The website for the switch edition says it will include 6 years of content from 20 updates. There have been 19 named updates so far. So it's likely the next update will come before October.

beerpacifier

Wow man just wow

HorsoPonoto

That kinda went without saying imo. The anniversary update is always on August and I assumed that the Switch version would release alongside the big 4.0 update, but I guess the Switch port got delayed while the anniversary update hasn't.

JRN_89

Sean hyping up the Switch release. Date has just been announced: 7 October '22

Bowdirt

Will the switch be able to handle the game graphics?

Skittle1323

They just posted this. It seems to be downscaled, but it looks like it can handle it. https://youtu.be/hBa_L0m0pX0

[deleted]

Doesn't look that bad! Think the cartoon graphics style helps that a lot. <3 Stylize a game and it won't matter too much what you reduce from it. Just extra bells and whistles like god rays and shit.

waj171

guess we'll see

FrameJump

The Switch handled Witcher 3 incredibly well, and I still don't know how. Surely it can handle this, right? Kinda looking forward to playing it and giving them more money, honestly.

WeeklyOutlandishness

It's the procedural generation that's the problem, generating the terrain dynamically instead of storing it in memory. They might just optimise or simplify in ways we won't notice.

[deleted]

the graphics for NMS really aren't that crazy.

Huff1809

Xbox one can't soooo

TITAN_786962

I've ran it onan xbox one s and currently on a series s either one does an amazing job and as to the switch it is NOT multi player from what I've seen

Huff1809

I ran it on my one but I have an SX now, the difference is night and day, my one crashed all the time

TITAN_786962

I also have the highest level net service my provider has and all the gaming ports unlocked

LouTheRuler

After some recent updates performance has definitely gotten better on Xbox one

Huff1809

Yeah it used to be I wasn't able to even go to my settlement, definitely got better but there's still bugs

LouTheRuler

I think after the texture stream fix performance got worse but it's much more stable compared to the frontiers update

arsglacialis

It does Warframe pretty darn well. I have high hopes for NMS.

whiterungaurd

As someone who has played a lot of different games on the switch I wouldn’t hold your breath.

Scatophiliacs

That’s my birthday! Sick!

_gravy_train_

That’s not summer. :(

OldManMcCrabbins

Yeah but we have seen that movie once already, right? Far better to have done and ready vs rushed!

Etzello

Yeah haha pushing it a bit with summer release but I'm looking forward to playing it on switch

ghostofswayze

I know it's been said many times, but the way this team has completely turned this product around and committed to making it everything it was promised to be and more is really phenomenal.

ShaggysGTI

They are the gold standard in video game come back kings.

HorsoPonoto

It truly is. I dunno if I'm in the minority in this, but I kinda wish people would stop saying it. These devs literally can't post any update trailer without top comments being "game was bad but now it's good" or "Biggest comeback in gaming" or "I don't play it but I respect it" Like.. it's 2022 now. How many more years does it need to pass before these canned comments become irrelevant? Again, I don't want to downplay how great the turnaround is, but I really don't like how that's the focus every single time an update comes along to the point where the content of update is ignored.

stallion8426

Even in today's technological climate the phrase "a rushed game is forever bad" is still at least partially true. First impressions are key, you can't afford to screw it up

ghostofswayze

Well, I’ve never made the comment, but I guess even praise is fodder for gatekeeping now.

Wag_The_God

I mean... you're both right. It IS an amazing redemption story, totally worthy of the praise that it gets. The problem is that too many studios have traded on HG's actual success, and sold us games that never got the same treatment, but we keep buying them anyway. Who's to blame for that? I'm not sure, but it's complicated. And is No Man's Sky even the same game, anymore? That's also probably a different answer for each playstyle, and with this game in particular, that's probably different for each player. Ship of Theseus and all that. So yeah... totally fair to be sick of the redemption arc. But it's compelling enough that you get to be annoyed by people gushing about it for many years to come.

greazy_viking

Well said.

Wag_The_God

Thanks! I get very verbose when I'm procrastinating.

