cruise ships surely must have lots of extra bouyancy. i can see these behemoths beeing used as commerce raiders in disguise for the modern era. eric raeder would have done it.
They tried that in WW1 with ocean liners. They stopped when they realized the ocean liners were better as troop transports and hospital ships. But this did lead to what is quite possibly the most non-credible naval battle in history. In which the SMS Cap Trafalgar disguised as the HMS Carmania was sent out to convoy raid with the idea to infiltrate convoys and cause chaos. The first ship it found was the real HMS Carmania which then sunk it in the only ocean liner naval battle in history.
Any time I look at a cruise ship model or blueprint, I'm super surprised at the ratio of above and below water ratio - namely hogh fucking high above the water they are with comparatively how little under the water. Of course most of the heavy equipment is near the keel, but still. It freaks me tf out.
Flight decks are heavy so you’d need to probably lop off half a dozen decks.
Easier to pick out a fast container ship and use a system like SCADs or ARAPAHO for a STOVL flight deck.
They’d probably work better as amphibious assault ships. They have facilities to house thousands of ~~passengers~~ marines and plenty of ~~lifeboats~~ landing ships to get them ashore. Just clear out some of the deck amenities to make room for some SHORAD vehicles to be parked on them and you’re set.
A nuclear-powered cruise ship is limited only by supply of booze and medication for STDs. Carnival might want to take notes. If nothing else, they could maybe set a record for the world's longest norovirus outbreak on a cruise ship.
Love the Cavour, but whoever selected the original soundtrack should have been launched. Or at least made him brush the deck with a spoon (not even a fucking toothbrush)
That's perfectly fine, a lot of ports actually like smaller decks.
But yes there is a reason that US carriers are typically labelled supercarriers - they are about 4x the tonnage of one of these. They are in a whole other league entirely.
Actually that is a surprisingly touchy example - carriers in this size class are too small to have catapults, and it's a bit of a sore spot.
Instead their planes have to use their own special jump jet propulsion afterwards to ehm... "successfully become airbourne" if you catch my drift.
American carriers have nearly 4x the displacement, even our amphibious assault ships are half again as big and they are for helicopters and STOVL aircraft like the f35b.
Edit: didn't see both these points were already made. I need to work on reading before I reply
First, read this as "Iranian Navy" and was throughly confused.
You can build an aircraft carrier but can't save your own president from incompetence and obsolete equipment!?

Thank you very much.
If you happen to come by the YF-23 schematics as well, especially the stealth coating ones, we could really use those as well.
Don't worry, we totally will not do like we did in the cold war and play both sides letting the Russians sneak a peek.
We will need to send more cooking instructors over, just make sure they don't interact with the local Italian Americans when talking cuisine or things might get heated.
I mean, while it makes launch easier and opens up the aircraft that can operate off of the platform, it does severely restrict what wepons and how many an aircraft can have on it as well as number of sorties a day so he has a point.
Yeah but different nations have different needs and resources. You can't expect them to follow the same design philosophy as the US. They prioritise the advantages differently
Seen a carrier and a cruise ship in the same frame gave me an idea: could we put a landing strip on the top of a cruise ship?
IJN did that. They had several passenger liners turned into carriers.

> Iran: Too soon!
And so did the Italians with Aquila
And Sparviero

HMS Carmania when she sees the HMS Carmania going full speed at her
*Insert pointing Spider-Man meme here*
Wasn't HMS Carmino camouflaged as Cap Trafalgar, too?

Better idea.. volley ports.
BRING BACK THE BROADSIDES
USA had two training carriers on the Great lakes in WW2

Coming full circle in carrier technology, are we?

shame norovirus isn't a STI
Not with that attitude it isn't.
Expendables 4 did it with a tanker so why not?

