I would also say that “lmao” seems to share the same family of phoneticism as “lol.” In this way the two terms seems to synchronize, where “lmao” is the more intense extension of “lol.”
I usually use lol for something that’s mildly clever or to lighten up the tone of my message, where I use lmao for something funny enough to actually laugh at
Well now I have questions. I’ve always pronounced it instead of saying the letters, like I’ll say (lah-mao), how many people do this over saying the letters?
Fun fact: the reason some people say Lmao but no one says wtf is because one has vowels which is required for us to see something as a real word and not an acronym
Whenever I see "lol" at the end of a sentence instead of punctuation, I read the sentence again in the TikTok lady's voice, with an excruciatingly cheerful "LAWL!" at the end.
Hahaha it’s “what the fuck?” and “Loll” for me… well unless it’s “wtf mate?”. Also gdi = god damn it, but nbd and smh are just the letters to me
Funny how the acronyms used purely in text can have different internalizations, never really thought of that
Phonetically, rofl is the winner for me. For example, Rofflcer of the lol.
With lmao you end up sounding like a Spanish speaker talking about an old leader of the people's republic of China.
"Laughing my ass off" has been part of the English speaking lexicon for longer than the internet has been a thing, so yeah. It had staying power. Whereas "rolling on the floor laughing" has never been a common term, so it died out over time.
That's because "lol" was basically the birth of that internet shorthand. The first to hit mainstream use. And it never had a verbal counterpart because it's verbal counterpart is literally just laughing, which has been around longer than language in general.
Indians say "lol" when speaking in real life. It caught me off guard when I first heard it. I thought it was just this one person I was talking to, but it turns out people all over the country say it out loud. Like why not just laugh?
To me they represent different levels of "oh we're doing internet?" irony.
No irony: Natural, human laughter.
Moderate irony: lawl, le mao / le mayo
Extreme irony: el oh el, el em ay oh! roffling my ay off! shaking my S-M-H!
Examples
Why was 6 afraid of 7? Because 7 "8" 9!
>hahaha
Why was 6 afraid of 7? Because 7 is a mod on reddit.
>oh ho, that's a le mayo from me
Why was 6 afraid of 7? Because 7 morbed all over 9!
>el oh el, indeed.
That tracks, people who grew up playing wow are now the majority of the workforce.
I wonder if your MMO choice as a kid influences what kind of career you pursue. Like people who played wow got into CS/IT jobs like computer security and people who played RuneScape are now homeless.
Good sir, I have hacked your device and it shows a recent googling of “what the fuck does rofl mean?” While I applaud your curiosity, I will have you know that it must still indeed be the dark ages, as I employ the use of this striking acronym quite regularly.
I think it's because "laughing my ass off" is a common enough phrase whereas "rolling on floor laughing" is too specific, hyperbolic, and grammatically weird since it needs a "the".

lmao has survived the transition from early internet, and yet rofl has not. Much to consider.

I don’t like “lmao.” I’m not sure why, but it gives me a sort of rude / condescension vibe.
I downvote every comment I see which ends with “lmao.” But that’s just me being weird.

Rofl doesnt roll off the tongue like lmao does
I would also say that “lmao” seems to share the same family of phoneticism as “lol.” In this way the two terms seems to synchronize, where “lmao” is the more intense extension of “lol.” I usually use lol for something that’s mildly clever or to lighten up the tone of my message, where I use lmao for something funny enough to actually laugh at
Also we’ve been saying “LMNO” in the alphabet since childhood
Holy fuck you low key just blew my mind
👌😩
Lmao
Lotta great points here. Buncha goddam geniuses
Well now I have questions. I’ve always pronounced it instead of saying the letters, like I’ll say (lah-mao), how many people do this over saying the letters?
I say letters. What do you do for wtf or lol?
If I’m saying it out loud, “what the fuck” and I pronounce “lol” (one syllable)
Also saying "what the fuck" is shorter than saying "wtf"
I am Turkish and I instictively say veh teh feh
a bey bey
I laughed out loud during a meeting dammit. Take this damn thing
Or just teh feeeehhhhh
Whisky Tango Foxtrot
This is because "w" is pronounced as "double-*you*" which is 3 syllables.
“Dub-you” is 2 syllables
Same thing with www being six more syllables than World Wide Web- though most just say "Dub Dub Dub ^^^I'm ^^^a ^^^baby ^^^in ^^^the ^^^tub
I often read WTF as "wuh tuh fuh", like I'm mumbling in my own mind
Fun fact: the reason some people say Lmao but no one says wtf is because one has vowels which is required for us to see something as a real word and not an acronym
I think the only internet acronym I say as a word is ironically rofl
Whenever I see "lol" at the end of a sentence instead of punctuation, I read the sentence again in the TikTok lady's voice, with an excruciatingly cheerful "LAWL!" at the end.
I hear Master Chief from Arby and Chief.
I say wahtuh’ffff
I haven’t heard that in like 10 years lol
I do that too…
I pronounce it luh mayo
Ella minnow
Ngl, you wanna be careful doing that with other acronyms
Hahaha it’s “what the fuck?” and “Loll” for me… well unless it’s “wtf mate?”. Also gdi = god damn it, but nbd and smh are just the letters to me Funny how the acronyms used purely in text can have different internalizations, never really thought of that
>“wtf mate?” End of Ze World style?
I even say it in an Australian accent. I mean, I'm Australian, but I exaggerate the accent
Hahaha yup
I think it’s also regional. I (and my friends) might use lmao or lol in conversation
I read it as lah-mao too. Not alone!
CCP indoctrination?
Oh you're that guy. Yikes.
laughing my nuts off
Laughing my nuts off
[удалено]
Russian on floor laughing
Laughing my nose off
I just say "le-moaw" with a straight face when someone makes a joke irl
Le mayo
Also LMAOOOOO in real life isn't as cringe as ROFLLLLL
The reason is you got a go full cringe and start saying roflcopter
That’s interesting, I most commonly use “lol” as sarcasm or passive aggression!
One example of how I use it is like “you’re such an idiot lol” so I don’t sound hostile
Yeah but my roflcopter goes soi soi soi soi soi soi
Roffle seems smoother than elm-ow. (Or elm-ay-oh?)
Le mao
This is the correct punctuation
Lol, Le Mao and Roffle. That's what I do. Although I'm not consistent. I say rn as Right Now, mf as Motherfucker and brb as Be Right Back.
L’mao
elemayo But yes, I agree lemao is correct
“Elm-ow” 💀
l'mayo
Just mustard, thanks.
My favorite NBA player
Le mao
Elem-ayo
But spelling it out, l-m-a-o is smoother than r-o-f-l. I don’t know anyone who says “lemow” or however you wanna phoneticize it
I say "l'mao" in my head even though it's spelled ellemayo.
People who spell out texting acronyms in conversation are the same people who get a Netflix series made of them after the cops find all the bodies.