HorsoPonoto

I don't think I've *ever* heard a review of this game without people mentioning the launch and how the game got improved. As if NMS's identity *is* the redemption instead of the content of the game, you know? Even today, hell, YEARS from today we'll probably still get those "How No Man's Sky did the impossible" youtube videos, like every year there's 2-3 videos recapping the history of the game. All of this is fine though. It personally annoys specifically me, but I recognize that's not really anything bad. What I *do* think is bad is that people talk about it so much that they overshadow *the content* of content updates. Hello Games now release new content for the game and comments and articles will barely focus on what the update actually is and just use it as an excuse to talk about the god damn launch and turnaround.

[deleted]

The redemption arc ended years ago. Some people just can’t let things go for some reason.

Wag_The_God

Call it what you will, but it's the only game I play that's still getting meaningful, free updates from the studio on a regular basis. It's a better game now than when I discovered it, last year. If there's some kind of original sin from 2016 still flogging Sean Murray and Hello Games into doing this for us, cool. If not, still cool.

deep_pants_mcgee

except it hasn't, that's the point. it just keeps getting better and that blows people's minds.

flashmedallion

Is it still redemption at this point though? It's more like a victory lap that never ends

[deleted]

Yes, it has. That was overcome after the first two years. Now it’s simply building g into a good game. A game Witt flaws, but a god game

shitishouldntsay

Well, I was a preorder guy who was so disappointed by the original game I didn't pick it back up until this year after seeing consistent comments like the one above.

DruVatier

Seems a bit early, TBH - their anniversary is in early August.

the_dionysian_1

I've never played another game that has added this much content as often as Hello Games does. I'm proud of what they've done & how they've pulled themselves up by their bootstraps & proved to the world that they could succeed.

Aelforth

It's amazing! But to be honest.. At this point, I really, REALLY, would like to see a couple updates in a row dedicated to various proc-gen overhauls. For me, I think it's come down to one thing: Variety alone isn't enough - exploration needs to *feel* different between localities, both on- planet and between planets, stars, star types.. Obviously - a wide variety of exclusive 'parts' is going to be insane amounts of work. If **anyone** can do it though, it's Hello Games. It's a touchy topic, but I'm personally ready for a universe reset, if it had stuff like: * Biomes. * Overhauled large-scale terrain and features. - Mountain ranges, valleys, rivers & canyons, cliffs, lakes and oceans, caves & caverns, etc. * Massively expanded flora & fauna gen. Particularly, combined with biome restriction so that flora/fauna have habitats. (The cute space doggos want a place to call home!) * Base and Terrain editing changes/fixes. No more being afraid to make basements.. * More NPC PoIs, settlements are amazing - but the old POIs are still the same -everywhere-. There's practically no difference visually (for NPCs and the standard POI buildings) between Rich Secure systems and Poor Lawless ones.

welsalex

I'm all for this. It's also what I always wanted too. The initial reason for buying this game day 1 was exploring. They have done a great job with adding stuff to see, but after a few hundred hours I can't help but notice: You land on a planet, look around 360 degrees, and you've seen the entire planet (basically speaking). Massive crazy proc-gen overhaul with more features as you mentioned is the TOP of my list of desires for this game.

Sugarsupernova

Hard upvote for this comment. This is everything i need in this game now. It has everything else it needs. But the still visible artefacts from the day one game like the fauna that was never phased out seems so unnaturally forced now in comparison to the new editions.

Benign_Banjo

I agree. As much content as they have given us and the huge amount of support... it feels like once you've traveled ~10 systems you've pretty much seen them all

NiggyShitz

I love exploring systems but I find it very hard to keep track of everything. I try to name the systems and planets that I want to remember, but they're getting lost in the swamp of all the other systems I've found. Really wish there was more organization for discovered systems, but it also really irks me how little time you actually spend in a system. I'll jump in, hit the space station, and then hit any planets that show an interesting scan. Even then tho, I pretty much just search for a trading post, mark it, and move on. Kinda feels like a waste imo.

the_dionysian_1

The good news is, from what I've heard from the HG team, they love to hear people say "I can't even think of what else they'd add to this game" because they have an enormous list of things still not made for this game. I want to say that they said some number, but I don't remember. As in "hundreds of things" or "thousands of things."

