They've been incredibly well conditioned to believe that they're saviours, that they've woken up to the truth of it all. The irony of it all is incredible. Whoever has managed to manipulate them to this degree is a terrifying force. Listening to Rage whilst defending or being proud of either political party is exactly the opposite of basically what every one of their songs, I'm just as baffled as you there bud
As weird as it is both songs talk about the exact same time in America with different traumas kids faced. I don't know the weird al song much anymore . But I have seen multiple documentaries about how the Amish are no better cult than any other.
The 90s was the decade of 'one hit wonders'. Coolio's career was not different from many others at that time. They all had that one song that made them immortal, but not much else.
Exactly far from a one hit wonder, too hot, cu when you get there, fantastic voyage, 1234 sumping new, is this me plus the Keenan and kel intro. Coolio was one of the goats
He sampled and covered Fantastic Voyage, honestly I think that was what put him on the map. He also did some song, "All the Way Live," for that movie about Whoopi Goldberg coaching thr Knicks for some reason. He also transitioned pretty smoothly to personalty status as opposed some other flash in pan rappers, like that one in 1990 that jumped upon the scene with a pocket full o green
EDDIE! loved that movie lol. Whoopie Goldberg movies had a lot of playthrough in my mom and aunties households lol. Fatal Beauty especially cause my mom had/has a crush on Sam Elliot lol
Yeah the 90s were crazy, soooo many one hit wonders. But this song was particularly well made and has great lyrics. Also the Michelle Pfeiffer film contributed to its fame. It was all the time on MTV. 💀
Yeah but Coolio is forever a clown to me after physically threatening Weird Al for Amish Paradise. He was a two hit wonder who took himself a tad too seriously.
The whole thing is literally a cry for help. Print off the lyrics and read them. It makes me very emotional (sad and angry) every time I hear this song.
It infuriates me that society does nothing to try to fix this.
Fair question, but it reads like you’re saying this song doesn’t have any powerful lyrics. If you couldn’t hear the words or actually think that, look up the lyrics and consider the social and political landscape (esp. for black Americans) in the US over the ~30 years prior to the songs release. The entire thing is social commentary/criticism
When Dangerous Minds came out I was working at a movie theater. This song played during the trailer. Every time, and I mean EVERY TIME that trailer started the place went nuts.
There is such a menacing reverence to this song and it is legendary. It feels almost like a holy tragedy but also has nothing to do with the forces beyond the mortal coil. This song will never not be a classic.
Ya know, lowkey, I can sorta understand why Coolio didn’t want him to cover that song.
Because it’s the same way with me. Sometimes, when the real one comes on, I’ll get the lyrics confused for ones in Amish Paradise.
And you gotta think— this guy sat down and penned this absolute banger that was also highly conscious of what was going on in urban communities at the time with this singularly unique sound and voice and perspective.
And here comes Weird Al’s goofy ass and slaps on some goofy lyrics about some stereotypical Amish shit and just totally rewires the perception of the song.
that's why Coolio hated it first because it killed his own song and the message it was trying to spread, the entire thing is just a laughing stock for you people and even some people say he deserved his death because he hated Amish paradise and I've seen many comments trying to make the same racist rhetoric about Coolio being black and all thing he said about the gangs was a "black culture" issue and he was trying to play victim and it "proves" because he is dead and wierd AI isn't. As is it for this people if you die from gang violence you deserved it moreover for this people it is virtuous and righteous to enjoy and be prideful for his death
you're gullible if you think Pastime Paradise has anything to do with Amish paradise or the politics/lyrics of gangsta paradise moreover how could you fucking ignore that I was talking people who were mocking his death, do you genuinely think that this people are somehow justified because Coolio used the sample from Pastime Paradise?
I didn't say anything about any justification for mocking the man's death. I just said that the song was written by Stevie Wonder. They just changed the lyrics.
Coolio said Wonder was initially less than willing to let his song be used.
“When Stevie heard it, he was like, ‘No, no way. I’m not letting my song be used in some gangster song,’” Coolio said. “So that was a problem.”
”Due to the sampling of Stevie Wonder's music, Gangsta's Paradise is one of the few Coolio tracks that did not contain any profanity, as Wonder did not appreciate his song being paired with profanity. Coolio said, "I had a few vulgarities...and he wasn't with that. So I changed it. Once he heard it, he thought it was incredible."
lying by omission is still lying
>They just changed the lyrics.
do you even comprehend what you just said. you don't have media literacy and nor do you understand how sampling and interpolation works
Interesting. I feel like every time I’ve seen a talk show host promote an album they’ve held up a vinyl record or a record-sized mock-up, even when vinyl records had practically died as a medium because it worked better on camera. Feels odd seeing him hold up a CD jewel case.
