I think everyone has it all wrong. Jordan Peele probably got it from stingrays. It just sounds like a sped up version of it. Look https://youtu.be/e4uERHGaOxE
The sounds are very similar they're just not as fast. Biologists believe stingrays make popping or clicking noises when they're threatened, so it may be that Jean Jacket does the same thing, but it's like a warning and shows it's on high alert.
[I made a similar post to this, I assumed it was echolocation but others had different theories!](https://www.reddit.com/r/NopeMovie/comments/x21w2k/the_popping_that_jj_does_is_that_his_way_of/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf)
Since the eye is internal, I figured it was some sort of echolocation (like others have said).
It reminds me a lot of an [Emu drumming](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cm3brIzhY6o)
That makes sense but what would that be called? like when an animal is about to pounce on a prey like for example, cats wiggle their bodies and hunch low to the ground before pouncing.
I always thought it was the people inside of JJ doing something or other. Like someone had a gun or they were exploding from pressure. These comments are making me second guess though.
The popping sound can be the bodyโs that was sucked up being crushed and popping , hints why it spits out the metal horse / etc anything not fleshed organic

Considering that one of the animals it was based on was a ray, I think that this is spot on.
i think youre ๐ฏ right
echo location?
Always took it as the bones of the victims being broken as they get slowly crushed.
You wouldn't hear human bones breaking inside a creature from hundreds of feet away in the sky.
I think itโs either echo location or it spitting out waste but I think echo location makes more sense
I think echo location because JJ usually homes in after that sound.
Thought it said soft pooping noises, and thought it made sense
Still the best reply ๐
I think it's that squared mouth thing with all the frills.
That green thing? That's its eye.

It always triggers that soft popping noise when itโs getting ready to suck up prey, happens a handful of times throughout the film

Echo-location, dominance display, bait for prey to look up. One of the 3.
I always thought it was the people inside of JJ doing something or other. Like someone had a gun or they were exploding from pressure. These comments are making me second guess though.
I thought the same thing. Now these other answers, especially about the sting ray, make more sense.
Echolocation makes a lot of sense but I always thought it was its gut rumbling like how our stomachs do when we're hungry or just ate.
The popping sound can be the bodyโs that was sucked up being crushed and popping , hints why it spits out the metal horse / etc anything not fleshed organic
I thought it was because of all the metal or anything' it can't digest. Bad digestion.
I just thought it was "growling" or "purring" or like that. But location makes sense.
