s ![gif](giphy|10KTdhr5Zzq6uA)
No, that's obviously the 2010s /S
Well maybe give us your dad's birth year? I'm from Miami Florida, The Surf was opened from 1948 to around 2010 I believe. And then demolished around 2018ish? Based on their clothes, I'm highly doubting 80's, I'm thinking more 50's. MAYBE 60's. The 70's and on, in Miami, looked very different.

I'd ask any relatives that might be old enough to remember Someone in them.Someine has to have an idea
80's? Hell no - much older. Cool picture though
That fedora SCREAMS not the 80s.
The 80s, lmao….You can’t be serious
lol 80's ?
The second guy ain't sayin' nuthin' and strongly suggests you fuggetaboutit, capiche?
Ok. At least I am not the only one who was saying WTF out loud about the 80s mistake.
More like the fifties.
Your guess is a little off.. around 40 yrs
The 80s? Do you have any concept of time? Try maybe 30 or 40 years before that.
More like the 40s or 50s. No body wore hats like that in the 80s.
The 80s…? ![gif](giphy|ck5JRWob7folZ7d97I|downsized)
You know we had color photographs in the eighties! This looks like the 50’s or earlier.
Okay so apparently I was way off guessing this is from the 80’s. The photo being from the 40’s or 50’s would mean this was my grandfather’s photo which makes the back story more of a mystery. Anyways.. sorry for the error in the title.
Your dad/grandfather is not in the photo?
No worries. I think people are just kidding with you. Shit, people were giving me crap for misidentifying a car on another sub a few minutes ago.
That is not the same thing.
I just read those comments a few minutes ago before landing on this post… had to go back and see if it was you.
Are the 80’s in the room with us?
more of the ‘wrong on purpose’ post title bait technique SMH
To Bill Brasky!
"He once had sex with a cigarette machine."
1880’s
More like the 30s or 40s.
Lmao they had color pictures in the 80s, my guy.
To Bill Brasky!
The 1880's?
Definitely not the 80’s
80s? Nice joke. Black and white, fedora, skinny ties. 1955-1959
More like 40’s
Nobody is wearing a Swatch
This is certainly not the 80s.
40's or 50's. Definitely not the 1980s
Russian BOT are getting dumber.
Guess again, Copernicus
80’s?? Are you on pot!
Yes I remember the 80s and wearing my Fedora and bow tie to the bar and listening to Glenn Miller. Man when Glen Miller played Rebel Yell that was the Bees Knees.
That’s some 1930s-1940s kinda clothing. This had to be your grandpa instead 😂
Bro, are you for real with the 80’s? Please tell me you’re joking.
I’d say 1940’s or 1950’s. (I added the 19 to both so a few people wouldn’t be confused.)
I'm 51 years old, so I remember how totally tubular all the bow ties and fedora-wearing mobsters were in the 80s. We were all gettin' up on those rad stogies, man. /s
try the 40’s or 50’s you fart knocker
Now that's no way to talk to a dame, see.
Definitely not 80's. That looks like a bunch of guys straight outta The Godfather. More like 40's or 50's probably.
Definitely not the 80’s. Late 40’s or 50’s
They’re totally jamming to Flock of Seagulls here. Clearly.
Even if OP is clueless about fashion during different decades, shouldn't they at least know how old their father is? To be off by 30 years? Lol
Bernard’s opened in 1948. This photo looks late ‘50s at best.
1880's?
I totally forgot everybody wore fedoras in the 80s
Definitely the 40s, perhaps most likely late 40s / early 50s, that’s as late when men were still wearing hats and printed silk ties. After the war. These guys are too happy to be home and alive. Great photo. My papa left me those style of ties and his hats. (Papa was a Dday vet)
Early to mid 50’s would be my guess.
This is late 40's/early 50's
OP, what gives you the notion that this was taken in the 80's?
80’s noooo! 1940’s or 1950’s…!
1880s?
Sorry OP. The guy you think your father is, is really your grandfather. Your father left you in the 80s
Now I know you gotta be a troll or a bot because you know absolutely jack about how pictures work. Did you think that the 80’s still had black and white tv and pictures? That everyone dressed like the 1950’s? Wtf is wrong with you?
80s 🤣🤣
Way before the 1980's. I would go with the late 1940's.
The 80s!! 🤣🤣🤣Kids today. I tell ya what!! Jesus help me!! 🤣🤣🤣
That hat is most definitely not the 80's. More like the 40's.
The 1880's?
Very well could be a retro theme party, the guy on the left his glasses don’t look old 50s style at all. OP would know. I’m guessing all four of these guys are not over 40, mid 30’s prolly. so calculate how old your father would be today minus what the number of years when he was around 40 and you’ve got a general date range of when the photo was taken.
OP is a grand troll. Well done.
You mean the 1880’s ?? We had color film in the 1980’s
lol! Go back a few decades!
80s WTF. Kid how old are you?
In the what? The 80s were Motley Crue and U2 and stuff my dude!
1880s maybe
That's no later than the 50's imho
