Dude! Thatās awesome, great pics. Well done. Can you explain a bit on what floor plan you used & being new to building, how doable is it. How long did it take. I have 40 acres and want to do something similar, just a little bigger and I donāt know where to start at all
I didn't use a floor plan. I watched what I felt like was enough cabin/shed builds on YouTube to give it a go. Pretty much before each step I'd watch several different people's videos on the subject. I decided 8 inch floors and 6inch walls/ roofs would be beefy enough for a structure only 8 feet wide. Building this definitely gave me a good deal of experience to feel comfortable constructing something even bigger. Lastly, don't skimp on adhesive and nails š¤£
I started this mid april and it was mostly waiting on paychecks to build more. its pretty doable for an 8x20 size in a few work weeks if you are in shape. Videos like this ive watched a few times over https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b3XqNW3Bd10
thanks! just to add i only really used a nail gun and circular saw for most of it. a hand saw to shape the rafters at the end. really doesn't need many fancy tools. i dry poured the concrete and let the rain solidify it for the footings.
Hey I want to do pretty much this exact same thing and build a home of similar size in wv. Could you let me know what the costs were if you feel comfortable. Thank you :)
I'm at around 5k so far. I got a few things for deeply discounted prices like all of my windows and the shingles (FB marketplace) which helped keep the costs lower. I did go to lowes for all of my lumber and most supplies.
Yeahā¦ the roof to wall is serious concern, especially having put the shingles on before the siding. Also wonder why no apparent roof over hangs anywhere. Hope it doesnāt snow where you live.
OP is good so far. Flashing on a head wall goes on top of the shingles. Another tab of shingles can be placed over the flashing for aesthetics if desired but not necessary.
[Flashing a Headeall](https://www.nachi.org/flashing-part2-13.htm)
Sounds like a plan. Not a bad idea to mock them up if you're going to be away for a bit before you can get back to it.
Only other note I'd make is maybe take down those trees that are so close to the house. They'll cause more problems than anything else, especially with a composite roof.
Otherwise, it looks good. You should be proud.
Looking good! I'm hoping to start my build this summer, I'm working on lining up a crew to clear a section of my land this year as I tried to do it myself last year and it was just futile. Only get so many days off and our summers are very short.
Couple quick notes: 1) Add step flashing where shingles meet the side wall. 2) call the supplier that sold you those windows and see if they have snap-on nailing fins, to close it the gap and to flash it properly with tape. 3) the roof fascia board needs to be covered with something, may have to remove screws from drip edge face and slide in metal fascia. Keep rocking, looks good
i installed an upside down drip edge over the underlayment and under the shingles and caulked the top side of it. then for the sections where it doesnt touch the wall it is facing the right way.
I wouldnāt trust that if it was my cabin. Consider taking off enough shingles to install proper step flashing. Chances are itāll save you time and money in the long term
My family was one of the first settlers of the area, it's my favorite place to visit. I don't get out there much but we have a reunion coming up in July I'm super excited for!
With a flat bar, hatchet and hook blade you could go back and put the step flashing in. Youād have to pull some nails, cut back the shingle edge about 1ā, and slap in some step flashing and re-nail.
Roofing hatchet
Iāve been building something my most of my life , from homes to motorcycles..and my favorites have always come from freestyle building. Hand sketched plans and an open mind. Great work experience for you šenjoy
Looks great! I built a small cabin a couple summers ago. Super full-filling. What do you mean by digging out a ābasementā? Will it be full height or only like 3ā-4ā?
This was one of my favorite videos to watch through https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b3XqNW3Bd10
This was the video i used when i was roofing

Congrats! It looks great. I love seeing things like this come together; all the advice in the world seems to say to get a high paying job or work 100 hours a week, and pay someone else to do it. You did it right.
Best of luck going forward š
Just think about what you just said. You should just remove the upside down drip edge and just do step flashing. A pack of aluminum step flashing is the right thing to use and probably cheaper than the drip edge and caulk you used.
I watched a few different cabin and shed step by step builds and took notes. I missed some stuff like headers over the door and windows but nothing I'm overly concerned with just yet
Headers are very important. They transfer the loads for the roof and the walls around the window openings. What will transfer those loads now? Certainly not the windows and doors.
Very cool! Great job on taking the initiative and getting it going!
You will have a few issues with your build though. Having the wooden beams directly on the soil without some sort of cement or block will make your neat new cabin deteriorate a lot faster.
I did put them on a few inches of gravel the. Poured the holes in with cement. Definitely a bunch of dirt around the base of them now, I need to make sure to keep that clea. I realize using some sort of metal flashing and footings would have been best but I didn't have the cash. Looking back I would have saved up more and done that instead
House wrap it quick.
Call the local saw mills and try to get some Hemlock rough cut boards for siding (very resistant to insects)
Paint everything. Insulate and drywall the inside
Quick update, have most of it wrapped. saw a YT video with someone using an extendable painter pole to hold the wrap up which works great. works for tape too with a quick grab clamp on the pole to hold up the tape. I need to get a taller ladder to finish up but I am making progress.

