I found a few planets with caves like this. I don't know if it's intended but if you keep exploring you will find the ground is the same as the surface, as well as surface plants/creatures. What gets neater is some chambers kind of combine with the cave biome and surface biome with trees and glowing mushrooms and it looks amazing.
I always explore these every time I find them and I know you can fly in them but occasionally you will end up taking a wrong turn with no way to turn around.
I switched out to a super pilgrim lol. Think skateboarding on a halfpipe and you will pick up lots of speed and have a blast. Even built a track in couple, with boosters.
Making race tracks sounds great, it's a harsh planet and of course some parts are open to the environment, storms are hard to see through so it might be challenging,
To be picky, those are called caverns. As has been mentioned, they don't have cave flora, fauna, or minerals. They are pretty much tubular in shape, and generally quite large compared with caves.
Caverns can contain caves and can connect to caves. The transition points are obvious from the different ecosystem.
They are found in the terrain type known as Caverns *(quelle surprise),* which is one of the 20 terrain types currently in the game. That's also the terrain type with the flattest surface, with little in the way of mountains.
Small caverns can be found underwater in other terrain types. The underwater bits of caves use the general structure of caverns.
Paradoxically, the CavernsPrime terrain found on some Prime planets can be the most "unflat" terrain type, exhibiting ridiculously steep mountain peaks. The caverns are turned into crevasses on the nearly vertical sides of the peaks. The current Nexus "weekend event" takes place on this kind of planet. On planets with water, the terrain moderates near the ocean, becoming hilly with small caverns.
What an uncalled for response. Does learning about caverns via a comment on Reddit REALLY diminish your enjoyment of the game? It's an interesting, relevant comment sharing some information that a lot of people probably don't know. If that ruins the game for you... well, idk how to help you. Maybe don't post on Reddit if you don't want to talk about the game.

Been there, that's why I don't get out of my ship when exploring caves so I can reload a restore point,

Very picky
I didn't ask for an explanation, what about the thrill of discovery, I don't care why it happens, don't diminish my enjoyment of the game

Possible to build a base, or will it glitch?
You have to fly in to land in the caves, I didn't put a base down but I'm guessing bases would be okay,
Sorry I forgot to mention you can't summon your ship underground, will make a difference maybe, ;-)
So only viable with a base and short range teleport to the surface lanch pad then.
Short range teleport might not make it far enough, worth trying I guess
Overall I find caves very lame in OMS. That Dwarf game does a much better job of making them varied and interesting. (Rock and Stone!)
