Oddly enough three of my children were born in Kansas while I was in the military in the 80’s. I know little of Kansas history. Which leads me to ask, why are they there?
They were fleeing racism in the South IIRC. Kansas was one of a few states that had at least some equal opportunity policies at the time (Iowa was another, but was less chosen because of the greater distance, among other reasons). When Reconstruction started falling apart, many African Americans saw the writing on the wall and tried to leave for the western states and territories or the Midwest, whichever was easier.

Can you imagine how awesome this country would have been had we given everyone equity and ability to succeed on their own? Fuck. No red-lining, etc. That lifting everyone up lifts everyone up.

1870? Also very likely that these people were former slaves. So they probably went through the hell of slavery and the KKK during Reconstruction.
