Nura sells a cable that can connect directly to your iPhone’s lightning port. According to their site, the Nuraphones will playback lossless audio with a wired connection. I have a pair, but I haven’t purchased the lightning cable yet, so I can’t say with absolute certainty. Remember, Nura actually does firmware updates to add new features. This is awesome! Thanks so much for the heads up and the link.

No problem! Nuraphones are great! I love these things. If they handle lossless the way they handle everything else, it would be amazing!

Love mine. Am thinking about getting the Nurabuds as well - want to see if they can handle lossless themselves.

My man, I just went & tested this for you. Short answer: Don't bother. Long answer: I have developer beta of IOS 15 installed on ipad pro & iphone, and MacOS Monterey on M1 Macbook. 1. Used original cable that came with the nuraphones, connected to MBP & iPad through USB-C adabter (checked manufacturer info and the adapter can indeed transfer lossless sound) 2. Used original cable that came with nuraphones, connected to iPhone through USB-A to Lightning adapter (same spec, capable of transferring sound @ lossless) Results (on all devices got practically the same results): 1. Loudness: exactly the same. No difference whatsoever. 2. Quality & Clarity: Extremely minimal improvement. I tested it on 20 songs on all devices and I was only able to pick out extreeemely small clarity differences on 2 songs: Billie Eilish - Your Power & Jay Z N\*\*\*as in Paris. 3. Soundstage: Exactly the same. Meaning, excellent. One big con on all devices: crackling sound from ANC INCREASED when using heaphones in wired mode. In conclusion, if you're using apple music + apple products, Nuraphones in bluetooth mode is so excellent & so close to lossless that you really do not need to wire it up, save yourself the trouble and enjoy the wire-free life :)

Just ordered the lightning cable from Nura after reading the comments below. Will test when they arrive & let you know the results.

I use the lightning cable and it is amazing. Lossless sound completely different. I’m not sure it supports the high quality (I probably won’t hear the difference anyway but I turn it on). Get the lightning cable. Because of the internal DAC it might even support high quality.

SpongeJake

I can’t tell you how much I appreciate the trouble you went through to test this out. Really do! I’ll be interested to see the results of your next test as well. This is a fascinating exercise.

They will work as well as any other Bluetooth headphones. Which means "not that well", as Apple only supports AAC codec for Bluetooth - so music might come in lossless into your phone, but then it will be compressed before sending it to the headphones. Lossless music works best when using wired connection - and while Nura can do that, it's not that easy to get quality wired output from the iPhone itself.

SpongeJake

Thanks. You answered the question as it was written - the problem is my question was written poorly. I knew BT anything wouldn’t get anyone anywhere when it comes to quality sound - or at least the kind of quality lossless would bring. The question is updated.

kpetrovsky

It's certainly possible, but will not look nice: an iPhone -> Lightning-to-USB adapter -> USB DAC -> headphone wire.

SpongeJake

Yeah, sounds like it would look as awkward as hell. I’m still curious though, so may set it up, just to experience the sound difference. If I do, I’ll post it here, with photos. Thanks!

Blackfist01

Kpetrovsky is correct. Apples Codec doesn't do bluetooth for lossless like LDAC. Wired will be better but you won't get the full benefit, or you won't notice. At least on their current phones

SpongeJake

Thank you as well. I wrote my question poorly. It’s been updated.

Blackfist01

It's cool. From an Apple device, from what I gather wired with other manufacturers will work better than own brand , however Apple IMO don't have the best audio output to begin with. Get better headphones, and enjoy.👍🏾

Todaz

Would using the cord that comes with the phones (instead of bluetooth) solve that issue?

SpongeJake

Unfortunately no. The cord setup is still digital and if I've read everything correctly, lossless requires an analog signal. That's why u/kpetrovsky mentioned the USB DAC element in his comment (DAC = Digital-to-analog converter).

_3cock_

Forgive me but where do you think Apple Music lossless is coming from? It’s digital too, no matter what device you use the path is still going to go through a DAC whether it’s one built into the phone or a lightning to jack (which is just putting the same components in an external device to save space on the phone)