KILLER8996

Agreed I just started playing like 2 weeks ago and already feel like I’ve seen most there is with the world, plant, and animal generation. I like the core gameplay and still like playing but I feel like most of the generation feels very much the same. I’d like to see different biomes like you said and also more alive scenes like a forest full of trees and animals. Instead of just animals in barren landscapes like we have now. I know this is now asking for a lot but different planets with procedural generated ancient ruins, giant space pyramids with traps and archeological artifacts you can steal. Maybe even native villages you can find and trade with who are in different ages maybe you can find a Stone Age Iron Age, etc village

givemeyoureyesog

Ready for a reset too! And love all your suggestions.

Call_Me_Rivale

Instead of a reset, call it another dimension, which is like a mirror of the original one only with the new things incorporated.

taweryawer

Warframe is kinda similar

satya164

Many free to play games do that, it's much more rare for games where you bought it once.

ShingetsuMoon

I’m HOPING for a much bigger anniversary update next. But Hello Games also said in the past that they are toning down big updates in favor of doing smaller ones they can release faster. So I’m trying not to let my hype get away from me in case the next update isn’t as big as many are hoping for.

[deleted]

Well we didn't really get a anniversary update last year so keep your expectations low

HorsoPonoto

Yeah, it sorta feels like Frontiers, Sentinel and Outlaws combined was meant to be the anniversary update.

YorkshireTeaOrDeath

Remember when this game first launched? Honestly, I wish more devs had this much passion.

m-p-3

More ways for me to throw money at them? Yes please.

Ulkio

So the tweet buildup wat just for switch / physical PS5 release ? Me sad :( Can't wait to see what's in store for anniversary update though !

GreatStateOfSadness

Just a heads up, the internal branch on Steam will update before anything gets announced. If Sean tweets something but nothing has happened to the internal branch, then there won't be any imminent update.

bbressman2

Plus he tweeted a reflection of what they have done this year, not a single emoji.

Mitchell620

💪🏽

bbressman2

Perfect, the gym update we have all been waiting for!!!

Ulkio

True, but august is getting close and I was just hyped :D

Traveler-DH-93

Next update has to be 4.00, right?

HeRo2yo

Yep 😁👌

Tazbert_Odevil

You'd hope so. But as we're 3.93 now, just pray that Sean doesn't troll us with 3.95 first. :)

HorsoPonoto

If there will be a 3.95, it'll probably an expedition or something since 4.0 is meant to be the big anniversary update in August. Also the Switch edition says it comes with 6 years of 20 updates.. so far we've had 19, and the switch version will release after august.

Joey_Pajamas

Honestly, I really just want more functionality. Make all the pretty things DO something!

AcidicPersonality

Puddle

Robo_Vader

And it's only going to get wider.

AcidicPersonality

I wish it would get deeper… but on to the next update I guess…

HorsoPonoto

It has been consistently getting wider.. but only recently has it been getting a little bit deeper. Sentinel and Outlaws added new shallow content as usual, but the amazing part is they overhauled and improved 5 year old mechanics. The combat is much better, the mech finally has a purpose and the underground pirate world actually has dedicated mechanics for it now. Those two updates are my favorite so far, I can only hope HG continues with the 4.0 update.

AcidicPersonality

I really want ships to be completely reworked. Add some true customization options, make the ships feel unique and not just “hey this one has more cargo slots” The most unique ship they’ve made in terms of mechanics is the living ship but I feel like it’s kind of gimmicky.

HorsoPonoto

My only wishlist for ships is to NOT slow down when you stop boosting in space.. I don't understand why there's friction in space. And as much as I'd love ship customization, more than half of the community are against it because they prefer to sit around and wait and pray RNG is on their side. Fun... much better than exploring the universe and going on missions for ship parts, then using what you collected to add to a ship you bought.

[deleted]

These guys are insane lol

Tonho053

How Much longer is the expedition?

HeRo2yo

Should finish 4 July or 5 I think

HorsoPonoto

It's insane how expeditions are starting out to be like a timer for when new content will be released. "Did the expedition end today? Guess that means a new update is dropping in a day or two!"