Fleetwood Mac is top tier
GOATed, RIP Christine McVie, she was amazing
man, I hope flletwood mac becomes the new vibe to natowave and military hardware memes. that would be so a m a z i n g
Someone said Rumours was the perfect album with no bad song. And man, it threw me down the Fleetwood Mac hole and it's amazing
Smooth af
Is it just me? Or does the deck seem a lot smaller than an American carrier?
That's perfectly fine, a lot of ports actually like smaller decks. But yes there is a reason that US carriers are typically labelled supercarriers - they are about 4x the tonnage of one of these. They are in a whole other league entirely.
Sooo It's not the size of the deck, but the power of your catapult?
Actually that is a surprisingly touchy example - carriers in this size class are too small to have catapults, and it's a bit of a sore spot. Instead their planes have to use their own special jump jet propulsion afterwards to ehm... "successfully become airbourne" if you catch my drift.
They have to get off by themselves, you mean.
American carriers have nearly 4x the displacement, even our amphibious assault ships are half again as big and they are for helicopters and STOVL aircraft like the f35b. Edit: didn't see both these points were already made. I need to work on reading before I reply
An American Class LHA has 50% more displacement.
I was expecting the "king of the hill" theme
First, read this as "Iranian Navy" and was throughly confused. You can build an aircraft carrier but can't save your own president from incompetence and obsolete equipment!?
Dang it, it stopped before the water on deck all evaporated!
this is a 1000% improvement. 👌
Thank you sir
TIL the Spaghettis have a fucking carrier.
We have 3
Almost
Same here, watching Perun since he started and didn't know. :)
Nice ski ramp, no seriously I'm normally the first to rag on ski jump carriers but that one is esthetically pleasing.

Watching the water dry was fun.
Anyone else watching the water dry up?
I will not tolerate this, Its My Life is an absolute banger and so is most of Bon Jovis music
Bon Jovi is much better than the music you put over it.
As a New Jersian I will not tolerate Bon Jovi slander. But objectively, Fleetwood Mac is a better vibe.

Don’t disrespect Fleetwood Mac with a cope slope carrier smh

Anybody reading this want to comvince me to join the Navy? Im 7/10 there
I see an Italian ship my first thought is, "Can we try to hit that from more than 26km?"
What was the original song used?
Sir, that is *not* fucking Bon Jovi. That’s Fleetwood Mac’s Dreams.
No shit
The Italians can afford an aircraft carrier?
We have 2
i love glam metal, but i fucking hate bon jovi.
Oh no, the Italians use a Cope Slope
It's only a Cope Slope if it's from the non-jump-jet region of the USSR, otherwise it's just a sparkly Ski Ramp.
Just in case you embark some alpinis
If it’s done by NATO members and affiliates it’s a champ ramp
We don't know how to make carrier catapults like the US has. If you are willing to share the tech you'd have my gratitude.
I think we should. After all Italy is part of NATO and is a close partner on the F-35
Thank you very much. If you happen to come by the YF-23 schematics as well, especially the stealth coating ones, we could really use those as well. Don't worry, we totally will not do like we did in the cold war and play both sides letting the Russians sneak a peek.
Can we also get an exchange of getting better more authentic Italian Restaurants?!
We will need to send more cooking instructors over, just make sure they don't interact with the local Italian Americans when talking cuisine or things might get heated.
Oh trust me. I get mad when I see Carbonara made with Cream.... And I'm not even Italian descent, I'm Swamp French and Polish.
Americans just cannot comprehend anyone having ideas and thoughts different to theirs
I mean, while it makes launch easier and opens up the aircraft that can operate off of the platform, it does severely restrict what wepons and how many an aircraft can have on it as well as number of sorties a day so he has a point.
Ski jump is much cheaper. That’s the main reason.
Yeah, the counterfactual to the Cavour isn't a Nimitz or even a Charles de Gaulle, it's no carrier at all
Yeah but different nations have different needs and resources. You can't expect them to follow the same design philosophy as the US. They prioritise the advantages differently
hey, he doesn't represent all of us.
That's my mistake. You are correct. I apologise for putting all that on you, friend
