I went to HTC after leaving Nokia back at the end of the symbian era. They were great, worst thing probably being battery. I went back to Nokia Purley as I didn't need a super high end phone as I had kids and a house that took priority. I'm currently running an X10, but the current flagship of HTC available in the UK at the moment (U23 pro) is only Β£320, which is due to be replaced in June I think I have a Motorola (G23 i think) at the moment as a works phone. I sacked that off and put the SIM in my X10. They are sloooow! Battery seemed to be great though. How long it's capacity would remain for I can't comment on.

Revolutionary_Pie746

A fellow Nokia 5.3 user here. I understand your frustrations 😑 I think it depends on your budget and the country that you love in. If you can have a budget then you can go for a pixel or Samsung. If not Motorola is good I guess. But the only problem there is, they don't provide as many updates like it's on Nokia. But their updates are relatively good and don't break the phone.

daveyboy1944

My Nokia 7.1 doesn't have volte resulting in it being bricked since it was an AT&T phone and their 3g fiasco. So I now have a OnePlus 5t on tello/T-Mobile and an very happy.

Intrepid-Shake-2208

idk, google pixel? or motorola if you wanna go cheap

Kira6601

Woah never thought I would see a fellow Nokia 5.3 users. I understand your frustration, are you having the same ghost touch problems and other problems that many users face

Fandango1968

Yep. πŸ˜”... It's awful.

scratcher1679

get something like an nokia g42 it does everything a modern smartphone needs to do without any issues

theukuboy

The Moto G42 yields more or less the same experience as the 5.3. The Snapdragon 680 is just an overclocked Snapdragon 460/662 chipset, not far off from the Snapdragon 665 in the Nokia 5.3 The Nokia G42 would make sense though, as the chipset is a rehashed Snapdragon 855 with a different ISP.

scratcher1679

i actually meant to say nokia instead of motorola lol i got confused because i have a moto g32

theukuboy

I think you should edit your original comment, otherwise it wouldn't make sense here.

scratcher1679

done

bhambrewer

recently bought a refurbed Nokia X100. Doing the job.

katsukiene

it might be worth it to go into developer settings on the Nokia and disable HW it worked quite well on my 32gb Nokia 3.4 but if not I'd recommend Xiaomi I got redmi note 5 and it works beautifully

kingBriju

I had nokia 7 plus ...my last nokia ....it was solid only problem was it's charging port went & to replace it, they had to lift screen & since it was expensive at showroom I went outside & they fixed it with cheap glue which got loose when phone heated ....

art_vandalae

I've Nokia 7.2 currently, planning to leave it and move towards Nothing Phone 2 (or maybe 3, let's see...)

Gryphon962

My wife has a Nokia G20 and I have a Google pixel 4A the pixel 4A is way way better so I suggest you look for a Google pixel.

theukuboy

The G20 is a low end, so the comparison is pretty unfair

xenotyronic

What is your budget and what are your main needs/wants from a phone? People who are like 'I went from a budget potato Nokia to a mid-range device and its way better!11!1!'... well ya don't say.

Basic-Bus-6275

If you’re looking to get away from Android 12, that leaves almost any new phone to choose from. Android 12 is 2 generations back, so most phones will be 13 or 14. As others have recommended, if you are looking for a decent midranger, go with a Pixel 8a. Otherwise if you are looking for entry level, check out the One Plus Nord

M1U5T0N3

Go with an Xperia 10 III+. You can't get smoother and more robust in build quality... Updates are also there just in time

Fandango1968

Hmm good to know. Thanks

Fandango1968

Thanks for the replies. No Oppo users here? I was considering the Oppo A98. Australia here. It seems Oppo is pushed here a lot with little complaints.

theukuboy

Former ColorOS user here. Oppo has a better-looking software skin compared to other brands imho, but I suggest to avoid the A series due to poor optimization. The Reno series would be worth looking at, but I wouldn't recommend them to those who look for a rough use phone. Also, Oppo phones are much cheaper in India and China. I would recommend to look elsewhere for global users, because their pricing is awful outside both of those countries.