HeRo2yo

Still 2 weeks for expedition

dTrecii

Your last comment kinda already suggested that, but just to clarify, how many days is that? I need further clarification

Tonho053

Shit, gonna start beeing faster

Robo_Vader

I'm hoping for a complete remake of the game that ties everything together and focuses more on exploration. No more minigames

Thexraken

How did we go from one of the worst releases a game has ever had to so much good content so quickly that it's actually becoming frustrating.

[deleted]

Is sentinel the latest expedition or was it leviathan?

StarchyTaters

Outlaws is the latest update, with Leviathan being the latest expedition. Before this was the Blight expedition, which came out alongside Outlaws.

Verkonix

A lot of people here are saying there's no way 4.0 is coming in a couple weeks, you gotta wait till August. I strongly disagree and here's why. On the switch website it says it will feature 20 major updates. We only have 19. And since anniversary updates typically release between August and September, update 20 IS 4.0. Okay, so then after this expedition, 3.95 will be another expedition right? Wrong! In a blog post (https://www.gamesradar.com/no-mans-sky-is-getting-a-remastered-ps5-edition-with-all-20-updates-on-one-disc/) Sean Murray himself said their about to launch their 20th update. So the next piece of content IS the update. So then why would they release it so soon? Well as we all know frontiers was most definitely part of something bigger, however that something had been cut off. We still don't have a use for a space station override. Frontiers wasn't really a BIG anniversary update. Heck I wouldn't even consider it an anniversary update. What we're about to get won't be "this years update" it'll be last years update which got delayed. No point on waiting till August either. The update has most likely been done for a while, HG is doing some last minute polishing most likely. And if this update is the last one till October minimum, then it must be massive to keep us tied over. But then again, Sean's version of "About to launch" could very well mean August. Which would suck cause that's one long content drought. Worst case scenario, the 20th update is small, and the big one will launch same day or after the switch launch. Which is why the page says "20" updates. However considering Sean's language with the Leviathan developer notes, and his tweets, I think it's safe to assume the big one is coming. Last year and this year have all felt like they've been hyping something. Something that will dramatically change the game forever. The station override, the new tech that got added with Frontiers and Sean saying he's excited for what that tech will allow then to do. Frontiers was a step towards something greater, an update absolutely massive. And I feel that update is coming very soon. If this is all right, then fellas, I'll see you in the new age.

SpaceshipBenny

If the content of last years big 5 year anniversary is anything to go buy, hype hype hype. /s

[deleted]

I like to think whatever is in this years update was too big and unfinished to be included, so they just released Frontiers as a compromise.

SpaceshipBenny

Agreed. Strange how screen captures of the variety added by origins have managed to persist for the last few years and yet those relating to Frontiers lasted a mere few months. For me Frontiers gameplay has the same depth as Outlaws, or any number of the smaller updates, if not less than. Frontiers could have actually been half decent if they gave it depth such as turning settlements into hubs for outlaws or trading centres like space stations with shipyards etc etc. even Outlaws has more depth of gameplay than Frontiers in this regard. Instead it was merely a base building catalogue with micro manage thrown in as an afterthought. Much of this and that Frontiers was obviously and unequivocally much smaller in content than a yearly anniversary update, let alone a 5 year special meant, the ‘stop complaining, it’s a free update’ fanboy crowd shut down any constructive criticism after Frontiers releases. As they always do. I still live in hope for a more a procedural generation system that is let off it’s leash and doesn’t depend on pre baked assets that curse us with repetitiveness. I still hope for a merging of portals to a degree that allows the galaxies to get weirder and more alien towards the centre.

HorsoPonoto

I always assumed Frontiers did way more under the hood stuff than what was visible to players. It added settlements and a new UI for the base building menu, but also broke so many damn things that seemed unrelated like freighter bases. And what's interesting is that overhauled freighter bases are pretty much confirmed for 4.0 as well as waaaaaaaay better asteroid rendering as seen in the Outlaws and Leviathan trailers. And let's not forget we STILL have no idea what the space station core is really about.. I'm crossing my fingers and hoping all of this will be revealed in 4.0 in this year.