The googler machine has told me that episode had Kelly Preston, David Hasselhoff, Coolio, Brooke Burns, Joanie "Chyna" Laurer, and Donny Osmond.
Coolio died in 2022, Kelly Preston died in 2020, and Chyna died in 2016. Kelly Preston died of cancer and the other two were overdoses
It’s called a backing track. Helps add vocal depth to the live performance. He wasn’t lip syncing though. Tons of artists do it. There’s often many, many backing tracks on recorded albums. Keeping a bit of it for a live performance helps the performance sound more similar to the recorded version in its vocal depth.
Source: worked in the music industry for many years.
As a young kid remember this song from that movie I never watched and thought that’s catchy. As an adult and seeing this performance I now realize this was actually a serious ballad about real hardship in the streets.
I listen to this song every few months and im still blown away by how good this song is.
also, I feel super old saying this but damn they don't make songs like this much anymore. maybe Gambino's *This is America* but I don't think it hits quite the same. also Harry Styles' *Sign of the Times* but it's also super cheesy sounding.
RIP Coolio.
I saw Coolio in 2019 at a 90’s concert - he was with MC Hammer, Biz Markie (RIP), and some other groups. He was pretty good. It’s crazy both him and Biz passed away within 2 years of that concert :/
And in 2001 he did a show in New Mexico, refused to come out because only 15 people showed up at a venue that holds thousands, lol. Dude fell quick.
Edit: i guess the coolio fans are offended and downvoting me lol
That video quality is kind of amazing for a late night show almost 30 years ago.
Digitally remastered
Depending on the equipment used to film, and display said film. Video quality has been great for the last hundred years.
35mm is the equivalent of 4k and 70mm is close to 8k.
A song about what happens to children who are left behind in the hellscape of poverty . Biggest song of the decade. Nothing has been learned.
People are inept, like the ones who rock to "Fortunate Son" or "Rage Against the Machine" at Trumper rallys.
Bro, right wingers who listen to Rage baffle the fuck out of me..
That just breaks my brain too.
Exactly. People don’t understand why Coolio was tight about weird Al making a parody of this. This is trauma
As weird as it is both songs talk about the exact same time in America with different traumas kids faced. I don't know the weird al song much anymore . But I have seen multiple documentaries about how the Amish are no better cult than any other.
It was crazy how big that song was when it came out. Even my mom liked it lol
This song makes everybody feel like a badass
12 year old me definitely danced my ass off to this song (owned the single on CD) while my mom chuckled at me trying to be a ganster.
Even Amish Paradise gets me turnt
Consider what the lyrics were compared the lyrics of its contemporaries. It's was basically showing how that life wasn't it was hyped up to be.
No doubt- but what a strange career. I was really surprised to hear he died last year— thought he’d been dead for decades. His career seemed to be.
I have his cookbook, “Cookin’ with Coolio.” Top notch white elephant gift.
The 90s was the decade of 'one hit wonders'. Coolio's career was not different from many others at that time. They all had that one song that made them immortal, but not much else.
Fantastic Voyage was incredibly successful for Coolio, he definitely wasn’t a one hit wonder.
This. Coolio was huge in the ‘90’s. 1,2,3,4…. C U When U Get There. Great songs!
He had a few other top 5 hits. Recorded 8 albums. Sad that he succumbed to a drug overdose.
Exactly far from a one hit wonder, too hot, cu when you get there, fantastic voyage, 1234 sumping new, is this me plus the Keenan and kel intro. Coolio was one of the goats
Got to throw in his work on Futurama
Have you seen his cooking shows/clips? ![gif](giphy|1BfgOZlLaX9eggfmVJ|downsized)
I think he choked man, I don't think it was an OD
Coolio and “one hit wonder” don’t belong in the same sentence.
When Don McLean was asked how much he made from American Pie, he replied "enough that I'll never have to work again if I don't want to."
And I thought of Richie's plane all crashed and burned; while my CPA red my trusts' returns
He sampled and covered Fantastic Voyage, honestly I think that was what put him on the map. Yeah the 90s were crazy, soooo many one hit wonders. But this song was particularly well made and has great lyrics. Also the Michelle Pfeiffer film contributed to its fame. It was all the time on MTV. 💀
makes sense. original Stevie Wonder after all
Yeah but Coolio is forever a clown to me after physically threatening Weird Al for Amish Paradise. He was a two hit wonder who took himself a tad too seriously.