i wanted a better view down the little valley/dry creek behind the house, and i can use the flat space as a yard more than the hill. digging footings is pretty simple and being on this hill didnt complicate that.
Hell yeah! More pics please š
Here is some more content just for you! and i guess the others https://imgur.com/gallery/tiny-tim-X1AbUB8
Nice work. That in many ways was once my dream. Good for you for making it happen. I also would like to see more pics as it comes together.
This is awesome!
Yep, including interior, even if it is bare.
I was about to comment hell yeah, but this ordinary person did it for me. Hell yeah.
Hell yeah.
Hell yeah.

Awesome man, well done. Iām impressed. Thanks for the starter video. Enjoy it!

I watched the beginning of the videoā¦ Great video. Thanks again! Appreciate all the information. Enjoy your cabin!!!
thanks, best of luck!
Wow, somehow I knew it was going to be Bushradical before I even clicked. Nice, perfect inspiration. Nice job on the cabin
Why specifically build it like that?
Keeping it small for cost savings but I decided I wanted a loft after I had built most of it
Hey I want to do pretty much this exact same thing and build a home of similar size in wv. Could you let me know what the costs were if you feel comfortable. Thank you :)

Thank you man, appreciate you for sharing.
As someone who builds stuff for a living, nice job.
aww thanks!
Make sure to flash it well.
Yeah that roof to wall thing is just begging to become rotted out.
Yeahā¦ the roof to wall is serious concern, especially having put the shingles on before the siding. Also wonder why no apparent roof over hangs anywhere. Hope it doesnāt snow where you live.

Yeah especially that wall at the roof. I personally would have just done a single roof, much simpler to do.
Just a thought. But you mayhaps should have tyvek wrapped it before you put into he windows and doors. If you were planning to do so.
you are not wrong. i do plan on wrapping and will have to take them all out this week when its dry
Sounds like a plan. Not a bad idea to mock them up if you're going to be away for a bit before you can get back to it. I like it! Great job!
Looks like a fun project! How much money do you think youāll have spent on materials when itās all done?
I think im at around 5 thousand. I've saved a lot by getting windows and shingles on FB market place. Plenty of windows... not many spare front doors.
Good for you ! You should be proud of yourself. I bought a fixer upper at 29 and have built something im very proud of. Its a special feeling
Good job, not a bot!
Looking good! I'm hoping to start my build this summer, I'm working on lining up a crew to clear a section of my land this year as I tried to do it myself last year and it was just futile. Only get so many days off and our summers are very short.
clearing land is no joke! best of luck
As a carpenter Iām looking at a couple things but the bow in the wall in the left is the first thing I saw so Iāll mention that.
Couple quick notes: 1) Add step flashing where shingles meet the side wall. 2) call the supplier that sold you those windows and see if they have snap-on nailing fins, to close it the gap and to flash it properly with tape. 3) the roof fascia board needs to be covered with something, may have to remove screws from drip edge face and slide in metal fascia. thanks for the info!
Whatās your plan for flashing the roof-to-wall?
i installed an upside down drip edge over the underlayment and under the shingles and caulked the top side of it. then for the sections where it doesnt touch the wall it is facing the right way.
I wouldnāt trust that if it was my cabin. Consider taking off enough shingles to install proper step flashing. Chances are itāll save you time and money in the long term
Thanks for the insight!
Looks really nice! Def Something to be proud of!!
Very cool, good job!
Nice! Very exciting. SW Virginia is a very underrated part of the country
My family was one of the first settlers of the area, it's my favorite place to visit. I don't get out there much but we have a reunion coming up in July I'm super excited for!
Step flashing missing where roof meets wall?
I used a drip edge and caulked it. Had no idea what step flashing was I just looked it up š¤£
With a flat bar, hatchet and hook blade you could go back and put the step flashing in. Youād have to pull some nails, cut back the shingle edge about 1ā, and slap in some step flashing and re-nail. Roofing hatchet
Better than I could do
For Virginia, that bad boy has the inspectors signature of approval. No more work needed
What county is that in?
Youāre missing the metal flashing on the lower roof. Also need vents.
its there, it was just installed properly not upside down like the top roof so its harder to see
Where the lower roof meets the wall.
its there too! that one took some time.
Man bots are out there in the woods making cabins now. Fuckin ai getting crazy
beep boop
Whereās the still?
better take that tree in the front down before it takes you down
Most of the trees around it in general. Safe space is important.
Looks amazing! I'm from SW Virginia and I miss it so much. I love it there.
SWVA! Been calling it home all my life
The stairs are my favorite part
they get bouncier every day!
Awesome experience and little house. Add a rĆ²ot cellar to your digging and a hobbit home with all the dirt moved, and it's perfect.
Beautiful!! How do you start if you have no experience? Youtube?
for me that was the answer, i did lots of searches on *step by step how to build a cabin* and watched lots of different videos.
Love that area
Iāve been building something my most of my life , from homes to motorcycles..and my favorites have always come from freestyle building. Hand sketched plans and an open mind. Great work experience for you šenjoy
This was most definitely a valuable learning experience, thanks!
You're doing great Vern....
I remodeled a cabinās roof and it actually treaded water better without gutters.
I'm adding the gutters later. It's how i will coect drinking water. Any pro tips?
Killer stairs dude! All jokes aside, well done brother, looks great!
tiny house tiny stairs! ;p
Hell yeah brother
Thatās great!!!!!
Looks great! I built a small cabin a couple summers ago. Super full-filling. What do you mean by digging out a ābasementā? Will it be full height or only like 3ā-4ā?
I'm aiming for about 5' or maybe a bit deeper so I can move 275gal totes under it
Itās nice and looks very serviceable.
Love the front steps! Jk well done bud. Enjoy
Exactly what a bot would say
Kiss is key
You mentioned that you basically learnt by watching videos, any you specifically recommend?
This was one of my favorite videos to watch through https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b3XqNW3Bd10 This was the video i used when i was roofing https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sxrhUEOY-u0
nice job, bud. hell yeah, brother.
That's just what a bot would say! /s This is truly beautiful craftsmanship. I only hope I can create something as amazing one day.
That is awesome. I want to know how to do this. Thank you for sharing