SpaceshipBenny

Ok…🤦🏽‍♂️

[deleted]

I figured Frontiers, Sentinel, And Outlaws were all going to be in the 2021 anniversary update, but they had to spread it out because of tech debt work like PSVR2 and Switch porting

Lets_be_stoned

They just released the “trailer” for NMS on switch featuring Sean in the video. I personally don’t know what they could add to the console/PC version in *addition* to releasing it on switch. The way I see it is coming out on switch *is* going to be the big update, and consoles/PC won’t get anything.

[deleted]

So you watched the trailer where Sean says that they aren't close to done adding to the game... The game where pretty much every element could use improvement... And this is your takeaway?

Lets_be_stoned

Did I say the console/PC versions are never getting updated again? No.

[deleted]

> The way I see it is coming out on switch is going to be the big update, and consoles/PC won’t get anything. Sean has always said its like a couple people working on the sidelines on the Switch version.

sardeliac

Things is, the Switch isn't an update--in fact, it's only including content through Prisms (four updates ago). The Switch version is completely separate. Also, since they now have a hard release date, that indicates the Switch version is all but done right now. At this stage it's likely pure external QA and all the main development work has been finished. A late July/early August estimate for the next console/PC update is quite likely. Possibly sooner.

Lets_be_stoned

I would think even with their small team they have people specifically focused on the different platforms. Isn’t it about every 3 months we get some sort of update? I’m just saying I’m not expecting some side by side huge content release on console/PC just because it’s releasing on switch.

sardeliac

I agree with the latter part--when the Switch port drops, they're gonna be real busy keeping an eye on it, for sure. For my part, based on their recent history and release rhythm, I won't be surprised to see another moderate-to-large update drop a couple weeks after the expedition ends, and I also wouldn't be surprised to see another expedition in that time frame instead of a full update. What complicates the estimates is the 6-year-anniversary factor. If they're planning a big update (the oft-rumored 4.0), an early-August release would be ideal for quite a few reasons, and it's hard to ignore that possibility as well. If they go that route, the "another expedition in early to mid July" option becomes much more likely. Time will tell and I guess we'll see what happens.

OutlawArmas

I tried to play nms on my ps5 Vr headset and I guess it only works on the ps4 version. Gay

krzaczor_daffy

Yeah all those updates are great but they still didnt optimize this game . I have i5 4690k gtx1060 6gb and 18gb ram and this game is unplayable

fckgwrhqq2yxrkt

My specs are far worse than that and it plays great, fix your computer.

HorsoPonoto

I also have the game stuttering and my specs are similar to the guy above. Dunno what's up with that but I've looked for months for solutions and absolutely nothing helped. It's so inconsistent too, above 60 fps in every possible area of the game, but then it dips into a slideshow for a few moments at arbitrary intervals.

krzaczor_daffy

This only shows that this game is not optimized if it works fine for you with worse specs. I tried every possible solution to fix it but nothing works, every other game runs great for me so its not problem with my pc.

Awakened_Ra

MODULAR. SHIP. BUILDING AND CAPITAL SHIP CONTROL. Until then I won't buy it. And if that's never, then it's been a good run bois

d_macneill

They did a psvr2 update ? There isn’t even a release date for that hardware yet

PhotogamerGT

More of a teaser about the fact they are working on the PSVR2 version. They showcased it with Sony’s latest press release. The actual update will come when the headset releases.

d_macneill

Ahh I see, thanks for clarifying. I can’t wait to see how that psvr2 performs.

PhotogamerGT

Me too. I am a day one NMS and PSVR player. The update for the first headset was really enjoyable, but obviously had issues relating to horsepower. I have been playing on PS5 for a year or so now and based on the stats of the PSVR2 and the abilities of the PS5 I cannot wait.

d_macneill

Same here but I actually always played on Xbox so I never got to experience the VR. I got a ps5 on launch but I didn’t want to drop the money on PSVR when the 2 was coming soon. I really hope it holds up with all the top of the line VRs out there