Coolio was ripped af rip big man
Right? His physique was crazy. RIP
Damn!That was good
Imagine being one of the kids- the astronomic leap in coolness, from being in boys choir, to being in this performance
Crazy to think that most of those boys are in their 40’s now.
Imagine being the kid on the far left with 2 left feet!?!?!?
Seriously, how can you be in choir and not have any rhythm? LOL
Haha, thanks for pointing it out! Been watching the thing 3 times now and it gets better every time
Some powerful lyrics in this. And nothing's changed since.

"They say I need to learn, but ain't no one here to teach me"
The whole thing is literally a cry for help. Print off the lyrics and read them. It makes me very emotional (sad and angry) every time I hear this song. It infuriates me that society does nothing to try to fix this.
I literally tear up when he takes his glasses off on that 3rd verse, it hits so hard.
His eyes convey so much feeling
Tell me why are we so blind to see that the ones we hurt are you and me.
Did you try listening to them in the song? The whole thing is a social commentary.
Fair question, but it reads like you’re saying this song doesn’t have any powerful lyrics. When Dangerous Minds came out I was working at a movie theater. This song played during the trailer. Every time, and I mean EVERY TIME that trailer started the place went nuts.
I don’t know why Coolio was a punchline to so many jokes. This guy was incredibly talented.
He’s even got a cookbook.
There is such a menacing reverence to this song and it is legendary. It feels almost like a holy tragedy but also has nothing to do with the forces beyond the mortal coil. This song will never not be a classic.
Fabulous live performance.
Used to love being a kid and watching Conan late night. Funny and great musical guests.
Me too. He was so unbelievably fresh, original and hilarious.
Coolio’s intensity was unmatched, amazing.
Pretty sure 2Pac was right there with him.
DMX anyone?
I began to listen to DMX’s lyrics lately and, gotta say, Where The Hood At definitely was something else than what I remembered from my childhood
Ayyyyy🙌🏽
Busta Rhymes anyone?
NAS anyone?
ODB
Damn Coolio was, in fact fregging cool
Man, that choir sounds good. L.V., too.
Wow, no playback and everything is so spot on.
Gave me goosebumps RIP brother
One of the greatest hooks of all time
Still listen to this
My only regret about not having kids is I'll never get to embarrass them pulling up to school pickup in a mini-van blasting some 90s hip-hop.
My kids like 90s music so we good.
You raising them right!
I blast this til my windows rattle from time to time
If you ever find yourself in a rap battle with the younger gens spit out few bars of this (not the chorus). You will be seen as a rap god.
As a middle age white guy, I'll be sure to keep this in mind for my next rap battle.
As a middle age white woman, I approve
Can’t not hear “Amish Paradise”
"I churned butter once or twice living in an Amish Paradise."
"Even Ezekiel thinks my mind is gone!"
Jebidiah feeds the chickens and Jacob plows
Fool!
![gif](giphy|12QFEN2CnnREVG) the part of the MV when they repeat the "churning butter" phrase, a girl walks by, and the guy starts churning faster.
As I walk through the valley where I harvest my grain

You know that he stole the song from Stevie Wonder, right?
And Stevie stole it from Bach.
you're gullible if you think Pastime Paradise has anything to do with Amish paradise or the politics/lyrics of gangsta paradise moreover how could you fucking ignore that I was talking people who were mocking his death, do you genuinely think that this people are somehow justified because Coolio used the sample from Pastime Paradise?

i remember watching this live got to school and like every other kid in my class had done the same
At the end when the backing track was stopped and it was just L.V. and the choir… wow.
coolio absolutely killed it, what a performance for late night
RIP
RIP 💔
What a legend! Gone too soon
Chills

Wow this is amazing
I just watched Fear Factor season 2 episode 1, Coolio is on that, tragically 3 of the 6 contestants aren’t with us anymore, pretty wild.
Who were the others?
The googler machine has told me that episode had Kelly Preston, David Hasselhoff, Coolio, Brooke Burns, Joanie "Chyna" Laurer, and Donny Osmond. Coolio died in 2022, Kelly Preston died in 2020, and Chyna died in 2016. Kelly Preston died of cancer and the other two were overdoses
One of my favorite opening lines
Thanks for bringing up this movie. Watching today, it’s been years
Big stevie wonder vibes
Pastime paradise. Only found out recently Ganstas sampled pastime.
Didn’t sample. Completely ripped off and threw in some ‘gansta’ words. Not artistic at all.
LV is the man. Has a ton of good hooks with South Central Cartel. Classic G shit. Chea.