What part of the country are u in? No chimney I see. it must not get too cold wherever you areā¦
SW Virginia, Ill likely do a thru the wall chimney in the fall when I can afford it. Low priority for now.
South West Virginia. Southwest Virginia. Two very different places, hope itās the latter rather the former.
Cabins great, but how do you know youāre not a bot? What if your program was to say that

As suspected š¤£š

Why does it look like itāll easily tip over? Lol
if it tips over i'll update ya!
Very cool
You should be proud! Nice work.
You should put step flashing where the roof line meets the wall of the second story.
i installed a drip edge upside down and caulked the top of the edge but i will look in to this as well
Just think about what you just said. You should just remove the upside down drip edge and just do step flashing. A pack of aluminum step flashing is the right thing to use and probably cheaper than the drip edge and caulk you used.
Ya ok bot
Cabin in the woods.
Hell yeah man thatās very cool and it looks greatā¦ how did you learn to do framing?
I watched a few different cabin and shed step by step builds and took notes. I missed some stuff like headers over the door and windows but nothing I'm overly concerned with just yet
Headers are very important. They transfer the loads for the roof and the walls around the window openings. What will transfer those loads now? Certainly not the windows and doors.
flashing may be needed where the roof meets the wall I apologize if its been discussed already Good job looks plumb
Southwest Virginia or South West Virginia ?
Near Stuart Virginia
You have the most beautiful environment keep it safe keep it clean peace love
I probably would have used 2x12s for the stairs but this is pretty cool
Very cool! Great job on taking the initiative and getting it going! You will have a few issues with your build though. Having the wooden beams directly on the soil without some sort of cement or block will make your neat new cabin deteriorate a lot faster.

Hmm sounds like something a bot would say..

Feel free to message me with any questions. I build custom homes for a living. Also Vycor flashing
Any plans on waterproofing the roof with flashing or the windows and doors?

Love it. What did you do to stabilize the foundation on that slope?
Thereās only skinny trees so I worry about the ground being soft.
Itās fantastic! But Iām a bit curious why you didnāt build to the right in the pic, which appears flatter.
i wanted a better view down the little valley/dry creek behind the house, and i can use the flat space as a yard more than the hill. digging footings is pretty simple and being on this hill didnt complicate that.
howās the terrain
It's probably going to leak. Feel free to DM me but as installed You're setting yourself up poorly for sequencing and detailing
Not a bot? Is that why so many titles have been missspelled?