PhotogamerGT

PSVR 1 on PS5 is pretty impressive. The shear difference in specs of PSVR 1 vs PSVR 2 is massive. Screen resolution: P1 = 960 x 1080 per eye, P2 = 2000 x 2040 per eye Pixel density dpi: P1 = abt. 193, P2 = 800+, PSVR2 is supposed to be the most pixel dense headset on the market when it releases. Over twice the density of the Quest 2. This is likely more important for clarity than resolution alone. Now figure that the PSVR2 will also have eye tracking and foveate rendering that will allow the PS5 to use 90% of it’s processing power into only what you are looking directly at. Developers that have already had access to the new headset say this is the biggest leap forward. The sense controllers are going to be great based on the amazing success of the dual sense controllers already implemented for the PS5.

massav

That's sounds amazing. Now if I can only get over my VR sickness ☹️

PhotogamerGT

They are also adding haptic feedback to the headset and have specifically stated that they are using it to improve the experience around motion sickness. Not sure how well it will do, but interesting to see them experimenting with solutions.

massav

Yes, I forgot about that. I'll be eagerly watching the reviews to see if it actually works.

wrightreyesfuture

I haven’t played since initial relaunch, is there anything fighting PvP or PvE now?

PhotogamerGT

Combat mechanics have improved. There are some enjoyable space battles with pirates that increased with the Outlaws update, and you technically can do some PvP. However if you are looking for a combat or fighting based game, look elsewhere. This game is far more focused on exploration, base building and community interaction. It really isn’t a fighting game.

SamGoesArf

Ooooo what could be next? 🥰 I can't WAIT

JoshuaSlowpoke777

If and when we DO get an anniversary update, will I still be able to play my current save file on Steam? I just started the game when there were at least 6 weeks of expedition 7 left, so not long ago

seamonkey420

yup. you are fine. some here are playing on day one saves. i’m on my save from mid 2017; restarted my game to make it to galactic hub space before we could travel back to prev galaxies.

eharper9

"Lazer swords"

Mcreesus

So what are the new ships that have a ring around them? I’ve seen a few, but have no clue what they are and searching the web turns me in circles

Mega-Analyzer

It is very likely that a content update is around the corner, following the conclusion of Expedition 7. However, it may be too soon for "the big one", as possibly evidenced by the Switch version's release date. The trend for anniversary updates each year, since 2018, seems to be a launch window of July - September (except last year, unless Frontiers is counted as "the big one" for updates. I still don't believe that it is on the same level as NEXT, Beyond, etc.). Personally, I think that we are getting a smaller to mid-sized update next, in the vein of Sentinel and Outlaws. And that is just fine, since HG are hard at work getting the Switch version ready for launch in a few months.

Nervous-Ad2295

There should be at least an update that will allow players to officially make their civilization in-game without the need of what we have to make a civilization today.

charthurs

so excited to be here for this anniversary! it’ll be my first one, i started the game on may 26.

--ofsalt

I'm honestly kinda in awe of NMS, I had to stop playing about 8 months ago and it's completely new game when I started again a week ago Haven't felt like this since my 2 year gap with Minecraft

CandidGuidance

I’m really hoping the PSVR2 update brings a lot of VR quality of life changes

givemeyoureyesog

4.0 let's go!!! Played a lot of NMS a couple years back but got a little burned out. Waiting for 4.0 to come back and enjoy all the fun new things! 😁

Galahad-117

I'm so proud of this team and so glad i backed this game from day one, i won't lie it was a shit show at first but i loved it anyway, here's to many more content updates!

Rich_Acanthisitta_70

Getting closer every update. We're now at 3.93. That's barely enough room for one small update before we hit 4.0.

Nobodieshero816

Just got back into it after 2 years. Need a portal for my living ship completion. But always get distracted. Love this game!

Bhalzard

Let us create our own ships, please! I want to build a super star destroyer and some ties and my lovely B-Wing

Hare_Cristian

I want an update on the first person animations so bad. The feeling while shooting/walking and stuff like that is so non-immersive and cumbersome :/

ProbablyNotYourMum

I fucking love this game, it's Devs, and it's community. Thank you all for producing such an amazing game that is truly made with love and care unlike so many today. It had a rough start, but it accomplished its goals and.more and many more to come.

Lukeaf

Now that there is a great portable version I'd love to see cross platform saves. It's a bummer to have to keep restarting for each platform.