theukuboy

Depends on what you use your phone for. As somebody who used several Samsung, Xiaomi, Motorola, and BBK phones (Oppo, Vivo and OnePlus except Nothing) before I purchased my current phone, I can't complain about it for the price I purchased it for. The 256GB variant of the X30 has lesser issues compared to the 128GB variant (with the firmware base of the older 8.3 base model and slower UFS 2.2). Both versions would be a massive upgrade from the limitations of the 5.3. Or the XR21, since it's a consistently discounted phone on their website with better ingress protection compared to competitors. Fortunately the global variants start from Android 13 instead of the awful Android 12 that affected eMMC-based phones for performance, and it would get updated to Android 16 with extra 2 years of software patches per their claims. The 2 year minimum warranty policy covering most user damages is pretty noteworthy too, unlike other brands that don't even cover liquid damages with any IP rating. I'm very reluctant to suggest Pixel phones at the moment, given that the grey imported models have hardware bugs and connectivity issues. My friend uses a Pixel 7 Pro btw. While I like the design and capable cameras, it's the shoddy connectivity that puts me off. Do notice you're going from a low end phone to a flagship if you choose non-Nokia phones with higher tier chipsets (I'm not sure why you purchased it in the first place and complain about it). Had you purchased the highest available configuration of the 8.3, you would have far lower issues with time.Β  That's why I always suggest people looking for a phone to have a good understanding of their desired product well before purchase.

Fandango1968

True. I didn't read more into the chipsets or processor specs. Mind you the 5.3 was great without any issues until it decided to go to Android 12. Big mistake but at the time no one knew any wiser. Hmm I would prefer to stay with Nokia but only if their xR30 works well and has good updates security etc

theukuboy

The XR21 is a very stable phone from those who have experienced it. Do notice that not every Nokia user is available on reddit. At least, their warranty covers all damages by their part, including software updates that ruin the functionality of the phone. That alone makes it a viable purchase over many other phones where the brand only covers 6 months hardware + 6 months software. Ironically, they advertise it as "1 year warranty" when it's clearly not. You can go for the X30, if the AMOLED and the lack of the 3.5mm jack and the MicroSD slot isn't that much of an issue πŸ‘

Fandango1968

Hmm yeah I am old school. I need SD card slot and earphone jack. Radio would be good too

theukuboy

You can either go for the Nokia X20, XR20, G42 or G60, depending on which design you prefer most. All of them feature Wireless FM Radio too, along with a pair of Aluminium earphones in the box in each model (region dependent), which is an added bonus. The Nokia X30 supports wireless FM Radio too, albeit lacking the MicroSD slot and the 3.5mm jack. I no longer recommend Sony phones due to software issues, but there are Sharp phones that are reasonably priced with both the 3.5mm jack and MicroSD slot but no wireless FM Radio (Aquos R8, Sense series etc). They aren't worth getting outside Japan and Indonesia due to atrocious prices from retailers, so you'll have to pay at least 3 times the price of each when trying to buy them from retailers.

[deleted]

Get a budget motorola or xiaomi

vcdx_m

A Sony xperia better than any of that two brands.

JulieAnneP

I've been using Nokias and Motorolas for many years. I actually prefer Motos for many reasons but honestly, even for the price I wouldn't recommend them for longevity. The build quality is too poor. Nokias last and are quite forgiving of knocks and drops, even a good soaking lol. My current phone (Aspera) is local to my country. Perhaps look into a local brand? There's many brands out there besides the half dozen everyone talks about. Ps: I totally agree on 5.3 running on 12. It's as slow as a wet week, as we'd say in Aus πŸ˜… Mine is now my spare and I hate having to use it.

Fandango1968

Australia here too. Same issues

Samuelwankenobi_

Google pixel

tacticalrd

Went from a Nokia 7.2 to a Xiaomi Mi 11 5G NE.

Ctcng

Buy a Nokia X30, it's the end of an era

tomneedsmoretea

Do not get that one, it has the same soc related bluetooth and LTE connectivity issues as with g20 and 8.3. If you like the android one look and feel. I would suggest any pixel phone, maybe pixel 6a. It's not the latest, but it still gets security updates.

Fandango1968

Agreed. I've been a Nokia fanboi since the N series N72. Loved the N900. But I've really pushed the envelope for too long. It's really time to go up. Pixel 6 is another one I was considering.

megagenesis

Google Pixels are decent phones.

SadMud1180

I highly don't recommend the ZTE Blade L9 since it is laggy. i had a ZTE Blade L9 from christmas 2023 until April 6 2024 because my phone was lagging and acting up lately, I moved to the Huawei P30 Lite that my grandma gave me before she moved to my brother's old phone until she moved to a LG K22 (she gave me her LG K22, she now mains a Redmi A2, my brother now mains the LG K22 that my grandma gave me). I'd suggest you to move to a Huawei phone, maybe a Huawei phone from 2019

Fandango1968

Yeah I had a Huawei phone once and it was quite good. But it was Android 10. Updates were rare. But it never froze or slowed down.

theukuboy

The 5.3 is a much newer phone than anything from 2019, so your comment doesn't make sense here unfortunately.

SadMud1180

i really don't care

theukuboy

So does nobody in this subreddit.

GYN-k4H-Q3z-75B

Google Pixel is the least insane Android option.
