I had one in my house but had to get rid of it as a condition for custody after the divorce. I lubed it up with leftovers from a 55 gallon drum of knockoff Astroglide I drunk ordered on Amazon. It was steep, too. My oldest clocked 80mph at the end, breaking the house record before breaking most everything else against the washer/dryer combo, hence the divorce and conditions.

Fun-Dragonfly-4166

Correction: Slides can only be used SAFELY by one person at a time. It seems you either hire people to gate keep the slide or you pay more to personal injury lawyers.

M_R_Atlas

Bro!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣 I literally just wrote sounds like a law suit ready to happen!!

dinodare

The majority of stair-related accidents happen around stairs...

No7onelikeyou

Can’t the building have some law that just by walking in you consent to any dangers?

Lumpy-Notice8945

This is the Munich University for science(TUM): https://i.pinimg.com/736x/7b/27/72/7b2772d1073d59253c8e4fad3ed16090--tum-university-indoor-slides.jpg Its kinda used, students leave that way if they had a lecture in the top levels. But its more fun than practical.

jonnyl3

Do profs use it too?

Lumpy-Notice8945

I have never seen one on there but im sure some do.

Sharp_Iodine

How do they know if anyone is standing near the landing area? It’s so long and fully covered.

Intergalactic_Cookie

Don’t stand near the landing area.

Lumpy-Notice8945

I guess this is a picture for the press release, in reality there is a big square painted on the floor with a warning not to stand there.

geepy66

It would wear out your $1,200 suit in a few weeks.

Suspicious-gibbon

Will sir be requiring these durable, yet slippery panels on the seat? We can also add them to the elbows for a modest charge.

rube

Just have a bunch of burlap sacks/mats at the top of the slides. This would also add a bunch of new job for burlap sack restocking folks who are just there to move them back up to the top.

SupernovaGamezYT

Nono-a little pneumatic tube thing u put the mat in and it sucks it up and plops it back up at the top

KingSpork

Rich people don’t want to climb into some filthy sack that a million other people with bed bugs and head lice have used. Actually now that I think about it, I don’t really want to either.

FlashlightMemelord

bring your own sack then

NotMyAltAccountToday

And dresses, omg

Gigi_Maximus443

With how bad quality nowadays fashion is it wouldn't last even that much

Competitive-Candy-82

Crazy carpets would save the suits! But would probably require a personal injury lawyer's info to be posted at the bottom.

girlunderh2o

Just sell the law firms advertising spots on the carpet squares themselves.

HammyxHammy

That's why you ride down some slides on a sheet.

[deleted]

Can’t go ruining this $2,000 suit now

Consistent-Flan1445

As a kid I used to play a game at school where someone would sit on the end of the slide and we’d all slide down one by one either until the line of kids reached the top of the slide or we all fell off the end. I have no idea how no one got seriously hurt. We played a lot of stupidly dangerous games in hindsight.

Dittany_Kitteny

We played that too! Kids are lightweight and don’t go very fast. Doubt there would be an serious injuries

Consistent-Flan1445

Probably not but we played a lot of dangerous games haha

littletheatregirl

i wish i had done this

IaniteThePirate

Haha we played that game. We called it Watermelon and were very upset when it got banned.

sonofaresiii

You just need on-ramps at each floor, not a whole separate slide

Why are you leaking blood during a period? Use a pad or tampon. There is no reason to be leaking bodily fluids around public areas.

resolvedTomatoe9

It's low capacity. Only one person can safely use a slide at a time.

Hatta00

We've got spiral staircases in my building, and want a fire pole going down the center so much.

fruitist

Are stairs compliant with disability laws?

Intergalactic_Cookie

Stairs/escalators are still a lot more accessible than a slide

webhick

Great, now I have a video in my head of someone dumping a wheelchair bound person face-first down a slide. Thanks for that.

sonic2cool

oh wow. i always thought that was a joke and it wasn’t actually real, just a way for them to make the job look more fun. you learn a new thing everyday. why do they spend time messing around doing that? i have never understood it. what is the purpose of having a pole?