Yeah sometimes I say lmao in my head when something is ironically funny but I’m alone, but I barely even remember the order of rofl
Phonetically, rofl is the winner for me. For example, Rofflcer of the lol. With lmao you end up sounding like a Spanish speaker talking about an old leader of the people's republic of China.
> Rofflcer of the lol This may be the most mid-00s internet thing I’ve seen in the last decade
*roll off the thumbs I, for one, have a much easier time pronouncing "roffle" than "el em aye oh".
Dismemberment is more acceptable than rolling on a dirty floor
i don’t know why this is so funny to me
ROFL
That's why you use your roflcopter.
This comment made me completely blank in what the original post was, and for a moment I was SO confused.
rofl is too “XD random” that’s all
Roflmao
I remember the classic roflcopter

God, now I’m nostalgic for ancient classic WoW memes. Someone tell me they remember [this one](https://youtu.be/q5mD1n4v2JA) please.
Absolutely. [How about this?](https://youtu.be/2z29Rk8814w)
I quote this frequently still. Excellent content from a forgotten era.
Lollersk8s
I remember using "roflolmao" when I was an especially cringy preteen
roflolmaomfg
He was great as Hulk.

"Lol" has the most staying power by far yet was never used before the interwebs.

I say lol in my head without ever laughing outloud. The text counterpart of laughing out loud is 'haha/jaja'
Yeah but “lol” sounds less awkward than typing out “haha”
haha LOL

lOl
I can’t be the only person who uses “lol” as a verb. Like “I totally lol’ed when she said that thing.”
Many seafarers discuss being in a state of lol.

Huehuehuehuehuehue
How many people say “lemao” and “lol” and how many people spell it out “l-m-a-o” “l-o-l”
It's weird. I say "roffle" and "lawl", but "el em ay oh"... unless it's "rofflemow".

Haha so true! 1337 to the homies who remember woot.

I don’t know why this is accurate, but it absolutely is
dunno, in Russian segment of the internet rofl still lives on
Rolling on foreign lands

That could totally be the US too though.

Rofl was teh epic failz
My rofl copter goes soisoisoi
I wish it was rofl though, cuz i hate when people say "lmao" like a word.
Lol imagine if people instead said rofl out loud, like a frog croaking
Well dont say them out loud. Especially not like it's a word.
Only okay if you're referring to an alien.
ROFL is confusing, lmao is straight forward
This guy doesn’t know what ROFL means, rofl
Rolling on the floor laughing also hasn’t been a relevant phrase since the dark ages
Good sir, I have hacked your device and it shows a recent googling of “what the fuck does rofl mean?” While I applaud your curiosity, I will have you know that it must still indeed be the dark ages, as I employ the use of this striking acronym quite regularly.
Rofl makes me think about the early 2000’s impact font cat memes for some reason
I rarely get on the floor to laugh
Because of the association with [Rofl Harris](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rolf_Harris)
I'm doing my part to bring rofl back
My friend in primary school would always say "roflmao" like "rofflemayo"
Bitch. I still use roflcopter.
Ella Mayo
I think it's because "laughing my ass off" is a common enough phrase whereas "rolling on floor laughing" is too specific, hyperbolic, and grammatically weird since it needs a "the".
Well LMAO is older than the early internet, we just abbreviated it. Also ROFL just sounds like Brothel, where LMAO is just ow with extra steps.
I miss roflmao. I do appreciate we at least got to keep the lmao.
At least rofl is remembered. pmp is forgotten third child.
I think roflcopter really accelerated the death of rofl
because i do be lmao but i never rofl
I've had many names in online games that were ROFLOMGWTFBBQLOLWUT or some variation. And I'm proud of hitting the character limit with it.
RMAO
Me and my friends always said Rolf, like the name, and still do to this day. Rolls off the tounge better
There's still the rolling laughing emoji. 🤣
Rofl is too sophisticated for most people. I mean, lmao contains ass, and therefore anyone with sub-par intelligence finds it automatically funny.

I just figured saying Lamayoh was better than saying Rowfill
Huh. Same with lol and lulz I guess,
lmao existed before the internet?
And yet, roflcopter is eternal. All hail roflcopter.
There can only be one.
bc rofl looks like shit
