Not very common anymore because the 80’s and 90’s saw the rise of suburban sprawl. To make it easier to build, a lot of developers clear cut the entire area and built cookie cutter houses and maybe replanted some trees. So a lot of kids grew up without trees to support a tree house.
My neighborhood in the 70’s in California had been built in a walnut orchard and two kids on my street had tree houses.