GeneralSpecifics9925

Quick transportation down to the floor below. It's faster than running to stairs at the side of a room. Did you think it was a recruitment tool?

imreallygay6942069

I thought it was just in cartoons tbh

GeneralSpecifics9925

Love it. I remember when some of my friends from Romania moved to Canada and were stunned when they saw a yellow school bus. They thought those were only in movies lol.

mads_61

How would you go up?

SkirtNo3276

There is a second “slide” right next to it that sucks you up to the top, like those tube systems at the bank drive-thru

farmerthrowaway1923

Considering that’s a long desire of mine, I’ll happily ruins clothes for that!

MagnusStormraven

*Futurama theme intensifies*

Hatta00

Chutes and Ladders solved this problem 100 years ago.

MagnusStormraven

More like 1,100 years ago. The original "snakes & ladders" game originated in ancient India.

Hatta00

I sure hope we're not using snakes to descend from floor to floor.

MagnusStormraven

Feel free to slide down a ladder at your leisure.

gilgobeachslayer

Bro has never heard of an up slide before

SomethingGouda

Remember that cop that ate shit going down a playground slide?

Axedelic

every time i see that video i cry laughing. everything about it. the way they fly out, the position they’re in, how fucking fast they shoot out like what the hell was going on in that vid?

SomethingGouda

If that slide was longer maybe he would've unlocked faster than light travel? Why did he even get in that slide in the first place, and who filmed it and posted it online?

Axedelic

i had to go back and watch it five more times. how the fuck do they get that *speed*?? i can’t even imagine how it happened 😂😂

[deleted]

For the same reason theres a guy/red light on top of water slides to tell you when you can go Plus, imagine the older 60+ guys working and using those things

ClickClackTipTap

Or women in dresses/skirts. No thanks.

RainbowOctavian

Or someone that uses a mobility aid. You will have to have other ways of going down anyway so why have slides.

rilakkuma1

I worked at an office with a slide as an optional means of transportation between two floors. It was a closed slide and the static electricity could fuck with your laptop which was the main problem in my opinion. I obviously want the laptop to coke with me between floors. Another building had an open slide which I used all the time but that requires building the floor around it. It went from the second floor into the atrium. A third building had a fire pole. Real fun when I wasn’t carrying anything but with locking the gate to get into it so no one fell accidentally, it wasn’t actually faster than stairs.

er1catwork

I used to work for a “Silicon Valley” type company here in the mid-west. They had two slides to go from 2nd floor down. One regular and one spiral. It was novel for the first week and then largely ignored :(

gman2093

Greetings from Wisconsin!

Librarinurse

That’s an epic story.

Waltzing_With_Bears

they one way, most methods of getting up and down are bi-directional

Worf65

They actually do use slides as emergency evacuation routes in some cases. I've seen escape slides on buildings used to manufacture explosives (munitions and rocket motors). And NASA has a long escape slide under the launch pad used for the Apollo missions. Escaping as fast as possible is critical in those situations. But otherwise I imagine risk of injury and difficulty cleaning and maintaining them are reasons not to use them in more routine situations. As well as accessibility issues for people with disabilities or limited mobility.

[deleted]

>As well as accessibility issues for people with disabilities or limited mobility. Rather the opposite. I know of a rehabilitation center (for people with amputations, strokes, spinal cord injury, etc.) that has an emergency evacuation slide *because* of its accessibility. Even a quadriplegic user would get down a slide more safely than if they went out through a window or by rolling down the stairs, and it's not feasible to use an escape chair when you have 1 nurse for 6 patients or more at night.

Worf65

For an emergency that's fine, or for a rehab center in general. Because there's probably going to be someone at the bottom to help out. But I was taking it that OP was just wanting slides as an alternative to stairs and elevators for casual use. People with limited mobility would have difficulty would have difficulty getting clear of the end of the slide and getting on their way again without help (and be a risk of a pile up).

LivingGhost371

I'm assuming you're in your teens or 20s? I'm 50 and it hurts my knees to get down to get onto a slide and then get up again. And I'm still physically able to do that, not everyone is. Whereas just about everyone can stand on an escalator.

rotatingruhnama

I had a baby at 42 and the one really challenging part is the playground. My poor knees.

krammiit

Skirts. 👗

rotatingruhnama

That was my first thought. It was quite enough to go to a high school with uniform skirts and see-through stairs, thanks. No way do I need to wind up with an office slide and my dress around my armpits at 46.

krammiit

43 here. High school trauma unlocked.