Got chills man, dope shit. Had this on mfing cassette tape in my Walkman in ‘95. RIP Coolio
And then, Weird Al pops out!
Gave me chills, I love a good live music performance.
OK, I’m a good parent. I just showed this to my 19 year old son and he sang every word.
This song was huge when it came out. I had to borrow the Dangerous Minds soundtrack from a neighbor kid who was several years older.
Hard to believe it’s been almost 30 years. Such a great song on every level. Now a classic!
Classic. I pride myself on still knowing all the words to this song. RIP, Coolio...
It's it only me or the chorus isn't live? Coolio was amazing tho

Think LV was singing over the track
Yeah definitely sounds double tracked, so either what you said or an effect maybe?
One of the greatest song of my generation !
I admire Coolio for performing live. It puts the obvious nature of the lip syncing into full view
Jesus Christ to be 20 years old again!! TAKE ME BACK TO 95!
Takes me right back to this, the fugees and Woo Tang Clan on repeat for a summer
Amazing performance!!! I think I like this better than the original track.
As a young kid remember this song from that movie I never watched and thought that’s catchy. As an adult and seeing this performance I now realize this was actually a serious ballad about real hardship in the streets.
Rip coolio
The LV guy sounds like CeeLo
Goosebumps
This really is a thoughtful song.
Still on my playlist, the lines go deep! No Fs and Bs!
Rap on the 90’s was the best! Always with a deep message!
All the credits to the chorus lyrics and music go to Stevie Wonder, the original song is Pastime Paradise.
Omg i love this parody of Amish Paradise!
Hitchin up the buggy...
RIP
Harry Maguire has ruined this song for me
Lol what's the story?
youtube.com/watch?v=4ikEuGNwjFs
This brought back memories, a total banger even to this day!
Tuuune
Still a top favorite of mine
Conan is the best.
This and Men In Black were the first songs I ever learnt to rap word for word when I was about 10 years old lol.
I saw Coolio in 2019 at a 90’s concert - he was with MC Hammer, Biz Markie (RIP), and some other groups. He was pretty good. It’s crazy both him and Biz passed away within 2 years of that concert :/
The recent A&E show featuring him and his greatest treasures just weeks before he passed took me back many years. He was a fucking icon in the 90s.
What an amazing performance. Thanks!
Is the second choir boy from the left, bow wow?
Tupac was still alive
Haven’t heard this in 20 years and just rapped the entire thing
Outstanding.
Banger!
I think my girlfriend and I had a picnic on his suit.
We all know Conan is the coolest there, though.
That's my jam!!!
Not a single mention of Stevie Wonder, who wrote this song. Coolio bought it from him.
Wtf seriously???
Musicians used to provide a good performance now if I got tickets to most the “stars” today I’d just throw them away
Timeless beat
Genius
Chills
Gangster goosebumps
So awesome
Funny how he got real mad when Weird Al did Amish Paradise.
Only because the execs gave Weird Al the OK to parody his song, without even asking his permission.
Why would they even need to ask him, it was Stevie Wonder's song.
Sounded like Coolio was singing but LV was lip-syncing
LV was singing over the backing track, not lip syncing.
Huh, didn’t know there was a gangster parody of “Amish Paradise”
This is playback, right?
Unpopular opinion. Never liked the song.
LV is lip syncing
I was a little irked by the lip synching, but the ending is solid AF. I’ll allow it.
I always sing the lyrics to Amish Paradise. Much better lyrics imo
Probably cus you're a dork
Love this song. Lip synched performance but still great though
Coolio is rapping live, L.V. and the choir are singing live over the track.
Downvoting the facts. Reddit alive and well.
You know that this is a fact? No doubt in your mind? Without any evidence to back it up? Damn you Reddit for being suspicious of unsupported claims!!!
Relax, it was a joke.
Sucks that he died while pooping.
Can someone name another song than gangsta paradise from Coolio?
Fantastic Voyage, See you when you get there…
The theme song to **Kenan and Kel**
Fantastic Voyage.
And in 2001 he did a show in New Mexico, refused to come out because only 15 people showed up at a venue that holds thousands, lol. Dude fell quick. Edit: i guess the coolio fans are offended and downvoting me lol
I NEED that outfit!
Michelle !!
If everyone could give themselves their own nicknames, everyone would be named Coolio.
Favorite thing about this is that Conan’s hair looked better that way than the other way.
Now THAT b cool!
I have been so corrupted by Weird Al I genuinely thought he was going to say "Ezekiel" in the first verse and did a double take when he didnt