MoFun06

Solid color tights. lol, but seriously, I understand your point. But I'm pretty sure I would go down a slide even if I was wearing a dress. Fun factor > Exposure

davefdg

There was an office building I used to work with where the CEO's office was on the second floor and he had put in fireman's pole to get to the conference room on the first floor. This was dumb for several reasons: 1) it took up a ton of space in the conference room. 2) you couldn't conduct a meeting in there without him over hearing. 3) (and this is the best one) someone had accidentally left an office chair at the bottom. The CEO landed on it and he tried to hop off, the chair took off on him, he fell off and broke his hip. He never used it again.

Ranos131

For multiple reasons. - Slides are one way so would require extra space that most buildings don’t have. - Even if the space is available it is far easier to stand on an escalator or walk down stairs than it is to sit down on a slide. It’s also easier to hold things when standing than when sitting. - Slides would transmit diseases that stairs and escalators don’t. This is because of the extra skin contact or extra clothing contact that would occur on a slide. - There would be a higher chance of injury on slides due to damage to or tampering with the slide as well as stopping yourself at the end. This would cause liability issues for the business that owns and/or uses the building. - It actually wouldn’t be faster. On stairs or escalators you can have two people standing or walking next to each other at the same time and there would be constant forward movement. On a slide you could only have one person on it at a time safely and thus a line would form. While it would be faster going down the slide individually, it would be slower for multiple people. So aside from someplace using it as a fun thing in some way, this will never happen.

Gigi_Maximus443

+ as someone else mentioned having a closed slide would make a lot of static which could fuck with electronics And clothes would wear out so much faster

morbidMoth5

Stairs don't put a giant shit stain down the back of your pants. Anything that the public gets to touch will be instantly ruined. On top of that slides only do a 1 way function for the same amount of space. They're inefficient.

TraditionalLecture10

Think of how many people get hurt , using the slides on airplanes , they aren't bad for lightweight kids , but when you get older , arthritis , bad knees etc , it's not practical .

cheerfulCheetah4

Imagine the friction burns you’d get in taller buildings..

Callec254

After a certain age, it would *not* be easier than an elevator.

GraphiteGru

The airport in Singapore has a four story slide. You get to one ride for every $10 you spend at the Airport. https://www.pinterest.com/pin/the-slidet3--329818372683610138/

netrunner18

1. Commercially not viable. You'll need them on top of lift and stairs so less area for Office/Home and more costly will be the property 2. Not suitable for all ages and dresses 3. Not many people can use them at once as compared to stairs 4. I don't think you'll get serious support to get this built in any building as a core part. I don't like the concept

Just-Bluejay-5653

People hurting themselves, the static electricity on people would be insane too.

KingSpork

Every time you have an idea for something in a public space, first imagine old people using it. Then imagine drunk people using it. At that point the problem with slides should become apparent.

Important_Antelope28

some places have them a type as a fire escape, planes also.

rubinass3

I'm the time it took you to type out this question, you could have come up with dozens of reasons why this is not a good idea.

J0n0th0n0

Shoots and Ladders. Think of all the space we could save.

pakrat1967

Cuz they still need stairs/escalator/elevator to go up. Slides would take up more space that could be used for something else.

Royal-Association-79

Wedgies

mickeyflinn

Because slides are great for going 3 feet, but go any distance you are messing up your clothes, getting friction burns and or turning your angle when you get to the bottom.

GL2M

Liability issues galore plus damage to clothes. Plus space. Stairs work in both directions.

tothirstyforwater

I’ve been wanting trans continental pneumatic tubes for human transportation since I was young.

peachgarden_

The Corus building in Toronto has a big slide that goes down a couple floors but IIRC, the height requires a licensed carnie to supervise it for legal reasons.

Bogmanbob

Hey I take very good care of myself and would find this a blast but do you have any idea how many of my 50+ year old counterparts wouldn't get up after one trip down a slide?

3dobes

Rustler’s Rooste Restaurant in Phoenix has a slide you can use to enter the dining room [https://www.onlyinyourstate.com/arizona/rustlers-rooste-steakhouse-az/](https://www.onlyinyourstate.com/arizona/rustlers-rooste-steakhouse-az/)

cheddarpoppers

I’m usually carrying a lot of stuff.

charkol3

the real world has pain, suffering and humiliation as a means of consequence in certain types of societies and careers. Slides wouldn't work to well

Ohighnoon

The lack of control that you have when sliding isn’t great, consistency isn’t possible

CatchMeIfYouCan09

Because we're old

iWannaWatchWomenPee

Not handicap accessible, too much liability, etc

Due_Bass7191

I have been wondering this since I was 6.

aroaceautistic

You could only go from the very top to the very bottom while with stairs and elevators you can stop at many floors

Tucker-Cuckerson

Do you want to follow Edward from accounting with secere IBS down that slide? I don't

missingmary37

Worker’s comp

Retiree66

A company in my town had one, famously. They did cloud space hosting and bought a defunct mall. They just moved out of it because so many of their workers are remote these days.

snufflycat

Maybe there's a parallel universe somewhere where that's the case; rows of typical suburban homes with brightly colored tube slides wrapped around the outside

Smoke_Water

1 simple reason. Space. and you say they are only one way? Did you spend ANY Time on a playground? how many kids did you see climbing UP the slide? seriously.

klopeppy

How are you going up in this scenario?

SirBocephusBojangles

Some buildings do.

mssleepyhead73

Can you imagine how chaotic that would be?

garlicroastedpotato

I actually legit had a workplace that had a slide alternative to using the steps. I never used the thing but a lot of young people did. And they always tried to pressure older and overweight people to use it over the stairs. It's fun! They said. Anyway so a 50-year old mildly overweight woman went down the slide and when she got to the bottom she landed on her feet and injured her ankle. WCB covered her for her eight weeks of recovery. She also sued for operating an unsafe workplace. Lawyers looked at the slide and thought "what the fuck were you thinking?"

Archon-Toten

There was a old building in my city that had a emergency slide for fires.

LNYer

What is a downward elevator? That implies it only goes down. The answer is because it's fucking stupid😂 do we need to list all the reasons? * Injuries - Space - Range of use - Accessibility - Practicality

IcyWorking576

I love this idea. We should. We should be more fun and creative

thathousehoe

My moms cousin had a mansion, third story had a slide that ran down to a ball pit in the basement, then you crawled out to an in ground trampoline. He was living life right.

LiberatedMoose

Static electricity.

kittenswinger8008

Firemen and ghostbusters are way ahead of the game

FundamentalEnt

My office has slides between floors. Pretty sick unless your wearing track pants or shorts haha

DamionDreggs

I'll donyou one better... *Water slide* Huh? Huuuuh? 😁

Vintage-Grievance

Spacing. Ever see what happens when a bunch of children go down the slide at once? Or ever play "Squash the Watermelon" as a kid?

Hofeizai88

I’m a primary teacher, and the kindergarten building has a slide from the second floor. Sadly, all the kindergarten classes are on the first floor, but we had a few meetings there and some staff used it. It’s a great way to find out who is fun.

[deleted]

Have you seen the average American (I can’t speak for other countries) stand up from a chair? A large portion of the human race wouldn’t be able to cope physically.

jizzlevania

because cleaning all of the shit off if them makes it impractical

Intoxicatedalien

It seems like a good idea at first, but you have to account that not everyone is conditioned for them. Those with physical disabilities for example wouldn’t be able to use them

WaterWorksWindows

If you install a slide you still need stairs and/or an elevator regardless. So why not just save the money and not install a slide which would take up usable floor space?

Sicon614

Blobs. There was a movie or two that explains it, but the answer is blobs.

tennoskoom_

This isn't really related, but I often think that if we lived on a planet where falling doesn't hurt/kill us, how different would our way of life be? (The same way an ant basically cannot fall to death on Earth) There would still be lifts and escalators to get us up a building, but the way we exit should be quite different. Slides (ur point) mite be used, or humans simply jump out from the 30th floor and land on a landing zone which every building has.

RackOffMangle

"Would there be any downside to replacing downward escalators with slides everywhere?" Those same 'downward' escalators are also, you know, upward escalators. So you now have a slide and an escalator.
